We did a mystery ride and happened upon this place. We ordered a sampler, schnitzel, spatzel, onion apple soup. Each item was better than the next. Undecided about dessert, we ordered both the apple streudel and the Black Forest cake. They were both so good that even after eating all that, we still can't decide which item we liked best. Inflation is taking the luster off Checkers Old Muchen for us, we have been here at least 50 times in the past 6-7 yrs in the last 3-4 yrs prices have gone up nearly 50% and the portion sizes have gone way down. Ate there a few nights ago, no bread basket with butter and pretzels, just a basket of rather hard pretzels, Red cabbage was about 70% water about 3 fork fulls of mashed potatoes and about 1.5 inches "ridiculous" of knockwurst (see photo).Only 2 lighter beers on tap and a few dark for 8.50 a piece with a big nearly 2" head..should be filled to rim for that price.......Schnitzel was pounded outrageously thin as well, used to be at least twice as thick. Often in the past they would give you two pieces of pork. For $24.00 I expect more and expect to leave full especially from a German restaurant. The food is good but everything is deep fried schnizel, sausages , pancakes ..definitely need to eat there in moderation...but as we know everything deep fried tastes good ...For spending 250.00 for dinner we did not see the value any longer. Used to see the owner and his sister there all the time, have not seen either is a very long time, they seem to have to many employees working service is good but people standing around ..they could save some money and moderate price increases with less idle labor. read more

This is a small mom and pop German restaurant that has a very foreign feel to it. It has some fun decor and service was good. Our waiter suggested the Bavarian platter and a pork dish. Been here a couple of times in the past and the place never disappoints. Great beer selection. I had the bitburger lager and wife had the Spaten Octoberfest. Both were cold and very good. We both had the Bavarian Platter which was a combination of sauterbraten, Wiener schnitzel, red cabbage,speitzel, brick wurst and knockwurst. I ate my plate clean but enough that wife took half home with her. We shared a huge slice of apple strudel which was very good and finished with a cappuccino. You have to be impressed with this place mostly because it is full of character. Walking in you are subsumed into a Oktoberfest theme and you have to remind yourself you are in sunny Fla. There are German beer mugs for the hardy souls that drink a certain number of liters at this place. This cute little place brings a bit of German charm to Pompano Beach! It was SO hard to choose because everything on the menu sounded absolutely delicious, but I went with the potato pancake appetizer, the chicken schnitzel entree with spaetzle and red cabbage sides, and the apple strudel for dessert. The potato pancakes were perfect, great crunch with a subtle onion flavor that I really enjoyed. My favorite part of the entree course was actually the red cabbage - it was incredible! It had a good texture (not mushy) and was rich in flavor with a good balance between sweet and sour flavors. I felt that, while tasty, the schnitzel could have used a bit more flavor, either in the gravy or the seasoning in the breading. I went classic for my first visit, but I think one of the options with more veggies and sauce variations might be more to my personal tastes. The spaetzle I would most likely skip next time, the plain version seemed completely unseasoned and I can't say I was personally too fond of the texture. Now. The apple strudel. Oh my GOD. I'd drive up to Pompano just for this dessert. It was absolutely divine, the apples were the perfect consistency and I loved the caramel sauce and flaky crust. Served warm with some vanilla ice cream, this was the perfect way to end the visit. So glad I could finally satisfy my German comfort food cravings. We had reservations and it took 15 minutes to be seated. So not a great start. The food was not great. Large portions but quality was poor. The meat was overcooked (dry) and the gravy was watery and salty. I've had real German food this does not do it justice. I would not recommend this place to a friend. read more

We started with the Sausage Platter, and then the Schweinebraten, Gulash and the kids Chicken Schnitzel Fingers. They were delicious and it was a lot of food. Making arrangements for lunch with a buddy seemed to be all over the place this random Wednesday in March of 2019. I had errands to run in the Lauderdale area and my friend threw out some options. Each time he said "Checkers" to me I had to tell him; "I swear I keep thinking about the fast food chain when you say that". He explained to me the details, was unaware of it's existence and I said that's the spot. We met at flannigans for a drink to kickoff the afternoon. It's just down the street from Old Munchen. I was excited to know that this authentic German cuisine has been serving it up since it 1982. It was after 2pm when arriving, parking was easy for us in the back. Lot is small and I'm sure it's difficult when busy. Entering from the back you're greeted with a cool beer tap fountain, which was a new sight for me, thought it was dope. You open the door to a cozy German style cabin look, with wooden shelves, beer steins everywhere, some with names for patrons who've completed a beer drinking status at the bar. I believe you have to drink a boot of every beer on tap to obtain such status. Beatrice was tending bar and was very attentive, helpful and made it feel more at home. She was later relieved of her post from Yanna who also took care of us and the rest of the guest that came. Thank you ladies for making the afternoon more fun that day. By the time we got settled and ordered happy hour began and the specials are awesome. Ordered a couple of beers in the boot, first time for me delicious German beer; followed up with some Kartoffelpuffer & their bread/pretzel basked accompanied with butter and spicy mustard. Having a couple of beers, eating the carbs, appetizers and wanting dessert we went with one entree. The famous Barvarian Platter comes with everything they offer, definitely recommend and you have a choice of two sides. You got bratwurst, knockwurst, wienerschnitzel, & your choice of saurbraten or schweinebraten. Hammered everything and my teamfat status wanted two desserts but only went with the homemade apple strudel. So fricking good. It's not that close for me otherwise I would frequent that happy hour more, the foods great, beer is strong and always pouring, staff makes it even better. Definitely stoked to go back. I did breakfast and it was awesome!!! Just like the ole' Nook! Food came out super fast and was hot! Staff are so kind, the restaurant is super cool with all these mugs everywhere that have names on them for patrons that are regulars. Haven't been here for a while but this place never fails to impress me! The boot sized beer was a highlight I always try different seasonal beers on their menu. The 2lb pork shank is a must but the pork stroganoff and fried chicken were also amazing today. Don't forget to sample their sausages for appetizers. Looks great in the photo but the chicken was so chewy I couldn't even eat it. I must have had 3 bites of my food and gave them the plate to take away. No one even noticed or seemed to care that I didn't eat it.. usually when you leave a plate full like that, someone will ask if everything was alright. We sat at the bar and waited 15 minutes before anyone noticed our drinks were empty, then waited another 15 minutes for those drinks. Hubby got the Turkey Rueben and it was tiny and soggy. This was my 1st time at a german restaurant.we started off with potato pancakes with applesauce. I would have never thought to put apple sauce on potatoes but it worked. The main meals bavarian platter with the pot roast and a rolled meat with pickle dish where excellent. The service was great and the food came out fast. We visited on a Friday night inside the restaurant was really packed and very loud inside. I had to yell just to be able to talk to my wife. It was very small inside. I use to live in Florida in the area for 15 years. We downsized and still have our vacation home here. This is our GO TO WHEN YOU NEED GOOD OLD HOME COOKING. I lost my mother in 2016 to Ovarian Cancer and whenever I eat their cabbage rolls, I tear up because they taste exactly like hers. Great quaint atmosphere. Great food, great service. Family friendly. Clean and sanitized. They have valet parking in back. Easily accessible. Gorgeous patio outside. A MUST GO TO FOR GREAT FOOD. The Hunter chicken is phenomenal too. Try a German wheat bear. We used to come here a lot when we first moved to pompano beach... then they had a fire and temporarily relocated to LBTS. They reopened in this location in the Fall of 2012 and we've been coming ever since. When our friend Ariel W told us it was one of her bucket list places, we realized we hadn't been in awhile...so the perfect excuse! We made reservations -- which I highly recommend even midweek and off season as the place is small. Every inch of the walls is filled with beer steins, pictures, plaques etc. There is limited parking behind the restaurant so plan accordingly. There are a ton of beers. They rotate what's on tap, but you're sure to find something you like. Plus they have wine and iced tea and soft drinks. You'll notice cute little and big "boots@ of beer passing by. They have a card system so that when you have had so many beers you get a plaque. I didn't ask the specific details... The bread basket served on sitting down has black bread slices and small pieces of pretzels. Two cups -- one with mustard and one with butter -- are on the plate for dipping. We each got a different entree: sauerbraten, pork schnitzel, pork loin. My dish was the jaeger schnitzel. The pounded thin pork cutlet is unbreaded topped with onions and mushrooms in a brown gravy. The brown gravy is lick your plate good! You get your choice of two sides -- mashed potatoes, red cabbage, vegetables, warm or cold potato salad, applesauce, etc. I love spaetzl -- the german version of homemade small pasta. So I ordered that along with some applesauce. Everyone seemed to love their meals. Lots of empty plates! For dessert, they had a choice of apple strudel, German chocolate cake, pineapple upside down cake, Black Forest cake. Two of the gals shared the German chocolate cake. I snagged a taste -- yum yum! Service was friendly and dinners came out fast - especially considering there was a huge birthday party going on behind us. We need to come back sooner next time! read more

We revisited an old friend in Checkers @ Pompano Beach & it did not disappoint! We sampled the chopped salad & fried cheese appetizers - each terrific. Then we had pork stroganoff, chicken schnitzel & a Friday Fish Fry. Every bite was more delicious then the one before. We came home with 4 takeout containers! What a great place! I love the decorations in the atmosphere here. The food was also amazing. We want to appetizer that came with two different types of sausage and sauerkraut and their potato pancake. And a potato pancake taste so good with the sour cream you have to give it a go. My husband and I also shared a pork shank which just came right off the bone. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
