The restaurant is directly opposite a glacier (ice cream shop) also known as La Boule au Miel (The Scoop of Honey, more or less). You can sit at one of the outdoor tables at the restaurant and order and be served ice cream from just across the street. If you do, be prepared for deliciousness -- especially if you order a "maboule," a scoop of ice cream in pate a choux pastry. I ordered one with the establishment's "chocolat & orange" ice cream. It came embellished with some chocolate sauce, a bit of whipped cream hidden inside, and chopped nuts on top. It was my first time eating an ice cream dessert with a knife and fork, and it was more than worth the effort. You can also have your ice cream in a more traditional sugar cone, cup, or bowl, as my wife, who tried and loved the sesame-halvah ice cream, did -- but you can do that at home. Service was friendly enough, but our young server had to be reminded to bring the coffee and water we also ordered. He also brought my wife chocolate ice cream instead of the chocolate-orange she also requested, and disappeared before he brought our check, which was delivered by one of his colleagues. But we really didn't mind watching people go by while we waited. After all, next to eating great food, that's one of the most enjoyable activities to pursue in Paris. read more

I used to live this place. Unfortunately the old owner sold the business, and it's just not what it once was. Add to that the fact that the prices have increased dramatically. 15 euro for a plate of 3 falafels, a small cucumber salad, hummus and aubergine caviar. When the bill arrived, I noticed they now charge an extra 2 euro for a piece of pita bread! Absurd. Falafel was cold, and left me queasy - my guess is they need to change the oil they fry in more often. Hummus was bland, other sides were average at best. Super unique concept. They have regular plates but you can also order a tasting platter to be shared amongst just yourself, two people, or (I think) up to 4. You choose a certain amount of dishes, depending on the size of your platter, from a list of traditional Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food items. Loved being able to personalize my dish. We tried a bunch of things and some were better than others (e.g. the falafel was good, the hummus was mediocre). One thing I wish they had done better was heat up the food. I know they're making big batches of foods and serving them when ordered but almost everybody at the table had cold or lukewarm food. j'ai le seum To the server who is an Asian lady experiencing severe hair loss, maybe have an espresso or touch some grass. We had a terrible server. We asked about the hummus plate, and she instantly ordered two vegetarian plates for us. When I corrected her and explained I didn't want that, she said she put the ticket in and said it's too late, followed with a comment "honey this paris". She did not bring us drinks we ordered, but happy to try to upsell us with dessert. Then, at the end, when we go to pay she tells us to go inside because the machine is there and we have to follow her to pay even though everyone else paid outside. Then, without telling us the ticket total, she asks us how much we want to put. I suppose she was implying a tip, which is not required and surely not warranted under this unacceptable treatment. We asked for the ticket, paid the total, and left. If you are looking to stop here and see this older Asian lady, RUN!!! The only time I've had bad service in Paris. A little surprised this place has a 3/5 at the time of my writing. I got a pastrami sandwich to go and it was delicious! The ambiance cute, I wanted to come back and have a long evening there but ran out of time. There was a line and short wait (no longer than 15 minutes) for a table though the line started to pile up more after I had arrived at around 7:30pm. Service was a bit unorganized and they had messed up my order as well but the food was good. I ordered their 3 éléments au choix with some pita bread and the portions were quite generous so unless you are extremely hungry, I would order no more. Their eggplant in particular I found to be exceptionally good. The atmosphere and ambience of the Marais was very nice but the unorganized service did put a damper on things. I am American but was with a friend who spoke French and didn't run into any of the issues outlined by the other reviews here. read more

I'd been coming to Chez Marianne for 30 years. Used to be the secret. While crowds lined up for falafel at L'As du Falafel, Chez Marianne was the real deal. Brought my son to Paris for the first time, and sharing a Chez Marianne falafel with him was going to be a highlight. The usual falafel window was no longer there and you could sort of tell that it had changed. When I got my falafel "ticket," I said to the cashier, "he'll make them fresh, yes." She said of course. Noticing a pile of falafel balls that had been sitting there, I said to the man making the falafel, "can you please make some fresh ones?" He gave me the French equivalent of "yeah, yeah, yeah" and proceeded to assemble a sloppy, washed out falafel with falafel balls that tasted like sawdust, save for the embarrassment of tahini slopped all over it. They do a falafel sandwich here that is what dreams are made of and the lines are there to prove it. 5.50E gets you a rather amazing array of salads, sauces, and freshly fried falafel. Crispy on the outside, green and garlicky inside without being dry. The option of cramming the top with as many kosher pickles and peppers as you can is also a huge plus! While there are many options around Marais and rue de Rossiers, this is a classic one and has the clientele to boot! Great service, beautiful atmosphere, and reasonably priced food. The only reason we even ended up at this horrendous restaurant was because our falafel spot around the corner was closed on Fridays & Saturdays. We were sketched out by the look of the menu, but because the restaurant was so packed we thought maybe it was some sort of delicious hole in the wall restaurant? WRONG! HUMMUS, never have I had worse. It tasted as though it was made with only tahini, no salt, no lemon nothing else. NOTHING... we ordered extra "garlic" bread, completely dry, chewy.. my boyfriend saw them pop it into the microwave. Last but not least, we ordered mushrooms in tomato sauce. The server became downright enraged we did not speak French. Sorry, I speak many languages, French wasn't one of them. I personally had a good experience, in the sense that they brought us extra food for absolutely no reason, so we left with a light bill and very full stomachs. Otherwise, very inefficient service, half of the stuff on the menu is unavailable, they somehow charge extra for mediocre pita bread, and while the 2 person mezze menu is very reasonable in terms of price and quantity, the quality of the food is okay. If you go with low expectations, you won't be disappointed, but if anyone tells you this is OMG THE BEST FALAFEL IN PARIS, laugh in their face and never listen to them when it comes to food. Ever again. There was really nothing bad in terms of the food. It was completely okay. But just 'okay' you know. I really can't say it was 'good.' Service was glacially slow, despite the heroic efforts of the ONE server who seemed to be doing all the work, including taking orders and bussing the food. There were two other servers who were standing around giggling and whenever I asked them for anything, I told me to ask "that other guy." This is delicious and fairly traditional Israeli food. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but it seemed about right for the marais and is a nice sit down restaurant among the many falafel stands. It was very cold out on the day we visited, so we were very happy to take our time and savor the cozy restaurant with lots of food and a little lunchtime wine. We ordered the sampler for two, which arrived JAM PACKED with incredible little dishes-- falafel, kefte, hummus, baba ganoush, tuna, a delicious pink fish dip, some kind of fried meat pie, and a few other items-- and a side of a few types of bread. The two of us worked as hard as we could but did not even come close to finishing the enormous platter. The waitress didn't speak English at all, but I did just fine with my high school french-- she was patient and we managed to order just fine. It was really good, and I think it would be even more fun with a larger group. Pro-tip: Let the waitress select the items on your platter, especially if you don't speak french! we just trusted her to make choices, and were totally pleased. read more

L'As de Falafel is good, and it may be some people's style. Me I prefer Chez Marianne for my falafel goodness. The other dishes on the menu are not as great, but the falafel sandwich still takes the 'Marais Bargain' with 5 euros for a really great pita (the bread really does help) stuffed with oily eggplant, beets, sauce, etc. Definitely delicious. For extra credit, eat it in the Place Des Vosges one of the most beautiful squares in Paris. Seriously, don't worry about the rest of the menu--get a falafel. read more

I waited 2 years to try Falafel because I wanted this to be the 1st place I had it. You see, in 2011, my non-French speaking self stood in line for about 30 minutes for their falafel sandwich, only to find out at the last minute that I was supposed to pay inside 1st. I was devastated. Everyone around me was walking around with this amazing sandwich I'd never seen before - I mean EVERYONE. But, I wasn't going to pay and wait again so I promised the next time I was in Paris I'd do it the right way. 2 years later I'm back, no line, and have my French speaking husband order me their delicious looking Falafel. After noticing that you can get really bad falafel at King Falafel and that famous L'as du Falafel is a hectic and tourist-crowdet place, we stood in front of the jewish restaurant Chez Marianne hungryly at half past noon. Since this was also recommendet by my tourists guide wen sat down on the nice terrace in a quiet side road next to busy Rue des Rosiers. More Guests were coming in about 1 pm but it stayed peacefully and calm. The most famous delicicy seem to be mixed plates available in different sizes. Like always, we had more appetite than hunger so we ordered a big plate for two for 19EUR with 10 different dishes by choice. the waiter wasn't really an ideal of good mood and friendlieness but he paitently waitet for me to translate the french menu to my companion (some dishes like tarama and hoummus were international anyway) and also understood my badly pronounced order. Choosing 10 different dishes is kind of difficult anyway. What it looked like in the end you can tell from the picture above. Not really aesthetic, but what would you want to make out of dips and mashed stuff? An Middle Eastern-Jewish restaurant on the Jewish quarter with great falafel. There are different sections, including sit down and take out. We ate inside at the far end. We had some difficulty figuring out what to order as the waitress did not speak English nor was there English on the menu. (This was our difficulty, not the restaurant's responsibility. If you are traveling to a foreign county you can not expect that they should cater to your language needs). You can order platters and pay by the amount of items you pick from on the lower half of the menu. We ordered platters with five items each. Falafel and hummus luckily was easy to recognize on the menu, and for the most part, we got lucky with the other items we guessed about. One was pastry-like fried triangle with meat inside and was amazing. The only thing on the plate I did not like was eggplant dish (but then I generally do not like eggplant) but my cousin enjoyed it. Given the number of tourists in this area, it's not a surprise that the the place is understaffed, crowded, and EXPENSIVE. We got the plat composee that's 30EUR for two people and you get to choose 10 types of Mezze and a medium plat for 1, and you choose 5. As well as onion bread and extra pitas. For five people, we were stuffed. The 10 types of mezze was a lie though, as the plate doesnt even fit more than 6. The food is tasty, but nothing amazing. The falafels were overcooked and dried and shriveled. The aubergie sauce was the best, so was the tiziki. The hummous was not good. I do like the abundance of alcohol covering the restaurant and the variety. Good place to be for a group. read more

We shared a platter for two (24 Euros) which was easily enough food for three (even non-vegetarians like us will get their fill). We arrived at 9:30pm with no res and had no trouble getting a table for two outside. If you can't get a table, consider take-out. The service was bad - our waitress was impatient & told us we couldn't order the 6-item plate bcoz it's for one person and we needed to buy the 10-item plate for 2. This is fine but the food came out mushy on a plate & didn't taste that great at all. I would take my 50 euros elsewhere next time. From the street this restaurant seems cozy and nice, which it is! But the service my girlfriend and I got, was a disaster! Our host was impatient, unpolite and seemed to be in a very bad mood. He interrupted us - probably cause of our tourist-questions and lack of knowledge to the middle eastern cuisine. We will definetly not come back to Chez Marianne. The food was okay - nothing special.
