Now, if you are expecting a theater like setting (i.e. Broadway or NJ PAC) that is not the venue. They have a great stage with audio and lighting with 3 rows of stadium style seating. It's professional, intimate, and super underground and makes me happy that a place like this exists in my community, let alone a few streets away. I'll definitely be checking out a ton more live performances now that I know that this gem is definitely authentic, professional, unique and just straight cool.

None of those seemed to get me through the door until I saw "A Cat in the Hat" was playing and I finally decided to take my little niece and nephew out to see a local play. It's a small space down in the basement of St. Stephen's school. Tickets for adults are $8 and kids $5. Folding metal chairs are arranged for seating. There's a small concession stand selling individual cookies and water at breakeven prices. For the kids they had paper Dr. Seuss hats at $1 each. It felt like I was going to a school play and I loved that feeling. The kids sat still the entire 45 minutes and were completely enchanted. I have to admit, so was I. After the show the Cat and Thing 1 and 2 and the entire cast came out to meet the kids and take photographs with them. Next up in April, "Steel Magnolias", something I would definitely take my Mom to see. After that it's "The Fantasticks" in June followed by "The Addams Family". Best part: you can star in any of these productions! They regularly hold open auditions. Tickets are available online, by phone, or in person a half hour before showtime. I'll share that I absolutely loved the walls honoring black cinema and the opportunity to sit at a cute curated desk & write a letter to your younger self (there's that intentional thoughtfulness)you can leave the sealed letter for someone else to read or take it home!
