Chau's Cafe has been on and off my radar these past few years. When I saw that Yelp friend, Lyn L. went there recently and gave them high marks, we decided to give them a try. Be prepared to hunt for the place if you've never been to the shopping center, which is quite close to Route 7. We were here around 4 p.m. on a Saturday. At that time of day, there was one occupied table. Ordering food means going to the counter and giving your order to the person working there, and then paying. They have a menu on the wall, but the woman working there told us to look at the paper menu. Apparently, the menu on the wall is constantly changing. Before coming, we decided to order Mongolian beef, ma po tofu, and two small bowls of hot and sour soup. At first, my husband couldn't find the Mongolian beef on the menu. I took a look and found it is listed under the chef's specials. We gave our order and also got a can of ginger ale from the refrigerated chest. After paying, we chose a four top table for ourselves. The food came out quickly! First, the hot and sour soup came. It was served hot and did have some kick to it. We both enjoyed it. It does have quite a few button mushrooms in it, which I gave to my husband. Just as we were finishing the soup, both our entrees arrived. We both liked the Mongolian beef (which also had an abundance of button mushrooms). The sauce was tasty, and the beef was tender. As for the ma po tofu, we thought it was okay but could have been better. It's a meat-free entree that basically has large pieces of tofu, a lot of thin, spicy sauce, and bits of green onions. We each were given generous portions of white rice. We would consider visiting again in the future, as the service was excellent. As for ambiance, it has a carry-out place feel. Our favorite Chinese takeout doesn't disappoint. The food is always hot. The portions are plentiful. Kung Pao beef is so tender and the veggies are crunchy. Their fried rice is a huge take our container. Online ordering is so easy. I often customize my meals because of my pickiness. The place has a small eat in dining area. It's very clean. This has become my go-to for Chinese food. The staff is incredibly kind from the second you walk through the door. I love that the portions are "just right"--decent sized without being overwhelming like most places. Plus, if you dine in, the food is out in 5-7 minutes. Super fast! Overall this is a solid Chinese restaurant for Loudoun county. I prefer white meat chicken with dishes such as general tso's or sesame chicken. While they couldn't do fried white meat chicken, they were accommodating and used the steamed chicken and put the sauce on it. It was good chicken and the general tso's sauce was tasty. The fried rice only had egg in it, I would've preferred some vegetables too. The wonton soup was good and the dumplings in it were solid. The beef rolls were not my thing. I was expecting more of a fried egg roll but these are really just beef spring rolls. They are definitely packed with a lot of beef. I would come back and try other dishes. read more

Had this delivered for dinner tonight. We have eight here before and it was no good, but we wanted to give it another go. The service wasn't great, the girl I spoke with was very short and did not listen when she was asking me questions in regards to an item that I had selected. Since it was a delivery I don't have many thoughts on ambience, but I'm sure it was OK. The food however, was terrible. The hot and sour soup tasted like day old water and so did the dumpling sauce. This is more of a food pickup place than sit down restaurant. Although there are tables for you to eat there is you like, everything is self service. The thai fried rice is BOMB! Totally recommend!! I went to Chau's yesterday with three friends and it did not disappoint. The lunch menu is a great deal for the price. Each entree comes with soup or a spring roll. My hot and sour soup was delicious! My friends loved their egg drop and wonton soups. One friend and I both got the mushroom chicken, which was so good and definitely recommended if you're a mushroom lover. Our other friends got the sesame chicken and the Hunan beef, which they really liked, and all four of us had leftovers. We will eat here again. read more

Our go-to Chinese restaurant! The staff is always warm and welcoming, and the food never disappoints. The chicken with broccoli is a standout--just ask them to go easy on the garlic, and it's perfect. We also love their boba tea and lo mein. Consistently delicious and great service. read more

Haven't been here since covid started... they switched to a ALL self service but they do have seating do you can eat in... a very extensive menu Our lunch was shrimp egg rolls, spicy beef with dry chili, and veggie lomain.... The egg roll was nice... hubby hates the small packets of condiments and not thrilled with this mustard that's more hot than mustardy ... but what we have do he mixed up his sauce The spicy beef with dried chili was surprisingly fabulous... very tender... lots of different peppers with a nice burn. Lomein was nice with lots of veggies We went back and forth on the eating of 4 or 5.... I went here on a Sunday and I was the only dine in customer at the time. I was craving for this specific food (please refer to my picture, I forgot to ask what it's called ) it came with rice. Although I like Yen's better but this was close. It satisfied my craving. They give a big portion and the pricing was good. Drunken noodles were excellent!! The shrimps were fresh and noodles were cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of spiciness. Highly recommend the drunken noodles. The owner stated they will start serving Xiao Long Bao soon. It will be the first restaurant to offer Xiao Long Bao in the Ashburn area. Looking forward to try some authentic Xiao Long Bao. Ok, so it was open on Christmas and they were very friendly, which I appreciated. Ordered beef brocolli which I wanted spicy. This dish had a ton of beef, a ton. It had 4 pieces of brocolli, not quite what I was looking for and it was totally lacking any spice. Sadly, the main dish was a little disappointing. The vegetable egg roll were barely warm to the touch with mushy insides. Asked for sweet n sour sauce and was guided to packets of sauce none that included sweet n sour. I can always count on delicious hot food, timely delivery when ordering to go, and if you ever need catering the owners never disappoint. The shrimp egg foo yung was tasteless and had virtually no shrimp. We actually couldn't eat it it. The boneless rib chunks were just strips of meats and too tough to enjoy. I'll tolerate a badly cooked steak at a diner, but not at an expensive steakhouse. When this place stacks up against the other Chinese carryout places, Cafe Chau firmly stands as one of the best ones. Food is excellent for a cheap Chinese carryout (about $11-15 per entree). Spring rolls tasted subpar, but they were free for orders over $15 before tax, so I'm not complaining. The entrees, such as the pepper steak and the chicken with black bean sauce, were cooked very well. I must say, very close in quality to PF Chang's at a much lower price point. The dishes were flavorful, and not drowned in gooey sauces that are thickened with corn starch. Surprisingly, they have a few authentic Chinese dishes on the menu, such as shredded pork or chicken with dried bean curd/tofu. Brown rice is available at an extra charge. Ok so for some reason the Chinese restaurants in this area (Loudoun) or NOVA outside of Rockville are pretty terrible. I moved from CA so I'm a bit biased. However, this place is pretty good compared to others. I'd normally give it one star less but the competition is so bad that it gets bumped up. As a vegetarian, I tried the TVP. Oh wow is that awful. Once was enough. I personally use soy curls at home. Staying away from TVP, the other vegetarian options are pretty good and most importantly the whole family enjoys the other options on the menu. We came in around 2pm so it was a quiet time for the kitchen. We ordered a couple of iconic Chinese dishes. However, we left pretty disappointed, and decided not to return in the future. The shouyo ramen we ordered was so unbearably salty that none of us would drink the ramen soup. I get that restaurants and take-out places tend to use more salt than we normally would cook with, but this place cooked ramen almost with enough salt to make the whole thing taste bitter. We mentioned how salty the ramen was, the following entrees still came just as salty. The services were actually very nice. Anyway...people came for the food, if you can't get that right, the service didn't really matter that much. read more
