I must say as a seafood connoisseur I was not very impressed with Charlies. Born and raised on the west bank of New Orleans I know my seafood. I can smell it and tell you if it is Louisiana gulf caught or an imposter! Lol! I found Charlies to be a bit of a letdown:(. I ordered crabmeat au gratin but it was a bit greasy, with the crabmeat lacking and covered up. I returned and tried their shrimp platter, but again it was on the greasy side. The locals here rave about it, but honestly I just don't get it:(. We could use some good seafood restaurants here on the Northshore of NOLA, unfortunately for now Charlies isn't one of them. read more

My girlfriend and I had our first experience here Sunday. How we have never heard of it is beyond me as I love to eat!! We showed up before 11 because we were told by the friends that brought us it gets busy and they were right. Service was excellent and server(I never caught her name) was very attentive. She makes a killer Bloody Mary. Appetizer I ordered Crawfish Balls w/ crawfish sauce. AWESOME. 16 oz ribeye. Giant and delicious!! Cajun pasta was also huge portion and delicious as well. Down home casual atmosphere. Fried fish and fried crawfish tails were great! Crawfish tails are large. Gumbo and shrimp chowder were good.

This is an awesome seafood restaurant with very large portions. They are temporarily closed due to a fire and are expected to open back up in about 6 weeks. read more

The exterior is pretty shanty looking, but locals love this place and since it's open only Wednesdays-Sundays- it's always packed! I ordered to go for a party of 3: 16 oz Ribeye, Fried Alligator Bites, Seafood Gumbo, Cajun Pasta, and Charlie's Platter. The ribeye was pretty tender and prepared to the right temperature. The alligator bites was a large portion to appease the alligator crave in you and your friends. The seafood gumbo didn't stand out from other gumbos I have had. The Cajun Pasta has good seasoning with the local flair. Pretty simple dish with lots of pasta. The Charlie's Platter has juicey breaded fried shrimp, crawfish tails, the frog legs were pretty succulent and well seasoned, the stuff crab was ehh..not too special, but the soft-shelled crab was fresh. The house salad dressing was pretty stellar! Overall, the food is worth eating and leftovers aren't bad either because of the large portions! read more

Okay, this is the octogenarian hot spot. Those guys have been around for a while and they know good seafood! I've been going with my grandma for 10 years now. It's perfect. Great prices, fantastic service, and scrumptious Louisiana seafood for the whole family. This place is always super busy but definitely worth the wait. It's loud in there but the atmosphere is so laid back and friendly that you forget you're at a restaurant and you begin to feel like you're having a big dinner with friends and family. Seriously, if you love seafood go here!!!! If loud environments bother you, you can always call ahead an order to-go. There's also a bar if you want some drinks and apps. This was a disappointing visit to Charlie's. I've always heard their steaks are good but we've only gotten the seafood before. We had a table with four people, two got the 16 oz. ribeye, 1 got the 10 oz. ribeye and one got the seafood. Both of the large steaks came out WAY underdone, they were supposed to be medium and medium well, they were still real red inside. All three of the steaks lacked any flavor. We had to ask for some sort of seasoning. Both of the large steaks were sent back to be re-cooked and still came out underdone. I don't know if they were training a new grill cook but at $160.00 for the table, there is no excuse. I will not be back. read more

Charlie's is one of those great unassuming restaurants. It's one of the best restaurants I've been to on the north shore, which so happens to be next to one of the worst restaurants I have dined at. The Fried Mushroom appetizer is huge, enough for 4 people. I had the T-Bone Steak, and my dining companion had the 10 oz Ribeye. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Second time eating here. We love it. Great food with hometown feeling. The fried food and steaks met our flavor requirements. They have old school checkout systems which was unique. The waitress was a tremendous help with suggestions. After eating in big restaurants a lot, you'd enjoy the small town culture. It's the best in this mall town of Springfield. LA. Yummy! We shared one of the seafood platters and cup of gumbo and I can honestly say I've never had better gumbo. Thick, rich dark brown roux as the base of this spectacularly flavorful gumbo with just a touch of rice and the fish, oysters, shrimp, and crabs were plentiful and beautifully prepared. Charlie's was one of our favorite spots to eat before the new owners bought it. We have had two horrible experiences there since new owners. The first was two sunday's ago on father's day. We went with our 5 children and waited over 2 hours for our food which never came. We then had to stop the owner (who was avoiding us like the plague)and tell him that our food never came. He said he would handle it and never came back to our table and completely avoided eye contact with us. We were then asked to pay for our two seafood platters that were over $20 a piece even though they never came. As we were walking out the door the waitress ran up with our food in to go boxes,food we couldnt keep because we had planned to go see a movie with the kids after. The owner (who is a young guy with no customer service skills) never came to apologize and hid in the back until we left. Our second and last time spending over $100 on horrible food and even worse service was today. We ordered a large shrimp dinner for 3 of our children to split and the shrimp tasted like fryer grease. I ordered the spicy shrimp boiled dinner because I love spicy food. Only the shrimp were so spicy it was inedible. I mean no one could eat it they were so spicy. After trying 3 of the 22 shrimp on my plate I told the waitress that I couldn't eat this and asked for her to take it off the bill. She came back saying that the owner said he wouldn't comp it from our bill because it said spicy on the menu. Now after what happened last time we were furious. The unqualified owner never came to our table and I know he recognized us because we made eye contact with him and he avoided our table once again. We were then expected to pay for a $20 meal we didn't eat because it was inedible. Now a good manager would have comped it and aplogized especially after our last visit. But it seems to me that all this man cares about is over charging loyal customers for disgusting food that we couldnt even consume. Not only that, it took 20 mins to get our drinks ,30 mins to get our appetizers and another 30 to get our terrible food. It is a shame to see a once great restaurant go down like this. We will never spend money there again. We shouldn't have gone back after the first time they did this but we were hoping for the best. Until the new owner gets a lesson in customer service and learns how to run that place I wouldn't recommend anyone eat there. read more

Food is well worth the drive from anywhere. We live in Slidell, LA and make the drive. Food great and the portions are so big you have another meal for another day. Love the fried mushrooms, fried onion rings, stuffed mushrooms, crab balls. We normally get the fried soft shell crab with crawfish etouffee on top. The baked potatoes are so light and fluffy. Didn't think the outside was pretty shanty looking. But I'm more concerned what's being served inside that counts and believe you me, Charlies counts in my book. read more

This is a weekly stop for my family. The food can not be beat. Middendorfs can't even compete with this place. I will start with the staff. Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Marla are the kindest restaurant owners I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. The waitress are very busy but never forget you. CeCe is the best waitress. Her mom, Ms. Diane, is a great barista and waitress. Now for the food. OMG. I have been going here since 2008. Steak night on Thursdays can't be beat. Ur supposed to get a 10 ounce, they are way bigger! The twice baked potatoes are mouth watering. The stuffed mushrooms appetizers are a must. They are huge. They have a portobello mushroom wrapt in a carb ball then deep fried and covered with crab augratin. We eat two and bring two home. The Charlie platter will blow your mind. It feeds myself and my husband for about 6 meals!! I get the boiled shrimp salad quite often. The shrimp are huge and perfectly seasoned. This salad feeds me twice. The seafood pasta is sinfully delicious. My husband and I can eat about 4 meals off of this one dish. Seriously, you can't order anything bad at Charlie's. Go to Charlies!!
