Did my first ever open mic here earlier this year and have learned so much since then! Just looks like a regular degular dive bar in Covina but a lot of comedy magic happens on Thursday open mic nights at 8 pm. There's nothing quite like this spot as there's a regular circuit of new and seasoned comics trying shit out and rotating hosts each week. Happy hour deals are fantastic and Steve (owner) makes a mean marg! Mango marg with a tajin rim and a regular marg with a salt rim gave me enough liquid courage to do my set tonight. Best dive bar in Covina, in Southern California, and maybe the entire west coast?!!!!! Lmfao pretty much only leaving this review because of miss Katrina C below. The drinks are amazing and cheap, everyday happy hour 6-9pm, and the comedy shows every Sunday are TOP TIER. Melissa Villaseñor, Chris Estrada, Taylor Tomlinson have all headlined here. The open mic show on Thursday is also great if you want to see up and coming comics from the local area and folks all the way from west LA/IE/OC, or also see pros work on their material. Perfect date night if you want to grab a drink and get some laughs. Then stay after to play pool and put on your fav songs on the jukebox. I haven't even mentioned there are often live musical performances on Friday from indie/electronic/psychedelic musicians. Or the karaoke nights on Saturdays and Mondays (so much fun shout out to Dom and Nate and Albert for djing). Or that every bartender treats you like fam. My plus-one-in-life and I were driving in Covina one Friday night, and talking about dirty, sketchy dive bars. The kind with old, white, hardened biker men alone with their beers, with old, torn pool tables, bad lighting, and where anyone who looks to be under the age of 60 or dressed nicely gets stares. "Let's find the next one that looks like that, that we drive past, go in, and order a drink," boyfriend suggested. I was game. I saw a flickering neon "Cocktails" sign and said, "THAT ONE!" I was even more excited by the bouncer's "Cool story babe, now make me a sandwich" T-shirt. But once we were inside, we were completely surprised. This place was lively, hip, well-lit and decorated, and full of people having fun. Signs on the wall advertised upcoming events like stand-up comedy and karaoke nights. There was a jukebox full of good 90s jams, a pool table, and comfy seating all around. The bar became more crowded as the night went on. The bartender, whose name we sadly didn't remember, was one of THE NICEST guys you'll ever meet. Even though we were squares in professional work attire, he stopped to chat with us and welcome us personally, as he did with all of the other patrons. He was just a genuinely cool, friendly guy. We meant to stay for a round, but when we got the $8 bar tab for our vodka sprite and vodka red bull, we decided to stay for 2 more rounds because we were having so much fun. And at those drink prices, we would be losing money by not staying and drinking there! Our friend at the bar had a generously heavy hand, too. This was a really fun, laid back bar with exceptionally friendly staff and people. Even the other patrons and girls I ran into in the bathroom were friendly and chill. It's on the way home from work, so I could see is stopping to get a drink on many future Friday nights when we want to unwind. It's one of those unsuspecting places, the ones you pass by a Brazilian times at night and wonder what that neon sign is all about. The rest of the bars are half a mile away in downtown Covina! So one day I got curious and said, "Enough is enough!", and it was awesome!! It's my go-to bar when friends come to my side of town. Drinks are very budget friendly and they have rotating specials, some of which are very creative with their names. They post it on the little chalkboard next to the fridge stocked with bottles of various beer. I believe they have some beer on tap as well. I'd say they've got a pretty good selection of liquors on their wall. If you sit at the bar, the inside wall is cushioned so you won't be hurting your knees (very thoughtful indeed). In terms of entertainment, they've got it all! There's a modern day jukebox, a billiards table, I think they have Karaoke nights? And they have a bunch of old DVDs playing on the TV, which does NOT match the atmosphere at all, but who's really paying attention? The restrooms are tiny and only 1 stall for women, but you can make some friends while waiting, if ya know what I mean... Just kidding, but from the many times I've been to Chatterbox, the crowd has been very chill. There's a small lot in front that fills up pretty quickly on the weekends, then you'd have to find street parking in the residential area from then on. read more

As far as dive bars go, this place fits the criteria so well. Q: Does it have a pool table? A: Yup, but only one so good luck playing once the night gets darker. Q: Live music? A: Yup, although they also have DJs play tracks live. Q: Bar have good selection? A: Yup. They have a good amount of hard liquor and beers. The drafts are good as well, so if you want to go cheap, you can always go for a draft PBR for $3, or go for the upgrade and get yourself a Shock Top for $4. Although, after four or five beers, you might as well downgrade to PBR since at that point, you're going for the buzz, not the taste. Q: How's the crowd? A: Diverse. Of course, it's a dive bar so you have to expect dive people. Lots of different folks here, but mostly the locals around the area. Some pretty girls out on the weekend, but mostly just a crowd of people looking for a good time. Don't expect highly dressed individuals. Go to a club for that. If you enjoy dive bars, this place will be a good fit. If you're looking for something more like a lounge or club, this place definitely isn't your place. It is small, compact, and loud. Never judge a bar by its aesthetic cover and certainly not this one. The outside does not say much but the inside is pure quality! Chatterbox is a great dive bar and better option than the other bars in downtown covina. The places has a great crowd and lively atmosphere. Chatterbox has everything I look for in a dive bar. It has a couple of beers on draught, a jukebox, a pool table, and a restroom. On draught, they have PBR, Bud Light, and Shock Top. They also have a decent selection of bottled beer. The booth style couches along the back wall and little black tables make this bar feel extra nice and more like a lounge. Although limited in space and seating, this place is cool. The bartenders are nice and very attentive to people wanting to order a drink. The crowd is very diverse depending on the night but it is usually visited by individuals looking to unwind with a drink of two. I really like coming here to enjoy a couple of PBR's, scope out the scene, and listen to some tunes. read more

This Drink hails from the darkness of chatter box made with brown sugar syrup, fresh mint, with angostura bitters. Not bad at all. I would suggest trying it to judge yourself. This place started off fun until the "comedy show" started", then things turned for the worst. To get straight to point the "comedians" go out of there way to interact with the audience but then get insulted when the audience participate. The LAME comedians patronize you with low blows in a derogatory manner asking the customers "audience" not to interact when asked to participate. Go figure If you even think about going to the restroom let a lone turn your chair away from the stage while "the monkey show" is going on, the fat Turkey bouncer will approach you and ask you not interrupt. Very bipolar atmosphere. I'm betting that this place will not last long if they keep this act going. I will never set foot in this LAME "comedy club" ever again. This is the type of place you would see on the Bar Rescue show. My advice to the restaurant's owner is to save your money on the folding chair rentals for your "comedy show" and just serve your customers well drinks. No one gives a fuck about your circus act. People are quick to call this place a dive bar, but what is a dive bar really? What I would consider to be a dive bar most people would not get all dressed up to go to. So what is the Chatterbox? To me, it's the box. A box. A place with friendly and familiar faces. Bartenders that I would gladly hand my debit card to, knowing that I'll have just enough left to make an early morning run to the closest fast food establishment. Yes it can be a sausage fest but what do you expect with such cheap prices. My advice.. Guys..Make a few female friends and take them to the box. My friends and I decided to leave the fate of our Saturday night to fellow Yelpers of Covina. We were in the mood for a local dive bar and Chatterbox came up after a quick search. With a rate of 4/5 stars, we decided to check it out. It's a typical dive bar atmosphere with locals drinking and having a good time. Different genres of music selected to play on the jukebox. Thank goodness it wasn't the typical power 106 playlist on repeat. The bartenders seemed friendly. Drinks are cheap which is a ++++. There's a pool table in the middle of the establishment which made the flow of traffic a little awkward. Several times I stood at the bar and would get nudged by someone's cue stick. I think that's the only negative aspect of the place. Other than that, I can see myself coming back here if I don't feel like going to a typical LA club.
