Let's start with the setting. Picturesque mountain scenes out every window. Gorgeous stone entrance. Attention to detail in both ambiance & food. We had the prime strip, crab cakes, brussel sprouts, & the charcuterie board. I brought most of it home because the portions were amazing. Everything was fabulous especially after two glasses of chardonnay which I also recommend. Let's not forget our beautiful server, Amelia. She was so much fun, knowledgeable, & the sweetest when we couldn't stop talking to figure out what we wanted. I would hang out with her on a regular basis, for sure. This was our second visit here. Today's weather wasn't conducive to sitting outdoors like we did on our last visit. Indoors was warm & inviting. And we were happy they could accommodate us even without a reservation. Our service was personalized & friendly. We were here for lunch and had salads with grilled chicken. BLUF: very good food and excellent service A group of 7 of us went for early dinner on a Saturday. The place was moderately busy. It appears they stop new diners coming in about an hour before closing time, so be sure to make a reservation or call in to check before doing a walk-in. Our server was excellent. We have some jokesters in our group, and he joked right back at us with a sense of humor. That said, he also listened closely to our orders, recommended alternatives when asked, and was very punctual. The restaurant was very accommodating to menu substitutions and willing to answer questions about ingredients to meet dietary restrictions. The food was excellent. Fried brussels sprouts were amazing. Even the "simple" fried chicken sandwich was very good, with the pimiento dressing adding a nice splash of flavor to a very generously sized chicken filet. Salmon was done to perfection. Zucchini noodles, or Zoodles, were delicious and well made. As a side benefit the next door winery had a band playing and we were able to listen to some great music while eating. We came to find out the band is called Midnight Blues Virginia, so I'll throw in a plug for them here as well, even though they weren't playing at the restaurant itself. It's not cheap place to eat, so I wouldn't go back too often, but for a special occasion definitely. read more

It starts with the professional staff, we were promptly greeted when we arrived seated in the cozy lobby waiting to be seated. At the time of our reservation we were seated at our table. The restaurant has several dining rooms which gives it an intimate vibe. Although the restaurant was very busy, we were provided with bread and drink promptly and our order was taken. The Buffalo Chicken dip was amazing both my wife and I loved. For our main course we both had the Lobster Tail Alfredo which was excellent. Our server recommended Our Dog Blue wine with the meal based on our preference for sweet wine, it was an excellent pairing. Through out the meal we were tended to several times. Visited today for the second time in two weeks. Beautiful views, good (not great) wine and OK food. Service was accommodating to support a group of 10. It appears that the chef had a spinach fetishist, there was spinach in the sweet potato ravioli, spinach in the chimichurri on the rib eye, and spinach mixed in the salmon dish. Everything was average, nothing bad. There are many vineyards in the area, this competes well with the rest and the views are spectacular. read more

We are staying in a home ON the winery property. Restaurant hours were posted until 5 pm. We arrived at 4 pm. Restaurant was visibly fairly empty. Hostess at the stand refused us saying they were no longer taking "walk-ins." Nothing in the restaurant information says a reservation is required. Reservation placed for birthday celebration 3 weeks in advance. We arrive to be told the AC was out in the dining room we would be seated in..and not that it just went out, but a week ago! No one called that day to let us know. We drove an hour and 45 mins to get there. They wanted us to eat in room that was over 85 degrees!! This was our first time at this restaurant and first impressions was pretty horrible based on the prices they want to charge. the furniture in the waiting room looked like it came out of a frat house! Stained and just nasty looking. The smell when you walked in was extremely unpleasant. Musty and molding and like something died. Not what you want when going to a place to eat. Personally this is an ethic issue on the part of the management or owners. The belief that they could get us there and we would stay because of how far out they are..well that didn't happen. They will never get a penny from me. Such a shame for a place that could do so much better. I would give no stars but you have to leave at least one. read more

We were in western Virginia for a weekend getaway and are super thrilled we found this place! Upon walking in, the stone lobby, cozy couches, and wood fire place made the lobby feel like a rustic retreat. Service was almost unbelievably fast. We started with French onion soup and a cheese board, both of which were great. The soup was flavorful and the cheese board was a great balance of cheeses and meats, although we would have loved to know what the selection was/where it was from. For dinner, we ordered the shrimp and grits and the ribeye. The shrimp was cooked perfectly in a rich tomato sauce, and in an elevated take on the classic, the hand milled grits were the star of the show, in a flash fried cake topped with greens and thick smoked bacon. The steak was done to temp really well, and the sides gave way to let the meat shine. We finished up with a tuxedo cake slice! Prices were fair for what we ordered, and the wines were great. Great tasting. They have over 20 varieties, and the tasting includes as many, or as few, as you choose. Pleasant staff helps guide you. They were happy to translate into "beer words" for one friend who is a novice wine drinker, and to get pretty technical with another person in my group. No charge, and no tipping allowed. They are back!! Currently doing a soft opening but expect a full opening soon. If you want to catch one of the limited seatings for the soft opening give the winery a call and ask if they have availability. Ok, so here we go... Will review both lunch and dinner. Lunch. We had the avocado toast for an appetizer. Came out completely different and better than expected. Served as three separate "toasts" all three were very yummy. I'm not usually a fan of smoked salmon but it was great. My fav was the one that had the goat cheese. Looked a lot like feta but tasted like fresh goat cheese. We then shared a Caesar salad. I'm kinda picky on my Caesar dressing as I do not like the oil based as much as the creamy based. Their homemade dressing was super creamy and way good. The salad is actually so large it could be a meal if you were not super hungry. Then came the entree. Shrimp and Grits. My wife could not stop eating the grits. Nice and creamy with just a bit of cheese taste but not over the top like you get at a lot of places. The shrimp were well cooked and not over done or thought. Nice a fresh tasting. They will be milling their own grits which is kinda cool. We paired that with a bottle of the new vintage Archival wine. Over the years I have not been a great fan of the Archival but this vintage is super spot on. I am confident this wine will turn into a library or reserve wine quickly so get it while you can. The service was great and we even had the opportunity to meet the Chef "Smiley". Great guy and an inspiring success story. Oh, about forgot. The price points for the lunch is very affordable for a family but also has options if you desire to splurge. Dinner. Lunch was soo good we had to go back for dinner which was white table cloth service. Nice touch. Again, the price points were spot on with options for a moderate meal as well as an extremely nice Filet Minion, which we both had. However, we started out by sharing a bowl of the French onion soup. Oh my, was that yummy. The style of cheese they used made it super good. Back to the entree. The steak was cooked perfectly. Ok so I like my steak medium-rare and more often than not it will come out medium which is not my thing. But this steak was well prepared. Ok, so remember they were having a soft opening. They forgot to bring us steak knives but we actually didn't need them. Yes, we were able to eat our steaks with a normal table/butter knife without sawing the silly thing. That is a sign of a good piece of meat. The mashed potatoes were extremely creamy cause they were puréed. The asparagus was nicely browned and great as well. Can't comment on desert. We were stuffed!! Both times the service was great. Overall I really like the new restaurant and updated decor. Give it a try but make sure you get reservations. read more

We've been to just the winery before but decided to try out the restaurant to celebrate our engagement. The food was absolutely amazing!!! We both agreed that it was some of the best food we have ever had. Our server, Megan, was very kind and attentive. I would highly recommend sitting outside, we went in mid October and while the weather was beautiful, they did offer blankets. We also brought our 3 month old (which we did accept a blanket for) and they also offered a carseat carrier for her. I would recommend this place 1,000x over. read more

This place has been up and down for years. Closed for a long time and did a limited opening staring 6 months ago. We called at 6 tonight and they had a table open at 7pm. Honestly, our friends reviews from the last 6months had been "just meh", but we were pleasantly surprised! The prices are reasonable (except the Uber limited wine list which had 2 bottles at ~$30 and 2 bottles at ~$250. #wierd). The duck was amazing and the Brussel sprouts were very good. Anyway, the food was good, the service was very good. They are trying hard to be a snobbish, "clink, clink" white table cloth and linen napkin type of place, which if I am honest the area really needs. The ambiance was ok. It would have been great if we weren't seated next to the owner's 23 year old son (we only learned who he was and his age due to his conversation that we were forced to endure) and his older companion with a thick Italian accent. They were so loud we could hardly think, much less have our own conversation. The older gentleman raved about the cheesecake, so we ordered it, but it wasn't that good. Too heavy and dense, not at all special. Just FYI. MickeyG's in town has far better cheesecake. Most of the employees seem to be family (the sommelier and the lady serving port both introduced themselves as Morrisettes) , which is ok, but maybe they shouldn't "hold court" at a table during dinner. Overall, we would go again for the duck breast and recommend that you try it too. read more

Pluses first. The view out the dining room windows and off the terrace is spectacular. We weren't dining outside in November, but it doesn't take much imagination to see al fresco dining would be great in the Spring and the Fall. We were seated by a cozy fire, which was good because the restaurant was chilly inside that day. The staff is very attentive without being a hovering presence. Now the not-so-favorable. I can see how a winery would be under some psychic pressure to have a cutting-edge Continental menu. But please, in Floyd, VA? How about some cutting-edge and some more familiar dishes? Lunch here is expensive and it's a shame a boring person like me can't find something to eat. I settled for the steak sandwich. Ideally, a sandwich is able to be held in your hands and does not require a mouth that opens like channel lock pliers to take a bite. The sandwich I ordered was not ideal. It had crusty bread that was so tough and so thick that the meat squirted out the other end when you tried to rip even the smallest piece off. The sandwich would have been better served with thinner bread that doesn't require the jaws of a wolf to bite. I also could have used a sauce or something to relieve the dryness of the bread. My wife ordered the Lamb Bolognese, a strange combination right there, and didn't care for the taste. For dessert, we shared the Malt Chocolate Tart, which also had too much going on. The tart itself was excellent, but it had a bunch of other stuff with it that made the dish overall too sweet. My advice is to give middle Americans like me a choice or two on the lunch menu. read more

First time here during the off season and it is wonderful. Good views, very good wine, and knowledgeable, friendly staff. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits with the suggested pairing Old Dog Blue. The dish was THE best shrimp & grits I've ever had, and I've been to the south, ie Savannah GA, many times. It's in a cream sauce with a small drizzle of seasoned olive oil, a nice touch. And the Shrimp was grilled and not over cooked, a nice smoke flavor. Ham was perfect, not the cubed kind finally. I will make the drive for this experience again. I'm highly satisfied. *tried their bleu goat cheese, and I love it, it's so delicious. The texture, flavor and presentation. I normally don't like bleu cheese. I highly recommend! read more

Chateau Morrisette is quite a unique and incredible experience. Everything from the charming formal dining area, to the beautiful view over looking the valley, to the amazing selection of wines. It will blow you away. However I was most blown away by their Southern approach to Gourmet food. I was absolutely stunned by the Shrimp and Grits I ordered. It was gritts with smoked gouda formed into a cornbread type thing covered in this thousand island like sauce with shrimps all around it. The whole thing was sprinkled with a mix of diced spicy sausage and diced green orange and red bell peppers. It was absolutely heavenly! I also had a French onion soup that was quite delicious and my aunt ordered a steak with syrup glazed bacon on top...... SO... DAMN... GOOD! It also came with a side of cabbage that was sweet and crispy. I always say one sign of a good restaurant is that they make the vegetables taste good, and that Chateu Morrisette did. Not only did they have the best grits I had ever had but also the best potato wedges, salted and lightly fried to perfection these were DELICIOUS. My Aunt also ordered a bread pudding which was was the perfect combination of evil and sweet. This is a great place to go if you attend Virginia Tech and wanna take a date out for a country drive and a nice meal. I love this place.....I do. I love the location on the Blue Ridge. I love the view from the outdoor patio. I love their Viognier. In the past I have had some memorable meals here. Sadly...today was NOT one of those times. We started with the Onion soup. It had a glaze of oil which is never a good sign. The broth was like sipping a flavorless salt lick. The onions were NOT caramelized...which anyone who cooks k ows is an essential for onion soup because it adds depth. Nope....not this soup. I then had the French Dip while my mom got the Trout Almandine. The roast beef was chewy...obviously not fresh very very frozen for a long time. The au jus was again...jus a la salt lick. The fries were so over salted that you felt salt...not potato. The trout was a very nice filet....buried in a greasy flavorless sauce. The potato puree also had SOOO much salt that they were inedible. We were obviously still hungry since we couldn't eat our meal and ordered dessert. The ONLY bright spot of the meal. The glazed ginger cake is lively and their Homestead ice cream was very nice. I'm hopeful this was just a bad day for the chef because this really is one of my favorite places. It will take a couple of days for my body to recover from this salt....Im glad I don't have any upcoming blood tests!!! read more

First off...my wife and I have eaten here many times, as we have a vacation property near Floyd. The food has always been good. Service, however.....not so much. I don't know what's going on there, but each visit is worse than the last. We stopped in today for lunch and this is our last time. We were greeted by indifferent hosts, that announced that since we didn't have a reservation we would have to wait 45 minutes. I would have understood except the place was half empty. There were 6 different 2-top tables within view, and once I peeked in the dining room, there were even more empty tables. Ooooookay....we'll just have a glass of wine while we wait...nope. We were told by our host and hostess that that there was no one to pour wine. At a winery. We watched other couples come and leave once being told about the wait. I'm not sure what's happened, but apparently the owner has a staffing problem of some sort. Either way, we won't be back. Whitebarrel winery in Riner is much more welcoming, even if they dont have the snooty restaurant. And if wineries are your thing, any of the multitudes in the Yadkin Valley of NC are better. read more

The patriarch of the group expressed that that wasn't acceptable. Total wait time - 30 minutes past our reservation time. Service off to a slow start. We not given wine menus until ordering beverages. No hard liquor available, small selection of beer, and of course wine. While water was provided immediately, it took about 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive. Things picked up. Appetizers came quickly and were very plentiful.and tasty. Our party was sharing bites across the table. Mom had a pretty difficult time ordering, but it's to be expected. She's following a dietary autoimmune protocol and it can be hard for her to eat out. They did prepare her some plain grilled asparagus but the chef declined to substitute a celery root puree that was on the tasting menu and she was provided a fresh fruit plate. She was happy over all that they had been as accommodating as they had been. Our meals were very tasty. Mine was not as warm as I would have liked, but it's expected when you have a large party. Desserts were good. Overall a good experience. We did feel a bit rushed at the end. I know the dining room had to prepare for Mothers Day, but the flurry of cleaning activity made us feel like we had over stayed our welcome. Sunset views were amazing. Elegant Sunday brunch with a spectacular mountain view. The setting is beautiful, located just past Rocky Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We arrived at Chateau Morrisette for our mid-day reservation on a clear, warm, summer Sunday. We were seated straight away at a table next to a floor to ceiling window overlooking a series of mountain ranges stretching off into the distance. Hub and I dined with our friend, a local Floyd, VA resident. Our brunch entrees were prepared with care, beautifully presented and, most importantly, delicious. I started with a mixed greens salad tossed with oil and apple cider vinegar. It was fresh and tasty. I then had the small plates selection of bacon-wrapped quail on a bed of green beans with rhubarb mostada. It was fabulously tasty. Hub had the steak and eggs paired with the winery's Cabernet Sauvignon and raved about both. Our friend had a fried egg sandwich on a flaky croissant--she spent a good amount of time expressing her delight with this choice. We lingered a leisurely ninety-plus minutes at the restaurant, wrapping up with coffee, tea, and good conversation in a lovely, comfortable setting. Post-meal, we made our way over to the winery courtyard where a blues band was playing as part of CM's Sunday afternoon free concert series. In all we had a delightful Sunday afternoon at Chateau Morrisette. Will definitely return. read more

I recently went to Chateau Morrisette for dinner with my boyfriend a month ago and we are STILL talking about how delicious our meal was. I would more than recommend their shrimp and grits, which is my usual favorite, however anything on their menu is a safe bet. My boyfriend started with a poached pear and walnut salad. Neither of us wanted to stop eating it. For dessert I had a pumpkin pie crisp. It was light and fluffy, like a cheesecake, with a crunchy pecan crust. My boyfriend had baked alaska, a delightful surprise addition to their dessert menu. Both were good enough to eat despite the fact that we had already stuffed ourselves on our entrees. The atmosphere at Chateau Morrisette is also as good as it gets. They have a great wine bar where you can enjoy their own wines while you wait. I recommend Our Dog Blue and Red Mountain Laurel. There are also tours and wine tastings available. The restaurant itself has a nice and cozy atmosphere with an old world charm and a wood burning fireplace for those chilly winter nights. A few tips if you plan on visiting....1) Make reservations at least a day in advance. 2) Be prepared to spend a little more (you'll definitely get your moneys worth). 3) Do NOT rely on your GPS to get you there. They have directions from most locations in the SW VA area available on their website. read more

Atmosphere: Gorgeous views, but I could not understand their seating procedures. We had a reservation and walked by several tables in front of the windows to see the beautiful views. However, we were sat in the corner with my back against the wall and no access to the scenery and my husband's view was very limited. There was a table next to us that remained open for our entire meal right in front of the windows. Service: Our table was right above a vent and when we asked if we could move, we were given a menu to put on top of the vent to block the air. The girl we spoke to said that she would first need to check with the hostess before returning with the menu. Strange considering there were several other tables we could have been moved to, which also would have had better views. Not wanting to be difficult, we were just a bit chilled because clearly they did not want to move us. Also when our appetizers came out, the server told us she needed help putting them on the table. Again a bit odd, as there was plenty of space on the table where she was standing. Maybe the egg rolls were too heavy? Food and wine: they were out of the two wines we wanted to try so we opted for one of the blends. It was very light and the bottle prices were very reasonable, but wish we could have tried something with more body. We ordered the duck confit egg rolls, which didn't have much duck flavor, but had a crispy shell. The ham and crawfish fritters lacked crawfish and were a bit doughy for my liking, but my husband enjoyed them. The entrees were much more successful than the appetizers. I had the petite stuffed tenderloin and the portion was VERY generous. It came with a side of Rosemary macaroni and cheese which was delicious. My husband had the filet and it was also very tasty, but more medium well than medium rare as he had ordered. The flavor was very good and the onion straws on top were fantastic. My husband and I were staying in the area, celebrating his sixtieth birthday, and decided that we would have his birthday dinner at Chateau Morrisette. I called and made reservations earlier in the day of October 30, 2015, and requested a table by the window, as I knew what an incredible view they had. We arrived on time with ten or so minutes to spare, and they had our names down, and preceded to take us to a table for two in the center of the room completely away from any window. I told the host that I had called earlier that day and specifically requested a table by the window, and his response was, "This is the best we can do." My husband, being a very outspoken man said, "Well pal, you are going to have to do better than this, because I am not sitting here with my chair half on the rug, half on the floor, rocking back and forth all night!" The host then obliged, and then sat us near the window. When we arrived, there were four tables right in front of the window completely empty, so I can't quite understand why this was an issue, especially when I called earlier that day and the gentleman that answered the phone stated that it would not be a problem.
