Two stars is being kind, I do not recommend you order steaks or prime rib at the Chart House. Even the waitress knew there was a problem with the skill levels of the cook when she requested that I cut the steak in half when it arrived at the table. After checking the steak thoroughly, I found it was raw not medium rare, there is a difference, believe it or not. I returned the food to the kitchen for additional cooking time, instead they dipped it in boiling meat juice, which makes the steak tougher. My wife ordered the seafood linguine entree, mistake number two, over seasoned with ginger and over done shrimp, very disappointing! The only reason we're giving those two stars is because our server was very pleasant and attentive. We had reservations, which should have streamlined the seating process, I found our Hostess to be very rude and condescending. This is awesome place to eat. The prime rib just melts, before eating. The staff is very curtious and prompt. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a five star dinner. Location is not far from main drag. Scenery is of zypher cover, southern part of lake tahoe; very nice! Dessert was unbelievable! My wife was very impressed too. our hotel manager told us that the view here was great, so we checked it out. we didn't have reservations and it took about 30 minutes for us to get a table - we sat at the bar, which was pretty nice. you can order appetizers there. we sat in a booth which was nice - the sun had just set and we could see the lake just past the trees, and it was great. the food is pricey, but i thought it was tasty enough. the crab mushroom appetizer was good. i got the mixed grill entree which was good. our waiter was a bit creepy and there were some characters in the restaurant, but that just adds to the fun. read more

In search for a fabulous steak, we wound up at the Chart House. Unfortunately I left extremely disappointed. we started off with some fried asparagus, which were mediocre. The breading on the outside had good flavor, but the asparagus on the inside were extremely stringy. I expected this place would would know how to correctly cook the asparagus. After ordering the asparagus, we didn't see our waitress for quite some time. We were anxious to our entrees. I chose to order the prime rib expecting it to be wonderful, as I've really never had a bad piece anywhere. After a long wait my meal finally showed up, and needless to say it was not worth the wait. The only place my prime rib had any flavor was around the edges, which is expected. The rest of the cut was tasteless, and even more to my disappointment there was no juice whatsoever in the meat! Being as I ordered my cut cooked medium I was expecting it to be tender and filled with juice. So I ate around the edges of the meat and left the middle, moving on to the masked potatoes. I can't complain about the flavor of them, but they did seem as if they had been sitting under a heat lamp or on the line for too long. I did like how the mashed potatoes were chunky though. I can't remember what veggies came with the plate, so I guess they didn't "wow" me. After dinner we were full, but not satisfied. So we skipped dessert and paid a hefty tag that was not really worth it. Im always willing to pay for a great dinner that is worth it, but this one did not impress. Sad to say I've had better prime rib for far cheaper at the casinos. read more

A steak seems in order so after looking at reviews online, we chose the Chart House, one of Tilman Fertitta's joints. The reviews claim 'best view" of Lake Tahoe. Not even close, maybe 30-40 years ago when the place was new. Great view if the trees out front and a sliver view of the lake. Dinner reservations were at 630 and we arrive around 615. As we walk through the front door and from about 20 feet away the young female hostess yells to us (no kidding) Hi guys, do you have a reservation? Ah let us get in the door and greet us properly. Another young female who was very pleasant seats us at our window table with I guess a view of the lake, no wait the trees. Another very nice young female, Amber(?) quickly greets us and takes our drink order. I think to myself this is going to be a nice relaxing meal. Oops spoke too soon. The couple sitting behind are unhappy with their dining experience and we hear about it the entire meal. Not 100% sure of the issue but the man, who we unbelievably see a short time later at Harvey's still bitching, is not happy with their server and has his wife go to the bar and get them two glasses of white wine. No joke. Amber and a new server (middle aged woman) Ali returns with Ali setting down our drinks, doesn't introduce herself and begins asking us about ordering appetizers. I'm sorry who are you as I thought Amber was our server? Nonetheless, Ali really pushes the appetizers, salad, soup, you get the picture. Since we had a late lunch we didn't order our usual appetizers. We order our entrees; D a shrimp linguine and me the 14 oz Prime Rib. Ali again asks us if we want salad, side dishes, topping for our dinners, and wants to know if we want to pre-order their signature Lava Cake that takes 30 minutes to bake. I get it, bigger the bill the bigger the tip in theory. I get there is pressure from management to sell and turn tables quickly but have some tack, this isn't a burger joint. I cave and add scallops to my dinner. I ask how many suggesting 2 or 3. Ali tells me it depends as they go by weight. Okay fair enough, I didn't ask and she didn't offer what the addition would cost. Amber stands watching attentively, is she in training? She appeared to know what she was doing, hmmmm. The table to the other side of us is talking abound the recent teen death due to overdosing on caffeine and the man in typical Californian mentality talks about how the manufacture should be sued instead of people taking responsibility for their actions. They talked about some other conspiracies and discussed getting a DJ for an upcoming party they are hosting. All while letting "mum" pick up the check. Dinner came out fairly quickly as Ali goes to serve mine and the other staff member goes with D's entree to the crabby guys table before being reigned back in by Ali. Both meals were great and were tasty. We each barely had our first bites in our mouth and a skinny guy in a suit appears, stands between us and the window and asks us how our first bites are. He too needs a lesson in etiquette by first introducing himself and second don't ask someone a question when you observe them just place food in their mouth unless you really don't want to hear their answer. D & I begin to look at each other and we wonder, is it just us, are we getting older and higher end restaurants just don't have any class anymore? Ali walks to the table behind me to give them their leftovers/check and as she does this looks over at her shoulder to me and asks me if I wanted another drink with my dinner. Really? Again, finish what you are doing with that customer and give the your undivided attention, that is part of what they are paying for, the service and the ambiance of a supposedly nice restaurant. I say yes and D asks about wine. Well Ali can't answer because she is dealing with the other table so Amber comes by and discusses wine. D asks her about a wine on their wine list and Amber wasn't familiar with it and offers D a taste, good recovery. Ali then stops by to offer an apology for asking us about drinks when she was tending to the other table. It felt like a joke because as she said it she abruptly turned to a different table behind us and starting talking talking to them. Check, Amber can finish up with us. Note, it is not like the place is slammed but it did have a dinner crowd. Ali approaches our table at the window the woman from the Californians table steps over and starts having a conversation with Ali. I have an idea, quit blocking our view and take your conversation to your table. We finish eating and ol' Ali comes by to give us another backhanded offer. Since you didn't opt for the Lava Cake would you like some other dessert? Before D and I can decide she goes right into her Landry's member card speed. Do you have a card? If not we can sign you up for one and you and you get 25 for your birthday and 25 for every 250 spent. Cheesy at best. No honey more............. read more

Only complaint is wine list. The food and service was great; I had the prime rib and my wife had king salmon. We also had coconut shrimp appetizer and side of creamed spinach. A bit pricey but the service and quality was great. Before going I checked the wine list on their website and was appalled by the prices for wines you can get at grocery store or wine shop for $10-15. The most glaring example was the "A by Acacia Pinot Noir" (definitely a bottom end Pinot Noir) which you can get at Total Wine for $10 and it was on the wine list for $70. Really?! A 7x mark-up for a bottom shelf Pinot Noir?! Bring your own wine and pay the $20 corkage (which is actually steep in my book, should cost $10). Granted I am a wino so I know the prices for most of the wines they have on their list at least in the Pinot Noir category. Check Total Wine, Bevmo (there is one in near the Y in South Tahoe) or Safeway (also in South Tahoe) for their prices compared to their wine list which you can find on the Chart House website. read more

EXCELLENT food. The whole dining experience was great. When you pay that much money, you want quality food and excellent service. We got both. Everyone loved what they ordered. My husband had the filet mignon with bleu cheese. It was cooked perfectly and was a good size. My son had the filet medallions and lobster tail. He ate every bit. Two of us ordered the pan seared scallops with orzo. My only complaint was the small amount of orzo. They must have been running low as I only got about 1 tablespoon of orzo under each scallop (4). Last time I was there, my plate was filled and this time I could see the white plate. For the price, they should not skimp on the orzo. The meal was so YUMMY and we ate every bit. We ordered a dessert to share (triple cobbler). It was delicious and everyone in our party loved it. We all went away with a great experience. The only reason I did not rate it 5 stars was for the small portion sizes of orzo for that high price. BTW, the view cannot be captured in a picture. It is INCREDIBLE and will have to be a memory. read more

(April 2012) Our last night in So.Lake Tahoe..we are on our honeymoon..and we heard this place was a must. We were seated by the window, a beautiful view (make reservations!) Our waitress was friendly, Danielle was her name I believe. We ordered the crab, avocado, and mango appetizer, it was very good, and hats off to the chef for seasoning it perfectly! I ordered a Mai Tai, which wasn't made well, but they gladly exchanged it for a mojito that was wonderful. I then had a soup sampler. It's all 3 soups they make. Lobster Bisque, Clam Chowder, and Gazpacho. All 3 are soooo good! Next our entree arrived, I had the Mixed Grill..pure perfection! Salmon, crab, shrimp, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. A must try!! Everything was cooked perfectly! The side of grilled mushrooms we ordered was great too. Lastly, we had a cup of coffee and our decadent lava cake! Simply fabulous! We left full and very pleased. Expected a more from a Chart House restaurant particularly given the price. We had the filet, medallions and shrimp scampi all of which were just OK and a little lacking in flavor. The highlights were the sides of mashed potatoes and mushrooms and the ginger margarita was excellent. Even the Cesar Salad left a better impression than the main courses. Stay away from the heirloom tomatoes side as it's just a salad with diced heirloom tomatoes in it (strange).. The physical layout of the restaurant takes the best possible advantage of the view, which is fantastic. The service was good until it go closer to closing time at which time we were made to feel very unwanted. Just an OK experience with a big price tag. I don't recall other Chart House locations being this disappointing. read more

We arrived a little early, gave our name and waited to be seated! (Got a message from Open Table that we were no-shows-!!!!). We had a very inattentive server. The food was definitely disappointing. My daughters and I stopped for dinner last Thursday after an afternoon of horseback riding on the mountain in Tahoe. Needless to say we were hungry. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection even though I ordered it well done. It melted in my mouth. The garlic mashed potatoes were tasty and the bread was served warm. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. My daughter order the salmon of which we all had a bite and it was flavorful and beautifully presented. My other daughter ordered the New York steak and it was delicious and beyond her expectations. The clam chowder was beyond anything. It was the best we had ever eaten. We were fighting over the last bite. The lava cake we were too full for but managed to devour it because it was so good. read more

This was recommended but we were sincerely underwhelmed. The first cocktail I ordered was bland and the second too sweet. We had the lobster bisque which was sharp and almost too salty. The pumpkin seed shrimp were just ok. I ordered a bottle of wine to go with our mains but we had barely finished the last bite of our starters when they brought our mains. We weren't even half way through our first cocktail and our wine hadn't been served yet. We like to have a nice long dinner but the mains were brought before they even cleared our starter plates. We then tried to take our time with the mains but a little while later the server asked if we were done and when we said no he said (regarding the chocolate lava cake we had ordered) that the lava cake would soon be a puck... Intimating we were taking too long. The mains were bland as well and the presentation left so much to be desired. (My husbands sweet potato mash was a pile that sadly looked like excrement) The chocolate lava cake was good but as they obviously fired it too early it wasn't lava in the middle. It was overpriced for the bland disappointing flavors. read more

The food was great. I had the ahi tuna with the avocado pico and my wife had the spicy ahi, both dishes were tastee i couldnt pick a favorite. The shrimp, mango, and crab appetizer was ok it tasted like ceviche that needed some type of hot sauce to make it better. The lobster bisque was one of the best i have tried, i highly recommend that soup. Our waiter was a tall white heavy set gentleman with short hair to which i cant remember his name but he was awesome had great insight to the menu which helped with our decision, had great manners came often enough to ensure we had whatever we needed and he put our wine to chill so we could enjoy with our dinner later. read more

Perfect place for a Romantic dinner, a family dinner, just about anything would fit well here. The vibe of the restaurant is warm and inviting. We had a special dinner on Christmas Eve and it had snowed prior to us arriving. Can you believe that we received a call from the restaurant with a traffic report? We were warned about two accidents and assured that our table will be waiting if we were caught in traffic. So on to the meal. Everyone in our party of 13 meal was amazing. I had the coconut shrimp with was light and airy the serving was huge and I loved being able to share this amazing dish with others. We had the lava cake for dessert. Oh my gosh this was yummy. It was warm and gooey it was just perfect. The service was impeccable. I must admit some in my party are persnickety and I at times want to hide under the table. The wait staff were patient and answered all questions and requests. It was Christmas Eve and I am sure the staff wanted to be elsewhere but you would not have known. The staff made us all feel at home and this made the night more special. read more

The food was excellent!! I had a reservation and a couple hours before was able to change it to a later time, running late and still had our table ready for us. Service was good up until closing time at the restaurant (we had a late dinner) ~ the lights in the restaurant shut down (timer?), luckily, we just finished our meals - but still had to eat dessert using only the candlelight. Even when it was time to pay our bill we literally had to ask for a flashlight to look at our bill. We were making comments to the staff and the lights never went back on, nor did they apologize for the inconvenience! Our server didn't even apologize or explain the reason for the lights shutting off until we were ready to leave. There was another couple still eating their dinner in the dark, I think they ended up leaving ~ no one even bothered to apologize or explain to them either. So, all in all, 5 stars on food - 3 on service. read more

Our server Whitney was very helpful and when asked had a spot on recommendation. And we had our toddler with us who was not enthused about sitting still at a fine restaurant & they never made us feel uncomfortable & even tried to help her in many ways. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. We invited friends for a weekend get away and dinner at the chart house. My husband and I had been before and loved it. We called for reservations and arrived on time, they were running behind at that point. We were seated downstairs and basically forgotten about. The downstairs dining which we now lovingly refer to as the basement seems to be an overflow although most of the tables were empty. The service was slow and inconsistent and our waitress scarce. We asked if they worked both levels she said no. Hmm where was she? Our glasses of wine and water often sat empty. The food was good although my mashed potatoes had large uncooked pieces (not lumps people I can deal with lumps) finally fed up and ready to pass on dessert that our waitress said had to be ordered 30 minutes in advance, I asked to speak to the manager. He appeared about 5 minutes later, we told him about our night and he looked like a deer in headlights. Much to his credit he did reduce our bill. We would've paid full price for excellent service which you fully expect for establishments of this caliber. Only the best of the best should be slinging this food. read more

The sliders are served on the equivalent to a fast food bun and the artichoke spinach dip was basically their creamed spinach with some tomatoes on top I didn't taste any artichoke. The coctails are too sweet and the prices for everything are waaayyy too high, dinner for 2 $130 . I'm sure there have got to be better places for a better value. But if you want a fancy night out and don't care about over spending then this is your place. We sat at the bar... the bartender forgot about us a few times but otherwise was nice. read more

Me and my fiancé went here in celebration of my dr.'s saying I'm kickin cancers tushy, and not only does every seat in the house have an amazing and beautiful view, but we got fast, friendly service. We got the calamari, fish tacos, and duck wontons and just the calamari alone I could have eaten all night long. Then we got the halibut and prime rib. Both were delicious! If this restaurant were located anywhere else, it would go broke. The spectacular view of Lake Tahoe is 80% of the Chart House's charm and appeal. The food is "so-so" at best -- I do not believe that any of it is fresh -- all prepackaged and/or frozen. Everything on the menu looks and sounds delicious, but again... The salad bar used to be one of the main reasons to go there for dinner but that has really gone downhill, too. Everything seems rehydrated or chemically treated for appearance and color. (Check out the broccoli and capers to mention a few!) The staff, from the hostess stand in front (true idiots) to the waiters is lacking. The waiters are restaurant corporation robots -- you can hear them reciting the well-memorized menu and daily specials verbatim at every table within earshot. Then they push you to purchase the Landry's, Inc. membership card and get mad when you decline. This has happened to me several times! The Chart House is a corporate chain restaurant and one should not expect anything more than that. read more

After going to the Chart House Lake Tahoe for the last 12 years on our anniversary, this was our last. The quality of the food, service and attention to hospitality details has declined steadily. I can only attribute this to the high cost of living in the Tahoe area. Lower wage employees such as bus personnel, servers, and prep staff can't make it on those wages. Hence, the additional work is placed on current employees. Everything has suffered. The food is mediocre at best. We recognize boxed food. Bar personnel don't know the difference between 'straight up' and 'over' drinks. There is no reason to wait 20 minutes for water at a table because the waitress has her hands full with all the other patrons. The Chart House was once the pride of the fleet at Lake Tahoe. Now it is just a leaky row boat circling the drain. We will spend $200 for an evening out elsewhere. We would recommend others do too. read more

My husband and I had an amazing night out. The place was packed, we felt we may have caught their busiest night, but our waitress Andrea made us feel cared for that we felt as if we were the only people at the restaurant. I was looking for an upscale dinner in Tahoe without being stuck in a casino and this was the perfect place. I didn't know how much it would cost going into it but it wasn't too bad for what you get. The average entree seemed to run about $35 with a lower end bottle of wine at $42. I had the macadamia crusted mahi and it was EXCELLENT. So was the calamari! The dipping sauce was tangy and slightly spicy. Perfect! For dessert we had the Mud Pie and that was great too! read more

Great Happy Hour from 4:30 - 6:30. $3.25 for Blue Moon draft beer. $4 for nice selection of glasses of wines. Appetizers for $4 - $6. You have to try the ahi nachos - actually on won tons and delicious. We also liked the fish tacos and bruschetta. We may have to go back before our week is up here.
