Booked this place for a birthday party and had an absolute blast. There was about 10 of us and you can host a private class or "clay date" with at least 6 people. It's $95 per person with 2 options. Either 5 attempts at the wheel or 2 wheel and 1 pinch pot option. What that means is that you have 2/5 attempts to make something on the spinning wheel. They walk you through step by step how to make it. It's enjoyable because everyone works to make their own creation. After, you move to another room to hand build something, really anything. You can think up or imaging. We ended up bringing snacks and drinks with us as well which they had no issues with. Class was about 2.5 hours long and you essentially pick which color you want your items to be and then leave them there to dry out and get fired and glazed. Then someone picks them up 5 weeks later. One of the best studios I have worked in. The studio offers wheel and hand building classes and for members you can work around the clock. The kilns are electric and it is cone 6 firings. I came from using cone 10 gas but I adjusted quite well. The atmosphere is chill, the students and teachers are all supportive of each other. The owner, a native of NY is warm and very experienced. She is wonderful to be around. She just opened up in Montclair if that is closer for some and that space is huge. Mud does walk in kids clay dates, ladies night and couples events. I organized a "Claydate" with a party of 8 people for my birthday with Melanie. We all made one pinch pot and had two tries at the pottery wheel. Our instructor was very helpful and skilled about every step of the process. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable evening with friends, and I would definitely be interested in taking formal classes here too! TIP: Be sure to get some inspiration on Pinterest before coming in! What a great place! I just finished a Cylinder workshop at Madison Mud. (I am currently taking my first 8 week course at Boonton Mud.) The class was for students who had some pottery wheel experience and was suggested to me by my instructor. And the class was great. There were six of us making/throwing all different looking (Short, tall, wide) clay piece on the wheel. This class is to give you more time on the wheel so you can advance your skills and that's exactly what it did. The instructor was wonderful and the space is perfect. This is one of those very special places for anyone who likes to craft. They have beginner classes and more advanced ones. They also have memberships for the really advanced and omg you should what they do! Take a class and find your creative spirit! It was such a fun group activity!! We came here with group of 7 for private event and it was a lot more fun than I expected. I am not arty at all and when my friend invited me to her event I wasn't sure if I would enjoy but I gave it a try anyways and I am so happy I did!!!! We made 3 pieces, one hand made piece and two with wheel. Our host was super fun and she gave a lot of instructions and help so we don't get lost. They also have so many different tool to help you to come up with design so if you are like me, not creative, don't worry they have many different options to choose from. Wheel was a lot harder than it looks but again the host helps you if you mess up so no matter how bad you are, you will have very nice piece at the end of the day. We had so much laugh during the class and this was such a nice activity as a group. When we looked at wheel pieces at the end, each pieces have different personality and so much fun to see who did which pieces. I haven't got our piece back yet but can't wait to see completed one. We came here for a friend's birthday party and it was so much fun!! Our super fun hosts were Jennifer and Gillian and they were lively and entertaining! They gave us all the time we wanted to grab some snacks and wait for more people to arrive before teaching us some pottery techniques. We started with the pinch pots and then we broke up into two groups to work on the pottery wheel. My advice would be to wet the wheel as much as you can to avoid the burn from the friction! But I really can't wait for my finished products. Also, Ghost is my second favorite movie (first is Dirty Dancing) so of course I wanted to try out pottery lol. I was looking for a birthday gift for my friend and found a beautiful vase. There is a lot of pottery that is for sale and I chose an item that Jennifer made. She was able to tell me the story of where she made it and it definitely added character to the present. I'm so happy I got it!! This is definitely a great place to go to if you're looking or something different than doing the paint and sip nights. When we went it was definitely a bit warm in here so I was a little uncomfortable with the temperature. Also, wear clothes/shoes that you won't mind getting dirty! read more

My husband gave me a couples night certificate for Christmas and it was the best gift received! We went on a Saturday night and did sculpting and the wheel. I made a plant pot with a saucer to catch the water for my sculpting project. At the wheel my dish came out looking like a nice ice cream bowl! My husbands didn't come out as well. The staff was unbelievably nice and helpful. Today, we picked up our goods and were impressed we could make something so nice on our first try. We are interested in doing a series of classes once again our schedules calm down. We noticed when picking up our goods that you can also just walk in without an appointment as well. read more

My husband and I are just starting our third eight-week session of the Adult Ceramics class. You know those places that are so special, you don't want to tell other people about it, so you can keep it all to yourself? But on the other hand, you want everyone to know about it, so the business is supported, and you want all those people to feel it is as special as you do? This is one of those places. I used a pottery wheel maybe three or four times in Jr. High School. So, as an adult, it was all very new to me. The instructors, particularly Melanie and Anthony, are wonderful, and the curriculum makes sense, so that you build your skills over time. It has been exciting to see how I've progressed, and I'm sure this will be a life-long hobby. Madison Mud is a place that truly fosters learning, creativity, and fun. read more

I would add that there are beautiful, unique, finished pottery items for sale at a very reasonable price. No mass production here. It's the creative special touch of the artist. I went one evening with a bunch of girlfriends (moms night out) and we had a GREAT time!!! Melanie is an engaging, patient and funny teacher. We each did a pinch pot (I have no skills in this area and participated, but spent more time enjoying the wine, cheese and snacks that were both provided and that we were allowed to bring). We also did two small bowls on the wheels. I cannot believe how well they turned out!!! I'm looking forward to going back - a clay date seems like something my husband will enjoy. This is an awesome, friendly, casual place to learn how to throw pots or hand build pottery. We took a wheel thrown pottery class and they always had a knowledgeable teacher there to assist and demonstrate. I brought my kids (boys ages 5 & 7) one night when I couldn't get a sitter and they loved building with the clay so much that the little one wants his birthday party there and they both want to take classes ASAP. I went to a ladies night here with some friends. I have always wanted to try pottery, so I was very excited to go! Everyone brought their wine, there was food and snacks and we started by learning how to make pinch pots. I never realized how fun and relaxing this could be! I couldn't stop playing with the clay! And then we learned THE WHEEL! So cool, and more difficult than i thought. But so fun. The Host was the best! She was very funny, entertaining and a great teacher.
