The entrees had a good flavor but everything was so greasy. I have never had so much grease in my food in all my life. Especially the egg rolls. They were literally solid grease. I had to throw them away. Too expensive to just have to throw them away, but I just couldn't stomach it. They had a good flavor, but I couldn't take the grease. Also, their seafood dish that was shrimp and scallops -- the scallops they show are in photos are the pretty sea scallops, but the scallops in this dish were so small, I couldn't even find them at first. I didn't know where they were. It was really misleading and very pricey to only get little tiny bay scallops that were smaller than pearl onions. I won't go back there. read more

It's been a while since my previous review, unfortunately the food hasn't gotten any better. Pan after pan of pitiful offerings, every chicken dish was dry and stringy. The obviously frozen shrimp were overcooked to the point of chewiness. What little bit of meat in the entrees, whether it was chicken, shrimp, or beef, was crowded out by the vegetables. Even the battered and fried chicken pieces for sweet and sour chicken were dried out, and the sauce was a strange thick mess with very little flavor. I hoped the egg rolls would be the saving grace, because how hard would it be to mess up egg rolls? It turns out that it was pretty effortless to make egg rolls that suck, the wrappers weren't crispy, but the cabbage was under-cooked so it still had a bit of a bite, and again, didn't really have sweet and sour sauce, so I had to load up on soy sauce for the egg rolls. The service was- meh. I got one refill and two table visits while I was there, even tho there was only one other table with diners. All-in-all I'm pretty disgusted with what I got, it wasn't worth half of what ended up being $15 after the tip. I don't splurge very often, and certainly wish I could rewind and make another choice, but at least going forward I know I won't be returning to Chen's! read more

Chen's is a Lufkin treasure. I've been coming here since I was a child and it was drive thru only! One tip I would give us to order from the menu. Their buffet is good, but not as good as ordering from the menu. Rangoon and dumplings are wonderful! Hubby is a chicken fried rice guy and this place delivers! My go to is the mixed vegetables with chicken plate, but can't go wrong with any of their dishes. Also, the dishes are quite large and could easily feed 2 people. read more

We just move to Lufkin about a month ago. We really wanted Chinese the other night. A friend had stated Chen's China Inn was the best in town. Well if that's the best, I wonder how much worse the other places could be. Because we were very disappointed. It's like they cooked only with anchovy sauce. Everything tasted the same. Very bland. Worse egg rolls I have ever had! The only thing that was "good" was the sweet & sour chicken. We will not be dinning in or doing take out. I have been eating or picking up food to go for 30 years from Chen's. I was raised on their egg rolls and sweet n sour sauce. When I'm in Lufkin, I try to pick up food from Chens once a trip. Pretty terrible Chinese food. I'm inclined to give Chen's the benefit of the doubt given that this is Lufkin, but the food was all but inedible. The hot and sour soup was tasty, which is why I'm giving it two stars. Beyond that - we went to Sonic afterwards, first time I've resorted to going to another restaurant after the first one failed. Tea was luke-warm, rice was stale and tasted oddly greasy, and the entrees were just terrible. My carnivore spouse who normally eats JUST the meat and leaves the veggies (which he refers to as "the garnish") resorted to eating the green onions on his dish and leaving the meat, it was that bad. Chen's has a friendly staff (at least in my experiences). The price for the quality of food is fair. I see so many reviews stating that there isn't enough food to pick from, or that other chinese restaurants have more opinions on the buffet, but I believe quality over quantity. Even though Chen's doesn't have as many opinions, the food is so much better and fresher than the other local Chinese restaurants. A lot of the reviews complain about the building being old but you have to keep in mind, Chen's has been around for quite some time and it is a family owned business, they may not have enough money to do big renovations. The building may look a little run down but everything inside is clean. Overall I've enjoyed my visits and have always been satisfied. read more

They have a buffet but I ordered off the menu. My husband had the buffet and his food didn't look that appealing. My food was cooked fresh but was on the bland side as far as the flavor. We probably won't be going back. read more

I have went to Chens on several occasions and usually use my debit card. Each time there is always a charge on my card that wasn't part of the total. Well tonight 11/09/2017 I got an alert for my card and it was charged an additional $5 above my cost so I called the restaurant and spoke to the lady who owns the place who was also the one who ran my card. She informed me it was a tip, I informed her I signed the slip for the amount of the receipt because a tip was left on the table. Suddenly she could no longer understand me and gave me to a man there. I explained to him what was said between me and the owner and he said oh no it's a charge from the bank for using your card. Well I could understand that 1) if my bank charged me to use my card 2) if the amount was the same every time 3) if the owner had not just told me it was a tip charge. Yes I'm aware the banks do sometimes charge a "retainer fee" until the charge is cleared but I have never had any of the money returned and never have I seen a bank charge a differing amount depending apparently on the day of the week. I have been eating here since I was a child. I have always liked their food and the 2 stars isn't because of that. We came to eat here like always (every 2 weeks) because like I said, we really enjoy the food. There isn't a ton to choose from, but it is always fresh and there is a woman who is ALWAYS making sure the buffet is clean and well stocked with fresh food. The reason for the 2 stars is we were sat directly under a speaker that was playing these vulgar rap music and it was pretty loud despite all the people. I politely asked the waitress if it could be turned down. I just did not want my kids hearing that mess. She kinda looked at me like, "Really?" Well, 5 minutes passed and I could still hear it at the same volume. Needless to say, it was never turned down and we had to listen to this tacky music the whole time we ate. I am not sure if I'll be back for for a good while because clearly they did not care at all about the situation...Very unfortunate. read more
