The produce section is beautiful offering many staple items and cauliflower as big as my head! The desserts are mind blowing, chocolate, fruit, cake, rolls, tarts, gluten free...all bases are covered here! There is even a soup stand with at least 6-8 selections, to-go foods both cold and warm. Lunch options, dinner options, snacks...it's all available there! Lastly the dog treats, they are homemade and brought in by the baker/owner of the small local business on a regular basis. Several items in the store are sourced locally and the prices are comparable to other stores, maybe a little more for specialty items. All team members encountered are willing to help and answer questions and everyone was smiling and in a genuine good mood. Rare! There is legit something for everyone and they are now on my weekly list of stops to make!

They have an unbelievable selection of high quality meats, cheeses, soups, fresh foods, deli, condiments, breads, fresh produce, and beer and wine. The highlight for me is the meat counter specifically. There are always multiple employees asking if you need help with anything and making suggestions if you're unsure (especially when it comes to the snack sticks, jerky, etc). The hot soup bar is amazing as well. Hands down best soup(s) i have ever purchased at a market. There are too many other great things to mention. Monticellos will continue to be my Go-To for all of the above. Keep up the good work!

Some of my earliest memories are of a slice of pie, sprinkled with extra parmesan and taking in a real ball game (full transparency, I'm a Yankees fan. Sorry, Tigers peeps). Of course, NYC is famous for many other delicacies, but chief among them are their bagels. New Yorkers take their bagels seriously- whether from a brick & mortar storefront or a tiny cart on the street, they better be fresh, doughy on the inside, and slightly crips on the outside. Often served with a cup of joe in the famous Greek themed "We are happy to serve you" cup, bagels can be eaten plain, buttered, schmeared with cream cheese, stuffed with egg, sausage, or bacon, or topped with lox, red onion, and capers. But where does one go in the greater Lansing area for authentic bagels? And can I even get a cup of coffee downtown anymore? These are real life questions I faced recently as I 1) had to do this month's review and 2) had to serve jury duty. The latter query came about last Monday as my jury pool was finally given reprieve for lunch and set loose on downtown Lansing. I never though the day would come when downtown Mason's courthouse would have more walkable coffee options than Ingham County Court on Kalamazoo St. Enter the lifesaver that is New Daily Bagel and their assortments of bagels, customized cream cheeses, sandwiches- hot & cold, and yes, coffee. After walking several blocks trying to cure my caffeine headache, I stumbled upon this shop and was greeted ever so graciously by Basil and assured that they had coffee. His soccer jersey let me know he was a fan of the beautiful game, but I enlightened him that he should root for Chelsea FC (Club World Cup Champs 2025). On my return visits, I was helped by Joseph, who was knowledgeable about the menu and kind. Michael Mahdi, who has run the business since 1987 has clearly created a family atmosphere with his staff and even still makes sandwiches himself today. What Was Necessary I'm a two cups a day kind of coffee drinker. So, when the judge finally let our jury pool out for lunch well after noon, I went full-on Indiana Jones searching for an antidote to my hankering. The iced latte with oat milk and caramel was perfectly timed for a summer afternoon and several blocks back to my return destination. At first, I was let down with only a small 12-ounce cup as the only option, but the coffee was deep and punchy. The caramel was sweet enough to not require additional sweeteners, and the oat milk proved just creamy enough to make for a lush treat. What's Really Good The bagels... honestly. I ordered several variations to get a wider perspective on what the New Daily has to offer. First, the Cinnamon Crunch Bagel ($1.89 plain) with apple cinnamon cream cheese ($4.29 including bagel) was very enjoyable. Sweet, but not overpowering with the added bliss of the crunchy topping, this bagel is pleasing. The same can be said for the Nova Lox on Garlic Bagel ($11.99). Creamy cheese combined with scallions join slices of cold-smoked salmon, red onion, and capers. The New Daily Bagel also serves it with the devil's fruit (raw tomatoes), but I politely set that aside. The garlic bagel offered a nuanced flavor profile, and the lox were slightly sweet, which was perfect with the crunch from the onion and capers. I'm a big fan of breakfast sandwiches. On most weekends, I can be found constructing them in my own kitchen. The Daily Bagel offers choice of meat on their breakfast sammies. I opted for the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Cheddar Bagel ($4.19). This handheld was stuffed with fried eggs, bacon, and cheddar cheese. The bagel's own cheddar had a nice pungency to it that elevated the sandwich overall. It was nearly, better than my own because I opted for the veggie light cream cheese that brought fresh, earthy flavors to the mix. Best Bite The onion roll that accompanies The Journal ($9.35) specialty sandwich is incredible. The Journal is packed with seasoned corned beef and mustard, but the combo of mozzarella and cheddar cheese are the star. The melty mix pulls apart like pizza in a tv commercial and the yum that follows is superb.

For me, it's far and away a bite of an olive burger. That combination of charbroiled burger and olive sauce does it for me every time. This month I was elated we got to review one of the originators. Weston's Kewpee Burger is a Lansing institution. There's little disputing that. Situated downtown on Washington Square and using a recipe for olive sauce that is older than 95 years, the restaurant is nostalgic in all the right ways. The décor is unapologetic in referencing their history and with good reason. Serving comfort food with quality service to downtown's current movers and shakers and former residents who have returned and want an instant reminder of home is something they should be proud of. In pre-pandemic times, it wasn't unusual for a line out the door during the lunch time rush. During the pandemic, Weston's ownership was among the most compassionate with their staff and worked hard to keep the business open even as much of their traditional foot traffic has yet to return. However, you can tell the folks that work here enjoy not just one another but making great food for their customers. Essential During my visits to Weston's this month, I cheerfully tried the Kolossal Olive Burger. Appropriately named as this sandwich is massive, the burger perfectly cooked, and topped with a heaping serving of olive sauce (Chopped, not minced) just the way I like it. There are several local establishments that offer an olive burger and even a few national chains that attempt to offer local flavor. Few of them compared to this tried-and-true version. As I stood in line, there were two gentlemen from south of Jackson who were in town exploring the Capital City. They both ordered olive burgers and as I walked out, I asked them how it was. "It doesn't matter much what else we find today; this burger was worth the drive." Indeed. Comfort Classics My culinary comrades and I sampled several other items off the menu. The Turkey Burger was juicy, surprisingly flavorful, and delightfully crispy- which is atypical of most turkey burgers. The onion rings were solid, but not as good as the sweet potato fries or the regular French fries. Both are seasoned brilliantly- brown sugar on the sweet potato and a light dusting of Greek seasoning on the regular. The chili was hearty and balanced- not too many beans or tomatoes or not enough meat and welcomed on a chilly January afternoon. The restaurant also offers several traditional daily specials- meatloaf and mashed potatoes, bean and ham soup, pot roast, tuna pasta salad, or mac & cheese, all depending on the day. I was fortunate to be in on a day that the goulash was available. Packed with herbs, tomatoes, and ground beef, huddled up with macaroni spirals and served with garlic Texas toast, it was an absolute hit and I had to arm wrestle others in my house for the leftovers. Award Winning The Weston Kewpee Burger team were recently awarded the judges award for their olive burger at a competition on South Beach, Miami. In honor of that recognition, the restaurant now offers a Miami burger- a crumbled burger with a cheesy olive sauce. This olive burger 2.0 is my new favorite in town. It differs from the traditional olive burger in yummy, savory ways. The brininess of the olive sauce somehow works even better in this iteration and the crunchy, flavorful crumbles are a wonderful twist. The best innovations are rooted in tradition.
