We sat at the bar and became quick friends with Kiwi, the bartender. He was personable, fun, and mixed the dranks! I'll say it every time...the bartenders make the bar and keep people coming back. On top of being great mixologist. We DJ came and started spinning tunes that had me dancing in my seat. We were vibing and looked at the clock and realized we were an hr late. Honestly, we went in there on a very rainy Saturday night and the place is absolutely gorgeous. We were shown a table, but we did not stay. I would have enjoyed a couple of cocktails here, but the music was so loud it would have been impossible to have conversation with my companion so we had to leave. Absolutely beautiful speakeasy adjacent to a servicing church. The ambiance and decor of this place is a whimsical dream and I enjoyed the entrance which included coat check. We were led through a curtain that opened up into the grand space, with the focus being on the stunning bar and chandelier. The music playing was soft and suited the ambiance. The candles add a great touch! We sat at the bar and the bartender was super helpful in explaining the drinks and helping us order off menu. There's a variety of seating from couch style tables to a good amount of bar seating and even confessional style booths for private parties. I visited on a rainy Thursday night and there was a fair amount of customers. I can see this spot getting pretty packed on a weekend or being great for private events. I really wanted to come here for a long time and I'm sad to hear that is closing soon! I was able to grab a reservation for 9:30pm in a Tuesday evening and am so glad I did. The inside of the chapel is really really cool. They did a great job of designing it and making it an experience. Service was pretty good - very standard for a nice bar (though it wasn't very busy, so your experience may differ) Drinks were pretty good. My wife loved hers (can't remember what it was) and I had the espresso martini-type of drink with rum. I don't even know where to begin with my amazing experience at Chapel Bar! I hosted my birthday party there with a 20+ party reservation. Throughout the process, the coordinator was extremely responsive via email. The minute we walked in, everyone was so kind and made sure we were well taken care of. The DJ came up to me and asked if we had any song/genre preferences. The bartenders were upbeat and offered a free birthday shot. Our server made sure to check in throughout the night for drinks for our party and kept me updated with meeting our minimum. They allowed us to bring a cake earlier that day, helped fix it up, put candles in it, brought it out, and then cut/served it. I wish I got everyone's names but based on my experience I can only imagine this level of service is the standard for Chapel Bar. Thank you for making my party so much fun! read more

This was a private bar. You have to be invited to attend. The service was impeccable with mixologists. They made drinks from the menu or from scratch based on your desire. Small, intimate bar that is located in an old church adjacent to the Fotografiska museum. The space is actually much smaller than the pics make it out to be. The setting is definitely gorgeous inside the chapel. They have table service for those who have seating, otherwise can order at the bar. I do agree with @Nicole H. though - wish they had seats at the bar counter. Cocktails are decent, but on the higher end of NYC prices (mid 20s). They have a private room off to the side that can be reserved. Definitely a bit of an older crowd (the staff are probably the youngest people in there) - not surprising given the place is essentially only open to Patron members of the Fotografiska (which is like $2K/year). However can come as a guest of a member. I think it'd be a nice place to hang out if I need a place with noise level acceptable to have a conversation. Seats/tables are preferred over standing here. Cool place to check out on occasion, but probably wouldn't be on a destination list if looking for the best cocktails in the city. read more

The short: wanted this to be an incredible bar, but really rude service and sticky glasses ruin the experience. The longer: we came on a Friday night knowing we'd have to wait. So, we went up to the nice bouncer and he explained it'd be 45 minutes but that we could have a beer or wine in the lobby coffee bar. Okay! We wait 50 minutes, and get a text saying our table is ready. The bar is full, standing room only, but I see a couple standing up, so I scoot over to their table. I'm intercepted by a waitress who tells me I have to go put my name in AGAIN with the hostess in coat check. She says it'll be another 40 minutes as people "have been here since 5pm." All this is cool - but why not be transparent about this process at the door? Why do they tell you tables first come first serve, if, in fact, they are not? We drink one NYC priced cocktail ($17-25) - both came in sticky glasses - standing next to TWO open couches. The hostess absolutely could not figure out who was who, and there were two empty couches almost the entirety of the time we had our drink. I don't recommend rushing here, especially around the buzz of the museum's opening. The bar itself is beautiful - and my cocktail was good - but this doesn't have the warm, intimate, welcoming vibe that you'd expect from a speakeasy. read more

Walking in through a nondescript door, you're welcomed into a small, dark entryway, draped in velvet, giving off somewhat of a confessional vibe. Better believe I'd go to confession often if this were it. Walk past two sets of velvet curtains and you are in heaven... (again, maybe not the best word to use here). I felt like I was transported into another world. You know you're in a special space when you check out your surroundings; up, down, left, right... there's jaw-dropping decor & detail in every one of those directions. The bar is a half circle, opening up to the floor of seating, which is 20 seats at best, ranging from comfy chairs to couches. Hanging from the ceiling, you can't miss the chandelier that brings the entire space together. To top it off, the cocktails are well crafted. This is the spot where you want to be. read more

1 star for excellent ambiance. I sure will if I could find a place to put negative stars. So I ordered a Crypt and a pineapple juice. I got a bill for 45$. Even as a New Yorker, I got a sticker shock. Then I saw a 30% tip on the point-of-sale console. I adjusted it to $1.5 per drink. So it was at $40 I went back to my seat and got restless thinking about the amount. I went back to the bar to check the prices. The other bartender looked up the recent charges on his main console and told me I was charged for a mocktail that was four dollars extra. So let's calculate now. Even at the current inflated prices of $36 including tips, there is a wide difference between that and the $45 that I was originally charged. Criminal. Not going back again. Best bar ever. You have to be a member to go but I've been able to get in twice by getting on the DJ's list. You just have to know who the DJ is for the night. An absolutely incredible bar/speakeasy with excellent cocktails. The space is stunningly beautiful, and they did such an amazing job of restoring the chapel. I would come here just to enjoy the décor and high ceilings. It's definitely one of my new favorites in the city! It's a bit hidden, but people at the museum can help steer you to the door to the stairwell door on the right side of the museum lobby area. You truly would never be able to find the bar unless you knew it existed. I found the cocktails excellent. In a city with a ton of cocktail bars, more unique concoctions can be hard to come across, but they had about 10-15 options priced at ~$17-$18 a drink, many with pretty interesting ingredients in them. While the bar is spacious, seating is relatively limited. However, I found it pretty comfortable to stand against the half-moon bar. It's not too crowded yet, so standing by the bar isn't an issue. The service was great, and I appreciate the formal attire. There were also employees walking around helping with coat service. First off the bar is located in fotografiska, we were king of confused when we were looking for it. Once we got inside, we waited in life briefly before passing through an unmarked door. The bar itself if gorgeous, high ceilings, beautiful chandelier. There's a decent amount of seating but we ended up getting the short end of the stick with a table in the corner without much view., It was a semi-private tucked away table so that has its own merits. The drinks are pretty expensive so would probably only suggest getting one or two drinks max. They are good though. The bartenders were very professional and prompt in their service. All in all we had a good time, will definitely keep in mind as a special occasion bar. Just too pricey to be a go-to bar for me.
