after walking around the beach we built up quite the specific appetite for calamari and drinks. March is the absolutely PERFECT time to be in Positano in my opinion...well, it's my first time and I wouldn't want it to be any different :) like most Italian restaurants you are greeted super friendly and handed a menu. we decided to sit outside in very comfortable chairs next to one of the heat lamps. the only complaint i had with this location was all the noise from the work being done outside. the restroom was very clean and the lemon to squirt on the squid was the most amazing lemon in the world. read more

The portions are decently big but nothing great. The price is high but so is everything in positano. We had the fruitti di mare, clams were super small and so are the mussels. Ordered the fried shrimp and calamamri. It was good. Lastly ordered seafood risotto. The rice was too al dente and I've had way better risotto than this. I felt like there was no love given to it. read more

Chez Black is right near the beach in the main part of Positano. It's really touristy but the food is still great and the atmosphere is awesome. I had the scampi and my husband had the lasagna. We really enjoyed our experience here even though you can get great food (even better food) if you're willing to go up the hill a ways to places that are less touristy for a better price. I still think it was worth it for the location here to be right off the beach and in the center of all the action. The service was a tiny bit slow but I think it's because they were so packed. read more

My favorite spot to eat in Positano. The food is incredible and great portion sizes. The service is 5* and extremely friendly, the owner John Franco is a total character and makes you feel so welcomed. read more

5/10/19 Ate here for lunch. By far the most AMAZING Buffalo Margherita Pizza I've EVER had! Pricey but worth it. The Mussels and all the Seafood looked amazing! Happy faces at every table having foodgasms. The decor in Tiffany Blue and located ocean front in picturesque Positano what's not to love? Fast friendly service. I can't wait to go back. My biggest regret was not having room for the Seafood. read more

amazing food. bad service. we had a 9 o'clock reservation and was served at almost 11. i try to be forgiving because i know they were busy but a 2 hour wait is inexcusable. however, the food was very fresh, especially all the tomato's! the gnocci was great as well as the eggplant penne read more

Absolutely nothing bad to say. For a restaurant in such a crowded location with so many tourists, I was not expecting top-quality food, but that is just what Chez Black provided. First of all, the bread was good, which is a rarity at Italian restaurants (usually it's cold and hard). My balsamic vinegar veal was delicious, as was my dad's sea bass. The service was very quick, the employees were so friendly, and the atmosphere/view was beautiful. Highly recommended. read more

I was so excited to get reservations for this restaurant in Positano. I was so disappointed in the service and the food. There are SO many places to go that would blow this place away. It is simply not worth it. The only thing it has going for it is the location. Don't buy in to the hype. read more

very underwhelming. Started with the Burrata which was just ok. I got a pizza which again was just ok. My wife got the Sea Urchin pasta which was just ok. The best part of that dish is the fake encasing it comes in. Service was slow but the bread and oil were delicious. The tiramisu wasn't great either. Definitely not worth the price for what you get here. read more

While the decor is fun the service and food were terrible. We had the lasagna which was incredibly bland and tasteless. Would not recommend wasting your time here there is much better food in the area. read more

if you want a gimicky server dressed in a sailor outfit serving you mediocre pasta go here. very hyped up and they charge you a cover charge for "bread and olive oil". terrible service. they want to get you in and out quickly as possible. hotels recommend because they have a deal with the restaurant. nice view though if that's what you are going for. read more

We LOVE this place. I stayed in Positano for 6 days and have eaten here 3 times! Food is fantastic and unremarkable. Service is great , the restaurant was packed every night but the staff was quick to seat us. Service is very good especially if the little old lady is sitting in the back on her iPad. She's the owner and service is even better if you can believe it if she's around which she always is. We were treated like family on our second and third appearances. MUST GO! read more

My #2 of the restaurants on beach in Positano....rating for 1. food, 2. service, 3. atmosphere... 1. The main dish of spaghetti with mixed seafood was very good. A 5/5. The appetizer of caprese left little to be desired. The tomato was not ripe at all, and the buratta was just OK....I've had better in Philly. The tiramsu was....ehh. 2. Server were friendly and nice. They seemed to rotate quite a bit which I guess is normal, but felt like I had to wave to get their attention. Weren't that bad though and were pleasant. 3. Like my other reviews...cannot beat the atmosphere being on the beach in Positano read more

Great spot right on the water. The ambience was great, as was all the staff. The seafood and the vegetables tasted very fresh and everything was cooked to perfection. To top off the experience, they had a 'restaurant dog' who was just the cutest and friendliest thing around! read more

Would have barely scratched 3 stars if not for the absolutely horrible service. For dinner of two the waiter walked by, dropped off two wine menu's and a single dinner menu, then walked away barely acknowledging our existence. The next time he came back 15 minutes later, only took my wife's order, walked to the railing near tre sorelle (restaurant next door) and talked to someone (who I assume was his friend) for a couple of minutes and then walked away from our table towards the kitchen. 5 minutes later I flagged him down to see if I could put in my order since he abruptly left the first time. As he started walking back he looked inconvenienced and then confused when I asked if I could place an order. As for the food, it was decent, but definitely not worth the extraordinarily high prices they were charging. We visited multiple expensive restaurants in the area for reference. Tuna seemed to be canned, or even just poorly prepared on the capricciosa salad. A small plate of Pesto was 18 dollars and 2 sausages on a plate came out to 18 dollars. They were overcooked, but didn't taste too bad. After receiving our food, the waiter never checked on us once. In fact, he never visited our table the rest of the night and eventually flagged down another server 20 minutes later to pay our bill. It really does seem like a "tourist trap". Wish I would have went with plenty of other restaurants in the area instead read more

Took a ride to Positano in December and luckily this gem was open. We had the best meal. I had the spaghetti with clams and mussels. It was excellent. We also had the gnocchi, veal with lemon sauce, and eggplant pasta. All were delicious. read more

Surprised this only rates a 3.5 as it was definitely one of the better meals we had during our stay in Positano

First off, if you stumble upon this review and are debating on whether or not to travel to Positano, it's a no brainer. GO. It is a hidden gem along the Amalfi Coast of Italy, and is just the most picture perfect amazing town along the waterfront. If your in Sorrento, you can rent speed boats, drive yourself out to Capri and do a circle around the island, swim, and than blast on down to Positano for lunch. Arriving to Positano by boat is highly recommended because of the view, however, arriving by car is spectacular because the drive along the cliff is amazing. Now for the restaurant. First off, the owners are sweet. English isn't all that great but we had the opportunity of having the owners at the table a few times. The staff was phenomenal, and we have been back to this restaurant quite a few times. I remember going here for my birthday with a group of friends and it had to be the best birthday at a restaurant ever. The food is insanely good, the Pizza will knock you out, (Recommend the pizza as an appetizer or a side to share) the pasta dishes are so delicious. If i am not mistaken the pasta is made fresh. If you have a little more money to spend, the specials are always at the top of the top. I have had the mediterranean lobster on a bed of pappardelle, and it was amazing. I would say it was right for the price too. I don't find this restaurant to be expensive at all. Its fairly priced for the location and I would say its underpriced considering how amazing the food is. I do recommend making a reservation if you want a table closer to the front of the restaurant so you can people watch. Don't be surprised if you spot a few famous people, as this restaurant is popular among the stars. All in all, if your looking for a spectacular restaurant to dine at, casual, romantic, or fancy, this is the spot. From the food to the wine to the staff to the atmosphere, this restaurant definitely deserves five stars. read more

If your looking for the quintessential restaurant that has past its prime, look no further. It's with great disappointment that I write this review. Sure, you will be enamored with the history of Chez Black, celebrity pictures on the wall, nostalgia of an old era, but it's no longer the restaurant it once was. From the moment you present, to the sprint you make to leave the restaurant, you will be left disappointed. The two male hosts (one who is in several of the pictures hanging above your table) view patrons like meat hanging in a butcher shop. It's rare to see such a display of over the top machismo. There is a pecking order to which table you will be given, flirtatious, voluptuous women seated to the front of the restaurant, and those average appearing to the back. It's comical that these two do not recognize that those with new money have little care about clothing labels and appearance, and seek an experience above all. Waiters do little to greet you and want to hurriedly get your order. Most fine establishments will help guide your through a menu, wine list or even local specialties. Not at Chez Black, they made it obvious that you should feel fortunate to be in their presence. After an hour of placing our order, we were served a meal that is on par with any number of restaurants found in the region, but only to be left with a bill that doubles their counterparts. The disappointment was overwhelming. Unfortunately, it seemed to be a common experience seen with other patrons. Be warned, this is not the place that some grand reviews suggest. You will likely have better luck at a small family trattoria where the emphasis is on quality food served with pride and friendship, and you certainly won't need lip filler and breast augmentation to flag a waiter down. Dear Chez Black, We hope you can take an honest assessment of what many online reviewers are experiencing at your restaurant. In a world full of over-hyped, under delivering establishments you have become common place. Consider becoming great again. read more

Excellent food with a beautiful seafront location along the Amalfi Coast. We had the sea bass and Italian sausages, along with bruschetta, almond cake and a lemon profiterole. The food was fresh and flavorful and the staff was so friendly and nice. Even the bathrooms downstairs were pretty. A great restaurant in a fantastic location. Shouldn't be missed. read more

So many beautiful spots in town, but I was disappointed by this one. A big part of that was the feeling that our order was intentionally misunderstood so as to give us the fish that was three times as much as the one I ordered. And our server spoke fairly good English, so I do not think it was a communication barrier. The fish was OK, but nothing special. We started with the burrata and tomatoes, which was quite good. They forgot our wine and our sides were average. read more

The food was great. Highly recommend getting the fried anchovies to start. The oysters were good, not great, no sure worth €5 each. 4 of us ordered at least 6 entrees as we needed to sample everything. We got the block cuddle fish squid ink pasta and it was excellent. Also recommend the sea food platter to start. The red prawns were ok as well not worth ordering. We didn't eat until 10:00 but they were already out of several of the seafood dishes We were not as impressed with the desert selection, but overall still worth a 4.5 star review. The ambience we great as was the service. I would go back. read more

Awesome restaurant with a superb view! Chez Black is a staple dinning establishment that has graced the Amalfi Coastal region since 1949. Situated right on the beach with a spectacular view of the ocean Chez Black offers very traditional Italian cuisine. I had a margherita pizza while nothing spectacular (what else could plain cheese pizza be?) it was very good. I also ordered the clam medley and the house speciality, spaghetti both were very good. After finishing dinner the dessert cart comes out and you can choose from a variety of scrumptious desserts. The service was excellent and I definitely recommend this place to anyone thatwould be in the area. read more

Maybe the most scenic place I have ever eaten. I stayed in Positano for a few days during my honeymoon (by the way, if you ever get the chance, go to Positano. It is incredible). My grandparents recommend Chez Black so of course I had to go. It is situated right on the beach overlooking the Mediterranean. So you get that incredible view along with the brightly colored buildings clinging to the steep cliff that is Positano. I had an excellent pasta dish with mussels and beans. It was along the lines of a pasta e fagioli, very hearty but still a bit light somehow. The staff was great too, very friendly and helpful. This was a great stop and a place I will certainly go to again if/when I get back. read more

After trying to decide between multiple beachfront spots, we settled on Chez Black, mostly thanks to the nautical decor and sprawling menu. We started with a bottle of local white wine, which was reasonable and quite good for about 18 euro. We tried the burrata as a starter and hands down, it was the best burrata I've ever tasted. Rich, creamy, a perfect consistency and supported by fresh tomatoes and basil. Definitely the highlight of the meal for me. Entrees - we ordered the tuna pizza and the grilled calamari. The calamari was prepared very simply - just olive oil, lemon, parsley and grilled perfectly. It was slightly chewier than some of the other calamari I've had, and considering we were within feet of the ocean, I was sort of surprised. The pizza was disappointing - definitely canned tuna, probably canned olives. The capers helped. The service was fine - typical for a very touristy area, even though it wasn't terribly busy when we sat. Heard a lot of people making dinner reservations, so perhaps that's when it really gets cooking! For being in such a touristy area, though, not sure it can be beat out by any of the others. read more

My husband and I ate here twice during our stay in Positano, and had two very different experiences. The first time, we had excellent service and a wonderful meal. The second time was marked by poor service and slightly poorer quality food. The restaurant is a little overpriced, and I would agree that the restaurant seeks to heavily appeal to tourists. But the location does offer a beautiful view and great people-watching opportunities. During the busy season, you'll also likely experience an increased ambiance with music from local musicians around 7pm. Overall, we were disappointed with the inconsistencies, but would probably go back again. read more

Central location on the beach and well priced cocktails and wine. Pizza was a bit of a let down. They use canned mushrooms and I'm just not down with that. I tried to convince myself that they were some fancy Italian brand canned mushrooms, which was fun, but didn't change their flavor. Try the seafood sauté. read more

We couldn't be more pleased with this place. The food is amazing, the staff are so attentive, and the ambiance is better than any other restaurant in Positano. To add to their helpful nature--we had an incident where a fellow diner stole our bag with laptop in it. We came back the next day to see if it had been turned in and it hadn't, but the owner took us upstairs and spent 1.5 hours with us looking at camera footage. We saw the whole thing happen on camera. He provided us with all necessary steps to ensure we could report it appropriately to the police and gave us complimentary glasses of prosecco while we mapped out our next steps. This place was mesmerizing, sits on the black sand beaches of the Mediterranean Sea the uni pasta was to die for you could taste the wonderful flavor of the pasta while having the fresh after taste of the sea! After an amazing day tour of Pompeii and Amalfi Coast, my tour guide brought us here to this scenic restaurant right on the beach. We ordered a mixed salad (mediocre) and the neopolitan lasagna. So cheesy, perfect amount of beef, and the sauce was so flavorful! Didn't leave me feeling overly satiated or guilty for eating all those carbs! Ordered the Margarita pizza to go -- crust was too thin IMO. Service was great! Nice family owned restaurant who made sure I had everything I needed. read more

My husband and I were in Positano for our honeymoon and we walk past Chez Black every day since it is right in the main area where the beaches and boats are. We had heard this was a more casual place to come and it is good for their pizza. We did just that. We each ordered our own pies and we had beef tartare as an appetizer to start it off. It was nothing special. I wouldn't say this is a MUST go to place when you are in Positano, but it was good. read more

Ate here on a short trip to Positano for dinner. We had the octopus carpaccio which was amazing in a buttery soft slightly lemon sauce. Next came the grilled vegetables which were pretty lame for $13 (few slices of zucchini, pumpkin and eggplant) but I did find it interesting that they put pumpkin on the plate which was pretty good. For entrees I had the blacks cuddle fish ink spaghetti and my mom had the spaghetti and meatball. The cuddle fish pasta was really interesting and delicious if you are an exotic eater. But make sure you wipe your mouth between bites or you'll have a nice shade of black lipstick. The meatball on my moms plate was HUGE and really delicious. Red sauce was basic and great too. This is the place you think of when imagining dining in Positano. Outfitted in mint director's chairs and gold chandeliers with direct views of the ocean, the place is gorgeous. I also enjoyed that they lend some pomp and circumstance to the dining occasion. The sea urchin pasta is presented beautifully, and I kind of loved the bibs you could buy for lobster. I had the grilled calamari, which was a respite from the heavy foods I'd been eating in Rome. It was prepared very simply with olive oil and lemon. It was a touch rubbery, but still very tasty. My husband had the ravioli, which was a perfectly simple dish. While this place is probably a bit touristy, I enjoyed it very much and think others would as well. read more
