Stopped in for dinner with my partner after hearing good things about the place. Needless to say we left very disappointed and frustrated. While the prices are steep, you'd expect that given the waterfront location in Positano and fresh seafood. However, to say the quality of the food, service, and overall atmosphere was lacking is an understatement. We sat for 40 minutes before even seeing our server or given water. When he finally came around he acted like we were wasting his time. The food is very overpriced for the quality and quantity. We left hungry. The prawns we ordered were pricey and only 4 small ones were served on an otherwise empty plate. The grilled vegetables were a few thin shavings and over 16euros. We waited 20minutes for someone to acknowledge us so we could request the check. Do not waste a minute of your life in this place. It is the definition of a tourist trap. read more

A little tourist trappy and pricey but still delivers on excellent pasta! Food: -octopus carpaccio: lovely thin cooked/chilled slices of octopus with dashes of olive oil and parsley. Maybe it's against the local way but I enjoy adding a wee bit of balsamic vinegar as well -linguine with pesto: uniquely more herbal/basil-y than most pestos and light! Linguine perfectly al dente. Would order again. -Monday's special pasta: rose petal pasta in a parsley, olive oil, lightly cheesey sauce and stir fried zucchini and shrimp. Appreciate very much the fun chewy al dente rose petal shaped pasta and the shrimp that was cooked just right (and not over cooked like a lot of places). -house wine: Loved loved loved the fruity house white wine! Service: professional and kind Space: a little kitschy with the nautical/mermaid theme and sailor waiter outfits but hey Positano is a cove paradise so no worries :). Food was awesome. Had the eggplant parmasan, linguini with pesto, tomato salad, and strawberry cake. Everything was very good. However, the service stunk!!! Waiters were busy chatting up preferred customers. I get that you need to schmooze your big wig customers but not at the expense of your other customers. Prime location on the beach, if you get lucky they'll give you one of the "reserved" tables right on the edge with the best views of the water. This was my husband's favorite meal in all of Italy, he was obsessed with their buffalo caprese salad and it was very, very good. He had the pizza which he loved as well and I had their prawn and seafood spaghetti, it was HUGE but I managed to eat the whole thing. There was hardly any sauce on the spaghetti but the seafood broth and the seafood just made it so flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly! This place is a must if coming to Positano! read more

Top notch food on the beach, yay! I thought they used more oil than is needed, as the seafood was obviously fresh, yet still dang good. Everything around and in the place looked awesome. Octopus salad was a pile of wide, thin slices, oiled and seasoned, with greens and lemon on the side. Great stuff. May's version of squid ink pasta was accompanied with mussels. Yum; here I get the oil because of the pasta. Katie had prawns in her seafood pasta that were amazing, yet her dish stood out for having more oil than needed for the components. For dessert we choose the dark chocolate covered balls that were raved about by the Australian sitting next to us, but they ended up just being cream puffs. I've never really liked them, and living in Milwaukee I get to eat a bunch of serviceable ones for much cheaper. So disappointing end. Side note: afternoon visit, and our server took at least an hour break. That's OK as sub waiter stepped in perfectly, but the cute "stray" dog who had been given the beach edge captain's chair to sit on, then had no where to sit and look extra cute as the guy sat there and smoked. Not outrageously priced considering the location beer, cocktails, water, and local wine were also greatly enjoyed by us after our long hike to Positano. Service was a little on the slow side but we expected that when we arrived and saw a ton of people waiting to be seated and the waiters were running around. Food was excellent for the most part. We ordered beef carpaccio to start and a salad , for the main my boyfriend and I ordered pasta. He ordered the catch of the day with pasta Jana cherry tomato sauce ! It was amazing ! I ordered the Tuesday special which was porcini mushroom with baby squid in a short flat pasta. I didn't enjoy the pasta not because it wasn't good but it wasn't explained to me properly. The sauce was more of a beef gravy type sauce then it was a tomato which I understood that waiter tell me. However despite that we will be going back this Saturday for dinner again and we are looking forward to it read more

The best overall choice on the beach in Positano. it's not a small place but certainly very casual and it's large enough that there's hardly ever that long of a wait for a table. It's really busy during the main tourist hours when the boats and buses are running through town, but turns into quite a cool scene later in the evening when all those people leave. The menu was large... offering many different specialities, but I'd certainly stick with the pasta and many seafood options. If you order the scampi they'll give you a cool tuxedo bib that will make your Instagram friends very jealous. read more

We had made reservations here at the suggestion of my dad who had been there years before. The reason I'm giving it four stars is because we had asked to be seated closer to the water so we would have a lovely view. Instead we were seated further into the restaurant. When asked if we could switch seats to something closer to the water, they said that those seats were reserved. The restaurant was practically empty and we finished our meal without a single person being seated in the many open seats facing the water. Regardless the food was amazing. Highly would recommend! Location: Right off the beach in one of the most beautiful places on the world - Positano. The place: It's huge and boasts a nicely sized interior as well as a very large terrace. The terrace is the prime real estate here, people. Very classy place that you can visit dressed up or in beach wear. Service: Fantastic. These guys have it down to an art form. I was greeted by a kind Positan, who offered me a table and chit chatted with me in Italian about my family roots being in Sorrento. He came to check on me regularly even though a different waiter and busboy were taking care of my table. My waiter was fantastic - super friendly, made a great wine recommendation and like his counterpart, checked in on me frequently. Food: I forgot that when you order mozzarella with tomatoes, that you get the whole cheese ball so... I couldn't finish my appetizer if I wanted to have room for my main. The cheese and tomatoes were fresh and local - can't ask for better than that! My main was spaghetti with scampi and cherry tomatoes. The pasta was perfect - absolutely perfect, with a mild buttery flavor that blended perfectly with the tomatoes. The scampi were right off the boat and delicious, if a bit small. There wasn't too much meat in them but truth be told, I had no idea if I was supposed to be snapping claws to get to more meat so... Maybe there was some more meat hidden in there! Regardless, one of my most favorite meals in Italy for sure. I saw several other orders coming through and the portions were huge! Everything looked delicious and the person who suggested this place says the calamari is to die for. Price point: Expensive but worth it. This is the place to get fresh seafood. read more

My husband & I came here for lunch one day after one of our tour guides recommended their pizza. We were a little hesitant as it appeared to be geared towards tourists and not very authentic. However, it could be geared towards whomever they want so long as the pizza is good, we're down! Not to mention, the view is amazing, located right on the Spaiggia Grande. We started with the Aperol Spritz which was so refreshing(and good sized)! I had the prosciutto pizza and the hubby went with the margherita pizza. The pizza itself is made in a large brick oven and the crust had a great amount of chew with the perfect amount of char! All of the ingredients were so fresh and I loved that they made my pizza heart-shaped :). As we had enjoyed our pizza so much, we decided to try out their dessert and split the tiramisu. Unfortunately, the tiramisu wasn't as good as the pizza- it didn't taste quite as fresh and there just wasn't enough flavor for me. Overall, the service was great and the pizza was delicious(one of the better ones we had while in Italy and definitely the best we had while in Positano). read more

We stayed in Positano for 3 days on a 2 week tour of Italy and it was by far the most beautiful place we visited - of course, we knew this ahead of time having numerous friends who have traveled the Amalfi Coast, as well as a good friend living in Naples. Chez Black is famous even among the natives and you will find both tourists and locals dining in this restaurant that seems like it is out of a 5 star movie set - right on the beach in the Positano cove with some of the best dishes in Italy, I would strongly urge anyone to make a detour for both Positano and Chez Black!!! Perched right along the beach side in positano, this place is impossible to miss if you are in the lower parts of positano chilling on the beach or coming into port via boat. I actually like the food here better than the neighboring Le Tre Sorelle. The spaghetti and meatballs here are amazing...the meatballs....those godly meatballs have such a smooth texture and you get two huge ones. Much better than the small meatballs that typically accompany spaghetti & meatballs. Also the house seafood risotto is also a solid choice....everything cooked perfectly al dente as per typical italian standard. We ate the veal carpaccio, black squid pasta, and clams with linguini...all amazing...one of the best meals I have ever had. Great wine throughout the meal, they were quick to bring more bottles. The decor and the location is great. We chose this place when we wanted a nice dinner without super breaking the bank. It is moderatly priced given its Positano. I had spaghetti and meatballs because after so many fancy dinners I wanted something a lil more classic and low key. It was really great. The food was good; however, i can not give them more than 3 stars because the server treated us like ' one time customer' which might be true but it is the last thing to be done since tourist pays same if not more. Also, the " 2 extra charges for the table" were added to our check, sneakily in the middle of the receipt, in-between pasta and main dishes. Absolutely hiding! When we asked about it, the server said it is table charge. It was about 20 euro, don't remember exactly since i didn't pay. When i said there is no reason to pay for table while i am purchasing foods, and if there is any written statement for the charge on the menu, they finally took off the charge. It was ridiculous. We had good time eating fresh sea foods, mozzarella- burrata, southern specialty and vogole with sweet chubby clams. We oved them all. Menu price was reasonable, Wine was priced well too. I had a poor experience at chez black for lunch today. I had heard great things about the restaurant and was dying to try it. My boyfriend and I came and ordered Parma ham with mozzarella, spaghetti and meatballs and a piece of grilled chicken. They served us the appetizers, and then didn't even stop by our table for another 35 minutes. Finally, my boyfriend asked our waiter where the food was, as we saw all of the tables around us being served. Many of those tables had come in after us. Finally, he brought my boyfriends spaghetti and meatballs and my grilled chicken did not come for another 10 minutes. When my boyfriend complained, the waiter didn't even apologize. You would think that maybe they'd take the chicken off the bill or offer us some gelato, but they just rushed us out of there. Bad taste in our mouths. read more

This place looks like a tourist trap, but it isn't. I mean, in a place like Positano, everything is a little overpriced, but with that as a given, I'd eat at Chez Black again if I was here again. There were plenty of vegetarian options on the menu for us to choose from, and they were even good about my wife's irrepressible need to tinker with her food and make substitutions. We had one pasta with a fried zucchini sauce (a white sauce with fried zucchini in it a plenty, basically) that was amazing. Also, I had the eggplant parmigiana, which I did not realize was an Amalfi specialty until then. It was heaven in every single bite. I've heard many good reviews about this place and was very excited to try Chez Black. Sadly, I have been warned by my friends that the food was just alright and was highly overpriced. Nevertheless, I decided to be stubborn and tried Chez Black anyway. During that time, I had the unfortunate to have a very grumpy and rude older waiter. He was not pleasant to me while I could see other younger waiters were nicer to other folks in other table. My bad luck! After waiting for quite some time, my pasta of the day (Paccheri with cuttlefish and octopus sauce) showed up with my Grecco di Tufo wine. The food was nothing to be raved about and the wine was pretty good as it was recommended by my car service driver. The check came to be almost $40 for olive-garden quality pasta and a glass of wine. after walking around the beach we built up quite the specific appetite for calamari and drinks. March is the absolutely PERFECT time to be in Positano in my opinion...well, it's my first time and I wouldn't want it to be any different :) like most Italian restaurants you are greeted super friendly and handed a menu. we decided to sit outside in very comfortable chairs next to one of the heat lamps. the only complaint i had with this location was all the noise from the work being done outside. the restroom was very clean and the lemon to squirt on the squid was the most amazing lemon in the world. read more

Avoid at all costs. For my 18 day trip to Italy and Spain, this was by far the worst restaurant I had the "pleasure" at dining at, and no other restaurant ever came close. Positano has some great restaurants especially if you avoid the area near the beach (I recommend my favorite at the bottom of this review). Unfortunately, my mom and I were trying to catch a ferry and so therefore chose to eat at Chez Black since it's so close to the ferry port. It was a total tourist trap and ripoff. I ordered the sea urchin spaghetti and it was so underwhelming and didn't taste very fresh, especially for its 30+ Euros price tag (!). My mom had a craving for eggs and therefore ordered an omelet; she didn't end up enjoying it much as it was nothing special. We also shared a grilled vegetable dish as an appetizer and we had much better, fresher grilled vegetable plates at other Positano restaurants. Service in the beginning was friendly, but after I declined wearing their bib to eat my sea urchin spaghetti, service went downhill quickly. When I politely and nicely declined, they kept on insisting and said that they wanted to put the bib on me. One waiter even grabbed my hand and said it would make his day to put the bib on me and didn't I want to make him smile? (Um, what?) I then pulled my hand away and said more firmly this time that I didn't need the bib. They still tried to insist and even started to move to put the bib on me, in which I insisted even more firmly and they finally stopped. After that, service was brusque and unfriendly. It's amazing that to them, I, the customer, can't make my own decision on whether or not I want to wear a bib. Note: this was my 5th trip to Italy, and I know good Italian food and service when I see it. I must warn you at all costs to avoid this place. For a great restaurant in Positano, I highly recommend Da Vincenzo which has amazing food and excellent, warm service. read more

The portions are decently big but nothing great. The price is high but so is everything in positano. We had the fruitti di mare, clams were super small and so are the mussels. Ordered the fried shrimp and calamamri. It was good. Lastly ordered seafood risotto. The rice was too al dente and I've had way better risotto than this. Chez Black is right near the beach in the main part of Positano. It's really touristy but the food is still great and the atmosphere is awesome. I had the scampi and my husband had the lasagna. We really enjoyed our experience here even though you can get great food (even better food) if you're willing to go up the hill a ways to places that are less touristy for a better price. I still think it was worth it for the location here to be right off the beach and in the center of all the action. Chez Black is the perfect restaurant when you're strolling along in Positano for lunch and when you would like beachfront dining at night. My family and I sat on the terrace and it was perfect. In early April it can be a bit chilly in the evening, not to worry, Chez Black had standing heaters to keep the diners warm. We had pizza for an appetizer (that came out shaped as a heart!) and I had the most delicious spaghetti in a fried zucchini sauce... Omg!!! My husband got the sea bass and liked it as well. We LOVE this place. I stayed in Positano for 6 days and have eaten here 3 times! Food is fantastic and unremarkable. Service is great , the restaurant was packed every night but the staff was quick to seat us. Service is very good especially if the little old lady is sitting in the back on her iPad. She's the owner and service is even better if you can believe it if she's around which she always is. We were treated like family on our second and third appearances. MUST GO! read more

My #2 of the restaurants on beach in Positano....rating for 1. food, 2. service, 3. atmosphere... 1. The main dish of spaghetti with mixed seafood was very good. A 5/5. The appetizer of caprese left little to be desired. The tomato was not ripe at all, and the buratta was just OK....I've had better in Philly. The tiramsu was....ehh. 2. Server were friendly and nice. They seemed to rotate quite a bit which I guess is normal, but felt like I had to wave to get their attention. Weren't that bad though and were pleasant. 3.
