I am so happy I found this spot. It was open shortly after the snow and had their driveway completely shoveled so parking was easy. The woman taking my order was friendly and helpful as they have a huge selection. There was tons of seating available. Everyone was getting food to go due to the weather. There is a discount if you use cash with a purchase. I knew I would be in so actually ordered two things. A customer said their chicken was the best so got chicken breasts with fries and fried pickles. Also got chicken and dumplings with cabbage and corn. None of the food was a disappointment. It was all great. I had the friend chicken, fries and pickles first. Eat it like it was going out of style. The chicken and dumplings were really good with the sides. I have found a new local spot to order from. Staff was nice, food great, and overall a nice place to go grab food. The service was very friendly and i engaging, we placed our orders, ( there were three couples including me.) The staff issued us a number and we chose our seat. Though the restaurant inside was not very busy, they were doing a very good takeout service. After 15 minutes, we asked where our order was, and the waitress assured us I It was coming right out. She continued to check about every five minutes. Somehow our order had been , lost/overlooked. She explained the mistake, got it corrected, and informed us that she would gladly give us a few pieces of cake when we left to make up for having to wait. The food is sub part and never seems to be fresh or hot. The fries i received were cold and I got there before the food was even ready. the shrimp was lukewarm. I couldn't even eat but a few bites. the salad had water in the bottom of the container. It was just sloppy and sad. The staff was rude and inconsiderate. thr last couple of times I was there the food was not good and the owner argued with his staff in front of the customers. i would never eat in there because it just looks dirty. I don't know what think about this place. We used to stop by for hot dogs at lunch once in a while, but the last time went, about 6 months ago, it was a wild experience. The service was great as always. The prices had gone up quite a bit. I had a chicken sandwich/fries/drink, my wife had 2pc chicken/fries/drink, and that was close to $30. I guess that's how prices are now. What killed it was that the chicken on my sandwich was so salty I couldn't get through it. It was a pretty large sandwich though - looked great. My wife's chicken was fine, but small pieces for the price. As I was about to talk to someone about the salt problem, an elderly man came in saying he was missing his banana pudding from his carry out order earlier. Discussion ensued in the kitchen, but then the owner (a staff member said it was the owner) came in through the front and just went on a tirade, yelling profanities at the staff about this guy's pudding, insulting them and the guy. The staff member we spoke to was woefully embarrassed, and frankly, if she hadn't identified him as the owner I'd have considered a call to 911. My wife was really upset. We'll eventually try it again, but not yet. We watched this go on for a while and left as soon as the crazy man left the dining room. read more

Came here for lunch today. The vibe you get is a neighborhood dinner. They they had a big specials menu and also a hugh regular menu. I ordered the country steak special with fried okra and fried squash. The food came out and the food was hot. The country style steak was served with yellow rice and lots of gravy. I was running around and before I head home I wanted to stop by somewhere and grab something to eat. As I was searching around I stumble across the Chicken King in Mount Holly. I've always heard of the Chicken King but never ate there and this was my first time going. Once I entered I could tell that this was a popular restaurant because the phone didn't stop ringing the whole time I was there and I consider this a great thing. The menu was expansive but I settled on the catfish and shrimp plate which includes French fries and I ordered an additional side of potatoe salad. I got home and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of small shrimp that I received. The catfish was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was delicious. I loved the amount of potatoe salad that I got and it was good also. I'm glad I stopped by here and I'm going to make this apart of my regular spots to go to. read more

Yay for Chicken King being open during the Great Quarantine! I had to be in Mount Holly for business and decided to grab some takeout for dinner. I got the 2 pc. chicken dinner. It really was some delicious chicken, and very crispy! The two sides I chose were fried squash and macaroni and cheese. Both needed salt, but were pretty good. The corn muffin was pleasantly sweet, but was a little dry. Still giving it 4 stars because everyone gets a pass during this weird time for any inconsistencies. If you are in Mt. My fiancé got the chicken which was fresh (they cooked to order, took 20 mins), juicy and the outside was crispy. He chose potato salad and macaroni and cheese for his sides, both of which were less than average. The macaroni and cheese wasn't cheesy enough and the potato salad had essentially no flavor. Bummer. SERVICE: we ordered our food to go so our interactions were minimal but nothing impressive. SUMMARY: Overall this restaurant is average, the reason for the 3 stars. We had just had a long day of travel and decided to stop in for dinner with the family. Service was great for the worker being there since 9 am and it was 6:45pm in the evening. Food came out and portions were good. We ordered the fish and shrimp platter. Fish was good. We have no complaints in the food department. Where my complaint and the 2 stars derive from is the manager and his repulsive actions. He berated and humiliated his 2 female servers where the entire restaurant could hear him. Using extremely foul language for a family restaurant because the girls had ordered food from elsewhere for their meal and had it delivered. He demanded that he be paid what they paid the delivery guy for their food because they were taking money from his restaurant!! What ??!! When he was called out by another customer for his behavior and language he tried to explain it away that he had a rule no food from other places be delivered to his restaurant and that he took the employees in the back. He did not go back where the patrons couldnt hear him, he was behind the drink machine and the entire restaurant heard every curse word he said to the 2 women. His tone was angry, disrespectful, unprofessional, humiliating, and I'm almost positive it's illegal to demand the girls pay him what they paid the delivery driver for their food they ordered. I know times are hard for everyone right now but no one, and I mean NO ONE deserves what those 2 girls had to endure from their manager. His leadership skills are severely lacking. A leader doesn't treat their team in the manner he treated them. I would've walked out. Traffic jam on the highway led us into Mt. Holly around lunchtime, and we smelled this place before we saw it - mmmmmm... the smell of roasting chicken! So we decided to pop on by. I ordered some grilled chicken with fries, barbecue sauce on the side, and it was TASTY. The chicken was hot and juicy and tender - cooked perfectly. The dish came with a bed of fries and cole slaw, which they let me substitute for mac&cheese for free! The mac&cheese was just OK but again, served at a good temperature, and the crinkly fries also hit the spot. It was just a perfect, filling lunch for a good price. You order at the front counter and then they bring the food to your table. Service is very fast. I found the booths to be quite comfortable and the bathrooms clean. This was a solid, delicious meal for a roadtrip and I am almost glad about the traffic jam because otherwise we would have missed this place! read more
