Visited on a Sunday evening for a quick bite before a show. I know it's unusual not to get a dosa at a place named after it, but the Puri Potato Bhaji was delicious. The Chili Paneer was also tasty, but I would have preferred a bit more spicy. The standout for me was the Gobi Manchurian (cauliflower) -- easily among the best I've had. The restaurant is entirely vegetarian and offers super reasonable prices. Parking lot isn't huge but there's street parking nearby too. Yum! read more

I'm not a huge fan of dosas, and this place makes pretty good ones. The Paper Masala Dosa is very big and can be filling by itself. I also had the Somosa Chat which I thought wasn't bad. Lots of seating available. Service was pretty bad though. read more

One of my favorite southern Indian and fully vegetarian spots. They have many vegan options as well. Everything I've tried is delicious and has tons of flavor. Service is quick and menu has tons of variety. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu. read more

Chennai is a beautiful and bustling city in the south of India 8360 miles east of New York or a 12 hour non stop plane ride on a jet doing 690 miles per hour. The Dosa is a delicious, huge crepe made with rice and lentil batter with different fillings - potatoes, peas, meat, etc. Chennai Dosas is a lovely, warm and fun restaurant right here in Hicksville, Nassau County in NY about 24 miles east of Manhattan. It boasts an extensive menu of authentic and I emphasize authentic, the real deal southern cuisine featuring 37 varieties of these stellar dosas that will make you smile and do the Dosa Do Si Do dance.( 2 menu photos). You can go healthy with the spinach one or get the one with cheese and mushrooms, maybe the veggies on top or my favorite- the gunpowder Dosa that will bring tears to your eyes with smoke coming out of your ears. Every single dish is made to order and per the customer's specific request. I ordered the garden soup with lentils and veggies and asked that it be prepared mild. 17 minutes later I was loving this steaming bowl of goodness and flavor that was so fresh and tasty and nourishing. The best soup I have had in a long time. The appetizers were amazing - idlis( steamed rice cakes in the photo) were divine. The vadas( same photo) or lentil flour donuts with the accompanying sambar( lentil soup) and sauces or chutneys were just amazing - crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth goodness on the inside. The coffee was hot n fresh. The accompanying dessert- the halwa ( thick paste from flour, butter, saffron, rose water and yes Love) also brought tears of joy to my eyes, again! The staff was absolutely magnificent- kind, humble yet so efficient, aware and alert, treated us like gold, 24 kt that is. The prices were really good with an average of $19 plus tip per person. They have a separate dining room for big parties. I have hosted a group of 15 there with our private and uninterrupted space and two amazing and attentive team members spoiling us. They are open daily from 11:30 am to 10:30 pm. Get over to Chennai Dosas in Hicksville and do the Dosa Do Si Do. I just saved you that 12 hour trip to Chennai. read more

Store in a strip mall. The Gobi Manchurian is v pretty good. It was very crispy, nice little kick..I liked it. I got the Chennai rava masala dosa... it was mildly spicy. Parts were so crispy, they broke.. other parts were wet and soggy... the sambar was delicious, so very good. The coconut chutney was good, but mildly flavored.. there was also a red coconut chutney, it was pretty good. The service was quick and efficient... This should really be a 3.5 stars... read more

Food was good. Basic Indian fare with no meat / chicken / fish . But service was cold and rushed. (Restaurant was near empty) It felt like the REAL staff was in the back; bound and gagged and the restaurant was hijacked by goons. LOL. Basic medium prices. NOTE: Unlike MANY Indian restaurants: they do NOT close at 4 PM and then reopen at 5 PM. So if you are an early bird for dinner and want to avoid crowds there's that . Parking lot gets cramped / tight by 5 PM. Not sure if there was parking in the back of the strip of stores. read more

Stopped in on a whim for a casual lunch. No frills place with plenty of seating and efficient service. We each had a masala dosa and a masala chai. Both delicious, well portioned, and well priced. Definitely a solid option for Indian food when in the area especially if you're looking for vegetarian. read more

When I'm in the mood for Indian vegetarian , Chennai Dosas hits the spot. My go-to is the gun powder dosa. Delicious with so much flavor and a nice heat. At first glance, it doesn't appear to be very filling but once you start digging into the 3 sauces and spicy soup that comes with the dosa you'll be surprised at how full you feel. Chennai Dosa has replaced Dosa Hut as my favorite dosa restaurant. read more

Really good food here. They could definitely have made good use of another server on the floor, but we were patient and everything was OK. The Chickpeas and Spinach was so soft and succulent... and the Paneer with Masala was excellent as well. We would return. read more

Came here for the dosas which were pretty good- lots of options to choose from. The samba it came with was delicious and they gave us extra to go. The vadai and the mango lassi were also great. They also gave us an extra vadai which was nice of them :) they have a decently sized seating area that is pretty casual. read more

Ambiance (3/5): The establishment setup is bare bones and gives off cafeteria vibes. The simplistic setup did give the place a homey feel. Noise levels were low and plenty of lighting. Parking lot in the front. The restaurant was almost full by 7:30 on a weeknight. There's also additional seating on the other side of the main dining area. Service (4/5): We had a bit of difficulty getting their attention when ordering and getting additional napkins. The food came pretty quickly after ordering. Food: Assorted Appetizers (2/5): This included 2 each of the samosa, pakora, bajjia, vada, and spring roll. Expect a platter of mostly thick chickpea fried batter and a small piece of veggie or cheese inside. I really liked the samosa! I was a fan of the coconut chutney and sambar. The lentil soup was a bit bland for me. Malgudi Rava Masala (2/5): Out of the huge dosa, there was only stuffing in 1/5 of the dosa. Of that stuffing, there was probably only a cup worth of masala. The spices were enjoyable but it did not really help provide flavor to the dosa itself. Halwa a la Mode: (4/5): This was very unique! I loved the warmed and sweet almond paste. It complemented perfectly with the vanilla ice cream! read more

This wonderful restaurant has a variety of dosas, plus many other delicious veggie options. In fact, it's all veggie, so you don't have to worry if you want to avoid meat. Try the eggplant baigan bartha, and any of the rice dishes. The Mysore masala dosa is spicy without being too hot. The atmosphere is simple but cozy, and it's very clean. The buffet was lost to Covid, but it's still a good price for a great meal! read more

This place has amazing dosas. Awesome spot for vegetarians and gluten free people. Everything here is made gluten free (for the most part I believe). Everything tastes very fresh and light. The staff are nice and food comes out fast. Very cheap as well, which is great. The restaurant itself has a very no frills feel and is very casual. read more

A decent place to have Indian food, specifically dosas. Have a variety of dosas to choose from. Overall impressive menu options. Quick service. However, food just tasted okay. The Chilli paneer and gobi manchurian tasted all the same, the paneer bland, gravy/sautéed in the same mixture. Dosas were good. Disappointed though because making it spicy just implied adding few chopped green chilies. Buttermilk could have been way better. read more

I don't particularly like dosas. The dosas here are solid for what they are. I come here again and again for the vendaikai kuzhampu. It's a spicy okra stew curry that is absolutely one of the best dishes I've had in the New York metro area. I've never had or seen anything else like it. It goes great with the fresh and hot paratha bread. read more

There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices and options to have something creative if you're not eating meat Services is OK Everything came very quickly. It can get a little crowded in there. I really want to give awesome spots like this more stars, but I'm afraid I need to give a 3/5. And I suspect it was an off day for them. I had the South Indian Thali. The okra curry was unfortunately, rather bland. It didn't have pungent flavors, no tang or heat, and really fell flat. I found the sambar and rasam to be a bit unbalanced. The roti was stale. Across the board would've loved more spice, more acid, and more seasoning. Howver; I really liked the kootu lentil stew, it had splendid flavor. The poriyal was tasty and fragrant of curry leaf and mustard seed. I also found the service a bit slow and uninterested. I feel like it was an off day for them, and I'd happily go back and retry! read more

Come here to South Indian food and dosas :). Chat may not be S. Indian but we like the bhel puri and dahi vada. Some of our favorites are the masala dosa, the Rava dosa and pongal. My son loves the vada and sambar. I like their chutney. And of course the coffee! Try their meals. Karan takes good care of us. (Restrooms are very average.) read more

We went back again for a quick lunch, flooring was clean, probably a new chef, dosas were good, The rava idli was a total disaster, loaded with coconut, and did not have the look of rava idlis, they were like balls literally, honestly we were confused, but as it was a busy afternoon at the restaurant, my husband said just leave it.dont eat it. Please check on what's going on with your rava idlis ?? read more

Best Dosas on Long Island. Flavors are incredible. Everything is always fresh and delicious. Also can't beat the price for the quality. The spicy dosas definitely have a nice kick to them which I absolutely love! Once Covid is over definitely doing the buffet again. read more

The food is delicious and staff are polite and attentive. I went there twice this week. Gobi Manchurian (appetizer, somewhat reminiscent of a good quality Asian sweet and sour chicken, though this is made of crispy cauliflower), Malai Kofta, Matar Paneer, Chana Saag, Palak Paneer - all incredibly delicious. You can choose spicy or mild with many if not most dishes. Atmosphere is pleasant. Certified kosher by r'Asher Schechter and listed by Young Israel of Plainview. Prices are very reasonable. The fact that people of Indian background eat there suggests that it is good and authentic, and indeed I love this place. read more

I used to frequent the Indian buffets in Jackson Heights, and honestly, Diwan is just as good, if not better! One thing I really appreciate is that they have their own parking lot, the dining room is spacious, and as a parent, I was thrilled to see they have baby high chairs. Those little details make a big difference. We stopped by for their weekday AYCE special at just $15 per adult, which is an incredible value! My plate always ends up looking the same because I can't resist the chicken biryani, palak paneer, and that rich, creamy butter chicken. Oh, and they mostly use chicken thighs! So tender and moist! I keep telling myself I'll try something different... then I walk back with the exact same favorites. No regrets. We also ordered the mango lassi, and it was fantastic! Just a little tip: it comes with ice by default, so if you prefer it without ice, just let them know when ordering. The food quality has been consistently excellent every time we've visited, and the service has always been warm and attentive. Another thing I enjoy is how peaceful the dining room is. It's not loud or chaotic. Everyone seems completely focused on the important business of enjoying their food. We opted for the lunch buffet and were very satisfied and both price point and quality were excellent. The restaurant itself is nice with great ambiance and plenty of seating. There's also plenty of beverage options. We've been back twice already and anticipate many more visits.

My review is only for one person who works there named "sukhwinder singh" I don't know whether the name he gave to us is wrong or right. But that guy is dark and has moustache. He is the most arrogant server I have ever seen in my life. We ordered 2 main entrees and we were out of sambhar and chutney and when we asked him, he gave us weird look as if we were asking him to give his entire wealth. and brought it and dumped it on our table. This was not the first time he did this, whenever we have visited this waiter is the worst. I hate that person and he should be thrown out of the restaurant. From food point of view I would give 10/10. Its good. Everyone should surely visit it. But the person working there are worst. read more

This is the best south Indian restaurant in Hicksville. Me and my husband have tried each and every one of them and this one has the most fresh food with homemade taste and the staff is excellent. We went there pretty late last night after being kicked out of sarvanaa bhavan and seeing how unprofessional they were. Chennai Dosas let us sit and did not rush us even though we were the last ones remaining there since it was closing time for them. Management and all staff is very professional. Chennai dosa was my to go every time but this time I ordered two doses and one portion of mini Italy for my daughter, when the order came it had a hair in it, I didn't think much of it and ask them to replace it with a new one.. But when the new one came and I was about to take a bite, I noticed a cockroach crawling out of the plate and yelled immediately.. the server came and checked all over the plate and on table but the cockroach already jump down from the table.. but they didn't do much about it.. These guys have a Weekday dosa buffet with all you can eat dosa as well as a variety of appetizers, rice, chutneys, and even desert! The self serve area is a bit small and the service could use a bit of a revamping due to the high number of customers, but overall the food was delicious. South Indian cuisine served by this restaurant is as authentic as it can get.Their low priced lunch buffet is great and is totally worth the wait as it does get pretty crowded sometimes. The cheese in Onion and Cheese kulcha was no where to be seen, and it was filled with blackened onion paste of some sort. The kulcha arived black. did not even look edible. Shikanji is supposed to be lemonade, but this was a blend of some kind of paste. The only item from my whole order that was proper was the plain naan. I will never ever order from this place again.

The food: 1) Syoa chap was good 2) The Kadhi - OMG, I was like a sambar with kadhi tarkda - UGh, horrible 3) Amritsari kulch was served cold - the butter just dollop did not even remotely melt. We told them to bring a fresh hot - well, they brought a new one that burn marks all over - clearly they make these ahead and toasted on grill or salamander - ufh. 4. pani puri - suji. Waters were good, we were given 6 half broken pani puri. Ugh 5. Dahi Balla were good 6. Asked for gurd chai 6 times - nothing!!!? 7. No dosa was available for us A dirty glass was on the table where they seated us... And we had to ask them to move it. Ok, now we will stick with Indian Delight...

They were also generous enough to comp the soup that was not to my mother's taste and offered us comps on all desserts which was so nice of them to do. Overall a definite 5/5 and we might just comeback here for all our Diwali meals henceforth. The restaurant area is very small, however there is outside seating during warmer months. This place is primarily a catering hall, so the focus/space is clearly on that aspect of the business.
