    Beer selection in the fridge
    Jason R.

Great little wine bar in downtown Columbia, IL. I'm not a wine expert by any means. However, my good friend Brian Donovan was a sommelier for several years at a world famous French cuisine restaurant in Paris (Illinois; not Texas). He says that Chateau La Vin has the widest selection of affordable and hard to find wines in the Midwest. Having an unsophisticated palate, I usually get one of their house wines. They are only five bucks and I have yet to get one that wasn't excellent! For being a wine bar, they always have a good selection of bourbons on hand; Woodford Reserve, Old Rip Van Winkle, Elmer T Lee (single barrel) just to name a few. They only have one beer on tap and it's always Heineken. It's so fresh, if you closed your eyes, you'd swear you were skipping through fields of tulips in the Netherlands. Finally, while Chateau La Vin does not have a kitchen, they do allow you to bring food from other establishments. With Joe Boccardi's located right next door, it's a great setup!

Great wine selection, very friendly and knowledgeable staff! Perfect atmosphere with live music sometimes! The outdoor section is awesome in the summer!! Try the Klinker Brick wines, all delicious, Cabernet Sauvignon was my favorite! They have a good beer and spirits selection to for the non-wine fans, try the Stumpy's peach vodka!

I met the owner, Bob, and he is so intelligent about the wine he serves and shares this knowledge in a passionate manner.

It's all wooden signs, smells like cinnamon, and every other shop sells soap, socks, or something shaped like a pumpkin. I treat the whole place like one big porch-swing of a town with snacks. Le Chance Winery for dinner when I can. That's my go-to pit stop when I'm done pretending I might buy a decorative birdhouse. Tonight's a girl dinner! A chaotic masterpiece: shrimp salad (shrimp = protein = health), zucchini fries (green = health again), French fries (balance), and a pile of cheese because I'm not a quitter.

I'll begin with the bad: the cheese board for $17 was a huge let down. You may be able to tell from the picture that the sliced cheese was hard on the edges like it was old or hadn't been properly stored. I was shocked they'd serve serve old cheese like that when they must have noticed the hard edges while plating..on the disposable plastic plate. This felt more like something someone threw together for a work potluck than something served at a winery. My fried also ordered fried pickle chips & I had one and stopped there. The fried breading was overwhelming salty. You know you're in for a salty dish with pickles anyway, but this was next level. It made me glad we didn't order anything else from the fryer. On to the good - I actually loved the glass of dry rosé I had. I was skeptical since I haven't had a lot of Missouri wines that I've been impressed with, but this is a keeper. My two friends and I all ordered sandwiches with fries or chips and all enjoyed them and felt the serving sizes were generous. The only negative comment about the sandwiches we all shared were that they were all heavy on the sauce. My advice would be to ask for sauce/dressing on the side. We all had enough to take home leftovers. Our server was very busy but attentive considering the number of tables she was working. The inside was cute and cozy and you definitely feel the history of the building. Overall, I would come back here for a glass of rosé and a sandwich- skip the apps!

Also got a tour of the venue and I am already thinking of hosting a future Galentines day or lunch gathering in the spring time. Reasonable food selection options including for vegetarians. Appreciate the venue allowed us to bring our own cake without restrictions in place. Only concern is parking which worked out for all but maybe a sign on the venue instructing how guests can park so guests are not concerned about towing / ticketing. Until next time.

A TON of wineries participated in the event, which was neat. I'm not a huge wine person. I couldn't tell you the difference between pinot grigio and chardonnay. I don't know how to pair wines with particular foods. All I know is that I like sweet wines! Every vendor that I spoke with had representatives working who seemed to be very knowledgeable about wines, which was a plus. I tried lots of tasty wines! The entry fee isn't too bad; $25 a person, which gives you 10 tickets for 10 tastings of wine (additional tickets can be purchased for $5 per 10). This year they also had a Stella Artois beer seminar (free!) which was very interesting and informative. I have so much more respect now for (good) beer! If you're not into wine, they also had booths with food from various local restaurants, as well as live music. Super cool event! Can't wait to attend again next year!
