Birria tacos....excellent
Herp D.

Honestly better than the reviews on Yelp. Got complimentary chips. The salsas were decent. The street tacos were good except for the tripe taco...skip the tripe. The birria tacos were AWESOME! Service was good and the restaurant was clean. Food was decently fast and affordable. Good roadside stop.

Forget all the insipid nonsense you'll see in Google reviews. I'll tell you the real story. Today I checked in at Taqueria Chavez on Lohman Ave. The place is ok for quick, casual dining. Not much more. Their menu is kind of limited to tacos, tortas, and quesadillas. Their specialty appears to be Birria Tacos or Quesabirria when cheese is added. Birria Tacos are cooked up on the grill and have a crispiness to them and they tend to be a bit greasy. But, if done right they are delicious. Today I ordered their Quesabirria Tacos with consome (or consomme???) and an additional taco al pastor to see how that is. The service today was fine in a casual sort of way. They brought out a basket of chips with a salsa verde. The chips tasted ok but were very salty. Rate them a B-. The salsa verde was thick and highly pureed. Flavor-wise it was not very good. I am not a fan. Rate the salsa a big fat "D." I didn't consume much of it. The taco al pastor had a fair amount of meat and it wasn't too dry. The flavor was just ok. Nothing to write home about. The bit of sauce in a tiny plastic cup served along with it was fairly good. The four Quesabirria Tacos came with chopped onion and cilantro on the side along with a tiny cup of some kind of sauce and a bowl of their consome or consomme. I have to tell you folks, these people really know how to prepare the consome the right way. It was "not" oily like so many other restaurants make it and it was full of flavor. Rate it an "A." The Quesabirria Tacos were full of shredded meat and melted cheese. The taco shells were not too oily and the flavor was very good. When dipped in the outstanding consome these were great tasting tacos. Rate them an "A." I must also note, they put a little cup of some kind of sauce on the taco plate. I tasted a tiny bit with the end of my fork and it was nasty. What the hell was that? I re-capped it and tossed it. I would rate the dining experience at Taqueria Chavez around Three and a Half Stars but the Birria and Consome are so good I must rate it Four Stars for the overall dining experience. The Birria Tacos are a FIVE STAR production. Not everything served here is outstanding but most of the food is pretty good. The Birria Tacos and consome are top drawer.

When you're agitated because you're hungry but more furious because your food is straight up disgusting. Ps : if you're special is Al Pastor Tacos... please learn how to make it. All I had were fatty parts of the pork and they were huge chunks. I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs. They do not taste authentic how they use to be. The rice tastes stale and the flavor is odd. I'm pretty disappointed and probably not going to be back.

Taqueria Chavez is our goto taco place. Their tacos are always fresh and full of flavor. My son-in-law discovered the restaurant on his own exploring Las Cruces on a recent visit and ended up eating there every day. I highly recommend the birria tacos (they even have a keto version) as they are my favorite. It's been a challenge taking a picture of them because I haven't had the self control to not instantly dig in but I do have a picture of the tacos al pastor which are also great. We haven't eaten in the restaurant yet, but it's worth noting they have their own robot server that will bring your tacos to you. I look forward to checking it out in person because who doesn't want to eat tacos and pretend they're on the Starship Enterprise!

Portions are very large. So the $11 average price for stuff is "kinda" worth it. But the food is basic. Average even. Chicken enchiladas were pretty much cheese and lots of hot green sauce with several pieces of their taco chicken tossed on top. Rice was nasty for my taste. Reheated and super sticky. Refried beans were just that. Refried beans. Both the red and green sauces had super heat. Shrimp tacos were pricey for frozen little shrimps in a corn tortilla. They did pile on the shrimp. But they were still frozen little shrimps at one point. It was clean and the service was friendly and fast. The little salsa bar was nice. Complete with lime quarters and pico. Communal tables to sit at. Free soda refills. Aqua fresca flavors are very limited. And refills for dine in customers are a couple bucks. It says seafood on the door. But their seafood is mainly shrimp tacos or shrimp cocktail. They were out of ceviche when we went. They do have drive through. We're going back to try different dishes. Want to make sure it's not just average because we want it to be a go to place.

For lunch today, we went to Taqueria Chavez. My wife had the shrimp tacos and I had the shrimp quesadilla. Everything was delicious, especially the shrimp quesadilla. It was loaded with shrimp, cheese, onions, etc. We actually found an empty table available. Service was quick, but not fast food quick.

Shrimp quesadilla tacos, carne asada quesadilla tacos, shrimp tostada, ceviche, agua fresca de limon, horchata. Awesomeness

We asked to sit on the patio, which was nice, although a little chilly with all the patio umbrellas up. They brought out some salsa and a small portion of chips. We were able to flag down a server for more chips, but it seemed like this was a constant issue. The queso tasted like Velveeta, but was better with the salsa mixed in. Definitely not worth the price. My hubby had the Estrella Tacos, which were surprisingly good and reasonably priced! I tried a side of the calabasitas with no idea what to expect and found them quite tasty. Overall, it just felt a bit odd. Service was lackluster, food was hit or miss. Would try again, maybe at a different time of day.

He has beaten stage four cancer three separate times. Needless to say, his career military background and having just retired in October 2025 served him well. He has faced every diagnosis head-on like the true American soldier he is. During one of our quiet conversations, he shared something that clearly weighed on him. He was heartbroken that he never got the chance to take his wife out for their 55th wedding anniversary in December because he was in the hospital. The next day, I asked him a simple question. If you could pick one restaurant within a 100-mile radius, just one, where would you want to go once you had your strength back? Without hesitation, he said La Posta. Over the next few weeks, a lot changed. He was released from the hospital. He slowly began to regain his strength. First the cane went away, then short walks turned into longer ones, and eventually he was even driving himself from LC to EPT for doctor's appointments. When I finally asked if he felt strong enough to go to that meal we had talked about, he lit up. He started telling me stories. How his father used to bring him to La Posta. How it had remained top notch throughout the years. He went into detail about every menu item he loved. But the one thing he really wanted me to understand was the ambiance. You will get it when you are there, he told me. I called to see if they took reservations. We were not even sure they did. A young woman named Priscilla answered the phone. I explained the situation. My uncle was finally strong enough to return to his favorite restaurant, one that held a lifetime of memories, and he had missed celebrating his 55th wedding anniversary. I told her I wanted to surprise them and make the night unforgettable. I even mentioned I was planning to have flowers delivered. Priscilla did not hesitate. She immediately connected me with her manager, Teresa. I asked if we could have a larger table than one meant for three people because my uncle wanted to order everything. Honestly, I just wanted him to eat, to enjoy himself, to feel normal again. Teresa agreed without question. Then something unexpected happened. Teresa explained that Priscilla was a single mom of two who had recently started a floral business on the side and truly wanted to help make this night special. She asked if it would be okay to involve her. Of course, I said yes. I was transferred back to Priscilla and told her to go big. No expense spared. I gave her full creative freedom and an unlimited budget. Unbeknownst to me, Priscilla partnered with a friend who specialized in balloon arrangements. What she created was nothing short of breathtaking. Place cards. Multiple floral centerpieces. An ornate floral display. A large professional sign welcoming my aunt and uncle to the restaurant. She handled everything with grace, professionalism, and kindness, even as our party grew from three people to thirteen. And then the story took a turn. The day before the dinner, my uncle was rushed into emergency surgery. Suddenly, everything was uncertain. Half the family canceled to stay at the hospital. We kept Priscilla updated as events unfolded. Not once did she complain. Not once did she lose her composure. She adapted to every change with pure professionalism and empathy. She even adjusted the floral arrangements when we decided to bring flowers and food to the hospital instead. That is when I learned that the owners of La Posta had been informed of the situation. The male manager on duty, and I regret not remembering his name, passed along a message from them expressing their deepest condolences and gratitude. He also shared that they wished they could have been there to meet my uncle. There really are still good people in this world. After her shift ended at 4 p.m., Priscilla went to pick up her kids and then came back to the restaurant just to meet me. She walked me through everything she had created and explained the work behind it. When I asked how much I owed her, she paused and said she wanted to bless my family and could not accept payment. I was overwhelmed. Her work would have easily cost four to five hundred dollars. I insisted on tipping her at the very least, and she reluctantly agreed. The food that night was incredible. We had a wonderful server, and the food was amazing. We ordered extra meals to go so my cousins could bring my uncle his favorite dishes back to the hospital. It was a small way to lift his spirits during one of the darkest moments our family has faced. My uncle asked me to thank you for the food. And I want to thank everyone at La Posta for the hospitality, the compassion, and the humanity. When my uncle regains his strength and comes home again, we will return with his wife so he can finally give her the 55th wedding anniversary dinner they both deserve.

Our waiter, Chase, quickly came to our table to offer us drinks. Chase was very attentive throughout the entire meal. He brought our food out quickly and checked on us as we ate to ensure we were not lacking anything. Excellent service!! Now for the food... The small bowl of chips didn't have a chance to empty before Chase brought another bowl (without us having to ask). We loved the salsa bar where we were able to select the salsas that we wanted to try. We chose the traditional, jalapeño and tomatillo, pico de galio, and chipotle. We agreed that all of them were delicious. My husband had the fish tacos. The serving size was great!! He would have preferred grilled fish rather than the breaded and fried fish; but all-in-all he said it was good. (For non-fish eaters like myself, the fish smell was quite strong and overpowered the smells of the rest of our meals). My daughter got the Monster build your own burrito with chicken. She loved it and said the grilled chicken was delicious!!! My daughter's boyfriend had the chicken enchiladas Christmas (green and red sauces for those who may not be familiar). He loved it! Like my daughter, he too enjoyed the grilled chicken that came in his enchiladas. I had the cheese enchiladas Christmas with 2 fried eggs and sauce on the side. The sauces were both delicious!!!! Everyone at the table enjoyed tasting the green sauce which had a creamy and cheesy consistency with the perfect amount of green chilies and heat. The red sauce was a traditional New Mexico red enchilada sauce with exactly the right amount of heat. My single complaint about my meal is that I could have counted the number of cheese shred pieces between each tortilla of the enchiladas. All of us liked the refried beans and Spanish rice that came with our meals.
