We made reservations a month ahead of time to ensure availability. Entering this locale, it commands a small but efficient corner store footprint. Our maître d' escorted us to a wonderfully located table and from there it was a dream of an eight-course dinner with wine, cocktails, Korean drinks, and delicious food. Service was awesome. One of my benchmarks as a test of good service is to see if or how close my water glass gets to empty. Never went below three fourths. Each plate of Korean-style delicacies was better than the rest. It made the meal feel much more complete Screw Bar -- 5/5 Black sesame dessert -- 5/5 We paired the meal with Esprit Leflaive Pouilly-Fuissé 2018 -- 5/5. Probably one of my favorite parts of the entire dinner and a beautiful match with the menu. Service was very good. We sat at the chef's counter, where you can watch the chefs working nonstop in a very tight kitchen. Usually I find an open kitchen exciting to watch but this time I almost felt bad for them -- they looked like they were really fighting through service in such a small space. However, I ended up cancelling early (had planned on several weeks in a row) since the overall experience was not that convenient and definitely not worth the cost. 1) Flavors: The food tasted good, but most of the time was very similar to what I would make for myself. If it were just a matter of saving time, that would be fine. But for $32 a meal, I was hoping to enjoy the chef's skills and eat something a little more interesting. For example, every single vegetable side had only garlic and no other spices. Also, the grains were usually completely plain (e.g. plain rice, plain quinoa). 2) Variety: Across the nine meals I tried, there was a great deal of repetition of the sides. 3) Size: For $32 a plate, would have been nice to have smaller grain and larger protein. 4) The logistics: There was no detail on the website or even after ordering regarding how the delivery would occur. I then was told the only option was a six-hour window starting at 6am. Also, I had to send a number of emails to clarify the procedure. Uri always wrote back pretty quickly, but it was too many emails in my opinion. Chef Sean and I met on a rainy March afternoon over coffee and I was immediately comfortable with him. We talked about the party, 30 people or so, ideas or dietary needs and a menu began to form. Planning ahead--2 months for me--was important since I've never done anything like this. We agreed to move forward together and Chef Sean was attentive to every detail of the planning with us. Cut to: the day of the party. Chef Sean arrived with his team--Chef Reid making clam pizzas out back in oven, Sotaro serving food and mixing the tastiest and most creative drinks, Chef Sean in our kitchen moving with efficiency. Guests arrived at 7pm and they were fed (and watered) until almost midnight. Every course was delicious, with the next one better than the last. Fried eggplant sandwiches, Heritage chicken, Arrabiatta...each surpassing any expectation we could have conjured. And then they cleaned and left. Like magic! Amazing. Wonderful. All guests wowed.
