The smell when the door was opened was amazing. It was a bit like home which was nice. The food however tasted like a different story. I now understand the "greasy" comment regarding the tacos. Yes, they were a little bit but it wasn't horribly offensive. Also, tacos can simply be a little greasy. It's fine, not a deal breaker. The tacos were very small portions, a bit smaller than the street tacos I'm used to. The carne asada was OK. It had a decent flavor but was like "pow" flavorful or OMGosh I have to have more. It satisfied my craving. The carnitas were also OK. Nothing super exciting. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for food but wouldn't be offended to have it again. I appreciated that it's also a small store which sells a variety of meats with some decent sales. Spices and a small amount of fresh produce. Customer service was pleasant and efficient. read more

Chaviras a local food market with two locations in Las Cruces. They also prepare mostly Mexican food items to take out. This location even has drive through service. They have butcher shop for those looking for fresh meat. Chaviras has a great selection of fresh Mexican pastries, fresh produce and a selection of frozen food options and canned goods. My wife and I picked up a couple of bean and cheese burritos to take home. I just wish that they didn't use LARD on their beans, as we do not eat pork. As an observation, Chavira is a Spanish family name. read more

I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across this place earlier this year because I like the food and at the time, the portions were reasonable. I stopped by once every other week on average but I haven't been here in over a month. I swung by to get some dinner and was surprised to see that my usual order of two burritos were mostly beans and cheese with very little of the other filling. The carne asada burrito used to be mostly meat and peppers but this time it was mostly beans. The chile relleno burrito used to have a lot of chile but this time it had relatively little. I don't know if this was a one-off occurrence or if the staff made some changes to the ingredients. I've had some of the other food like the tacos and enchiladas so maybe next time I'll see if they've changed as well. I saw other comments about price increases but the prices were the same when I stopped by today. I looked online and their ordering service is actually charging 50% higher prices than if you go to the location. I don't know why that's happening but I'd avoid ordering online. read more

The food here is good, 4 star, but the Prices are outrageous! They have gone up since they opened on Sand Castle off Del Rey ! I was willing to pay the old prices. They are going to lose business once people see the prices! I was happy when they opened, I could run in for vegetables, but the prices are convenience store prices, not restaurant prices! I was going to get some food yesterday morning but their prices have recently gone sky high. More than doubled recently. The whole reason I loved Chavira's was because of the cost but that is gone now. The Sand Castle location is really close so I might still go out of convenience but it will not be very often. I used to get food there once a week because the taco meat by the pound was priced so well. Sadly, that is no more and the food is good but I can't justify spending that much. Some of the plates are priced at an average/moderate price but there is better food for less elsewhere. $10 for a bean and cheese burrito and $15+ for other burritos? That is just crazy. Either they are smoking something really good or just got greedy. I'm very disappointed. read more

I visited the 2nd location this morning at 991 Sandcastle ave, i ordered my pickup through DoorDash at 9:50am 5/6/2025. Now let me say that i am a big supporter of Chavira's and have been for some time at their other location on 70. (Which is a minute or so from my house). I decided i wanted to give their second location a shot today. I placed my order for a breakfast burrito combo for the price of $20.51 with tax. I arrived at the location and went through the drive through at approximately 10:35am. I gave them 45 minutes in between to prep my order. The young girl at the drive through said she had no record of my order or name in her system, i showed my DoorDash pickup information to her and she insisted there was nothing there for me. I verified the address and still she said nothing was there. I pulled into the parking lot to try and cancel my order, i was unable to cancel my order due to the fact that they started prepping it. While in the parking lot i called the store and asked what the next step or solution would be. She put me on hold and asked if i was still in the drive through and that they barely received my order and to come inside to pick it up or go through the drive through again. I went through the drive through again and waited 10 more minutes in the line. I get to the window and she hands me my food and says nothing. She left the DoorDash ticket on my order and it shows my name, and the order was printed at 9:50am. So in actuality i paid $20.51 for a cold food and horrible customer service. The young girl and the staff really dropped the ball on this one and Is making me wonder if i should still choose Chavira's for my go to produce store. read more

I stopped in at the New Chavira's Market on the north side of town out off Del Ray hoping that they would have a few tables for indoor dining. No such luck! The new market is small and features their home made tortillas and a lot of meat. All the usual Mexican carne is found here. This is essentially a carniceria. Most other products can be found at the average Cruces grocery stores. Inside the front door stands a young woman who takes your order and cashes you out. You place your food takeout orders with her and pay there despite a big menu board over the meat counter. The menu board, I might add, has no prices listed. The young lady at the front checkout can tell you the cost of your takeout meals if you ask. Today I ordered the six quesabirria taco meal. The tacos are on the smaller side. Total cost with tax about $14.50. In addition to the tacos the meal contained lime slices, one red and one salsa verde, a mild but really tasty grilled chile pepper, and consome with a plastic spoon. And, lots of napkins. Once you order your meal with the lady up front, she gives you a receipt with a number. They call your number and you pick up your packaged meal at a little window near the meat counter. My wait time was about 8 to 10 minutes. In addition to quesabirria they offer most of the usual Mexican meat, enchiladas, gorditas, and burritos. Bottled drinks are in a large cooler. Regarding the food: the salsa verde and the red salsa were just ok...nothing special. The bulky chile pepper was mild and tasty. I enjoyed it. The consome was among the better broths around town. Not the best but one of the good ones. Rate it a B+. The tacos were on the smaller side. The meat inside the tortillas was really tasty. Dipped in the consome these birria tacos were very good. The tortillas were flavorful and not at all greasy. Rate these tacos an "A" for excellent. There are about seven restaurants around town that serve birria tacos with consome and I have tried all of them. Chavira's birria would rank in the top three for flavor and quality. Too bad they don't offer any dining facilities. This is takeout only. I can't believe they built a new store and didn't leave a small area for dining in. A couple steel picnic tables out front would help??? So, we cannot rate the Chavira's dining experience any higher than FOUR STARS because there is no dining here. Despite the good food I don't know how often I will return as everything is takeout. Kind of inconvenient if you don't live or work nearby. read more
