one of the best fine dining spots in edgartown! i dined here for the 2nd time during one of the busiest weeks of the summer (right before labor day) with family and once again had a great time. we made a reservation the day of, the restaurant was able to squeeze in our party of 7 and even gave us our favorite corner window table upon request. our waiter paul was awesome and the food was even better. MUST TRY the gnocchi appetizer - to die for!! i would order this as an entree if i could! also very good are the short ribs, filet with potato au gratin, lobster ravioli and the salmon. our favorite dinner on the island!! read more

Soooooo good!!! We shared the local asparagus appetizer which was superb. I had the sole and my husband had the short ribs - both were fantastic. Best short ribs anywhere. Our server had a lovely Irish accent and knew just when to check in with us and when to leave us to our own conversation. The manager came by our table to make sure we were enjoying our evening. The menu is great, something for everyone but not overloaded. We had a great table by the window and enjoyed the atmosphere very much. The 2nd night of our stay we ventured out to Charlotte's Inn on the recommendation of a friend and it was not near as enjoyable as Chesca's. So frustrated with Chesca's! Decided to try it out on our last night of a lovely, long vaca - kids are getting older so wanted to branch out to a nicer spot from our usual Shanty and Lookout with an occasional visit to the Atlantic. Saw on Chesca's website that (1) they take call ahead addition to the waitlist if you are a party of 5+ and (2) they do pizza and pasta for kids. Great! Called at 7p, was told they didn't do call-ahead additions to wait list - told them their website says they do for 5+ ///so they added us but said it could be 45 min. I said no problem, we'd check in when we got over from Chappy in ~30 min... which did. They said we'd have the next table for 5, so we hung out in the lovely seats on the porch... for another 45 min! I finally went back in to check and a different hostess said "oh, we didn't know you were here, you hadn't checked in" - to which the first hostess says, oh, yes, she did... OH MY, so sorry, we'll get you a table ASAP. 10 minutes later we are finally seated... and when the waiter comes I think, i better check in the kids pizza since this night is not going well and kids are getting tired... and waitress says "oh, no, we haven't done that in over a year." GREAT. The menu is lovely but not stuff for kids and only one of mine likes pasta... so off we go. Spoke to the hostess on the way out - she says, oh, sorry. Ya, I told the owner he should update the website. Really, you think so??? An hour and a half after we arrived Chesca's we were off to the Seafood Shanty where at least they are service oriented!! We had dinner there on a yelp recommendation. It was a success. Service team was outstanding. Everyone was all smiles and courteous, and very responsive. We go the Bento Boxes, Chesca style (on the back of the menu). It was a perfect combo of appropriate proportions. First came the warm bread with butter and white bean hummus. Good! Drinks were really good (peach bellini and Lighthouse Lemonade)! The Bento Boxes had a reasonable serving of mixed greens with house vinagrette. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I've had. The sauteed vegies were good. The lobster chowder was really tasty. The 3 jumbo grilled shrimp were cooked perfectly on the grill. I'll eat there again. read more

The food is okay. The lack of AC would be unacceptable any place except here apparently. We were all thoroughly sweaty as if we were in a sauna after about twenty minutes. The maître d advised us that our tables were reserved for a next seating in 2 hours, before we even sat down. To say they rush you out would be understatement. We go because it's kind of a family tradition but overall Alchemy which is up the street has way better food and a nicer ambiance at the same price point. We were there this past August and as a party of 5 were asked to wait for 30 minutes or so. We gave our name and were told that someone would come out for us when a table was ready. We sat outside on the porch and after 30 minutes we inquired about our table; no one came out to let us know the status. We were told that our table was already given to someone else (they apparently used our name) and there was nothing they could do. If we wanted to have dinner we would have to wait again for another table. This was not an acceptable response and in fact when my huband offered money to the hostes, she took it and immediately found a table. Needless to say not an enjoyable experience and the food was not that great. Will not be going back. read more

If I were to sum up my most recent experience at Chesca's I'd say: high prices and mediocre quality. Both my entree and appetizer came out cold and the execution left a lot to be desired. The crab cakes had a lot of crab but they were bland and a bit dry. The salmon might have tasted better had it been warm. For a place charging 35 plus dollars an entree I'd expect more. read more

I'm confused. If you don't take reservations for groups of fewer than 6 people, then why are groups of 2-4 told "we're fully booked" when most of the tables for 2 or 4 are empty? If there are three empty 4-person booths, why are you saying "this is the only choice" about the table at the front? If you can accommodate children with food choices, why can't you offer a high chair for a kid who's just a bit too small for the regular seat, leaving mom or dad to juggle him on his/her lap while trying to eat their own $30+ entree? If you're there to serve customers, why are you making them wait to be acknowledged upon entering the front door while the manager explains the way taxes and tips work to the hostess? If only the quality of the food was on par with the level of attitude, it would be worth returning. read more

Sometimes it's close to impossible to get a dinner reservation in Edgartown at the time you'd like. So you'd think a restaurant that doesn't take reservations (other than large parties) and encourages walk-ins would not be very good -- but Chesca's IS Very Good! Put your name on their list, order a beverage and take a seat in a rocking chair on their lovely porch and enjoy some people-watching. After a reasonable wait (less than the time quoted) your table is ready. Food is delicious, staff is courteous and professional- and you are not rushed through your meal. read more

Four of us went on a Sunday night in mid September, knocked on the door at 5:00 on the dot and were the first ones in. Nice setting by the window to watch the few tourists pass by. Attentive waitstaff. Had mussels (puny) for appetizer - soso. Four dinners were: halibut, pork chop, salmon, ravioli. All quite good and tasty, but I would not order the halibut again, would probably go for the salmon. Dinner for four was about $220, and that included two glasses of wine, one beer, and one bar drink. One of us is gluten-free. Asked about GF items. Waiter and chef thought potatoes have gluten. We ate dinner there last night. Walked in just before 6:30 pm and were sat right away. The food was pretty good, some of us liked our entrees a lot, some thought they were good but expected better given the price. The two stars are driven by the service. Whenever we asked our server for a recommendation from the menu she only suggested the most expensive items from each section. It was pretty transparent that she was trying to pad the check and not ensure we were ordering something we would enjoy. She didn't ask what we liked or were in the mood for nor was she able to tell us why she was recommending the dishes other than "it's really good." It was pretty disappointing given the great location. We had hoped for better. Though drinks in the rocking chairs out front is still one of the best ways to past the time in Edgartown. read more

Amazing! My husband and I had a small wedding in Edgartown and decided to do the dinner at Chesca's. Jo was fantastic to work with! We selected a few dishes that would appeal to everyone. The service was impeccable and everything was perfectly timed. The food, out of this world. Our family is still talking about it. The gorgonzola dip!?!?! For dessert, we had the snowball, which is truly one of a kind. I would highly recommend Chesca's for a romantic dinner for 2 or for a party of 23. Went with my wife and some friends all of our meals were great. (Bolognese, Black Angus Sirloin, Chicken Marsala, & Lobster Ravioli with Scallops) We split two appetizers which were really good as well (Gorgonzola dip with shrimp & pizza). We will definitely be going back. read more

I can't rate the dining experience because when I called to confirm my party of 10's reservation the day of, they said they had no record of it! I had booked the reservation over a month ago. The person who answered the phone was not apologetic whatsoever and told me they would never have let a party that size make a reservation for that time. What a disappointment! read more

I previously heard amazing things about this place so my friends and I decided to splurge for dinner and drinks. Having heard good things, I was excited to try it out, but I was terribly disappointed. Honestly, I've received better customer service at McDonalds. The service was slow and the people were rude. We waited over an hour for our dinner and the staff didn't seem to care. When we asked about it there were no apologies from the staff, it was almost as if they were avoiding us. The only time they were attentive was when they wanted to see if we would order another bottle of wine. I wouldn't waste my time or money on this place. There are plenty of options and I think I would have been happier anywhere else. I think it's also important to note that this place is not kid friendly at all. read more

We decided to have dinner here while on vacation in Martha's Vineyard. The menu had a good variety and seem to have gotten good reviews. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly as the restaurant was barely half full. We ordered our drinks & food. Drinks took 15 minutes while the food took 45 minutes. Mind you that I just mentioned that the restaurant was half full. The table next to us sat down 10 minutes after us and was served before us. Waitress offered nothing but an apology. I have been coming to the Island my entire life and have eaten at Chesca's several times. Typically my experience is enjoyable, but tonight left something to be desired. Our server did not introduce himself and was quite unfriendly. Everyone ordered appetizers and I chose the gorgonzola dip to start. I and a few others in our party watched the waiter write it down while he repeated the order back to me. The dip never came and when we asked for it, the waiter told us we never ordered it and that it would take more time and that he "guessed" he could put it in if we really wanted it. His tone was arrogant and he appeared bothered by our request. We also found the acoustics to be pretty terrible. I was with an elderly woman who had difficulty participating in the conversation, and I was unable to hear her myself. The food ended up being excellent, but the overall experience was lacking and slightly stressful. We will be trying another establishment next time we are looking for a quiet and classy dining experience. read more

Chescas is an island staple. The food is good big space for large groups and family friendly. However, it is a bit tired. So many of the local restaurants serve locally sourced food and have some updated items on their menus. Chescas has not changed much in years and the menu does not vary. That said, the food is good, pasta is simple and fresh and the menu works for all types so it is good for family. Just wish there were some updated choices. read more

Very good place for a very good dinner. Just get there early as they fill up quickly. You can attempt reservations, but only for parties of 6+. The service was excellent, attentive, and knowledgeable. The food was equally good. We ordered off the menu and were not disappointed at all. The fare is your basic tried-and-true seafood offerings, but the quantity and quality are top notch. The restaurant can get a little loud but that fits the setup and arrangement. Not a big deal, but don't go with expectations of a quaint, den-like atmosphere. You'll see all kinds of dress, but you'll fit in a little more if you wear a nicer set of clothes. read more

After over an hour wait with tables sitting empty we were told there are only 2 tables that a party of 5 are allowed to use. Not only does that make no sense but they were not willing to tell us that is why we would wait. If we knew that up front we would have left. What a great meal, but make sure you make a reservation. We took my son and his two friends (19 yrs old) and they said it was the best meal they had ever had. One of them had the linguine and clam sauce and the other had the lobster ravioli with seared scallops. I had the short ribs and my husband and son had the steak. None of us were disappointed. We went to Chescas for our final meal on the island and although the food was good (but small portions) we were especially surprised when the check came and we had an extra $8 service fee. We ordered 2 $13 drinks which were mediocre at best, my friend ordered a salad and I had the "tortoloni" (6 tortilini for $28). We tried each other's, something we do at all dining experiences and got charged $3 for splitting a salad and $5 for splitting the entree. Although I am not naive to this split concept, we ordered 2 meals and in no way we're trying to pull a fast one on the restaurant. When we brought our concern up to the manager he said although this is a common complaint from customers, there's nothing he can do. He gave us the email of the owner who although offered to mail me a $8 check was very rude stating that if I was on a budget I should have gone to a more family style restaurant. Again, it's not the $8 but it is about the customer service and this experience put a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of my night. In an area where customer satisfaction and tourism is so prevalent, I find it interesting that the owner was so quick to not only insult me but continue my disappointment with my experience. I will not return or recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

LIVE BUGS IN FOOD! We went to Chescas on Saturday, June 11th. We sat at the bar to have dinner and drinks during the last night of our vacation. The service was unusually poor but that is not the reason for this review. We ordered chicken marsala and salmon - both dishes came with chive mashed potatoes. Ten minutes into eating our meals, a large lime green bug burrowed out from the inside of the mashed potatoes and walked across the plate. DISGTUSTING AND UNACCEPTABLE. That's only the beginning of the story. We brought it to the attention of the waitstaff, bartender and head chef/owner. Each of them immediately said "this happens sometimes because we get our herbs from a local farm." They never said they were sorry or took any responsibility at any point in time. Eventually, we called the manager who berated us for complaining about their "fresh bugs" and then hung up on us. The food has never been that great in the first place, but the restaurant is also unprofessional and unsanitary. The doors should be closed. read more

While visiting Martha's Vineyard, We went to Chesca's for dinner with another couple to celebrate our wedding anniversaries. We compared menus with surrounding restaurants and found Chesca's to have a nice variety and the prices to be middle of the road as compared to other restaurants considering eating out in the vineyard is expensive anyway. The service was good, no complaints. They provided bread and condiments while we waited for our meals. We waited average time for our meals. I had the braised shorts ribs which were delicious. Our friends had paella and the salmon bento box and they were happy with their choices. My husband had the lobster ravioli with the scallops which was delicious but for the money not worth the serving which literally consisted of three lobster ravioli and three scallops for $38. Other than that, we were happy with our visit there. Be prepared to open your wallet if you are eating out on the Vineyard. Dining out is expensive everywhere. read more
