Let's get straight to the point and why you are reading this review... first they have pretty good pizza... nice variety of pizza. Now the "negatives" the service can be somewhat slow at times due to long lines or just slow service. There is also a large lack of indoor and outdoor seating which gets take up pretty much instantly in summer and such. I was driving through Elk Rapids on a Sunday afternoon and this was the only restaurant open. There was a line to order food and it moved pretty slow. While I was waiting I noticed that they had a bunch of articles on the wall from local publications about how good their pizza is. This set my expectations fairly high. They have pizza by the slice so I got a slice of pepperoni and a slice of 7 cheese. The pepperoni was your standard pepperoni pizza, nothing special about it. The 7 cheese was good and they definitely don't skimp on loading the cheese on. The crust on both pizza was thick but kind of bland. I was left wishing I had something to dip the crust in. Overall it was a good local pizza place. But I won't be dreaming about the pizza I had or going out of my way to go back. read more

So happy this place is still in business after all these years. It's a classic part of Elk Rapids. The folks who work there couldn't be nicer. Excellent salads, too. They even sell dough for those nights you want to make pizza at home. My only (tiny) complaint is they don't sell slices after 3pm. Great pizza! Ordered two pizzas ahead, one special order and a Bayou Boy, both were ready when promised and delicious.

I don't quite get the 5 star reviews here. We stopped in on a Monday night, thinking it might not be too busy. Wrong. It was very hot inside the restaurant, so you had to feel for the cooks, but the guy didn't seem to want our business. Maybe the heat was making him grumpy, but that doesn't seem like a good first impression to give people. Due to the length of time it would take to get our order (45 minutes) and the heat inside, we decided to place our order to go, and 2 of our party waited for it while the rest of us headed back to the house. By the time we placed our order, the owner's estimate for our food was 1.5 hours. Well, the food was cooked in closer to an hour than 90 minutes. The pizza crust was very tasty, but I concur with another reviewer that the olives were very salty. I found the pesto itself on the Chef Charles special overly salty, too. The large Mediterranean salad was tasty, and a good size for 2 people. The subs had a decent amount of meat and cheese, and the bun was quite good. I would go here again, but avoid the olives and the pesto due to the salt. The way the owner acted reminded me a bit of a certain "Seinfeld" episode. He seemed so stressed and busy that he could afford to come across like he didn't care if we walked out the door. While I'm glad we tried the pizza, I hope he isn't always that gruff. read more

My mom ordered a turkey sandwich that came out after a 20 minute wait and it disappointed - there was one slice of turkey. We were also told French fries would take 40 minutes? Unless they're cutting fresh potato's, blanching them, and then frying them would it take 40 minutes... and the fact that the pizza and sandwich were subpar makes me believe they just didn't want to make us French fries. Chef Charles has re-opened under a new owner but they are still doing an amazing job. Pizza is as good as it ever was.

I have been coming to Elk Rapids every summer for my entire life and this is hands down my favorite place to go downtown. When you eat the food from Chef Charles you can tell that every ingredient is high quality. Everything on the menu is delicious but my favorite is the turkey sandwich with pesto on it. To give you an idea of how great the homemade pesto is, I buy a to-go container before I head back home and I will freeze it so that I can have Chef Charles' delicious pesto to cook with throughout the year. The pizza is unique because of the wheat crust. You must try it! Such a cozy, friendly "up-north" restaurant with food that would be a hit anywhere! read more

I'll tell you the secret to the most amazing pizza in the world. Wheat flour. That's it. Chef Charles (Chuck), mixing fifteen percent wheat flour into his dough (trust me, I've made it). And he makes it fresh every morning when he comes in at five am to start. This man is dedicated to his profession, and it shows through from his regular pepperoni, sold by the slice, or any of his "pizzazz" pizzas. His homemade pesto, and manually sliced meats.
