Yes, I continue to receive emailed advertisements from Big 5 Sporting Goods. With summer's heat and grandkids outings where swimming in pools is more frequent, we thought of getting some squirt gun toys for playing in the pool. Some really cool items were on the flyer and we went in for a look. The store was not that busy and we were able to find different models as well as the associated dollar values. I continued searching for the items advertised and finally found them toward the back of the section for water related product. Great, and we got a couple of the advertised different models. I was also intrigued by summer wear like I saw advertised. However, I was not really impressed with what I saw. Perhaps another time. At the checkout counter I showed Georgie my emailed 10% discount. She honored the discounts and I'm now happy with continuing getting the colorful Big 5 Sporting Goods advertisements. read more

Giving 4 stars instead of 5. Asked an employee about compression shorts and he walked me over to where several different brands were all throughout the store. He was super helpful. The girl cashier not so much. Asked if any of what I was purchasing was on sale and she was too busy directing someone who had just walked in as to where a certain item was and didn't even ask me what I had said. She bagged my things and didn't say thank you or any kind of a thankful greeting. I could have easily bought these on Amazon but wanted to support a local business. As someone who has worked in customer service for the past four years, I know it's not hard to be a decent person. Tawana was rude and short when we used an online coupon to purchase a canopy. When my boyfriend asked if it was possible to use an additional coupon, she rudely cut him off with "No, nope, no," before he could finish asking the question. And even when he tried to pay with cash, she angrily pressed the red button on the pin pad. Buying ammo here is a nightmare because the background check took about 20 mins and compare to other big 5 stores, which usually takes 5 mins. They double checked my id and they doubled check if I am using my own debt card by matching my name, which I had never experienced before buying ammo. I feel like I was discriminate because of my race. I would not recommend coming to this location for purchasing ammo. Also they were trying to charge me another $1 for background check because I wanted the same brand, the same amount of ammo but in a different box count. read more

Always loved going to Big 5. They've got everything for sports and the outdoors from sunglasses to sleeping bags. They've got basketballs to backpacks. Soccer shin guards to random things like Squishmallow stuffed animals. Ever since they closed the Big 5 by Westminster Mall I think this is the closest one to my home. People seemed friendly. The store was fairly busy even though the parking lot was only half full. Disclaimer: There is a LOT of stuff so you may need to be ready for a scavenger hunt. For every 5 amazing people who work here, you have a power hungry supervisor who goes by the name Carlos. Carlos must have studied under Stalin because he conducts the store like a military general in the center of a hostile takeover. If you're not exactly in line, under the line sign, he prefers to call you out and banish you from the store, literally inviting you to leave. In store flooded by clearance, sale, and other textual signs, he scoffs at you for not spending every minute as a guest in his kingdom memorizing the placement of signage and obscure rules. I'm just happy I got to purchase my shoes without upsetting Carlos to the point of amputation. read more

I have tried about 5 different times to buy ammo at this location and I always get an excuse for them not to sell to me. "Manager is out to lunch", manager is out for the rest of the day, im not certified to sell ammo, etc. I really wish higher management would look into this as that store is missing out on ammo sales revenue. I would like to personally thank this Huntington Beach store for my awesome binoculars! I went to this store with my son to purchase a pair of binoculars yesterday afternoon. We walked in. Saw the ones we were interested in ( they are locked in a display cabinet behind the counter). So we waited by the register for assistance. This young man with a Big 5 name tag came to the counter. Gave us the once over glance. Didn't acknowledge us (e.g May I help you. Someone will be right with. Hello.). Did something at the cash register. Then walked away. Without even uttering a word to us. My son looked at me and said, "Wait a minute. Did he just blow us off?" Yep. He sure did. So we walked out and saw this individual hovering by the checkout lines, which gives me the impression that he is either a manager or assistant manager. Alright. So we drove 13 miles to the Long Beach store on PCH. We spotted the same binoculars that we wanted to check out at the HB store. In less than a half minute, Daniel (LB store) calls out to us, "Hello. Are you in need of assistance?" I replied yes and let him know what we came in for. "I'll be right there. I will need to retrieve the keys to unlock the display." Daniel let me examine the binoculars for comparison. We made a decision and completed our transaction in less than 7 minutes. Daniel made us feel welcomed. Daniel gets it. You are not just selling sporting goods. Your selling a customer experience. And, thanks to this HB store, we found an enjoyable experience at another location with Daniel and we are willing to make that 13-mile drive for future purchases. I am leaving this store a 2-star review, instead of a 1-star, on the off chance that this individual at the HB store was having a bad day. But your negative vibes or experience should never pour into your customer's experience. Hence, I am going to leave the Long Beach store a 5-star rating and enjoy our new binoculars! read more

Advertised that ammo is available up until 45 minutes before closing (which is understandable). The bad review is because they wouldn't sell me ammo when I was here at 7pm and they close @ 830. So be warned they will not sell ammo an hour and a half prior to closing. Still with your policy if you're going to create one. read more

Been shopping here for years. I've always seemed to get surprised at finding really great things for good prices, for such a small store they have alot of good stuff. Recently been surprised by finding the best pair of boardshorts I've ever had (all black bodyglove) and they were even on sale half off. A decent baseball mitt, great price... a decent inflator, great price, grey fishing boots, same. The list goes on. I do not recommend going here. I had 2 $5 off $20 or more coupons they would not honor for golf balls. The list of exclusions is in tiny print and literally includes about 20 different items. So, instead of two packs of golf balls I decided to get one. The ring up price was double what was listed from where I picked them up. One box may have been misplaced, but the other had 6 of the exact same balls behind them, and they still would not honor the listed price. I suggest going elsewhere. As I was leaving the store, this 450 lb lady was entering the store, and she stood there and blocked my way w/ her arm and won't let me thru. Horrible customer service by the manager Brianna! Went in there to purchase propane tanks. They had 2- 2 packs cans and 4- individual cans left. The individual cans were a $1.00 more vs. buying the 2 packs. I know, not a lot of money, but to lose a customer who shops there all the time over $2.00 blew me away! I asked if I bought the 4 individual cans if she could charge me for 2 - 2 packs which would be a $1.00 less each and the manager Brianna said "no"! Exactly the same product but not attached as a 2 pack. With brick & mortar stores becoming extinct, because of Amazon, e- commerce retail etc. I couldn't believe she wouldn't take care of the customer. I used to be a fan of Big 5. It used to be a sporting goods store. I will still take it over Dick's sporting goods (which is a golf and clothing shop), except they do have a serious supply of fishing stuff. But in this Big 5, I'm sorry, but 1 small row of fishing items, and a very small gun display, and limited ammunition choices hardly qualify this place as a "sporting goods" store. Plenty of clothes racks here though, and shoes. They seem to have a very limited quantity of everything except clothes and shoes. read more

July 29th, 2021, the worst day of my life. I called the store eager and of full life ready to spend my hard-earned money on their products. I called and spoke to Ish about soccer balls, shoes, clothes, fish bait, fishing poles, beanie boos and much more. At first he was very helpful, I even felt a connection between us, a friendship was brewing. Things quickly turned sour when he began refusing his sworn right to assist my needs. He assertively told me he could no longer help me over the phone. He belittled me, and made me feel inadequate. I started tearing up as he laid into me. I tried my best to reason with him hoping he could just help me decide what to purchase but as the call continued his harsh words drowned me like a waterfall. Gasping for air, I could not escape his wraith. I sit here now crying, mourning, what could have been between us. What started as a dream slowly became a deep dark nightmare. Don't come here if you need take the FSC exam which is required before you purchase a gun. Was told a couple of weeks ago come in and they would be happy to give me the exam - come back now and they refuse to give the exam unless you are buying a gun at the same time. I like that the store is not huge and overwhelming like other sporting good stores. Good prices and selection, and I like to take advantage of their frequent coupons. This last time, customer service went above and beyond-a sales attendant (named Hung?) was extremely helpful and patient in helping my teenage daughter find the most comfortable pair of soccer shoes, and he also spend a good amount of time with my youngest daughter to find the perfect backpack for middle school (she chose Jansport). Terrible customer service! Came in to buy a boxing bag for my garage and accessories. Asked for help from girl at register, she told the guy for me. I saw him help all the people with their shoes as I waited patiently, but then he disappeared. I waited some more, then just gave up. There was no communication that he was busy after the girl told him I requested assistance, nothing. He was just standing in the front at register talking to the girl there. So I went to Walmart online and spent over $200 on the same items and got free shipping. Son needed some tennis shoes and I didn't want to battle any of the mall parking lots. So, off we went to Big 5 Sporting Goods. We get there and the parking lot is FULL because Five Guys Burgers & Fries is located in the same strip mall. We had to circle the lot a couple of times before finding a space. Be careful in the parking lot because there are a lot of inpatient teens who are in a hurry to eat at the new burger joint. I only go to Big 5 for my son's tennis shoes. They usually have sales on New Balance, Nike, and other brands. If you want a good deal on tennis shoes, go to Big 5. If you're looking for great customer service, ambiance and couldn't care less about prices, go to Sports Chalet. The people working at Big 5 are not enthusiastic about their jobs. I'm fine with the mediocre service as long as they get my son's shoes and are not purposely rude. I got a good deal on a pair of Asics Gel tennis shoes, regularly $64.99 and on sale for $39.99. One of the last standing regional sporting goods stores in SoCal and for good reason. They sell their goods at a reasonable and fair price unlike some of the other stores and that's why they are going out of business. You won't find the hi-end, top of the line here at Big 5. But what you will find is a great selection and fast, friendly customer service. I picked up a pair of rubber boots for an upcoming seafood fest expedition. My girlfriend picked up a pair of waterproof boots for the boat. I love shopping at this location and I will be back again soon. Thanks to Big John for his humorous and friendly service. read more

A decent selection of running shoes, and whenever they are on sale , a deal not a boutique sports store. But for the kids sporting needs , it fits the bill. Sock selection has improved and made the shoe purchase longer than necessary, as i had to ascertain what sock was right to put some mileage on and for what price point. As With all the stores they have everything jammed so tightly in there. It helps to know what u need, and a clear vision, else you could easily be overcome by the haphazard stacking and displays. But you don't shop aesthetics here. Just a bargain on your kids latest sporting spend. Hopefully they'll actually want to play for the whole season read more

The staff working the registers at 8:45pm tonight were beyond rude. When racing not strolling into the store we were not greeted with a hello, rather than a "you have fifteen minutes..." They will gladly take my 80.00 for baseball equipment for my son but when I ask to use the restroom they told me it's for employees only.
