Refried beans that have that canned refried bean taste
    T P.

Going to categorize these largely as "white people" Mexican food. It's not quite as lame as "combination plate" Fiesta Ranchero 3 trash Mexican places, but it's definetly nothing to seek out if you want authentic. Prices are fair, but the burrito meat was paltry and the refried beans 100% came out of can. As someone who's a big fan of refried pinto beans, you can always taste the can brine/preservative when restaurants take this very lazy, disappointing route... Soaking dry pinto beans and cooking them with seasoned broth and *real* lard is so epically better than this canned BS. It's really a damn shame. Oh well, I won't be returning.

Open long hours, full bar, reasonably priced. Nice air conditioning (it is smoking hot). Thinly of hot (but not smoky-- air is clear here) this place has a hot sauce bar (collection). For the price, I was pleased the enchilada meal came with three, so I could sample one of each. Some of the decorations look like a cross between Tibetan prayer flags and Valentine's Day paper doilies. Competing music emanating from kitchen and main speakers: all authentic creating a busy atmosphere reminiscent of a souther city. Guacamole good, salsa boring, chips decent. Service very friendly and fast. Food predictable and satisfying.

Tacos: carne asada, campechana & carnita.

3.5 Good food, great drink & super service. Came here for $2 tacos on Tuesday. Lots of filling options both meats & vegetarian options. Not a fan of the salsa. Fresh chips were delicious. Refried beans were nothing special. Margarita was good, a bit too much ice. It was a quick stop. Glad we stopped. The other food looked and smelled great. Our tacos were really good.

Lunch special with two tacos. Hit the spot!

For quick and delicious Mexican (not Tex-Mex) food, check out Chela's. I visited recently for lunch and was not let down. Wanting to catch up with a friend during the week, we decided that a lunch date was in order. They suggested Chela's as it was convenient to work, and I gladly agreed. I'm not a picky eater, but I especially love trying new restaurants where the cuisine promises some spice. We arrived just before the lunch rush, placed our order, and took a seat while we waited for our food. Just a few minutes later our food was up, and the line was reaching the door -- the word must be out about this place already! I had gotten the lunch special with 2 beef tacos, which also came with a side of frijoles and rice. I think it cost around $8 and boy was it ever a bargain! Everything hit the spot, with food being perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the portion being just right to fill me up without that horrible "Oh jeez, I ate too many tortilla chips!" feeling that often comes after going to a delicious Mexican restaurant. Happy and satisfied, we left to take on the rest of our day. If you need the perfect pit stop for lunch, check out Chela's, and you may just find your new favorite place!

I had 1 good taco out of the 4 that I got.... Firstly , this is how I received my order (in picture). Wrap the tacos individually in some foil to keep them warm and everything in place. The one good taco was shredded pork, it was warm and tender. The rest of the meat (chorizo & steak) were cold, tough, and very chewy. This was my first visit. I don't have much else to say other than I was obviously disappointed. Try harder!

    A big winner...Chela's Fajitas.

Opened just a month ago, this outpost is now Chela's third restaurant in the greater Ann Arbor area. We got to know Chela's more than 5 years ago at their original 4.5 star flagship on Maple Road in A-squared. It's original location always billed itself as the very best at authentic Mexican STREET food...with an emphasis on STREET. The Yelp community certainly agreed with hundreds of great reviews. This restaurant, billing itself as a Restaurant & Taqueria, has got to have 5 times the number of tables when compared to its first venue... and tonight, on a Saturday, every seat was filled. After munching on their chips with two different salsas and sipping on a house '...rita', my wife went for the Chicken Enchilada plate while I opted for the Chicken Fajitas. The Fajitas were exceptional with sautéed onions and peppers a plenty to compliment the the perfectly cooked chicken. The wifester's Enchiladas were equally enjoyable. Despite the hustle and bustle on this busy Saturday night, our server Anna gave us outstanding service throughout our casual dining experience. Tonight, Chela's earned four bright shiny stars.

If the Chela's on South Maple in Ann Arbor is decorated as not-a-Taco-Bell, this one decorated as not-a-Chili's. Booths, chairs, some flair tacked up on the wall, etc. The bar is very TV-centric; I was having a quick meal on my own and would normally have taken the bar, but wasn't ready for quite that much sports announcer. I took a 2-top instead. I had my Chela's regular of 3 fish tacos and a Mexican Coke --- but was a little disappointed. While the fish at South Maple is nicely savory, the fish here varied between mouth-puckeringly salty and bland. It's almost as if the salt had clumped when it was sprinkled on the fish. Prettier in some ways, but a big step down from my Chela's expectations.

The owner was multitasking with her child on her shoulder while answering phones, and her other two kids--one around 4 years old and the other about 10--were helping out, with the older one even bringing out chips and salsa. It was actually endearing to witness and gave the experience a personal, unique touch. The food was full of flavor and clearly made with heritage and heart. We had the chicken fajitas loaded with onions and peppers, and a beef and steak quesadilla that was huge--cut in half and almost shaped like a taco, but incredibly authentic and tasty. We also ordered the birria tacos/quesadilla combo with delicious rice and beans, plus fresh chips and salsa to start. I topped it all off with a Dirty Shirley made with Tito's, Sprite, and a splash of grenadine--my favorite. Like explained overall, I'd rate the experience a 3.4 out of 5. The language barrier impacted the service, but the flavors were spot on and the food hit the mark. I'm big on ordering enough for multiple meals so I went with the nachos and a kid's steak quesadilla and got 3 meals out of the deal! The kid's portion came with two mini quesadillas and a side of rice and they were definitely generous with the steak portions! They had hearty chunks of steak, perfectly cooked and seasoned, surrounded by a nice melty cheese. Really tasty! For my nachos I went with the carnitas though I think they may have accidentally given me the al pastor as I bit into more than a few chunks of pineapple, which honestly was not my favorite when blended with the other elements of the nachos. I'd definitely get them again but I think I'd pick a different protein just in case. Probably the steak since it was so good in the quesadillas. I went through less than half of the nachos since they were a huge portion and tucked away the rest in the fridge for the next day. Sure, nachos don't always reheat great but I tossed mine under the broiler to crisp everything back up and then added some fresh chips on the side and it was perfect. I still had a few leftovers even after that and took the rest of it and added an egg on top for a makeshift chilaquiles dish! Pretty good! My one regret was not trying the churros but I'll definitely be doing that the next time!

On the way to Ann Arbor, my wife and I only had time for a couple of tacos. She always has to have guacamole with her chips and orders a side. I must admit that I could have been more impressed with the hard-shell ground beef taco (the meat was badly overcooked) or the lamb barbacoa (a bit tough). However, I HIGHLY recommend the taco de Pescado. I have had plenty of fish tacos in CA, but this ranks right up there with the best. It was moist and flaky. That will be on my "go-to" order when I go back. And I am going to have to try the rellenos many have mentioned. That dis is another favorite of mine. I will return!

We started with the complimentary chips & salsa (solid salsa btw!). The $8.50 taco lunch combo was fantastic. Lunch combos are served between 11am - 3pm daily. It came with 2 tacos + rice and beans. The tacos were NOT street taco-size. And just to level set - NONNADAT flour tortilla with shredded saw dust, it's corn tortillas with onion & cilantro here only y'all! I had the following tacos: *Pollo -- TBH a little dry, but the flavor was good. Probably would not get chicken again. *Carnitas - I was expecting pieces of carnitas but they cut theirs into cubes. I didn't mind because it was flavorful and tender. I also like how they include some fatty pieces for that flaavvor. Yum. Would get again. Their other meat options are Asada, Al Pastor, Carnitas, Campechano, Chorizo, Pollo, Carne Molida. I'll definitely have to try the campechano some time! Also, the salsa they serve with the tacos is NO joke - one was orange & one was green. I couldn't tell which was mild and which was hot because they were both pretty spicy, ha. But they were both great complements on the tacos. It sounds like there used to be a market once, but it's no more! A patron walked in to ask and then walked straight out when the gal said there was no longer a market! It looks like they've converted it to more seating, but it's currently blocked off. Glad to have found my go-to taco spot in Saline!

"Barrira quesadillas" also wasn't listed on the menu but they make it. Maybe last couple times they asked what version I wanted... or it was on a specials board...idk. I'll have to come back for the chicken. Also Botanas. They are on the menu, and while I may have some deep reservations about this unique Detroit-Mexicantown dish, I'm going to have to return to try those too. But let's get to the tacos. I love that they are on small, doubled, corn tortillas. I love that they are only $3 a pop (less during Taco Tuesday). I love that they have some very traditional fillings. I love that they come with radishes and plenty of limes. After reading through some of the reviews I was compelled to try the following fillings, which are below in ascending order of their deliciousness: - Carne Asada: It's fine, but I wouldn't get it again. - Cabeza: Tender and flavorful, but oddly dry for a typically rich filling. - Carnitas: Juicy, tender, and delicious! A winner. Among the best I've had in the region. - Al Pastor: Yes! Finally! So far, the only good version I've found of this classic here in the area. I'd say it's a must order. Oddly, what dragged these tacos down for me was the choice of the corn tortillas. They were a bit too stiff, and their flavor was so pronounced that the shells overwhelmed the fillings. Typically in this type of situation, one can simply remove one of the two tortillas and just eat them gingerly to avoid the potential failure of the taco's structural integrity. However, my tortillas somehow fused together which made the operation impossible. What does that mean? Well, in future visits I am going to be looking for other ways to make the carnitas and al pastor shine! Maybe it's in a quesadilla. Perhaps a torta? Or could it even be atop a plate of Botanas? The mind boggles. But I'm looking forward to the journey and giving El Rey that fifth star when I find it. Oh, one last thing. The horchata is tooth achingly sweet. Next time I'll try another aqua fresca in the hopes it might be better.
