We had a plumbing emergency in winter 2023. What was assumed to be a simple clog was discovered to be three breaks in our pipes. They got to work, dug up the driveway, installed new pipes and assured us we'd see them in the spring when they'd be able to pour the concrete in appropriate weather conditions. We ended up being without a proper driveway for several months, I believe it was roughly 9 months for anyone interested. They left behind a huge dirt pile, which made it hard to pull into the driveway. We had to repeatedly call them to get someone out, they finally returned, and when they poured the concrete they boxed in our basement windows, one of which is also attached to our dryer vent. There wasn't enough space to safely ventilate while I was drying my clothes (they also left a large plywood board blocking the vent as we waited for them to come back, we had to pry it away ourselves to allow for proper ventilation from our outer wall). So I called them, and they said they'd send them back out to fix it. They sent one guy and apparently no concrete saw, so now we're probably looking to have a friend come free it up a bit more and my husband may end up rerouting the vent so that its safer to use because they barely chiseled it out. When I spoke to someone higher up, it sounded like the guy who came by misled me and absolutely could have freed up our dryer vent properly using the equipment he had with him, I guess he just didn't want to do that. So either dishonest or incompetent, take your pick, but we ended up rerouting the vent to be safe. By the way, the vent is very obviously there. I don't know how they didn't see it and screwed that up. For what we spent, I expected much better. This was a several thousand dollar situation. For that price tag, I expected prompt service and professional results. The first round of work, one of the crew members took one of my coffee mugs into their truck, I never got it back. When they finally returned to pour the concrete, one of them glared at me the whole time. My friend stopped by at one point and she noticed him giving me the stink eye too. They also left behind several bottles of what I'm sure was urine in my yard. Gross. Also, they didn't remove all the dirt from our yard/driveway when they finished. So we've been hauling that away ourselves too. They left a portion of our driveway buried under roughly 6 inches of dirt and our yard is no longer level. We will also have to rebuild a small garden wall as it collapsed when they dug things up. Initially, they told me they would repair this too, but they later said they couldn't do so. But, we can't do that until we finish leveling the yard out. We had multiple other plumbing projects we would have hired them for had this process gone more smoothly. We've absolutely decided to go in a different direction with all of that and I've rescinded any recommendations I gave to friends, family and neighbors. ZERO STARS! TLDR: Was without hot water for an entire week! CSE took 7 days to install a tankless heater, because they didn't have any experience with tankless heaters. Then, CSE finally dispatched someone else with actual experience. Complete waste of time and mental and emotional energy! Never hiring again! (I'm not saying their real names, because my problem wasn't with the plumbers dispatched to us. My problem is with the company as a whole.) Last year, CSE fixed a leaking sink for $500. When my water heater died, I called them again. This time, however, was a disaster. Day 1 (Wednesday): Plumbers Alex and Ben said my tank heater needed replacing. My partner and I opted for a tankless unit for the Energy Star tax credit. We paid the $1,400 deposit. Day 2 (Thursday): Alex and Ben delivered the unit but did no work, claiming they needed more parts. They should have called instead of making us wait at home for nothing. My partner had to wake early and secure our pets for the second day straight, only for them to waste our time. Day 3 (Friday): After confirming they'd finish, they finally started the installation. They removed the old heater and mounted the new unit, but hit another snag with the exhaust vent needing cement to reattach properly. While understandable that it needed to dry and no extra cost was charged, they forgot to turn our gas back on, forcing us to do it ourselves to cook dinner. Day 4 (Saturday): They finally finished, but the tankless heater displayed "ERROR CODE 12," indicating a gas pressure problem. Luckily, I took a picture of the unit's box before they tossed it. I was able to find the manual on the manufacturer's site. Alex blamed Nicor Gas, which was closed for non-emergencies. My plumber friend suggested the pipes were too small, a detail I relayed to Alex. During this whole nightmare, let me remind you, we had NO HOT WATER since Tuesday. We couldn't shower, wash our hair, do laundry, wash dishes, or bathe our pets. We had to take sponge baths over the sink with hot water from our kettle. A couple times, we wanted to check into a cheap hotel. JUST so that we could shower. We made it clear to CSE that it was absolutely humiliating that we weren't able to bathe. Along with the sleep deprivation from needing to wake up early to answer the door, needing someone to be home, and locking up our pets for hours. Day 5 (Sunday): Alex finally admitted I was right about the pipes and promised to fix it Monday. Day 6 (Monday): Alex and Ben were no-shows. We called Nicor, whose tech confirmed our gas pressure was fine--the heater was the problem. Alex called in sick, which we only learned late in the day. The office refused to send another plumber, insisting Alex would finish the next day, despite our week-long lack of hot water. It was clear Alex and Ben lacked tankless heater experience. Day 7 (Tuesday): Alex and Ben finally returned, replacing the incorrect flexible gas hose they'd used with a proper metal pipe, as per their supervisor's instruction. Still, "ERROR CODE 12" persisted. Alex finally called "Patrick," another plumber who supposedly specialized in Rheem heaters. Patrick was supposed to come the same day but was a no-show. Day 8 (Next Wednesday): Alex apologized for Patrick's absence, blaming miscommunication. Thirty minutes later, "Patrick" and "Mark" arrived. They were fantastic! They quickly diagnosed and fixed the issue: poor ventilation, not gas pressure. They installed a dedicated exhaust vent, and our new water heater finally worked! We immediately took hot showers and caught up on our chores. The heater has worked perfectly since. However, the final insult: the unit CSE installed doesn't even qualify for the Energy Star tax credit, the sole reason I chose a tankless heater. It's a "mid-efficient" model, not "high-efficient." CSE failed us on every level: dispatching inexperienced plumbers, poor communication, a week without hot water, lost sleep and energy, and a unit that doesn't meet our tax credit requirement. 2 days ago I requested a free estimate to clean my sewer basin via telephone with Caitlyn. She stated a tech should be at home between 10a-12p yesterday though tech, Johnny, didn't show up until a few minutes after. I was ok with that since Caitlyn called beforehand and informed me of tardiness. Johnny was nice, friendly, professional. He stated it would be $650 to clean it and that it wasn't as bad as some of the others he has seen. The quote is in the same range the prior 2 estimates were. I liked Johnny's vibe better. He left and I called the office and was told they could do it in an hour. Of course I agreed. 1 hour and 12 minutes later Johnny came with the crew that cleans the basin. They were nice too. An awful company run by apathetic cowards whose contempt for their own customers is outmatched only by the incompetence of its employees. The employee who answered my call told me it would be $85 for an after-hours visit for which I was ultimately charged $185 (more than 2x the price originally told). On that same call I asked the employee to confirm whether, if my leak was indeed caused by my dishwasher, whether the plumber they were sending possessed the tools and ability to fix the issue, to which the dispatcher responded in the affirmative. The plumber came and couldn't fix anything at all. What was the point of even sending him?! I never would've had this company send a plumber over after hours if I knew the real cost was $185 OR if I had known the plumber couldn't fix the leak. I called back the next day, a Saturday, and described my extremely disappointing experience to the weekend dispatcher, and was told by THAT employee that the company would get back to me on Monday. It has now been six days since the company was supposed to contact me regarding my awful experience, so here I am, sharing my experience with you, dear reader. Honestly, I have no idea how this company has over a one-star rating. Based on my experience, the company employs incompetents who don't even know the most basic aspects of the services they supposedly provide, and the company's management doesn't respect its customers, assuming the weekend dispatcher even conveyed my issues to them. The plumber was a nice enough guy, and I don't think it was his fault that his dispatcher put him in an impossible situation and is generally atrocious at her job. I've been meaning to post this review for quite some time. We had a break in our sewer line and I authorized Chicago sewer experts to dig up the pipe and repair it. During the digging, they discovered a flood control system that was never disclosed to us when we bought the house as it was buried under the front porch out of sight. We actually didn't have a break in our line, but rather the flood control back flow valve had rusted in a semi-open position due to lack of maintenance over the years. With our yard half dug up and our sewer system being off-line there's a lot of pressure to make a decision to get the work done. The price that was quoted seemed extremely high, but I didn't feel I had time to do any shopping for alternative quotes and they knew it. What really irritated me was the fact that after installation of the flood control system we had to wait for things to settle before the piles of dirt could be put back in our front yard put back in some sort of ordinary appearance. We had paid half upfront for the repair and installation with the balance due just before completion of the work. I was promised multiple times by Brandon and Joe Kovalsky that they would be back to complete the job and I needed to pay the balance on the uncompleted work because they promised they would complete it. I lobbied to pay a half of the remaining balance, and the final amount upon full completion of the job. Joe insisted and promised they would be back to complete it. At the time I was undergoing cancer treatments & was a no position to move all this heavy dirt in March underneath the porch and back into our yard. The bottom line is, they never returned and never put our porch back together or filled in the dirt as they had promised. My wife had to do the work the repeated calls to them went unanswered. I know they feel like they cheated me as they did on doing this work professionally and they lied and did not do what they said they were going to do as they have never re-contacted me and never offered to do annual maintenance on the system. I requested non-emergency service through a different company on yelp, I'm not sure why my request was forwarded to other companies but I got a call to schedule the repair from Chicago Sewer Experts. At the time I scheduled it because I thought the company I put the request through maybe just changed names. I'll be a lot more aware of yelp forwarding these requests now. I requested service for my shower faucet diverter that went from no water trickling through when in "shower mode", to a small amount of water coming out of the faucet, to more water and then eventually the "shower mode" didn't work. The guy came in with someone he was training and insisted I was wrong, he said I was wrong about it being the diverter and immediately blamed the issue on a broken shower head (partly true) and tested it out by taking the shower head off and testing if water would come out the shower hose. Even doing that, more than half the water was still coming out of the faucet while he still claimed the shower hose had "full water pressure". Even when I pointed out that still a lot of water was passing through it the faucet and there's no way it would be near full water pressure he insisted that getting a new shower head would fix the issue. Granted, he offered to fix the issue if I got a new shower head and it still didn't work, but why would I want someone who won't listen and doesn't seem to know how to diagnose the problem in the first place, even when I point it out, come back? In the 5 minutes he spent talking over me and doing everything he can to rush through, he charged the full $185 fee not even the quoted 150 flat rate I got via yelp messages. read more

After a minor overflow caused by torrential rains we had some water seep in through our drains leaving minimal, but standing water. I was away on business and found this team through YELP. They responded instantly, despite the majority of the city having flooded. Robert arrived, explained honestly that outside of a flood prevention system, this was likely to be an issue. But in his inspection noticed that our pumps were clogged as well as our catch basin, which was severely backed up. We were informed that, clearing these may have helped prevent the water seepage but wouldn't guarantee it. However I knew these systems needed to be cleaned and maintained and he offered to help us on the spot. I appreciate honestly. So I called the phone number on Wednesday. The lady on the phone seemed like I was bothering her, but she said somebody would come out between 8-9 am on Friday. It's 9:30 am and nothing. I called back and same lady said she would find out where the technician was and call me right back. Nothing. I called back at 10:15 and was told that somebody would be here within the hour. Chicago Sewer Experts came out to fix an issue we were having with our washer/sink draining. Not only were they late (arrived past the time window we were given and no call to let us know they were running late), but the worker then locked his keys in the car which took half an hour to resolve. He used OUR tools to get himself back into his car. Once he was finally able to get in the car and get his tools, he did NOT tell us that "blowing out" the hose of the dryer would cause our kitchen sink to be "blown out" too. This caused mud and debris from the pipes to be blown all over our kitchen and our ceiling, which led to a lengthy cleaning process on our end and trying to figure out how to scrub the ceiling. Hi, my name is Ericka Matthews. Chicago Experts Sewer did dothe work. However, I still have the sewer smell in my house. The area 3 employees dug the hole in September 2022. The dirt ​is still on top of the other dirt which mean, it's still a huge whole in my yard that need to be filled with the dirt the 3 dug up. The 3 also cut some of the concrete to dig a whole. The manager came out and told me it's not their responsibility to put the dirt back down in the whole or lay the concrete down that they cut. So, I'm highly upset with this company. I wanted a gas shut-off valve installed on my dryer and they came out and quoted $225 + parts. They came out a few days later once I knew I had enough for the job, they did the work quick enough, but looking at the invoice I was charged $285 + parts. A $60 increase (over 25%) for quoted, scheduled, non-emergency work is surprising and disappointing but the work they did was good and they got the job done quick. If you move forward with these guys I definitely recommend getting the quote in writing, but the work itself is good enough. read more

I called them out because of water backing up and needed it to be hydro jetted. Ok hydro jetting is $650 an hr minimum of two hours ok so he said that my pipes was busted and no point of jetting and yet I was charged $450 (because I used a coupon) and didn't receive an hour. Then I was quoted $5,800 for them to put new pipes and other things in. Well now all of a sudden after they dug half of my yard up they need to dig further and now it's way more expensive. With our yard half dug up,some of our fence removed and our sewer system not working there's a lot of pressure to make a decision to get the work done. The price that was quoted was extremely high, but I didn't feel I had time to do any shopping for alternative quotes and they knew it. When selling my Chicago home, the buyer requested a main sewer line scope inspection due to the number of trees surrounding the home. They contacted Chicago Sewer Experts. Instead of sending the camera through the main sewer line located in the garage, the CSE plumber went through the first floor toilet. The so-called "expert" had no idea that the main sewer line cleanout existed only a few feet away in the garage. He didn't even look. Instead, he removed the toilet and didn't bolt it back on properly. This caused water to leak down to the basement floor from the ceiling above. He falsely claimed that this resulted from a crack he allegedly found in the main sewer line and flushing the toilet. He quoted $4,200 to repair the crack and stated it would entail breaking up our concrete basement floor and cutting into the cast iron sewer line found in the basement. We have never had any issues consistent with there being a crack in the main sewer line. No slow drains, clogged toilets, sewage coming through the floors...NOTHING. The CSE plumber even asked if we were having any issues, yet. NO! We knew this guy was lying and called our personal plumber out to address the now leaking toilet and refute CSE's inspection. Our plumber easily cleaned out our main sewer line, bolted the toilet back on (one bolt was conveniently missing after "Chicago Sewer Expert's" inspection) and confirmed that there were no other problems with our plumbing. Additionally, he confirmed that no water is coming up through our basement floor from flushing the toilet as the CSE plumber stated. The water came from the loose toilet. The charge was about $400, not the $4200 that Chicago Sewer Experts were claiming. As a result of their scam inspection, the deal will most likely be killed. THIS IS A TERRIBLE Company that lacks integrity and plumbing knowledge. Providing sewer line scope inspections for people buying and selling homes allows them to exploit our fears and vulnerabilities while pitching costly and unneeded main sewer line repairs. Their negative Yelp reviews combined with their D and F Better Business Bureau ratings should be enough to convince you to Avoid Chicago Sewer Experts at all costs. They took a look at the leak in the value that fed my gas fireplace and determined how best to fix it. They came in the next day - first thing - and started working on it. It was fixed by noon. They also pressure tested the whole system to confirm that there were no additional leaks. I was able to get People's Gas to come back in and turn my gas on that same day. I submitted a request for quote through the Yelp "Free price estimates from local Plumbers" process. Immediately got responses within 15 minutes from different companies This company, Chicago Sewer Experts, responded except that unbeknownst to me, it was an automated email response: "Thank you so much for reaching out. We would like to discuss the issue you are having a little bit more in detail. Can you please give us a call at (click to see phone number), and we will be happy to assist you any way we can. Thanks again. Have a great day!" I mistakenly thought this was a person writing back immediately and authentically (like the other companies) so I called. I got an extremely rude person who then proceeded to take all of the necessary info only to find out later that she needs to send this to someone who will call me back. I asked when, she said she didn't know. (They never did call back.) Bad process! People with emergencies are already stressed out. She was not empathetic and not helpful. In the meantime, the other companies were immediate in their response and I lined up an amazing plumber from another company who came out the next morning. After waiting on Chicago Sewer Experts, I finally gave up but sent a message through Yelp and got the same automated email back! Argh! "Thank you so much for reaching out. We would like to discuss the issue you are having a little bit more in detail. Can you please give us a call at (click to see phone number), and we will be happy to assist you any way we can. Thanks again. Have a great day!" I wrote one more email and someone responded and apologized blaming it in the answering service. Very disappointing and my guess from reading reviews is that others may have the same issue. My sincere feedback to the owner: 1) Please do not use an automated response email when people use the Yelp Quote process. Tricking customers into calling in only to have to then leave a message defeats the purpose of the Yelp shortcut. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY If I could give this business A negative rating I would. They installed a new kitchen sink and a faucet at our residence. The installer forgot to put a small piece that would have kept the water from overflowing. Needless to say the the flooding that happened damaged our wood flooring. We have attempted to speak to a manager several times. They keep telling us that he is out of town or had an emergency. In fact they have now hung up on us several times. It's shameful. They guarantee their work yet do nothing to respond to damage that their work created. We have a whole report about the damages. Now we are hiring a lawyer. This a terrible company. I don't why they have been so well reviewed. read more

We had Pat come out to do some work on our new house. He was very professional and easy to work with during the estimate phase. When it came time to schedule the work Pat and Chicago Sewer Experts were very quick to come out and spent two full days at our house. As is always the case, problems arose during the work (NO fault of Pat's). Pat was very clear with us about what was going on and what needed to be done. We were comfortable with the everything along the way. Chicago Sewer Experts came in at a MUCH better price than the other company we brought in for an estimate.
