Incredible dinner here after an afternoon of ice skating at the white water center. The sign said closed but the owner welcomes us in and made us an incredible dinner. I've written about their pad Thai and pho in the past. It's the best ever. Yelp was looking for our favorite hot dog places, and once again, Samvey is at the top of my list. Don't be put off by the fact that they share space with a convenience store. It's all run by the same family. Ok yes Samvay's Wing and Subs is connected to a small convenience store in Mt. Holly but if they make the Yelp top 100 it's definitely worth me giving them a try. Where else can you find classic American food like Cheeseburgers, Hot Dog and Chicken Wings along with Pad Thai, Thai/Lao Larb and Pho? When you pull up many questions may race through your mind but let me ease your fears the food is delicious so take a leap of faith. The restaurant portion of the building may seem closed but you just need to walk through the convenience store part. I placed a huge order so I could try a lot of items. I ordered the Cheeseburger special, the Chicken Pad Thai, the Thai/Lao Larb Chicken, 20 piece Chicken Wings (Lemon Pepper, Teriyaki, Honey BBQ, and Mild) and 4 Eggrolls. Everything was amazing. The Wings were crispy and had great flavor. I would say that the ranch was subpar but the wing flavor made up for it. The cheeseburger special had fries and 3 wings to go along with it. It's a great value. All the Asian dishes were well prepared and were huge portions. I'm definitely glad we made the trip to try Samvay's. If I'm ever back in the area they will be my first choice. JACKPOT -- hidden gem alert! I had to run an errand around this area and decided to grab lunch. I came across this restaurant on accident and wanted to take my chances. WOW! High give to myself! Samvay's is part restaurant and part gas station. Don't let the outside fool you! Go in if you want to enjoy legit Southeast Asian - Laos/Thai food. The food was made to order. How did I know? Because the sound of the wok came on when my order was read out loud. I was the only one ordering food and right when I sat down, the phone started ringing off the hook and people started to show up to order. It seems like a local favorite around here. While everyone was going for the chicken wings...I went for: Pad Thai: The sauce is boss when it comes to Pad Thai and they definitely got it right. A rich sweet and tangy sauce to compliment the pho rice noodles. The chicken and tofu was cooked to perfection. The squeeze of the fresh lime brought the whole dish together. It was plenty of food and could easily be split between 2 people. Everything was right about it. Egg rolls: Some of the better Asian egg rolls I've had all around. I ordered two and they were delicious as well! It came with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. Overall, fantastic customer service! I had a chance to speak to the owner. He was very kind and welcoming and even invited me back to dine again. Please support this hidden gem! Special note: Laos/Thai food seems new to this part of town. Not bad for the location. They said no more beef larb bc of beef prices but I was able to order beef fried rice... ‍ pretty disappointed to not get to order the larb. Pad Thai was good -9/10. Beef fried rice was average and good when fresh -7/10 In a odd spot. Spot is rough looking and had guys just hanging out outside in front of the building by the front doors. Just as the other reviews have stated. Who would have expected a little hole in the wall joint like this in a convenience store! Paula was so nice and helpful. She helped us navigate the menu and spiciness levels. It's so nice having an upbeat and friendly person to take orders. We tried the shrimp and chicken combo pad Thai and the beef larb as well as all three egg rolls. Everything was delicious! The pad Thai had great flavor. The sauce was nice and tangy and not too sweet. There was a lot of chicken and shrimp in it. Paula recommended going easy on the spice, and we did. We enjoy spicy foods, so it was not spicy at all at that level. I might have been able to handle the regular spice level. The same could be said for the beef larb, except that whatever lesser spice level they were able to do with the larb was plenty spicy enough for us! The flavor was great, and the rice helped soak up some of the spice. Of the three rolls, I think I liked the pork egg roll the best. Of course, the house made spring roll with noodles was also top notch! The Korean spring roll was good as well, but I have to say that the other two really caught my attention. The 5 star to 2 star is mainly for the price increase. There is NOOOOOOO reason for this extreme price increase. Same good same quality nothing special but the price is ridiculous. Not only did they adjust the spice level for us but they offer spices in separate containers. They also refunded our order. They trusted us and we are now loyal lifelong customers. I learned about this hidden gem from a Facebook group I belong to: Gaston Eats. Look it up if you are a foodie! We visited tonight and it was a great experience, mostly. I've waited a couple of hours before writing and assigning stars. The reason? My food was horrible, but everyone else enjoyed theirs so much I feel like I have to bump up my stars. This place is a gas station with a restaurant area. It's not much to look at from the road or inside, but it is clean. Surprisingly clean, though I did not visit the bathroom. The cashiers who took our orders were so kind, patient and helpful. They even googled a picture of larb for me so I knew what I was getting. You order and pay before hand, and I kind of dig it. Casual, when I'm done I get to leave. And really, it is cheap! $35 for 3 folks for dinner. That never happens. So, the larb. Let's get this out of the way. I found it inedible. No, I didn't tell the staff. My daughter shared her pad thai with me, and honestly, even with both of us eating it, we couldn't finish it all. So no one left hungry. For me, it did not LOOK burned, but it had a very acrid taste that I could not get around. My daughter thought it tasted like nuts. I think it might have been a little of both. Now the good news: the pad thai! My kids both agreed that this was one of the best pad thais they have eaten and would go back in a heartbeat. It really was good! I don't normally care for sweet food that isn't dessert, but this was just fine. They give you a lime wedge and peanuts to balance that sweetness as well. For me, the very best thing was the egg roll. Handmade by the owner's wife, they were so tasty. I have driven pass by this place at least 100 times and never noticed that they also served food here. They are located on my holly rd. Pass the caromount hospital. Make the first right at the lights, than make left at first light. It will be on the left side. It looks like a gas station. When your drive by this place you would think it's just a little convenient store. You wouldn't know that they served food unless it's by word of mouth. And that's how my family ended up there. My nephew was the one who told us about the restaurant part of it. He would go there and order wings. But they had other food items too. So we stop by and gave them a try. When you come in you order at the counter and pay first. You can dine in or do take out. If you dine in they do have a small area where you can sit. We decided to dine in and we order their wings (HOT for the flavors) and order 2 bowls of pho. Since everything is cooked to order it does that awhile for the food. Plus they already had call in orders. When our food did come about 10 to 20 minutes later it was steaming hot and the wings were still crispy. Their sauce for the wings was really good. It was spicy but it had a hint of tanginess. The wings were a good size, not to big wear they look like it was shot up with steroid. The pho was also pretty good, the only thing about the pho was it was a little to sweet for me. Other than that my kids look the food and now ever time we want wings I order from them. They do have other items on the menu and they do get a lot of food orders so I would call ahead. They don't do delivers or have a online ordering system. But you can Google them see the menu. Ok, they say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover so I didn't. Based on the positive reviews I took a drive to this place to see what the hype was about. For starters it appears that it's not in the best of neighborhoods and it is attached to a convenience store where people are in and out buying everything from alcohol to lotto tickets. I would absolutely give them 5 stars based on their friendliness and customer service but that's where it ends. I've had some authentic Thai food and this ain't it! The Pad Thai was extremely lumpy and had a strong undesirable aroma to it, almost like hot sauce. The fried rice was ok, but nothing to write home about.
