Walked in here on a Sunday evening around 5 after visiting the aquarium. We were told that we would have to wait until 8:45 for a table. Although we didn't have reservations that length of time just sounds ridiculous for a party of 2. The staff said dismissively said that we could sit at the bar (same menu) so we wandered awkwardly in to take a look but all the seats were taken anyways. If you go, make reservations! read more

Take your money elsewhere. I came here expecting a decent night out but boy was I wrong. We must've hurt the staffs feeling by asking why people were being seated after we arrived for our reservation because everything seemed to go downhill from there. In recent years I had really enjoyed going here for birthday celebrations, anniversary's, etc. however my most recent visit was quite unpleasant. I was with a small group and we wanted just a drink and small bites and were turned away because they weren't serving happy hour any longer or we could wait almost close to 2 hours for a table. The service was terrible, even the manager treated us like we should have known better or something. It was incredibly rude and embarrassing for him to speak to customer's that way. You would think that a restaurant would do everything in their power to treat the customers well. I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years and have always respected the customer, but that was not the case for us. I will not be returning. read more

We went to the Chart House for my daughter's birthday dinner. She wanted a restaurant with a view & a "nice" atmosphere. She got it. The menu had "Happy Birthday" printed on it...which was a nice touch. We had the Hummus Trio, Veggie Pasta, Mixed Seafood Grill, Macadamia Crusted Mahi, & Hot Chocolate Lava Cake. All were prepared well, quite tasty, & served in a timely manner. The waiter was awesome. I really wish I could remember his name because he did a great job. I wish I could give no stars. Worst experience ever. Every time I think they will be better & give them another chance I get dissapointed. Decided to go to dinner on acTues at 7:15 to use my birthday $25 Landry's gift. & celebrate . Well we did not get a drink for 3omin. They were out of a beer someone wanted. Out of lemonade . Out of strawberries for cheesecake & joked that the trucked had not. or order was wrong. Got wrong salad & chicken. Instead of shrimp on another salad . Food came way later then first salads out. I think it was over an hour& halftill we got served & order strengthen our. They brought a hamburger out & we had to ask for condiments & food was cold. At one point the waitress ran back to kitchen & said she was going to cry. Never did anything for my birthday like they usually do. 2 other tables in the girls section complained . One sent food back. The manager went to there table but not ours. Usually in past especially being vip's the manager will come over at some point . Knowing this girl was overwhelmed & our food was wrong the manager should have come over. We had to wait for everything way too long & even the check. It was ridiculous. We talked to manager & said the girl was trying but her training &the management skills were bad. . Been going for years to many different chart house's . We are done. I can't believe Mastro's is part of Landry's group . Maybe Mastro's should give Chart House some training. Too bad to see them go downhill . Skip this place. read more

We had an awesome meal here the other night. Walked in around 8 on a Tues. and was told there was a 30 min wait for a table. Not exactly sure how that could be possible, but we opted for a bar table instead and I'm SO glad we did! Our server (Katie?) was SUPER nice. She gave us great recommendations on what to order and advised us to split some items because of their portion size. Thank god she did, the food was amazing and the portions were huge! We would've over-ordered if not for her. She even gave us some insider whale watching tips! It was a lovely evening and we went home with happy, full bellies. Have only eaten here for happy hour and have LOVED it. The Mango Mojitos are my favorite along with the Prime Rib sliders :P HH is every day except Sat. Very disappointed in how they addressed a situation that could have been easily handled. Because we didn't have reservations we asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar and order food- otherwise we would of had to wait 2 hours for a table. The hostess (as well as another service member) told us Yes, we could sit at any table with black napkins and order food. Long story short / the manager came over (after we sat in the appropriate table with black napkins) and said NO, we could not sit there, they were short of tables and asked us to either leave or put our name on the waiting list. It was really unbelievable, as well as very embarrassing to have to get up and LEAVE. There was no sincerity in his apology and didn't even TRY to compensate us in any way. We are local to this area and even belong to their Starwood member group! I can't tell you how unfriendly and uncooperative the manager was to us and really how rude he behaved. Made reservations via yelp for my husband's bday dinner. I made a note that it was husbands bday and also called the restaurant and asked if they do anything special for birthdays ex.bring out a slice of cake with a candle and the guy on the phone told me the only thing they do is put happy bday with the name on top of the menu. I was contemplating on cancelling the reservation and going somewhere else because I wanted my husband's birthday to be extra special. They did call me the day of to ask what my husband's name is so they can put it on the menu. I decided to stick to this restaurant based on other yelpers good reviews. And I'm glad I did! We showed up a little bit earlier than 5 and was told they will seat us in 8 mins. I asked for a window seat too. We were taken to our table and the view was gorgeous! Even though it was beginning to turn dark, we were still able to enjoy the view of lights from the city. They gave us our menus but my husband didn't see the happy birthday Johnny on top until I pointed it out. Haha. He was surprised so I score! They brought out bread and crackers for us. We ordered a cup of clam chowder to share and east meets west tuna as appetizers. For entree I ordered the baked salmon and added mash potatoes and the Mr ordered their recommended ahi tuna dish.They brought out our clam chowder which they split into two bowls for us since we only ordered one. That was a very nice gesture! The clam chowder was divine! There was so much flavor and it was buttery! Yumm. Next came the tuna appetizer. It came with plantain chips, slices of seared tuna with avocado on top of kimchi slaw and tuna tartar. The tuna was very fresh and delicious! The kimchi slaw was kind of weird though. Didn't taste much like kimchi. Next came our entrees. My salmon came with broccoli too. The salmon was pretty good. It was moist on the inside but it didn't have as much flavor as I thought it would have. But the mash potatoes was very good. My husband's dish came with 2 pieces of ahi tuna on top of wasabi mash potatoes and a soy, ginger and butter sauce. This is a must get dish! He savored every single bite! He said it was very fresh, buttery and the sauce was amazing! We couldn't finish our food and asked for boxes and the check. Instead of bringing out the check our waitress Debbie brought out a slice of mudpie cake with a candle! We were both very surprised esp since they said they don't do anything like that! Extra points just for that! And that was one amazing slice of mudpie! I don't eat sweets but that cake was super good! Overall we had a very good experience here from the view, the food and the attentive service from our waitress Debbie. Yeah, I write long reviews. I can't help myself, sooooooooo: 5 Stars to the Ambience and spectacular view. We're locals, and I haven't eaten here in ten years. It's still impressive to see the beautiful teak woodwork, and the view is nothing short of panoramic and gorgeous. Four stars to the value, ONLY because we ordered from the value menu! Otherwise, this is a very expensive place to eat...and, this is chain food quality food. It was my son's birthday, and it was a nice touch to have personalized menus that said "Happy 24th Birthday, Brian". Nice! This is a chain, and definitely can be pricey, but to me-- it's been a Monterey institution for 30 years. An entree can be an average of $35.00 for fish-- but, look closely and they have a prix fixe menu of $30.00 per person (Mon-Thurs only) , plus they have an Early Bird Dinner Menu that you have to ask for. You're welcome. We went for the Prix Fixe-- I got the short ribs, hubs got the Tilapia and son got the prawns. Two of us got the chopped salad, served with a vinaigrette that had a touch of radish to-- slight heat that tapered off quickly. Hubs got the Clam Chowder, which was thick and quite good. My short ribs were tender, and the sauce was really good. It came with mashed potatoes and a broiled tomato. Hub's Tilapia was really delicious, and it tasted like a Beurre Blanc sauce. Nicely done, with rice. My son's dinner was "meh". The prawns were encrusted with panko, but it was just OK. The mango salsa looked dry and boring. Sorry. For dessert we each got a slice of the Mud Pie-- coffee ice cream with a chocolate crust. It's rich, and quite good. We had three glasses of Pinot Noir-- Total tab was $120.00, plus tip. Considering we had dinner for TWO at the neighboring Fish Hopper-- with no salad or dessert, this is a much better bargain. Five stars to the service, which was very good and courteous. No complaints there, at all. I love Prime Rib, so I'll come back in less than ten years to try the Early Bird for $22.00 (a la carte). This really is a very beautiful place to enjoy the beautiful of the Monterey Bay, and to watch the Pelicans soaring over the ocean. I do consider ourselves blessed to live here. read more

So the story here is that I wanted to take my boyfriend out for a fun adventerous day and a nice dinner that night--he was leaving for school later that week. We had a fabulous day around Monterey and I had made reservations for dinner there that night. Some of the things I was really impressed with were the views (it is gorgeous.. make sure you sit as close to the far end of the restaurant as possible) and some of the food. We ordered the artichoke appetizer (i am a HUGE fan of artichokes and it's weird but I remember ordering this plate when I was younger and loving it), and it was okay... maybe my expectations were too high. It was moderately warm, but my biggest problem with it was that alot of the leaves weren't very soft or tender... it was rather difficult to eat. However, my prime rib was very delicious and my boyfriend enjoyed his "shrimp platter." Probably my favorite thing about the actual meal was the dessert. We placed the order at the same time as our entrees (the menu prompts you to do so) and it was well worth it. I don't entirely recall what it was called but it was a freshly baked brownie sort of thing with ice cream--basically heaven on a plate. Some of the things that knocked it down to a four for me included: -we were not seated at a window seat, despite the fact that three next to us were available and I had mentioned it was a special occasion. several other groups (including couples) were seated there after we arrived. -the food arrived really fast. I was expecting more of a leisurely dinner, especially considering it was a monday night and they didn't seem very busy. Our reservations were at 6:15 and we were done with all our food even before 7 (including dessert)--which felt a bit rushed considering the upscale nature of the restaurant. -the girls at the front desk were whispering to each other and looking condescendingly at us when we arrived. Having several years of experience working at a front desk it is something I definitely notice and I think that those girls should be more careful about how they appear to guests--especially considering they are truly the first impression. I FINALLY went to Chart house. I have been thinking about it for a very long time and haven't had the opportunity. Some of my besties came to the area, so I took them there. AMAZING! I took my son and his girlfriend to the Chart House for a special dinner because he's going away to college in Monterey. We were seated in minutes because we had an OPEN TABLE reservation. I overheard the hostess say is was a 2 hour wait. Yicks!! The food was amazing and we had a window table watching the sea otters play and frolic. Was a great experience and one I usually do each visit to Monterey. Service is always great and desserts are especially fantastic as was our dinner selections. My fiancé Chris & i ate here for our 3 year engagement anniversary. We were greeted with a smile & a custom menu that wished us a happy anniversary. We were seated at a table that was candle lit & set up for two. On top of that the table was right in front of the window that looked out on to the bay & city. We both ordered drinks. I had a yummy lemon drop & Chris had a margarita. Both drink were very good. For our appetizer we shared a bowl of award winning clam chowder... Now we know why its award winning. The soup was thick, creamy, had a lot of clams & vegetables. For our main entree we both ordered the mixed seafood grill. This entree allowed us to try a little bit of everything the restaurant offers (highly recommend!). I wanted to try the dessert but by the time we were finished with our meal we were full. The Chart House, how I wished I would have loved you more! This place has a great atmosphere, terrific views and wonderful service. I just wasn't that impressed with the food. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but when I sit down and order a $30.00 Steak, it better be cooked right and very good. I did not get that here. Both my husband and I got the Filet. We ordered them medium. They came out very medium RARE, almost rare. So we had to send them back, which always disappoints me a little. Then there were returned to us, way overcooked this time. By this point, we didn't bother to send them back again. A place like this should have a chef that can cook a medium steak to perfection. The beef was also lacking seasoning. I felt like I needed steak sauce, and you should never feel that way, when you are eating a great cut of meat. We ordered the Lava Dessert to share, and it was fantastic. You order it in the beginning of dinner so they can make it fresh for you. I would highly recommend it. Wish it could have been better. For a meat lover like myself, I would recommend the Filet at The Fisherman's Grotto, just about 5 to 10 minutes away. read more

Executive Summary: This restaurant chain wants to be upscale, but it's loose at best. (No reservation, shorts and a t-shirt will still get you seated on a Friday evening.) Maybe the kitchen does better some nights, but I'd only call the seafood "good" if I'd been eating at their Colorado or Kentucky locations. Many of their "window tables" offer a nice view of the side of a building, and the one-size-fits-all menu snubs California. Overall a disappointment, including dessert, but maybe your luck will be better. I really wanted to like Chart House, especially with all the great reviews by Yelp'ers. And at $25-30 for most entrees, and a stated "casual elegant" dress, I was expecting a nice dinner at a nice restaurant. This is a nice location, on the water, but many tables get a great view of the next-door building, including the two we were offered. I did receive a call to confirm the OpenTable reservation... 30 minutes prior to the reservation time. This included an answer about their wine list and corkage fee (little late, guys). Speaking of the wine list, 3 Sauvignon Blanc's from Marlborough, and none of them were Kim Crawford? The food was meh. No fresh fish from the bay, here... probably to maintain consistency across their 20+ locations. Things were dry, overcooked, bland, and generally unimpressive. The "Crab Encrusted Mahi Mahi" - well, "crab encrusted" seems to mean "crab gravy", and the fresh fish with my "Mixed Grill" - not listed on the menu - turned out to be salmon. I was looking forward to dessert, with everyone raving about the Lava Cake. Now, this looks like it could be a very nice dessert, if it isn't overcooked (or left under a heat lamp, or whatever happened), but I would've happily skipped dessert here and stopped at Ghirardelli. Aside from the late 'confirmation', service was good... until they dropped the ball when our waitress took a break, and we were left waiting 10 minutes for someone to pick up the check. Oh, and espresso with dessert? "Sorry, our cappucino machine is out of order." The Fish Hopper seems has consistently done better on quality and seating, for around the same price... maybe I just chose the wrong Friday, but I'm unlikely to give them a second try. This just feels like an example of how not to do a chain restaurant. I really expect more from a restaurant that's trying to compete in this category and price level, especially on Cannery Row. read more

The Chart House has pleasant atmosphere, comfortable seating and a gorgeous view. If you enjoy restaurants like Olive Garden and Red Lobster then you will, undoubtedly, enjoy The Chart House because it is nothing more than a chain restaurant and the quality of the food reflects that. Service was good but when the salad from the salad bar tastes meh--that's not a good sign. I had the filet mignon and I'm not convinced that it wasn't a glued meat--you know, where restaurants take scraps of meat or inexpensive cuts of meat and form it into the shape of a filet and hold it all together with blood glue. The filet was flavorless and dry--no juices emerged when I cut into it and to top it off, the steak had the classic fake grill marks! The mashed potatoes were tasteless, no doubt from a box. Next time we are in Monterey we will avoid the Chart House. read more

To get a 5 Star in my book, it has to be outstanding in every way, and last night it was! From the host, to the atmosphere, to the service, view and food, it was outstanding! We ordered the Shrimp, Crab, Avocado & Mango Stack for our appetizer, and not only was it beautiful, it was delicious! Then of course, I had to have the Clam Chowder, and it was very good as well. I might mention here that while we were enjoying this wonderful dinner, the view of the bay and wildlife was spectacular! We saw lots of otters and seabirds, and even some harbor seals, too! For our entrees, my wife had the Coconut Shrimp appetizer with a trip to the salad bar, and raved over how good it was! I took the advice of our server, Julian, and ordered the Maize Shrimp & Scallop dish, also with a trip to the salad bar. It was wonderful, too! Even though neither of us really had room, we ordered a slice of Mud Pie, a Chart House classic! I can't wait till our next visit to Monterey so we can dine there again! read more

I love this place! Amazing Views, great attentive service, a decent wine list, and DELICIOUS food! We usually get the King Crab Legs - yum yum! I would recommend this place for a date or special occasion - it's not too noisy, and the restaurant has nice decor. Most imporatntly, the food is great! I believe in saving the best for last so I'll start with the reason behind the missing 5th star......we had dinner reservations I had made a couple of days prior for 5:30. We got there at 5:15 and were asked t sit in the waiting area.....which I did not find odd. That is until 3 walk in parties with no reservations were sat prior to us AND 2/3 got window seats and we did not. Thats a pretty stinky way to start a dining experience. The service and food was just good enough to make up for it. To start we had the Prosciutto Shrimp Enbrochette.......1 word-Amazing. My husband is not a fan of shrimp and he loved it. Our entree's (Prime Rib and Crab stuffed Tilapia) were perfect as well as dessert. The food was brought out in perfect timing, the waiter was attentive and gracious. We were pleased. Last comment, I ordered a Mojito and it was flat....bleh. But thats ok too. We'll be back read more
