From November 2020 to November 2021 we had the fortune to reside in Manhattan, Midtown East, near 50th Street and 2nd Ave. Yes during COVID, we had a chance to do that, convenient to walk to work and not take the subway. Chenille Cleaners had a location on 50th and 2nd and its proprietor, Gilbert is a fine, friendly person, obviously after these years, we are friends. Once the 50th Street location closed, as we loved the service we continued to use cleaning and tailoring services at the Hell's Kitchen location. The clothing alterations are on point, with qualified onsite seamstress. Out of many pants and shirts altered, there were one or two disappointments that were eventually corrected. There are NO seamstresses on premises, so the measurement is taken by a gentleman who doesn't really know the craft and then sent to off-site seamstresses. The price is quoted over the phone, (not low,) and the result, well.... It was not at all satisfactory for the very simple job of taking in a shirt. I love this place and travel some distance across NY to have them darn much-loved sweaters that have been, seemingly irreparably destroyed by moths. They always tell me that the job might not end up perfect - but, in fact, I'm always extremely pleased with their work. I'm perplexed by the bad reviews claiming that the staff at Chenille is rude and that their work is poor - I've always found them charming and I've been very happy with the work. I've been using chenille cleaners since we moved into our building several years back and they've always done a great job. I decided to write this review now because of a recent experience I had with them: I dropped off two dresses to be dry cleaned, and Chenille reported they had delivered my dresses to the building on Wednesday, but my building claimed to not have them. I was fully expecting chenille to just shrug and say it was out of their hands, but instead Gilbert jumped into action - checking the tapes at the store, calling my building directly to confirm receipt, asking the delivery driver to retrace his steps. They provide reliable wash and fold service. I appreciate their quick turnaround. Because they're efficient, the clothes return well folded (as opposed to a place where the clothes get wrinkled due to not being removed from the dryer in a timely fashion). Overpriced tailoring services, do not recommend and will not go back. First time I went there I brought a pair of scrubs just to have the pants shorten a little and the top get one stitch in the back. I was shocked when I picked it up, it was $50. I think the scrubs cost less than that actually... crazy!!! Then my husband brought 2 expensive suits to get tailored. One of them was done incorrectly so he brought it back within 10 minutes ( we live across the street) just to cut a little more of the length of the pants. What followed was unreal, the lady told my husband that he brought in a different suit, like we are trying to scam her... crazy!!!we ended up taking our business to the other cleaner across the street. My family has been patronizing this local business for 20 plus years. Recently a couple of jobs (completed by the W. 57th store) incl some alterations and repairs have not met expectations. When I returned the staff incl the manager were ungracious. First they insisted that an item was not theirs after searching my account on their computer (as if I was lying) only to search further and find that it was actually in fact done there less than 3 months ago. The manager defended the unwillingness to simply take my word by stating that: sometimes people come in with jobs that were done elsewhere. Ridiculous. I paid over $35 to have a seamstress repair a torn garment (maybe 2 inches) only for it to come undone after a hand of additional wears. And when the seamstress pinned some jeans I returned bc they were longer than anticipated. They were nasty shouting you approved the length. I didnt want to mention that the seamstress was very distracted and on a personal call (which they rushed her off) so I'm guessing that situation contributed to the unfortunate mistake. So I was literally taken to the cleaners and had to pay a total of $37.50 to hem a pair of jeans 2X. They should be ashamed of themselves. We will take our business elsewhere since they don't know how to treat loyal customers appropriately. The ownership should consider easing the pressure on their workers so they don't feel they need to nickel and dime loyal customers in such a groveling manner. How many ways one can one place do a terrible job? Due to circumstances beyond my control, my building closed their laundry room and this place negotiated a rate with them. They must need the business, not surprised why. The rate was $1 a pound. I got back a receipt that said 22 pounds and they charged my credit card $24. They lost THREE PAIRS of my socks. Who puts 3 single socks back in an order and thinks that's okay? My stuff was still damp and so unbelievably wrinkly I am going to need to send it out to a decent place and get it washed again. Oh, and they obviously don't use dryer sheets or fabric softener, my expensive normally soft sheets feel like sandpaper. AVOID THIS PLACE IS YOU LIKE YOUR BELONGINGS AND YOUR MONEY. UPDATE: after lying in the "clean" sheets because I had no other option if I wanted to go to bed when I got home, i ACTUALLY AM BREAKING OUT IN A RASH. They must have washed these with bleach and rinsed them with no fabric softener, literally the only explanation for this. read more

The woman who does the alterations is not very warm. But, she is good. The first time they washed my clothes, they dyed one of my white shirts pink and refused to reclean it. They charged me for dry cleaning to get the pink dye off my white shirt. THAT SHIRT WAS BRAND NEW - was the first time getting washed. The second time they destroyed another blouse of mine WHICH WAS ALSO BRAND NEW. There were streaks of damaged fabric. I've been using them for my shirts for years, and I've started to use them for my laundry. According to the owners, who I've gotten to know a bit, all laundry is done individually, not in bulk washers. Are they perfect? Of course not. I haven't done a load of clothes laundry in 20 years, and I've used many different laundry services. They are as good or better than any I've used. Missing socks? People who do there own laundry have no idea where all their socks end up. Do things get mixed up on the folding tables? I'm sure they do, but no more that other places. In all, no complaints, except that they close at 7, and I rarely get home by then. I end up having to drop off the laundry on the weekend. read more

Possibly the most unprofessional and irresponsible tailor in NYC. I was flying out in a week and needed a dress taken in at the waist and hemmed. The lady forgot to hem the dress at all (I found the pin was still at the bottom of the hem when I got back to my apartment!) and the waist is now way too tight. Because I had a plane to catch the next day, I didn't take it back. Not like I would trust them again with my garments. The dry cleaning is ok. They pressed my dress very nicely and stuffed the sleeves with wrapping paper. But for the price ($18 for a dress!), I won't be back. read more

Chenille Cleaners has been given two chances to provide alterations, and both times they have done dependable work. My dress-- an expensive designer number from Saks-- was altered properly, with both the lining and fabric done professionally. My slacks, which were inexpensive, were also handled well. Chenille's pricing is steep, and I went through minor anxiety both times I picked up the garments. After much looking, the items were found, but perhaps they need a better system? I've always been skeptical with tailors due to past experiences and disappointments, it's one thing I've asked others to recommend. I work on 57th and 11th and pass this place daily on my commute to and from the city. Almost everyday I see someone walking in or out so I thought the heck with it, I'll give it a go. I had three bottoms that needed to be altered and I brought them in on a Monday. I felt very comfortable trying the clothes on and telling her exactly what I wanted to be done to them. She gave just some pieces of advice and reassurance and never tried to sway my decision in what I wanted, which I appreciated. I was able to pick them up on Friday and because of time, waited to try them on at home. I was absolutely satisfied. The Levi's pants went from a 29 to 26 waist and even had this cute little wedgie fit to them. My Levi's skirt looked like a completely new skirt that hugged my waist perfectly and was the appropriate length for a flirty look. And my vintage pants, you couldn't even tell anything was done to them. I wish I caught the seamstress's name, she was absolutely lovely. I will definitely be recommending this place, so thankful I finally found a place I trust. Money well spent, these bottoms are all I wear now! read more

I like to lead with some positives. Chenille is super convenient in terms of picking up and dropping off several times a day in my building, even on Sundays! Also, once an employee found an important document in a jacket pocket and called me to return it quickly. HOWEVER, I had to stop using their service for several important reasons. Almost EVERY time I got clothes back something (usually socks) will be missing and/or I will get "bonus" items belonging to someone else (also lots of socks but 2 times, underwear!). I sometimes imagine that they put all of the socks that come in in one giant load and then everybody gets a random handful back, like a gift exchange. I know that other people have problems with losing things because I have gotten emails from my building asking if anyone has found a sweater or pants that have gone missing. The final straw was when my underthings came back BURNED last time. Several parts with lace were crumbling and a bra had been completely deformed with some "caramelized" looking bits. I don't even know how you do that! Anyway, that prompted me to do what I should have a long time ago, switch cleaners. read more

Took done clothes here for drop of wash (pre sorted everything and asked the lady to wash in cold water). Also had some dry cleaning. The dry cleaning was pricy but good. Now- I don't know his they messed up washing loads that I had presorted and asked to wash and dry cold- but almost everything came out shrunk. My yoga pants turned into too tight Capri pants, the lace on one of my undergarments was literAlly melted to plastic. So I don't think I'll be going there again. Sorry :( 1 star downgrade- Update: they ruined a lace tank top of mine as well- the instructions were clear- to wash cold- all the lace is melted and torn. This place is slightly pricey... but the extra few bucks are worth it. All of my clothes came back in perfect, sparkling condition... better than ever before. And to make the sticker shock sting a little less, look out for their coupons in those random mailings you get every month or so. New customers get 50% their first order... and there's also a 20% off coupon you can use 4 or 5 times after that. They're also a little crafty with their accounting, so if you really do care about the $$, make sure you pay extra close attention to your bill. I also like to start with a positive: These guys are responsive, pick up and drop off same day, it's a great business model. The boss' son is great. However I would never trust them for dry cleaning. For laundry we use them on the week the cleaning lady doesn't come. Each time something is lost: socks, t-shirts, underwear, workout clothes, shorts. And usually it's the most expensive name brand items that go missing: Calvin Klein, Lululemon, Nike, Under Armour. They never take any responsibility for anything missing and offer no compensation. And for that reason "I'm out!" Don't send them anything you're not prepared to lose. read more

I've been using Chenille for about a year, about once a month and I am a big fan. I've used only the wash and fold and my clothes nearly always come back perfectly and smelling wonderfully. they do my laundry better than i could do it myself. It's $10 for the first 8 pounds and then $1/pound thereafter. I've lost a total of 4 socks (2 pairs) since I started, but still wholeheartedly recommend them. The pickup/delivery guy comes within 15 minutes of calling and is usually halfway up the stairs in my walk up by the time i run down to meet him. read more
