Chef N' Pigeon Lake is about a ten minute drive from where I live, it seemed like it was about time I came to try the place out. I came here on a Monday evening with my dad and sister, looking for a quick meal before both had departure flights in the morning. Having grown up around the village at Pigeon Lake we were all happy to see a number of customers in the village around 6 pm on a week night.
Chef N' has both a lounge and a restaurant area, we were attending to quickly when we arrived, choosing to sit in the restaurant with a choice between a table or a booth - we chose a booth. There were a few couples seated between the lounge and the restaurant but, the place definitely wasn't packed. As we sat down our server promptly asked us what we wanted to drink, while I appreciated her eagerness, a chance to look over the drink menu is usually preferred before ordering, however not a big deal.
We went on to decide our order, the menu proclaims to be "uptown country", I couldn't quite determine was this was meant to entail, however the menu did include a variety of items. The restaurant is known to have great smoked meat, so I opted for the peppered steak salad. Our server was quick to return with our drinks and ready to take our order, we started with the bruschetta with the baguette, and ordered our mains once the appetizer had arrived.
The bruschetta was served disassembled, a different approach than usual, we concluded it was possibly to avoid any sogginess of the bread. It was delicious- hard to do wrong with bruschetta. Our server remained fairly attentive, and our mains followed shortly after our appetizer was cleared.
The peppered steak salad was served over a bed of mixed greens, with red onion, chopped peppers, and green olives, tossed in a house vinaigrette. I tend to avoid ordering salads, due to their simplicity and easiness to recreate, however I was eager to try the steak (cooked to medium). Overall, the salad was nothing to get too excited about, in the future I will remember to order dressing on the side as it was a bit heavy for me. However the steak was delicious, perfectly cooked, seasoned well, and very tender. It exceeded expectations. I would recommend choosing a steak off the menu and skipping the salad, the meat is definitely the star of the show here.
Unfortunately our service declined quite significantly after we received our mains. We were interested in sharing dessert and decided on a phyllo pastry apple pie baked to order. Almost 10 minutes after our meal our server hadn't returned and we had started to waiver on the dessert. Eventually she did return and we ordered our dessert, we anticipated a decent wait for it to be ready, but our patience were limited after waiting already, as we were now the only table in the restaurant.
The dessert was enjoyable, fairly standard apple pie and ice cream- again something pretty hard to screw up. We asked our server for our bill immediately after she brought the dessert. However she did not bring the bill and by the time we were ready to leave she hadn't returned. We went up to the front of the restaurant and eventually had to approach the back of the restaurant to get her attention.
Overall, the loss of service gave us a somewhat disappointing experience. The prices were a bit high, but not unreasonable for dinner time. The meat was delicious and the meals were good quality all together. Chef N' is a great place to stop by in the summer if you're visiting or passing through the Pigeon Lake area, or even in the winter if you're around. I will likely eat here again in the future and hopefully get to enjoy the restaurant with improved service. read more
