Went earlier today to get some food through the drive through and one of the employees in clearview from the food window was not wearing a mask or gloves and was openly handling food. All other employees I could see were complying except for her but it made me super uncomfortable as a customer. I called later to complain and when I pointed it out the employee on the phone told me that in fact everyone was wearing masks and had no idea what I was talking about. This place is a real health hazard since they clearly aren't making all their employees comply with the legal standards set by the Health Department and are willing to openly lie about their current practices to their customers. This was our first time to a checkers and we were very pleased. They had great deals, the food was no compromise- delicious. The portions were right for me and they had a good menu selection. Came wrapped in burger foil - soggy on top, crispier on bottom, needed way more powdered sugar. 1/5 Stuffed Oreo cone: I'm not a huge fan of chocolate ice cream but I decided to get the swirl for the Oreos sakes. Chocolate flavor easily covers over any vanilla. A lot of ice cream on top and then an overwhelming amount of Oreo cookies once you hit the middle of the cone. I liked how the Oreo cookies were soaked in the ice cream though! I'm no longer a Checkers virgin... It was about time. Honestly, based upon one visit, 3 stars is a stretch. But the fries blew me away, so I'm being generous. Let me explain. On a weekday at like 6PM, I think both of the windows should be open. That line gets long. But just my luck - only one was open. The line moved painfully slow. Then, once we got to the ordering box, we saw that none of the deals were on the menu. There was a giant 4 for $4 sign just before entering the drive-thru and we wanted to see what items were included in that deal on the menu, but alas - not even a mention of it on there at all. And we didn't want to hold up the line by asking about it, so we didn't. As I mentioned, the fries are insanely good. Someone else made a Popeye's reference and it's true. They're seasoned like Popeye's fries. But somehow, they're better. Great crispy bite on the outside and amazingly soft and delicious on the inside. We devoured them all in the car on the way home. Bit of criticism: I found the meal sizes to be totally inconsistent. We ordered two medium meals and got HUGE drinks, like the extra large size from McDonald's, and yet the fries were teeny, like about the size of the palm of my hand. Very strange. My burger was tiny as well. I liked that it wasn't very greasy, but it was gone in about four bites and that's sad... Oh, and they don't have Dr. Pepper. They have Mr. Pibb. But they didn't tell me that until I asked them why it tasted off. (Yes, I can tell the difference!) I hardly ever eat fast food anymore, probably once every 2-3 months. I have a SUPER sensitive stomach so Checker's Big Buford burgers are the only fast junk food that suits me well. I can't even eat Wendy's anymore as of the last several years nor even Five Guys (too greasy which messes up my stomach). I tried few things on the menu but only really like the Big Bufords and the French Fries! Their french fries are AMAZING, they are like Popeye fries but much better. The Chili Cheese Fries are phenomenal too but I feel too guilty eating them so don't order them anymore. The Spicy Chicken Sandwhich is not good. The chicken patty is just too thin, it is a joke really how thin and low quality the chicken meat is. The wings are pretty good but not that memorable. I have been going here occasionally for years. The service and management is always very respectful and top notch. The odd times we do come here is when we come back from the club late at night since they are open until 3AM on Friday and Saturday nights! My husband cautions me about writing this review - but I'm going to present the facts and let everyone decide for themselves. We were busying packing up our condo, as we were a couple of weeks from moving into our new home. As we rushed around, trying to complete all of our errands, we realized that we hadn't had a single bite to eat all day, and decide to grab a quick lunch from Checkers. My husband gets the fish sandwich with onion rings, and I get the Big Buford with french fries (please note that we did not have anything in common with our order). We got a bit of attitude from the staff - the check out girl keep cutting us off as we were trying to place our order. A little annoying and our hunger probably made us a little more gruff then ususual. My sandwich wasn't as thick as the pictures, and the bread was a little soggy from the grease (this is not necessarily a bad thing), but it was still fairly tasty. My fries were crispy and well seasoned. Basically, better then most fast food burgers, but definitely not the best fast food burger I've had. So I give it 3 stars. After eating, we made another run to Home Depot - when my tummy felt a little...weird. Like there was a lump of lead in it. And a little queasy. I didn't really think much of it, because I did scarf down the food pretty fast, and I'll admit, I was also pretty stressed out about the impending move - I figured that it was just a combination of eating too fast and nerves. After Home Depot, I started to feel worse, and decided that it *had* to be nerves, and decide to take a quick power nap. Upon waking from my nap (which was less then a hour), I made a MAD DASH to the bathroom where I proceeded to spend the next 6 hours, hugging the toilet and hurling up every last bit of burger and fries and diet coke I had in my stomach. Now, I am NOT saying that Checker's gave me food poisoning - because I didn't get my vomit tested and I don't want to be open to a lawsuit or anything - so PLEASE NOTE I am NOT saying that Checkers gave me food poisoning...especially as it COULD have been my nerves...but IF they did give me food poisoning (and please note the IF), I would like to say... ...THANK YOU CHECKERS! You have earned an additional 1 star bump up...because 1) I love vomiting (no, I do not have an eating disorder...but vomiting feels good to me!), 2) due to the vomiting, I got out of packing, which I absolutely hate, and 3) because I vomited for 6 hours straight...I ended up losing 7 pounds! SEVEN POUNDS! WOOHOO! OK, I gained it all back the next morning with Waffle House...heh...but if I DIDN'T vomit for 6 hours, I would have GAINED 7 pounds after my WH run, instead of breaking even...so I count this as a WIN!!! I come here all the time because when I get off work its my exit to get home. They always have pretty good deals, and usually I get a nice guy who helps me and allows me to use coupons on different transactions. Last week I got a indian guy who was very adament about not letting me use two coupons which was fine and I told him I would only use one coupon and cancel my other order. It's good to know that you can count on old friends. I hadn't seen my best friend - the guy who was the best man at my wedding - for nearly a year. It was his birthday last week, and I happened to be at a snoozer of a networking event in DC. My family stopped in for celebratory milk shakes after our son won a poetry competition the other night. He loves their chocolate milk shake loaded with Oreos, and the fact that one needs an enormous straw to be able to drink it. Everyone got milk shakes but I, maybe due to being pregnant, very uncharacteristically decided on chili cheese fries. I'm not normally one for orange liquid squirted from a pump type cheese... but ohhhh wow these are really good! They have just a hint of spice, and the fries are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, just the way I like them.
