This eatery has been around for a while, been always consistent in its high quality and therefore become a magnet for that hungry craving and adventurous foodie. Of the handful of Sri Lankan establishments in the SFV and its vicinities, Apey Kade provides the largest selection of staples, main dishes and those addicting appetizers called "short eats". Be it the fish roll (also called a Chinese roll), the cutlet, the patties, masala vadai, the scotch egg or the bacon & egg pastry, to name a few, everything is good here. For the mains, they have meals for string hoppers, hoppers, godamba rotis, pol roti and more. Let us not forget the ubiquitous rice and curry, the banana leaf rice packets and the lumprais. Important to note, for those that question it, Sri Lankan curries have a very different aroma, flavor and taste profile than food from any other country. The offerings here, are fresh and cooked with high quality Sri Lankan spices and ingredients. The pol (coconut) sambol is a must, it is intoxicating. Apey Kade is helmed by a delightful husband (Lalith) and wife (Niza) team, who are the culinary trifecta - owners, chefs and servers, at this small and cozy restaurant. Their humor, warmth and Sri Lankan hospitality, enhances the culinary dining (or to go) experience, that makes you desire to come back here, again and again.

Being able to communicate with the owner is awesome. He is filled with personality, enjoys life and spreads joy. The food is awesome. It is of-the-best Sri Lankan food. Their items in the display case are good too, don't skip those, try them all! Definitely get a chai, it is SO delicious! If you are nearby and reading, come!

The timing was 6 pm to midnight and I made sure to put that on my calendar for their first presentation. The inside is cozy with two tables, with the rest of seating outside. There are well known Sri Lankan musical hits, playing in the background. Menu consists of both plain and egg hoppers (cooked perfectly, with an over easy to medium liquid yolk, just the way I like it). Other dishes are chicken curry, lentil curry, pol (coconut) sambol, seeni (onions and chillies) sambol, white rice and pol (coconut) roti. What clearly stands out at this restaurant is the culinary prowess of the Chefs (headed by the Matriarch) and the freshness of all the offered dishes. They came out one at a time, just after they were prepared in the kitchen, accompanied by intoxicating aromas. The sambols were addictive. All the food was distinct and tasty, bursting with complex flavors and a harmonious blend of chili heat and several authentic Sri Lankan spices. If you get the chance to separately get their chocolate roll cake, it is amazing. This is a family operation, with the mother and daughters cooking and also affectionately serving their customers. Service all round, was attentive, timely and nothing short of exceptional. Need to be going back. Thank you, Taki and everyone else, for a delightful and memorable dining experience.

Tandoori platter was excellent with really tender chicken and lamb kebabs. The avocado bhel was good to start with. The chicken tikka masala was very flavorful. The lamb vindaloo was also nice and spicy just like we ordered. It was bursting with flavors and the ajwain paratha and onion chilli kulcha were the perfect accompaniments. We thoroughly enjoyed the great dining experience.

The food is really good but it is a bit pricey (likely due to the location). Butter chicken - We ordered it mild and there was no spice, which was great for me because I am very spice intolerant. This was my favorite dish of the night; it had a lot of flavor and the chicken was cooked well. 5/5 Whole wheat roti with butter - This was a bit harder than I expected, maybe because it's whole wheat? I'd skip this and order the naan instead. 3/5 Chicken tikki masala with dark meat - This dish was also very tasty and had a bit of a kick, but a doable level of spice. 4/5 Garlic naan - Really tasty and the perfect pair for the curry dishes we ordered. 4/5 Gulab jamun - When we ordered this dessert, we were told it comes with two balls. But when it arrived at our table, there were three (there were three of us eating together and we had planned to just split the two). This is my favorite Indian dessert, so I really appreciated that the kitchen added an extra one for us! I've had sweeter versions of this in the past, but it was still sweet and was the perfect way to end the night. 5/5
