We've used Chapman Bros. for several electrical jobs and they've been fantastic. They contract out to independent electricians and we've been very lucky that they've sent over great people. Also, Chapman Bros. offers a service plan with discounts and a guarantee on the work no matter who they send over, which is great for our old house. For non-electrical work, don't even bother. We had our hot water heater break at 5:30am today. I called them three times and every time it was "oh we'll find someone and call you back in 30 minutes", "we'll call you in 15", etc. It's now 12:15 and no one has called me lol read more

1-Star Review I had an awful experience with Champion Brothers in Cranford and want to save others the headache. They originally tried to overcharge my wife with an outrageous quote. When I challenged the price, they suddenly "renegotiated," which was already a huge red flag. It didn't stop there. They ended up using parts from my own home instead of providing their own, yet still charged as if everything came from them. The work itself was poorly done, rushed, and nowhere near professional quality. I asked to speak with a manager, and now we're on day two with no response at all. The lack of communication and accountability is unacceptable. I do not recommend this company. I took detailed before-and-after photos, and the results speak for themselves. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!! I hired Chapman Bros. 13 months ago in October '24 to repair my leaking shower and paid $6600 out of pocket for the repair. They decided to replace the liner and re-tile. The shower is leaking again, and because it's November '25 and has been more than 12 months they won't warranty the work. When I hired the company the previous owner Bill was the one who did the work, and since last year Bill retired and the company was acquired by private equity. Bill might have warrantied his work, but now I guess I'm out of luck. Avoid them like the plague, they couldn't care less about their customers anymore. read more

I found them on Elizabethtown Gas referral website as the gas company does not service customers. I called the company to service my boiler and they would not service unless I signed a one year contract for $160. So they came out on 11-24 and the technician was extremely rude. He said he was going to condemn and shut down my gas. He said don't call them back and will cancel my contract. Now I am a senior woman and was mortified by his behavior and couldn't believe he represented Chapman Bros. I immediately called PSE&G fir them to come out and they came within 3 hours. Found no reason for the gas to be shut off and wasn't surprised to hear this company was here. I was so upset and they calmed me down. Next day I received an estimate for a new boiler for $18,900. I talked to a representative from their company on 11-26 and told her how rude I was talked to a d she said she would handle it. I told her I want a refund of my one year service contract as I will never use them again. She would be in touch. Well she never got in touch with me and I have called her stating I want the service contract canceled and a refund. I have never heard back from her. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Pipe had rusted through above the ceiling in the basement. Chapman got Super Plumber Michael over within hours. But as the repair work was a several hour project, we preferred that he return the next day. He replaced the entire original lengthy rusted pipe with truly minimal (12 square inch) entry into the ceiling). When he left, the work area was immaculate. I have relied on Chapman for the 2 to 3 decades. Chapman is not cheap, but the competence and and quality of their work well outweighs a few dollars more than the low ball quotes from others. read more

We had 4 HVAC company come in to give estimates and 3 were good while Chapman was a total waste of time. Who they sent was incompetent, lazy, condescending, and likely sexist. The other 3 companies were here for 30-60 mins each; checking out the system inside and out, taking measurements & pics, talking about the different models and makes and 2 gave us proper and thorough estimates within 48 hours- 1 is getting it by tomorrow where as Chapman has sent nothing. the 2 were in the same industry standard pricing. The person sent out by Chapman was here for 5-10 mins compared to the 30 mins plus of the other companies. He was incredibly rude, lazy, and had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. He would not talk to me without being dismissive cause a man was present and it seems he only wanted to speak to him- tho I, a female, am in charge of the project and told him this. his incompetence was not flying with me and I was questioning it all having enough knowledge on the subject to understand everything he said did not align with my research, the other professionals who I had spoken to extensively and have 2 of 3 estimates from, or the building inspector who I talk to frequently about the projects. He wouldn't answer my questions but rather spoke about completely different things which were telling of how lazy and incompetent he was. What a waste of time. This was a person who does not want to do the estimate correctly never mind the job. His attitude would never follow through on customer service or go the extra mile and make sure it was done proper and he would have been miserable to work with cause he had no communication skills or expertise. Let us preface our review by saying we have an older home which had very specific needs and limited space to work with. It should also be noted that all of these projects needed to be precisely timed around a concurrent foundation repair (I-beams encased in concrete being placed along all of the walls in our basement). Over this past year, Chapman Brothers completed the following repairs for us: -conversion from oil to gas heat (steam oil boiler to gas combi unit - all in one boiler/water heater) -oil tank/water heater removal -steam pipe removal along all walls in the basement -removal of steam pipes and conversion to pex water lines to all radiators throughout our home -chimney liner install -complete air conditioner/condenser replacement/associated electrical work -duct repair -sewer line replacement -2 sump pump replacements (1 with complete battery back up system and pipe repair) -plumbing for washing machine relocation -water main pressure regulator and shut off valve replacement -gas line relocation to accommodate the angle irons needed for the foundation repair -sill cock replacements ...and I probably forgot a thing or two... Reliability, communication and punctuality were key to working alongside the foundation repair company, gas company, water company and town - all while allowing us to keep our sanity through such a big repair. The concurrent foundation repair made this a complicated and unique project to begin with, and our living in the home with a 1.5yr old while all this was going on just made it that much more interesting. For example, most of the plumbing needed to be temporarily installed before putting in the final piping, so we could live in our home while this all went on. Chapman went out of their way to make this happen with no interruptions in gas/water/waste removal service. Also, ultimately all the plumbing/gas lines needed to be run around or over the i-beams placed along the walls-but neatly-so we didn't waste too much space because we were refinishing the basement again. Some work needed to be slightly altered and redone after we hit some "bumps in the road" with our other repairs. Annoying but true, and without hesitation or complaint, Chapman redid the things we needed redone. We had a 1.5yr old running around and they worked around and humored him every chance they had. Needless to say, there were a lot of factors that made our project anything but easy for anyone. But Bill, Tom and team did everything they could make all of this as easy as possible. They were thorough, organized, productive, clean, punctual, patient, reasonable, flexible, and most importantly honest and kind. Their attention to detail still impresses us. Who knew plumbing could be so clean and organized?! Melissa in the office was also really great with scheduling - super organized, patient and accommodating, it helped with all of the coordination involved with the project. The clever ways the guys found to work with what we had with was impressive / in-and-of itself. Further, these guys didn't come in here trying to sell any fancy fixes or promise us the world. They came with obvious years of experience and, frankly, just helped us make everything work the best way it could for us and our specific situation. There's something to be said about having a job done correctly, but it's something totally different being able to say you had it done right the first time (Any homeowner who has had subpar work done knows exactly what I mean by this.). Bill and his team became a huge part of our lives over this past year and we respect them and their work more than we can say. These guys had countless hours of work ahead of them yet never hesitated to stop and answer a question we had or offer a suggestion on a way to make our project work better and within our budget. They were punctual, used their time wisely and productively, yet didn't rush in and out carelessly. What I think is even more important to emphasize is that I can honestly say I trust chapman brothers. As a homeowner I would typically feel vulnerable saying that about a contractor, but not for a second when it comes to Chapman. They are good, honest people who show absolute pride and craftsmanship in their work. They have something many people don't; years of skill and experience under their belts along with pride in their work. They aren't rushing around to make the next dollar. They do quality work and find themselves with clients for life. They are most definitely experts in their field. Needless to say, my family and I will be lifetime clients of chapman brothers and will continue to refer them to everyone we know. read more

Would never recommend again! Nick/plumber showed up with a "chin guard" not even a mask and required requests to wear a mask the proper way. Melissa, the phone intake Operator was rude and argumentative. One star for the office who personnel who was a poor communicator, verging on rudeness at times. If the office personnel cannot give you any idea how long service will be to install an air conditioner after the deposit was paid, I just don't understand how this could happen other than not caring about your job. The technicians showed up and were very polite and professional. Kudos to them. But due to the unpleasantness we encountered with the office person I cannot give a higher rating. We called Chapman Bros. Plumbing and Heating on Tuesday afternoon, and were given an appointment for the very next morning. Our tub diverter had given out due to hard water buildup and we could not take a shower. They sent the nicest young man who went to work immediately and before replacing it gave us an itemized cost, with new part. He signed in at just before ten and signed out at 20 minutes after....that time included driving back to the shop and picking up a brushed nickel part that matched our other pieces. Part was then replaced and calked beautifully and we were good to go. Not only were we delighted with the work, the price was one third of what we were quoted over the phone by Cranford Plumbing and told it could be a 3 hour job to boot! Made an appointment making it clear to them that I needed a valve for my gas fireplace. The valve was not accepting the flow of gas needed to light the burner and flame. After explaining, they said they could come and install the valve. I asked if they would be able to do it that day and they said yes, the guys should have it on their truck. Great. He arrives, doesn't even touch the fireplace, and tells me they would have to order the valve! I then asked for pricing on the parts & labor. He calls his boss and the bosses message was "we don't do that." Maybe call an appliance repair company. BUT WAIT, they charged me $69 TO DO NOTHING! read more

Chapman reached out to me 12 hours after I posted my review so I'm updating my original post. They explained that the part for my tub really was on a 10 week back order - fine, but my main issue was the lack of communication. They also explained that the overcharge on parts was due to their 5 year warranty on service and parts that is included on their work. This was never communicated with me at the appointment. After getting off the phone call, I checked the fine print of the work order/receipt and nowhere was any kind of warranty mentioned. Besides, I'd rather have been given the option to pay for a warranty and not be charged 5 times the market rate for parts. I understand a business needs to make money, but for a 15 minute job to cost what it did seems insane. That being said, I can't say Chapman is any more or less expensive than their competitors, and I'll take some of the responsibility for agreeing to pay an excessive amount for such a simple job. Since they had a rapid response to my original review, I have no complaints about their actual service and they've offered a refund of the $69 service charge to make amends, I'm giving them a a slightly better grade. read more

When I took my shower this morning I discovered that my 40-gallon gas water heater died last night and it was under 20 degrees outside. Right away I called contractors that I knew and hit the directories too. Chapman called back promptly and agreed to send someone out for $69 to give me a quote. The tech called me and asked what kind of unit I currently had and put a replacement unit on the truck. The quality of their work was excellent. They dropped protective plastic on my floors and stairs to keep everything clean from tracking in winter salt outside. I work at home and I'm on conference calls all day. The Tech Anthony / Nick didn't want to disturb and completed the installation without reviewing the quote with me. The quality of work was very high but I was not comfortable with the price and hadn't been given a quote as promised. This morning I called about my concern. Bill called me back after he had spoken with Anthony and was very professional. We came to a mutual agreement and all is good. The quality of their work and the professionalism of their people is as high as you can get and Bill demonstrated that Chapman Bros stands behind their work and reputation. . read more

Reached out the same day, and by the next day John was at our front door. We discovered the issues and needed to break floor for new plumbing repair. First, we called Chapman to quote us on some minor plumbing repairs that were non-emergency. They sent an HVAC guy which was shocking and a bit concerning for us. More importantly, Chapman Bros are very dishonest in their pricing. We were told their service fee was covered, yet they added it on at the end. We asked them pricing to for a repair on a piece of equipment and the answer was "we dont divulge that information. Labor, parts and warranty are included in the cost." They overcharge drastically and are very non-transparent which is concerning for us using them for the first time. Will absolutely not use them again. The representative Melissa on the phone was extremely pushy, would not give us time to discuss on using them or not, and literally said "I will give you two minutes to make a decision on getting the part fixed before I send the rep out to get the service fee paid from you." They charge this fee either way. This company was used by others in our area years back but we are very very disappointed with service and the inflated costs. Bad experience. Note, the pricing they charged was ~$500 more than what others were quoting but since they were referred and were here to provide a quote, we felt forced to use them. The guy servicing said I am going out to get the product. We asked for price, he wouldnt answer. We called the company, they said we cant provide that. He came back and after he completed the project, he re-added the service charge back on. Do NOT use them. Unfriedndly and dishonest. They did finally say only 1 year warranty. Folks in the business of service should provide just that, quality service because there are many other competitors out there. Sorry Chapman, you will keep losing customers (and not retaining those who try you out for the first time when your staff is extremely agressive and dishonest.) I look forward to working with other Plumbing/HVAC workers as I am sure none will provide an experience as sour as this. Update: The manager called minutes after I posted this review on here and asked for me to take this post down. They did not ask us why we felt the service was inferior, offer any price reductions, or even say sorry for a poor experience. They called and said this review was unfair, that the pandemic is forcing companies like theirs to increase costs, that this posting was not honest and that they rushed us because they had the contractor at the store and could not give us five minutes to call them back. I wish they called to apologize or provide an effort to improve their customer service but instead they chose to tell us we were wrong and this whole thing was a misunderstanding and they would appreciate it if we took this review down. They claimed that we were wrong when we were told the service fee would be taken off the total and that she would send us the phone records of our conversation with them to prove we as customers were wrong. How professional. We were also finally given the price of the part $450 during this call, and were charged over a grand, so 20 minutes of labor and 1 year warranty was $600. We had used Chapman Brothers for years. They tend to do a great job, and Billy is wonderful. However, over the last few years, their service (especially in the office) has not been a positive experience. Also, they have started to nickel and dime more than ever. We are going elsewhere after we were told a service would cost one price and then they tried to charge us more to complete the job. As excellent clients for many years, who have never had an issue with paying on time (many, many thousands of dollars) I was extremely disappointed by their rudeness. Even if it was a misunderstanding, it should have been handled very differently. We have stayed over the years for loyalty to Bill, however, they made it clear they do not value the business of long term clients. Onward as life is too short, and there are plenty of other excellent plumbers around. read more

Chapman Brothers have been a lifesaver for us. Our furnace gave out in peak summer and we knew we had time before we needed to install it for winter so we got quotes from a bunch of contractors. Chapman Brothers were not the cheapest but the knowledge and experience that Tom brought was second to none. As luck would have it, we ended up needing to do the installation much earlier because of an upcoming new arrival in the family. Tom and his team were amazing - dropclothes everywhere and tidied up the place after. A couple of days after installation, the new machine turned off. Quick text message to Tom and he turned up in less than 10 minutes to follow up. He dropped by on consecutive days, always messaging before just to check up and make sure everything was working. We've had a couple of technicians over since then for various items and they've all been on time, courteous and professional. They explain what the issue is clearly. Top notch professionals. They installed a brand new central air unit and converted my house from electric heat to gas. I talked to 14, yes, 14 different vendors, but decided with Tom and his team. They clearly explained everything they needed to do and did it right. As far as communication, I called their answering service for an issue that was not related to the new system they installed. My pluming issue was a smelly shower and the technician was able to quickly determine the source of the problem (the drain). I did encounter some issues related to scope of work and cost but Judy was able to rectify this with prompt and considerate communication. We had Chapman Bros install a mini split air conditioning system in our home earlier this summer. After meeting a few different companies for quotes, we decided on Chapman. They weren't the cheapest option but they seemed the most professional and honest of everyone we met with- they also offered the best warranty out of the other companies. We're so glad we went with them- everything was finished within one day and passed all the inspections with flying colors. They aren't the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. These guys have been a lifesaver for me since I moved into my new home. Do I wish it didn't cost $70 to just walk in my house, of course. But think about all the bulls**t calls they avoid from people who freak out over every little thing that happens in their home. Chapman came to my House quoted me a price for a fan motor replacement of $451 to $758 and also charged me a $69 service fee. My family was in the Heating Business for 80 years in Manhattan and I could do the work myself. I looked up the part number on the interment and could buy one for $159 at the most myself. So I figure $400 to $500 is high but fair for the right job. Everyone is entitled to make an honest living. It was literally a 4 bolt and job and should not take more than 1 hour to complete test and retest. But things did not go as I anticipated. The tech showed up 1/2 later than I was told and the Chapman was rude to my wife on the phone when she called wondering where he was. They claim the part cost $210 and charged me $742 in total. Since Chapman spent less than 2 hours in my home. I think the cost and the horrendous attitude to my wife was unprofessional. Chapman used to be a good shop and I cannot recommend them any longer. Bill, the owner, worked with us to come up with a solution for our project and quickly provided a reasonable written estimate. He even performed a lot of the work and oversight himself. I had a bunch of work done with Chapman, both big and small projects, and love working with them. They are big enough to tackle the large jobs but also has the small company feel as both owners, Bill & Tom, were hands on doing some of the work. Their Straight Forward pricing is legitimate, not just marketing fluff, and only got charged what I was quoted. I felt they even when above and beyond and didn't try to nickle & dime me for things they did that we didn't specifically discuss beforehand and their pricing was very reasonable. The final product was not only functional but they also focused on the aesthetics as well and left the job site cleaner than they found it. I was in regular communication with Melissa who was great at helping coordinate next steps and timing. I will continue to use them for any future plumbing projects! read more

I am highly disappointed with Chapman brothers. They came to my home last week for a repair. Took about 30 minutes. The plumber couldn't even carry his own snake in because it had a flat wheel. He ended up using a handsnake.. 30 mins later, needless to say $500 and it still leaks water in my basement. I called today a total of 3 times to request repair and I have yet to hear back from the plumber as I sit here home with my newborn baby. Chapman brothers are unreliable and unprofessional. My wife was told my Chapman's reps that the $70 fee for coming out would be credited against any work that was done. That was lie. After reviewing the bill and not seeing the credit we called them to dispute the bill and they told us that they always charge the $70. I plan on making a BBB complaint as well. read more

A year ago Chapman Brothers put in a new furnace and air conditioner. the price was competitive as I got 3 quotes. The crew came with Tom, they were extremely efficient, clean and thoughtful. the unit they recommended runs great and I am saving money and energy. On Friday night late this holiday weekend, I found my hot water heater flooding my finished basement, and the pipe unable to be turned off. I called my worry free PSEG and after 20 min on "you will be the next call" no answer, I called Chapman, Bill called back immediately and said he would come over, less than 10 min. later he was there after 10 pm. The following morning at 8 am he was there to install a new hot water heater, he also fixed another unrelated pipe he noticed, that 3 previous plumbers could not, he was finished by 10:30am. In addition he gave the name of PuroClean in Cranford to help me with the residual damage, I called and Dave came Memorial Day weekend and could not have been nicer. I highly recommend Chapman Brothers, they are reliable, considerate, fair and available whenever you need them.
