I came here "blind" (didn't read reviews or look at their website) and saw signs posted on their door providing instructions. I called the number: 858-271-1234 and got 1lb of rugulach (12-13 pieces) and 12 hamentashen =$47 They sell the rugulach by the lb. A nice lady came out and gave me a sample of the rugulach and a raspberry hamentashen and I gave her my credit card. She took my credit card inside to process the payment and brought it out promptly with my receipt & boxes of cookies. The samples were delicious! Not too sweet and beautiful crispy. I go on my daily walks around the area and always walk by Chewys. I figured it was a cookie shop with chocolate cookies and stuff. Finally one day I walked in to check it out. I never had Rugulach before so I can't really compare it to any other Rugulach's out there. It reminds me of a strudel, but more firm and has more texture. I tried a few flavors coffee, chocolate, Berries, and peach. All was good with coffee or tea. You don't have to go to Whole Foods to buy a box of these. It is odd to me that I've never heard of this place (not knowing where it is would not be odd since it is deep in the Miramar warehouse district) since I LOVE rugulach (mostly I ate them at post-funeral receptions). We found it and ordered a pound which they boxed while we sat in the parking lot. The woman said that despite the COVID signage on the door, customers can come into the building but not the bakery iteself. This was possibly the best rugulach I've ever had. To be nice and keep our household of 2 from eating all of them (which could have happened in 24 hours I feel sure), I packaged some for my mother-in-law. When we asked how they were she said she hadn't tried them yet. Then she couldn't find them. It turned out that her grandson's friend found "cookies" in the fridge and ate them. Although we were bummed that she didn't try them, the good news is that now we get to go back and get more. The very first time I tasted their rugulach/rugelach was in elementary when we were gifted a fancy box filled with these pastries. Years later, they were sold at costco for a limited time. I have baked my own, twice, and they are labor intensive. I've tasted other brands & I hold Chewys as the GOLD standard. Knowing I can drive to Mira Mesa (about 22-25 minutes away) and get them fresh off the bakery racks & buy them per pound versus buying them at Whole Foods or Cafe Calabria or online... is just the best thing! My Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations will have Chewys pastries as my go to dessert item to bring and gift to my family and friends. Why did I wait so long??? I guess it's a good thing the internet & google was not invented then... I probably would be 300 lbs or more, cause you are really suppose to eat just 1 maybe 2, but I think, my younger me, with the sweeter tooth could eat a whole box with milk. There are so many flavors and now I find out they also sell short bread cookies called hamantashens. Open Mon-Fri 0800-1600... The car dealership offered my wife and I a bite and we were instantly in love! We immediately asked, "Where did you get this?" It was right next door and they were closed but the young lady at the desk called and they opened up for me. Since they've been sending all over the country for decades now I walked into their shipment room. Anyway they had a few trays out and the gentleman said I could try what I wanted. I ordered a 5 pound box of Rugulach from Chewys for a party. The box arrived on time and the Rugulach looked and tasted wonderful Everyone enjoyed this luxurious treat. The only issue was that the mix of flavors was missing the raspberry and apricot. When I notified Chewys, they very kindly offered to send me a pound of these flavors to compensate. Instead, I received 5 pounds of the raspberry and apricot. Much more than expected and thoroughly applauded by my friends, neighbors and company staff. I spread the joy and still have some in the refrigerator for a wedding shower coming up next month. A wonderful product and worth every penny. I know because I used to "help" my Grandmother make them when I was a little girl. If my Grandmother could have bought Rugulach (or Rugelach as she would have spelled it) as good as these instead of spending days making them, I think she might have jumped at the chance. I sent in an email order for Rugulach. I received no confirmation, nothing. I called them and asked if they got my order, the woman said no, and I asked if I will ever get the order and she said no. She didn't ask for my name, when I placed the order, absolutely nothing. Instead of asking if I could order by phone, i hung up. I will never order from Chewys again. I have ordered several times in past years and never have I had this experience. Apparently, they don't want orders from individuals. When this happens it usually means the company has been sold. They are made with real butter and cream cheese and just writing this review makes me want to go get some! These are the BEST store made Rugulach I have ever had. My friend would often bring me a case as a gift, and I had a hard time sharing them with my friends because they are just soooo good. Once in a while, you'll come across a speciality place, that sells a specialty item that is hands down the best you've ever had. When it comes to rugulach, Chewy's is all that and some. Finger licking good. I only learned about Chewy's about a year ago after a friend brought us some for the holidays, but once I went to their store and met the owners, I learned this is a family shop that's been baking and fine tuning their product for 30+ years. The owners are brothers I guess, and they are the nicest, hard working elderly folks you'll ever meet. They don't speak fancy english, but they're very kind and warm. I AM A CHOCOLOHOLIC. I am picky too. Their chocolate rugulach is AMAZING. Dark chocolate and surly "chewy". Worth every calorie. I notices another reviewer had said they have no customer service because "i sent an email and received no email confirmation"...Wake up call my friend, here's some news: "these people aren't starbucks"...you don't get wi-fi in their lobby and instant email confirmation after placing your order with their iPhone app...they are old school, family run bakery with fantastically kind people who are passionate about what they do and take pride in their product. Yes, yelp less you give your opinion, but maybe you should 1st do your due diligence then speak. They have letters from 4-5 different US presidents thanking them for their awesome pastry gifts. Yes, US presidents have found this place's yummy rugulach and thanks them for it.
