We went here for Happy Hour! Check out the menu! It was PERFECT and saved us so much money! To start I ordered the monarch margarita on the happy hour menu and my mom got a glass of the riesling. My drink was SO GOOD that i got two more....at happy hours prices! Our server was Melanie. She was terrific. She took our order and brought us some yummy warm bread. Then we ordered the hummus trio and since we kept seeing artichokes everywhere, we thought we should TRY the fried artichokes. The artichokes were served with a dipping sauce, like a ranch dressing. And were good. But what isn't good when its fried? The hummus was also tasty and served with about 6 or 7 soft pita triangles. Our favorite hummus was the one with a little bite to it. Then, i ordered the fish tacos and mom got the prime rib sliders. There were two fish tacos and they were delicious. I chowed them down and got a little extra hot sauce on the side. YUMMMMMY! And mom ate 2 of her 3 sliders. I was sad to let it go to waste but we were stuffed! No dessert. Our Happy Hour bill was $49. A total steal for all the food we got and the alcoholic drinks too! I had 3 and mom had 1. Overall, I'd RUN back here for happy hour. You can't beat the menu, the prices or the view. And if you get Melanie, she'll take good care of you. Came here for Happy Hour after having two high priced meals on the prior nights. Just wanted to grab a cocktail and something light to eat. I had a margarita and my friend had a glass of wine. The margarita was way too sweet. My bad though, I should have read the ingredients closer and I would have known. We got the artichoke dip and fish tacos. The dip was good, my friend didn't like he tomatoes on the top but I was ok with them. There were like 8 crostini with the dip, clearly not enough. Our waiter brought us more without us even asking, props to him. The fish tacos were good and good size. All for $25 it was a great deal. This place has an AMAZING salad bar it has everything you want on a salad and then some!! The reason I'm giving only 2 stars is because the food was cold. The baked potato wasn't warm enough to melt the butter prime rib was more fat then actual edible meat. Mashed potatoes had a great flavor but they were cold. Before I go away on vacation, I typically look at many different sources for reviews. All the reviews for the Chart House were good enough for my fiancee and I to visit on our anniversary vacation. With that said, I made a reservation on OpenTable and indicated we were celebrating our anniversary. When the restaurant called me to confirm, they asked confirmed we were celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived and checked in, we waited about 5-10 minutes for a table, which is normal. However; when we were seated, we didn't get a table next to the window, we got one three rows over from the window, just overlooking it, next to a table of about 20-25 people. We asked if we could sit closer to the window and were denied (a little odd, but it's fine, no big deal). On to the dinner, we were greeted by our waiter (I don't remember his name), who gave us a bit of an attitude when we wanted to taste a few different wines. We wound up ordering two of the wines and he seemed to get over his attitude. We ordered the Wicked Tuna to start. It was very good! A little too complex, which made it difficult to figure out how to eat it, but ok. For the main course, I ordered the Spiced Ahi ($39) and my fiancee ordered the Mac Nut Mahi ($39). I used the prices for a reason. For that kind of money, I expect to have a good meal. The Ahi was definitely not sushi-grade, because it was stringy and gross, in fact, I think I spent more time peeling away the white strings and left over more than half of it on the plate. After looking at it later, I thought I could send it back, but the thought of dealing with the waiter who gave me attitude and the overall experience just didn't give me the right feeling. Thankfully, I did not get sick afterward. My fiancee is pretty sure the Mahi was previously frozen. Texture wise and feeling it, it did not seem fresh (which is surprising given the area). We have eaten at some of the best establishments and are well versed in how food should be. If you are spending the amount of money, you should get a fresh meal. Two weeks prior, I ordered Ahi in one of the best restaurants in Texas and paid less than $39 for perhaps the best tuna I ever ate. Maybe there is a reason Zagat has not rated this restaurant. For the record, our waiter NEVER came over to see how we were doing or to see how the food was. Most of the time, he was nowhere to be found. I do not live nearby and I would not come back here even if I was offered a free meal! read more

Bad server and the foods are average. Our waiter was not friendly and condescending. I think he assumed we're new to fine dinning when we asked about happy hours. He was condescending when he talk to my wife. Also, his recommendation for crab over mango and avocado was average. Only 2 stale sweet potato chip came with the Tartar. The avocado pieces were raw, not ripen. My daughter's fries were soggy. I have to say the chicken tenders were good, crispy and moist. My daughter well done hamburger was very dry dry, maybe it's lean. Our dinner takes really long time to get to us. We're getting full from our oyster and crab tartar appetizers. Just left one of the worst dining experiences ever. We both ordered prime rib medium rare. One of the prime rib dinners was way over cooked and had to be sent back. Both mashed potatoes were cold and had to be sent back. My prime rib was as tough as shoe leather. The Chardonnay by the glass was like vinegar and had to be sent back twice. Manager came over and acknowledged the issues and her resolution was to buy dessert. Really? That's all you are going to do? The service was so slow and not efficient. Went there for my anniversary dinner last night, as usual the service and atmosphere was perfect. The food not so much. All of our seafood was overcooked. The shrimp was like rubber and the mussels were terrible. Spoke to the waiter and jokingly asked if the head chef was off on Sundays. He replied that currently they do not have one. I love this place. We have always had good experiences when we ate here. But when it comes to take out... i was REALLY disappointed with the Kimchi Calamari we got. We ordered two for dinner and when we picked it up it was very dry, if they had put any of the sauce it was totally soaked up by the breading. My family has dined at The Charthouse for years. The food is always is tasty, I wish all of the fish they served was wild. The salad bar has lots of options. The hearts of palm, mushrooms and caviar are my favorites. The mixed greens were slightly wilted, but everything else was fabulous. My mom ordered the 'Ultimate Margarita' and yours truly opted for the classic 'Dirty Martini' which were perfect. Ashlyn our server was extremely attentive as well as friendly. We had such an amazing dinner here last night. Everything was perfect. My husband had the Lobster bisque and shrimp pasta, and my filet had a a flavorful char and tenderness inside. I love this place. I've been here about two or three times now. I live about an hour away from here so I don't come here often. But when i go, i stuff my face everything is so good! I've had better food, but this is definitely on my top favorite places. The view is amazing, the place is really great too. This past time i went, I called in to reserve a table and they asked whether or not there was a special occasion, and it just so happened that we were going because it was my dad's birthday, so i told them that. When we got there, they handed us their paper menu's and right across the top it said Happy Birthday with my dads name there too! I thought it was fantastic that they did that. Beautiful ambiance and decent food. Crab cake and artichoke appetizers are amazing. Clam chowder is amazing. My aunt loves their all you can eat salad bar deal. Others in my party had prime rib and crab legs, which they seemed to enjoy. Service was a bit rusty and slow. Even though we had reservations @ 5pm, arrived at 4:50 and were one of the first to arrive, we weren't seated until almost 5:20pm. Went here for dinner one night with my partner. Read some of the reviews and people had some great things to say. First, let me preface that I'm critical of the ambiance of a place as much as I am about the food and drink. Charter House was nice, but nothing extraordinary (food and ambiance). Food I know I committed a cardinal sin when I ordered beef from a seafood restaurant, but hey, I love a good Prime Rib and this place is run by the Landry's Company so figured it was a good bet. The Prime Rib was okay. Not bad and not anything that was worth writing home about. I also had the Lobster Bisque, which again was average. There also seemed to be little to no Lobster which was disappointing. Drink This is where they definitely lost a star to star and a half with me. A place such as this should have bartenders that know how to make and Old Fashioned appropriately. We each ordered one and received them right when we were set to be seated. Upon tasting them we werent quite sure what was mixed in, but it tasted like Sprite. Probably the worst Old Fashioned I have ever had. Service Generally good. The young man serving was polite and attentive. I'd have to say though he needs to learn to speak up. It was busy in the restaurant but not so much that my partner and I needed to ask him to repeat himself several times. Overall Good place if you're looking to have a nice night out. This restaurant is such a great place to bring guests when visiting Monterey. We had reservations for my birthday and we were seated early. They always ask if you are celebrating a special occasion and actually wished me Happy Birthday at the top of the menu. The fish selection fits so well with what is fresh and in season. But don't overlook the meat selection, their Prime Rib just melts in your mouth and the sides are very respectable for any pallet. The clam chowder is so creamy but order it to be served in the pewter bowl, it stays super hot and so very yummy! They also make a wonderful Caesar Salad, not overdressed and lots of shaved Parmesan cheese on top. The staff is great and really accommodating. They are happy to change out the starches for other items that are available. Their dessert selection is great, but if you want to splurge order the Lava Cake when your sit down, you will not be disappointed. Awesome for the chocolate lovers at your table. This is my go-to place for Monterey, great for a dinner for 2 or more. Everyone always walks away a bit heavier and happy. Worth the membership to Landry's, and the gift cards can be used at any of their restaurants, especially for your birthday credit! Love this place!!!! read more

We came in without a reservation and were seated within few minutes. Kenya...forgive me if name is misspelled...was a fantastic hostess! Our server Vincent was on point all night! He was not only informative on various dining suggestions, but checked in on us every few minutes if we needed anything. We had the Callahan cut prime rib and it was cooked to perfection! This is really sad for me. This used to be one of our favorite places. You can read my previous reviews about what happened. Eventually I talked to the manager, Alex, who asked me to give them the chance to undo our previous terrible experience. He promised to "personally ensure a great experience". So on 9/26/19 we went back. In the beginning they gave us a very mediocre table, and in the end they super-overcooked our lava cake desserts (there was ZERO "lava"). In between, the food and service were good, but not quite up to the standards we were used to at the Chart House before. And, of course, Alex was nowhere to be seen all night. Alex, here's a hint: When you ask a customer to give you another chance and promise them a great experience, you better come through. The Chart House is aesthetically pleasing to the eye in a great location and all, but the servers at this location are short staffed and the one that we had did not provide direct attention to our needs. Our server was Mark, who made it a point to let everyone in his area know that he came out out of retirement to work for the Chart House while going to Grad school. It was my wife's birthday and we thought it would be special to go to this establishment based on the 4.5 star rating and customer reviews. She ordered Mahi and to her dismay, and it was way overcooked to the point of being tough. I ordered the prime rib and there was nothing "PRIME" about it. When we tried to get Mark's attention, he was chatting it up with a larger group next to our table, and finally nodded acknowledgement to our needs. But ....... 10 minutes later. I have been to a different Chart House many years ago and remembered excellent food and service. But this was well below our expectations and 3 stars is actually generous and based solely on the location and aesthetics . The food is marginal compared to other options on Cannery Row and I am sure that we will not return based on my wife's negative vibes and experience that hinged on Marks attraction to the larger crowd that fed his ego. Came here while visiting the Monterey/Carmel area on a brief staycation. Ideal location in Cannery Row and was a big fan of the design and layout of the entire restaurant. We ended up starting with the shrimp and lobster spring rolls before moving onto our entrees of Spicy Ahi in a wasabi cream and soy ginger sauce and pan seared sea bass with a special avocado pico de gallo topping. Dessert was a chocolate lava cake with mint chocolate chip ice cream --- yay for options besides vanilla! All washed down with wine and a berry moscow mule. Overall, a really enjoyable experience in all aspects (location, decor/ambiance, food, drinks and service). MEH, that's all I can say. My boyfriend and I were on our 5 year anniversary trip and decided to have dinner here on 11/2/18. We made a reservation through open table and I requested a menu that said "Happy Anniversary". When we arrived, I asked to have a window table and it took about 10 minutes, no problem. Our menu had happy anniversary on it which was a nice tough. The hosts were sweet and we had no problems there but the real problem was with the delivery of service. Our server was very unattentive and we had to basically call him down every time we needed something. We ordered the calamari and shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and they were good. The real problem was with our meal, we decided to order a steak and lobster and split it since it was a big steak. The lobster was great but the steak was really chewy and flavorless, something you would get at a TGI Fridays. I know this isn't a Flemings or Mastros Steakhouse but for $40 a steak, I'd expect a bit better. We had to ask our server for steak knives for our dinner, isn't that something you should automatically bring out for guests that ordered a steak?? So weird. It was really a shame. My wife and I went here for happy hour yesterday. That I highly recommend. The hummus and Ahi appetizers were superb and the view excellent. We returned tonight for dinner. They had one large party of perhaps thirty people. The noise was excessive. People were shouting across the dining area. It was nearly impossible to have a conversation. The food was overcooked, probably secondary to trying to serve such a large party. It was a delight to walk outside to the quiet and beauty of the surrounding area. Our server was really nice and made sure to accommodate my vegan meal. I had originally ordered two baked potatoes and a salad, he came back a few minutes later to tell me that the baked potatoes have an egg white wash on top. I was super grateful he told me, because there is no way I could have known that. Instead, he had the chef make a delicious veggie plate for me with a tasty tomato basil sauce. I can confidently say I have eaten here more than a dozen times. I normally stay at a high-end bed and breakfast which makes reservations for us. Because they are a highly respected bed-and-breakfast the accommodations at this restaurant are always the highest quality. Meaning you are provided special treatment and/or placed normally a VIP portion of the restaurant which has a window directly next to the water. And addition we are normally, And without hesitation provided a complimentary dessert. Most recently we did get our wedding anniversary specially printed at the top of our menus but that was about it. We were seated at a table away from the water in a two-person booth so to see the water we would have to look over the table of four to see across to the town of seaside and that was about it for the view. The wait staff was prompt but it looked like they were in a hurry to make things happen and not take care of you personally. Like Applebee's or Chili's. The food was about average nothing spectacular. King crab, market rate of $56 was OK. My wife normally got the salad bar and found out it has shrunk and there is no longer caviar which was a staple for years and now the salad bar is two dollars more than a year ago. I also heard an older couple discussing with the manager that the "place has gone down hill" not as upscale as it once was. I would recommend the bar and happy hour at the bar prior to 6:30 PM other than that not really worth it. Terrible disappointment after years of reliable quality and service. Food average, Service average, view disappointing, cost for experience over paid. Find somewhere else to go unless you like the bar. read more

Haven't been to Chart house in probably 8 years. We were soo excited to finally make it back only to be dumb founded. First of all we had a 9pm reservation of which we weren't seated until 9:25. Usually I wouldn't sweat this with a courtesy headsup "we are running a little late", but nothing. Then we are finally seated, our waiter takes our order, and then I guess our waiter quits on the spot. About 10 min later someone else comes over takes our order a second time with no explanation...still no water or bread at our table...it's now 9:55. Finally our cocktails arrive and 3 out of 4 of them are just over sweet. We send them back which they did without question and finally manager comes by to apologize for delay...still no explanation. I eventually grill our new server and get the story about our previous waiter. Food was good ambience excellent...one of my favorite. But was really disappointed with the lack of customer care. Manager was clueless...I own a bar and had this happened to one of my customers it would have been a free round on me like automatic. It may have been just unfortunate circumstance but the fact that our waiter quit like he did and the limp wristed handling of the situation by the manager and then overhearing the patron behind us also complaining about the decline of service over the years at one point asking "is this place under new management" makes me think it wasn't poor luck and just what's to be expected. read more

We had a 645 reservation. I arrived five minutes early and waited till 7 PM. Three hostesses and no one could tell us when our table might be ready. Other people waiting for tables too. This is not the first time to wait. Seems like chart House feels it self important if they make their patrons wait. A disgusting candy dish was out the front door with two opened mints and broken toothpicks. Nasty. There are too many choices with better food and service that we don't need to return. read more

Great place for Happy Hour. This is a beautiful restaurant right on the bay in Monterey with great views. We went there for Happy Hour on a Sunday . The appetizers, cocktails and service were all excellent. We had the Ahi Nachos and Firecracker Shrimp which were so good we ordered another serving of each. We also had the Hummus trio and fried artichokes which were very good. Prices during Happy Hour were very reasonable $4-$6 for each of the appetizers, $6 for cocktails and $5 for a nice glass of wine. Our server was Ashley and she was great. Food is great, but service is better. Manager came over three times to check in on us. My brother didn't like his lobster bisque so I'm not sure if I would order that. Their salad bar is pretty great. They have the classic salad bar items as well as caviar and some other fancy add ons. Also great for families and young kids. We had a 1 and 4 year old with us. They provide coloring sheets and crayons, sippy cups, and are accommodating when kids are... just being kids. They're also very accommodating when it comes to specializing your meal if you are lactose intolerant. I'm definitely coming back next time I visit Monterey. read more
