I found Charkbait online while looking up AVET reels for tuna and came across a great informational video on the AVET lineup. I ended up ordering a JX and HX, both spooled with braid which was included free and a mono top shot. Right after placing my order, I realized I had selected the wrong color. I sent an email on a Saturday afternoon fully expecting I would not hear back until Monday if I was lucky. To my surprise, within about half an hour to an hour Sergey, the general manager of the store, personally replied and assured me he would update my order with the correct color. That level of customer service blew me away. On Monday morning I received an updated order confirmation and by Tuesday I had a shipping notification. My reels arrived up in the Bay Area by Thursday. Super legit shop with excellent customer service. I cannot say enough good things about these guys. From now on I will be buying my gear from them. So it's been a while since I've posted on Yelp but my experience with Charkbait was beyond great. Great enough that not only did I want to write a review but I had to find my username and request a new password which in itself is frustrating. So let's get down to what happened, I do not live in the area so being able to walk in is very difficult. When I called the phone number I was went over my issue and the gentleman was very helpful in researching my issue. To my surprise he went back two years into his records to find my transaction. He helped me resolve my issue and I was able to complete my online transaction. My friend passed away about a year ago and spoke nothing but good things about Charkbait. I ordered some fluro and braid in the past but never actually spoke with them on the phone or in person. My transaction recently ended with, "your buddy who passed sounds like a good guy and I'm glad to help." The call was easy, fast, knowledgeable and not rushed. I have never experienced better customer service in my whole life and moving forward will be a lifetime client and advocate for this business. read more

Stopped by this place to stock up on gear for a big weekend fishing trip but left without buying anything at all after experiencing a terrible encounter with their only employee at the counter. Went into the store and it was completely empty and with no greeting we went on ahead to check out their hooks selection. After flagging down the young guy at the counter and asking him what we needed, he talked to us in a very condescending manner as if we didn't know what we wanted. He acted incredibly annoyed and rude like we were a bother. Not to mention, he had no mask on. Yeah I get OC is against mask wearing but at least have it on your chin and act like you somewhat care about your customers. We should've checked out the yelp reviews before wasting our time here because apparently other have also had similar maskless encounters with a young cocky condescending staff member. So, I got a reply to my previous review on 12/31/2020 calling me a male phallic symbol by the owner for my post from 2019! He didn't mention that every other store in the center had power and was operating that day. Maybe he finally paid the power bill so he could read the Yelp reviews today? I stood up for Charkbait when Shimano gave them the death knell because they fought for us as consumers. However at some point they turned on their customers and it has not been good. If you are a potential customer, read all the reviews and decide for yourself. It is clear when dealing with Charkbait: 1. They DGAF about posted operating hours. Call before you go. 2. When it comes to billing with online orders, buyer beware. Make sure you check your credit card receipt immediately and don't be surprised IF you are charged a different price. 3. As Chark posted, "We maintain a SEVEN day refund and 30 day exchange policy." That is is not in line with we "Treat our clients as we would like to be treated." When one buys a reel or rod that blows up, a refund within 21 to 30 days is reasonable. Be prepared to be dealing with the maker of anything you buy there while pounding the sand near Chark's store. I've been shopping at Charkbait for several years now as they are just around the block from where I live. I buy all my blanks from them and all the components for rod building. The service has been excellent, Sergei, Tommy, Richard and the other guys are knowledgeable and service oriented. They have been able to guide me with the correct setups for all the different types of fishing that I do. They carry products that other tackle shops don't have, especially jigs and lures for tuna, for instance they carry Nature Boys jigs and the new tungsten lures which can get you down faster when the tuna are finicky. Went to Charkbait to buy a few rods and reels for my new boat. At first glance it is a small but well stocked tackle shop. I was approached by a unmasked employee and asked if I needed any help. Being 67 years old this made me incredibly uneasy. As I looked around there were 2 more employees unmasked. Store is small with little air circulation so I left without making a purchase. It is extremely unlikely that I would ever patronize this store as they have no regard for their customers well being. read more

I have been out of the fishing game for over 20 years and wanted to jump back in. I'm originally from Southern Californa, but have been living in Arizona for the past 8 years. I went to our local saltwater fishing supply here in Phoenix and was pretty much ignored by the staff. I decided to go online to see what other options were out there. I found Charkbait and they seemed to have a substantial internet presence. I looked at their products online and, naturally, had some questions. I reached out to them and received very detailed and helpful responses from the owner, Mark. He was very patient and exchanged several e-mails with me over the course of several weeks. After spending Thanksgiving with family at the Isthmus on Catalina Island, my wife and I decided to stop by the shop on the way back to Phoenix. We wanted to put our hands on the rods and reels we had been talking over with Mark to get a better idea... We met Sergei, Beta and Blake at the shop and they all spent time with us (over an hour...maybe two), giving recommendations, letting us handle and test the equipment, etc. We left with a better idea of what we had discussed via e-mail, got home and placed a $1500+ order that weekend. The products arrived in good time and condition. We just recently followed up with another $600+ order for iron jigs, lures, different test fluoro leader material, etc. On this particular order, due to the more varied details of the products, we had even more questions. I continued working on this order with Beta as he had worked extensively with me before. While making suggestions on tackle, Beta would casually drop his deep knowledge of fishing technique to me. Let me tell you, the stuff Beta shared is gold (acquired through years of trial and error, no doubt) and shared freely, not to sell product, but to share the stoke of fishing. I finished up the final order selections with Tom (who seemed equally as knowledgeable as Beta...and just as patient!). Tom had some additional insights which he freely shared and was very calm and easy to work with. Bottom line: These guys work to find the best value products for your particular applications. They aren't interested in selling you the most expensive stuff or stuff you don't need. I can honestly say that the folks at Charkbait have gotten me up to good speed in a short amount of time because they have been willing to share their knowledge of sport fishing. The folks there are extremely passionate about fishing and have the knowledge to go with that passion. All three of those guys have really gone ABOVE and BEYOND the average customer service and I appreciate it! I'm looking forward to receiving my next order, getting on the water and putting it to good use. Kudos to all the folks at Charkbait for taking care of our fishing needs! Ordering online with these people are a complete joke. After I've placed my order, 2 days later a guy called telling me the items I ordered will ship within a few days. More than 4 weeks has passed and still they haven't shipped the items. Credit card has been charged. Emailed them several times just to get an approximate ETA. The only reply was "you will get an email confirmation once the items are shipped". Called the HB store to ask why it was taking so long, and got the run around. Always the guy that handle the online orders was not around. Judging from other people's reviews, this seem to be the trend. Very disappointing since I've spent so much money here over the years. My advice is to call them to see if the items you want are in stock. Then go to the store to pick it up. Otherwise be prepare for an antagonizing wait. read more

I've been shopping at Charkbait for a few years now. After having a bad experience at another tackle shop in the area I was told to give Charkbait a try. Boy I'm glad I did. The level of customer service here is above and beyond. All of the employees are very friendly and Blake and Serge are extremely knowledgeable from everything from trout to big bluefin/yellowfin, trolling for wahoo or slow pitch jigging etc. This really is a Mom and Pop business with Mark (the owner), his wife, and son Serge working there nearly everyday. They have everything you need here. Other stores may be larger but this store doesn't stock their shelves with junk you don't need like most other stores. Every time I walk in it feels like home. I'm always greeted with a smile and asked how I'm doing and if I need help finding anything or have any questions. I always say hello to Mark as his experience is invaluable and always has an interesting story or piece of information to share. I felt compelled to write this review after seeing some recent 1 star reviews that I felt were extremely bogus. If you purchase and fish a reel that ends up breaking how do you expect Charkbait to fix the problem? I save all of my receipts on big purchases and contact the manufacturer with any issues unless I'm shopping at a giant corporation like Best Buy or Walmart. That's why manufacturers of fishing reels/rods have a warranty. Because the company making them deals with issues it's not the seller of the product that should be held liable. Also to the mask reviews. If you are wearing a mask yourself and you think they work why do you care if someone else is wearing one? And if you dont believe they work but are still wearing one then I don't know what to tell you. If you are scared your mask doesn't work and are relying on someone else's mask to protect you maybe you should stay at home and shop online. Charkbait offers online purchases as well so you can stay home with your mask on and order in the safety of your own home. I have purchased over a dozen reels here and more tackle than I need and I will continue doing so because I believe in supporting small and local businesses. Don't waste your money here. Customer service from Mark (Owner) is ridiculous. I'm not sure if he was having a bad day or what but regardless that's not how he should treat anyone. I bought a Penn Fathom 2 speed reel 2 months ago and went on two 1.5 day trips and caught about 10 yellowtails and school size bluefin on it. During the 2nd trip, it started to lose freespool and the drag was not very smooth so I had to put it away and use a different rod. After I got back, I called Charkbait to find out if they service reels or if they send it out to Penn for warranty work since it's only 2 months old or what my other options were. The first thing Mark asked me was if I serviced the reels myself and that it should be washed with fresh water and taken apart and regreased after EVERY trip. (I don't know about others but I get my reels serviced after every season, not EVERY trip). Then he goes on and tells me how he's had an Avet reel for over 20 years and it's still going strong because he services it on a regular basis and he's been on long range trips and have seen some popular angler (forgot his name) sit in the galley to service all of his reels. Bottom line... GO somewhere else like Longfin tackle in Orange. Those guys at Longfin will take care of you. I'm all about supporting local/family businesses but not Charkbait. Also, don't ask about Shimano products unless you want to get an attitude from them. read more

I don't write bad reviews, I'm pretty empathetic to small businesses as I used to manage a small retail store myself. As a general rule, I like to support local companies, especially those selling fishing and hunting gear. So here I am compelled to write a bad review, because never in my life, have I been treated so poorly by a business that I was trying to spend some decent money with... All I wanted to do was verify inventory on Avet MXJ's, prior to placing an order online. I found Charkbait through Avet's own site and was happy that they were a California company. I value experienced shops in the fishing industry, I value their expertise... instead, I was accused of being a supply chain store reject, thanks for telling me how much you hate them or me... while at the same time feeling the need to explain to me that people need to support small businesses and buy local, hey, burrito man, that's what I was trying to do. "Just place the order and we'll either fulfill it or cancel it if it is back ordered, I want to get back to my burrito!" If you would have let me get a word in, I wanted to get your opinion on some rods, but I couldn't even speak because you wouldn't let me and had already determined what type of caller I was. Anyway, you may feel justified in how you talked to me, or maybe you're just having a bad day, or maybe it was the beans in that burrito causing you some gastrointestinal pain... but if you're trying to get people to support local businesses, maybe, just maybe... don't be an asshole. read more

I came to this store and it seemed like they had their loyal customers there and weren't very helpful. They workers or other customers thought I didn't know anything about fishing like I was some kind of noob. So finally I get some help from a veteran fisher who was very helpful. But the young kid who was working there probably 18-25 yrs yapping it up with a sales rep while I'm trying to buy stuff. Very ignorant and cocky employee who thought he was too cool for school. I still needed up buying a Makaira 16 SEa II and a Fathom 25NSDP which out the door I spent about $1,000 as a first time customer. Finally he shows some respect after I spent a lot of money in that store. As far as customer service goes I'd give that store a 1/10 and the only reason I'd go back to the store is bc if they veteran fisherman that was working that day. That lil punk kid employee needs to get fired. If I were the owner he'd be fired immediately but it's probably the owners son so nothings been done about it. It seems like I was in high school like the cool kids hang out in this corner, the jocks in the back, and the stoners in the parking lot and that employee thought he was the cool kid and the veteran was the jock but the cool one not the douche kind. Used to be my go to, not anymore! Purchased a reel from these folks and took it out for a spin. It's an Avet HX 2 speed.Hooked up a Dorado, nice one at that. Got it up and down and put the reel in low gear, got the fish, belly bumps, high fives, uh oh, couldn't get it out of low gear. Took it to Charkbait, after only two weeks of owning it, and they basically told me I was on my own. I asked the guy why they don't stand behind products? He said " we do but you have to deal with"! So I had to pay for shipping, blah, blah, blah! They not only lost a good paying customer, but I have a quite large group of friends that will not longer use this place! I came here with a friend a few months ago. Being new to the area and needing a new reel, I bought a $200 Okuma Cedros reel from charkbait. I took the reel out for the first time a week ago. While I was fishing, the drag loosened to the point I had the captain of the boat take a look at it, and he agreed that the reel wasn't operating properly. I brought the reel back to charkbait yesterday. The employees tested it using a scale and also agreed that the drag was rapidly loosening as the reel was used. However, they told me that it wasn't their problem and I would have to return it to Cedros for repair. I explained that I am going on a trip next week and would need the reel and asked if they could swap it out for a new one, or at least open it up and see if it was an easy fix. I thought this was fair since I bought a defective reel from their store less than two months prior. They kept saying the same thing, that it wasn't their problem and there was nothing they would do. Needing to get my reel fixed, I drove over to the longfin to have it looked at. Even though I didn't buy the reel from these guys, they looked at it for me. They talked to their Okuma rep who picked up the reel and promised to have it back to the longfin early next week so I can have it for my trip. I wonder why charkbait refused to do something so simple as spending 5 minutes talking to a rep. They didn't have a single customer in the store while I was there. Another gripe with charkbait: I had spectra and mono spoiled onto the Cedros reel by those guys. While fighting the second fish of the trip, the mono broke off of the spectra and I could tell that the break was at the knot between the two. I don't know if they didn't take the time to cinch the knot down because of laziness or they just aren't good at knot tying. Also, I mentioned earlier that I am new to the area. I recently moved from the east coast where we do not have the live bait supply of the west coast and, thus, typically troll for most of our fish. After explaining this to the charkbait during my first visit and asking a lot of questions about knot tying, they acted in a demeaning manner to me. I wrote it off as them being grumpy or in a bad mood, but now I know that they just have terrible customer service. read more

This spot gets a 3 star for me. Workers are cool. Selection is good. My issue is that I was sold their 544 jig in a specific color for deep water fishing (crab red) for tuna. I Get on the boat and am told that's this specific shops top water lure that only they make. Well that sucks. Since I bought 4 for me, my girl and my buddy. Well let's just see if we can take them back. **Note that after we found these were top waters we didn't use them to hopefully return them** I go in and the Owner is there. So we explain our deal about buying them by mistake via bad info by them. Then he tells us "Nope, unless you have the receipt." I explain these we bought out of a mistake cause we were told they for yoyo jigging by them. Not really our fault. Maybe we can meet in the middle and I can at least try and exchange them for a different color better for top water so technically they don't lose money and still get the business. He says "Nope no receipt, can't help you." Owner is just smug and not helpful or understanding at all. He seems like a cool guy. But this is a shit way to run a business customer service wise. Take your business to big fish in PCH and seal beach. I've never gotten anything but awesome from them. Info, bait and customer service. Especially from the big Mexican guy and older Asian guy. F this shop all because of their BS return policy and the no f*** given attitude by the owner about helping us, or at least try. Cause now I'm stuck with 4 useless $9 top water jigs in a crap color cause they gave us bad advice. read more

This is my kind of tackle shop. Max, Jeff, and the owner, Mark, always set me up properly, cutting no corners and saving me a buck where and when it counts! Whether it's setting up a new reel, picking up one of their custom red (new) Accurates in stock, or digging through their aisles of great lures, jigs, unopened stock, rods, or terminal tackle... Charkbait is hands-down my favorite tackle shop in Orange County. You can always order on the Internet and pick up in-store, and I've never had a problem with their ordering system or their pricing. The boys will also always work out a great deal for you if you saw something advertised somewhere else for less. Something should be said about the owner, Mark, who made a big impression on me since day one when he set me up for my long range and 2-5 day trips, and I have been a loyal customer ever since. Max is always super helpful, and Jeff has also set-up quite a few Newell reels for me... Just ask him for "the silencer" and the "double carbon drag" special - he does amazing work! They are also my favorite vendor to check out every year at the Fred Hall Show, and have a ton of great manufacturers that they carry in the vendor booth with them, offering advice and selling tackle on the cheap! I went to two fishing shops today (Sav-On in Santa Fe Springs & Charkbait in Huntington Beach) and had two different experiences. Sav-On was not totally bad, but the chick (Amy) that "greeted" me at the door with, "You have about 10 minutes before we close", coupled with their higher prices, and low stock for what I was looking for (Hopkins spoon), left me with a slightly dissatisfied vibe. Dave and Jimmy were cool/helpful as usual though. I then went to Charkbait, as Sav-On was limited in their stock, and was immediately greeted by Beta and Blake. Mind you, I got there with 30 minutes until closing, and not once did they mention anything about time, or the place closing. They asked me if I needed help with anything and I told them I was cool, and walked around the shop. I ended up asking for help when I didn't see what I was looking for, and Blake located the Hopkins spoon that I had walked by twice already. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was $2.00 less than at Sav-On, and struck up GREAT conversation with Beta and Blake. The knowledge I gained from those two guys was stuff that I'd pay to get at a seminar. Beta took time to share tips on fishing lingcod, and showed me how to rig a snell hook with a stinger. He also spoke about strategies while targeting the "Lingasaurs", as well as ways to save money while doing so. Blake shared some local spots to fish, as well as the setups to use. He also brainstormed with me , as we attempted to remember the name of a giant tube-type lure, that they unfortunately no longer carried. But the time that he took trying to remember the name and that Beta took searching online went above and beyond. I am SO happy that I decided to rush down to Charkbait before closing. All in all, I ended up being there 35 minutes past closing, chatting it up about fishing and getting a personal seminar. Beta & Blake ROCK, and the prices are as good as they get! I've had negative experiences in the past with a rep that I no longer see on their website, as he was always kinda arrogant, rude and to put it bluntly, an ass. Even with that I'd shop Charkbait, but I'd try to limit my interactions with him so that I wouldn't get pissed. This was a whole new experience, and one that will get me coming back over and over. I have been shopping at both the H.B. and S.D. locations and am very happy with their knowledge, selection, and service. The first time I came in (about a year ago) was to re-spool a reel before a long range trip, and I was nervous as I had my son (5) and nephew (2) with me. Not only did they re-spool the reel quickly, they also had the kids playing with the swim baits and gave me great tips on making fishing more fun for the kids. I was concerned about a travel rod that I had broken recently. It had broken above the handle with line that was rated well below the rod's capacity. I brought it back and explained what happened and the associate agreed that it was most likely a manufacturer defect and took what was left of the rod to let the owner see. I got a call a few days later and they replaced the rod at no additional charge. I came to pick it up about 1/2 hour before they closed and wound up swapping stories and joking with the guys over an hour after the store closed. I continue to be impressed by Charkbait and the quality of service from their associates. read more

First off I have never been here in person but I'm sure this applies to the in store service as well. I have ordered both online and through the phone. This place is by far the best online tackle shop there is. I tried tackle direct (being from nj I was trying to support nj business.) and had a very bad experience but I will make a separate review for that. Everything I ordered came super fast and in great condition. The prices are great and they offer price match. The costumer service over the phone is the best I have had with any retailer. The last time I called I had a question about a fishing rod and not only did the sales person recommend one that fit my needs better it cost less then the original one I was looking at. I like it when store employees look at the customers needs over trying to sell the most expensive items. After he helped me with the rod he also helped me with some fishing tips about using Braided fishing line with a leader. I am shocked at the level of dishonesty and inappropriate behavior at this business. Charging my credit card without my permission! And when I call the owner to make it right he hangs up on me. Here are the facts - I ordered lobster hoops on Black Friday and got a discount. The owner E-Mailed me a receipt and told me that I got a great buy. Then I get the bill and they added 75 dollars on my credit card - WITHOUT MY PERMISS ION. So I called Leeana in billing and she says thats the way they handle it when some of the stuff that people buy is discounted by mistake! So let me get this straight - I agree to one amount and hit purchase and they use my private and personal credit card info to just charge me a new amount that I did not authorize. So I called the owner and it gets better. He says if I dont like the new amount he will cancel the order. Then he hangs up on me. I'm disputing the bill on my credit card, filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and calling the District Attorneys Business Fraud Division to see if I have any recourse. Can't say enough good things about this shop. They are truly a local small business and do source out their own products which surpasses or is comparable to existing named products. In this hobby, the truth is always told, "you get what you pay for." So far here, I've gotten more than what I've paid for. The local knowledge is good, more than welcoming.
