We wandered in not knowing what we were looking for or what we wanted but we were given so much personal attention, samples and advice. Stumbled upon this cheese shop while in the neighborhood waiting out our time to be seated at Apteka down the street. The lady inside was super sweet and let us try a million samples. They have clearly marked vegetarian cheeses and even had some vegan ones to taste! We took small nubs of a cheddar and rosemary goat cheese - so yum and different from what we've had recently! We grabbed a pack of crackers and nibbled on the cheese as a small precursor prior to our meal and it was bliss! We would've hung out longer if it wasn't closing shortly after we had arrived but happy we were able to have the experience. Definitely worth checking out! read more

Wow wow wow! I am extremely impressed with Chantal's Cheese Shop. I have driven past this shop a countless number of times and never knew it was here. Before even stepping foot into the shop, my family headed upstairs for a cheese tasting class. The whole vibe of the tasting room was so welcoming. Anaïs, the owner, is extremely knowledgeable. Her sense of humor made this experience that much better. She paired each cheese with a different butter/jam or chocolate, and surprisingly enough, it made the cheese taste even better which I did not think was possible. She was able to answer any questions we had, and was always polite with her response. When the class was over, we headed down to the shop where we received 10% off for being at the tasting. This shop is amazing because there is not only cheese to buy, there is an array of chocolate, sauces, jellys/jams/butters, pastas, and so much more. My favorite part was the "Tiny Bits Bin" located in the fridge. This bin hold small pre-cut pieces of cheese you can purchase. It honestly is a genius idea. This shop also has lunch options, which I NEED to try one day. This was such a fantastic experience, and I can not wait to bring my friends to a class and the shop in the future. Anais, the owner gave us a private class the other day. I thought i loved cheese, but Anais, who is French, is on another level of passion. It makes sense that she would be a cheese connoisseur, or should i say fromage? The passion and excitement in her presentation were palpable and very much welcomed. We got to try 5 different types of cheese: chèvre, brie formier, Jerseyhoeve, Cabot Clotbound Cheddar, and Cashel Blue, which were all paired with different jams, figs, and mustards. I felt compelled to write a review after reading the recent two star review. We went to a cheese tasting about 5-6 years ago. The cheese was excellent. However, I had some issues. First, the presenter was very friendly with a few of the "regulars ", making my husband and I feel like outsiders. The wine was good but meager portions, considering the cost. I recently attended a cheese tasting event hosted at Chantal's Cheese Shop, and while the cheese tasting itself was a good time, sadly all the circumstances around it severely detracted from it. You're coming to the event hungry as instructed, but feel compelled to not start eating cheese until the hostess starts discussing each particular slice. Sadly, even getting to the first cheese took at least 30 minutes, during which she spent the time discussing almost nothing cheese related. Rich people, working women, united states laws, Americans, people from Pittsburgh, growing your own food, government overreach. From there, she starts discussing the actual cheese itself, starting with the makers and the farm. Which I'm sure is interesting to some people, but I personally wasn't hugely invested in hearing the accolades about the farm and the owners. And then, only after 30 minutes do you get to hear 2 minutes of information about the cheese itself. I'm here to eat cheese, I would like to learn more about it directly! What flavors I should be expecting, the softness or hardness, what other cheeses it may be similar to. Something to enhance my eating experience, which is the primary reason I've come here to begin with. And this then repeats for an hour and a half, with no breaks. Really, you're just sitting and listening to someone lecture at you while you eat cheese. And you can't even talk to your fellow table mates during this. You want to ask them about what flavors they notices, share your opinions about the cheeses, and she'll shush you because she's still lecturing. This would have been MASSIVLY improved by cutting out 90% of the lecture. Take 10 minutes to talk about the cheese itself and a bit about the farm. Go into details about the taste, texture, flavors, anything that will enhance the eating part. Then, give 10 minutes of rest! Let people eat and discuss and think about the food they just ate. Then repeat. I will say, at least, that the cheeses themselves were fairly interesting, and the pairings were well done. The jams especially were the high point, those were delicious. I write this in the hope that the event will grow and improve. I really wanted to love this, and I think with some changes to the lecture it could be fantastic. read more

I love this little cheese shop! It's located right across the street from Children's Hospital, and specializes in all things cheese and charcuterie. They have a booth at the Bloomfield Saturday Market that I make sure to hit every weekend. Their homemade fresh mozzarella is awesome! It's so creamy and you can tell it's fresh. Their homemade ricotta is THE BEST! I used it to make homemade ravioli filling and I loved that you could taste the lemon juice in it! It's fun to stop in the shop to browse, although their cheeses are expensive. I like to try the small ends from blocks of cheese that are sold for only a few dollars. It's a fun way to try different types of cheese without committing to a full block. I like that they sell the cheeses by the 1/4 lb. I think other cheese shops in the area make you buy at least 1/2 lb. The employees at Chantal's introduced me to Marigold, and Cornerstone cheese- I loved both! And make sure to get the St. Angel Brie. It is like butter! You can just spread it on crackers or bread and it is incredible!! I also saw 2 nurses from Children's stop in to get gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches while I was waiting to check out. I will have to keep that in mind that they offer sandwiches too! read more

This is basically a love letter to Chantal's Cheese Shop. It's one of my favorite treasures in the city. I love it so much. They have the best selection. I want the entire counter. It takes every bit of restraint in me not to buy the whole counter and weigh 600 pounds. Luckily, the nice man at the counter was super helpful and guided me to all the best selection. I was there last week after about a year and bought lots of amazing things. Everything we bought was delicious. We bought the Lupo North Country Charcuterie. It was good and very similar to salami. I also bought Casella's Special Prosciutto which tasted amazing with manchego. We also enjoyed the Kuhweld Creamery's Morning Meadow and Mitica'a Bianco Sardo. I had Sardo when I studied in Argentina and have always loved it. The best hands down and most original was the Alp Blossom. It had edible dried flowers which made it taste absolutely amazing. The flowers made it. They were on the side of the cheese and I almost threw them away. My husband told me they were meant to be eaten. Glad he did. OMG!! They really made the cheese. That cheese has ruined me for other cheeses. Hello! I love it so much. Chantal's also makes killer sandwiches. I love the prosciutto sandwich. It's ooey gooey deliciousness. Run don't walk here. Did you know they have grilled cheese sandwiches? Because I did not and they are delicious. We tried two different ones and they were both really good. Crunchy bread, gooey cheese. I've enjoyed their great selection of cheeses and the wonderful variety of other cheese related products Last year, they also did a really nice job putting together some cheese trays and client gift baskets for me. BEHOLD! This is a cheese lovers paradise! There's truly nothing like this in the PGH area... A magical place dedicated to all things cheese. If you love cheese, and I feel like this is a popular opinion, this spot is a MUST! Listen, I know nothing about cheese. I am a simple woman. I like cheddar and gouda. I do not know about fancy pants cheeses. But I know I like eating fancy pants cheeses! I love working my way through different kinds. I called to order a cheese and charcuterie board for my anniversary and wasn't sure whether I wanted to go with one of their already put together ones or create my own. Problem was, there is no way I could create my own without going in or knowing the different types of cheese they offer. Also one small note too, I didn't realize this until recently. A charcuterie board is literally just meat. It does not include cheese. So if you are getting both on a board, it is a cheese and charcuterie board. It's often listed at restaurants as a charcuterie board even if it just has cheese or has both. Just FYI :) But I digress... I ended up calling and chatting with a very nice man who guided me towards The Made in America board because I said I like cheddar and sharp cheese. My husband likes blue cheese so I also ordered an additional cheese. I also added on crackers because that does not come with the board. It was a great spread! I ordered the small to split between the two of us and ate it for 3 days after. The cheese definitely didn't last long both between the two of us and whatever was left got hard quickly. But that's not the shops fault, that's just what cheese does. Everything was really good, but as with any board there's always clear favorites (the sharpest cheeses for me!). I also LOVED the dried apricots. There were ample fruit on the board and I honestly wish I would have asked to switch the dried cranberries because they're not my favorite. I bet they would have done it. The only thing I would love for them to start doing is put little picks/signs on what each cheese and meat was or write it on the top of the container above the cheese and meats. I didn't think to ask when I picked up, but once I got home I could guess some of them and others I was like... maybe this is what it is after checking the website again. I think next time I'd like to go in and pick out my own meats and cheeses. I know it's slightly difficult these days with COVID, but they are being super safe and only letting one person into the shop at a time. My mama brings me cheese from PA to California every visit and it's my favorite. Just recently got to visit and go cheese shopping myself and it was the cutest little cheese shop ever ! Large variety from all over. Try the house made mozzarella! And the Prairie breeze cheddar is amazing. Who doesn't love cheese? I recently attended a cheese and wine paring at Chantal's Cheese Shop in Lower Lawrenceville / Bloomfield area. Anaïs the cheesemonger and owner, hosted a Pittsburgh Foodies cheese night in her beautiful shop, educating myself and a group of fellow Pittsburgh foodies on all things cheese. Anaïs was an amazing host! She is originally from France and is super sweet. Its so endearing to listen to her as she shares her apparent passion for cheese & food. You can just tell she loves sharing her knowledge with her infatuated customers. We enjoyed generous portions of a selection of curated cheeses paired with specialty accompaniments like jams, confits, and mustards, plus a plate of savory goodies including meats & salmon rillettes, and a red and white wine pairing. The collective favorites were the super buttery Kunik a triple cream goats and cows milk cheese paired with local honeycomb, and the Le bleu de Laqueuille paired with a red pepper confit with raspberry & cayenne. My favorites from the savory side plate were the luxe butter Ste-Mere d'Isigny and the balsamic pearls on the salmon spread. For the wine pairings we enjoyed french wines of course. A white wine from Bourgogne Aligoté, France and a red wine from Languedoc, France. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed both of these non-sweet wines and would definitely purchase for my own enjoyment at home. The white Louis Jadot Bourgogne Aligoté 2017, was sharp and acidic so it was great to pair with our rich cheeses. The red wine, was the Jeff Carrel Les Darons Rouge 2016, it was was bold and flavorful with a delicious berry taste. I was home, on the phone with a friend telling her i was really craving pate' when I was told about a cute cheese shop that also offered vegan options and they would probably have a vegan pate' so off this Illy Philly goes to Chantal's Cheese Shop! When I got there, alas it was closed , but I saw someone sweeping so I knocked on the door. He came over to tell me they were closed and I let him know that I drove from a distance and I just wanted to ask of they had vegan pate and I would come back when they're open the next day. Well...he told me to come in! How nice was that?! He showed me around the store and pointed out their Vegan cheeses and products and then showed me the vegan pate'!! Yayyyy me!!! The selection is amazing for such a small shop - not only do they have cheese, but they have crackers, and jams, and spreads, and cured meats, and cheese boards, and anything else you could think of that goes with cheese. They even have a section in their fridge that has tiny pieces of cheese to buy. I will definitely be inspecting this section on my next visit. When I stopped in, I had one of their grilled cheeses. and mmmmmm it was so good. it was warm and gooey and you could tell the cheese was high quality. And it was made on a french baguette. Not only does Chantal's offer a wide variety of specialty/imported cheeses from across the world. It also includes a knowledgeable staff to help you navigate everything Cheese related. I usually bring the wine I'm serving, and whoever is there helps pic out the cheese pairing I've probably stopped by 6 times in the last 4 months, and it's a 10 outta 10 every time. I love cheese and was so excited to hear that this place served lunch. I've sampled their cheeses before during some farmer's markets and thought they had a great selection of cheeses! The store is small, but has a great selection of cheeses and local, specialized accompaniments (crackers, jams, honey, etc). Cheeses mostly were in the $16-25/lb price range. They had some hot honey and lavender jelly to sample. They had 4 different grilled cheeses to pick from including a daily special which was truffle grilled cheese. The grilled cheeses are pre-prepared and wrapped in foil and tossed on a panini press for 5-10 minutes. We got the truffle, three-cheese, and prosciutto grilled cheese. The biggest issue I had was that the grilled cheese was served on baguette bread. The bread was good quality with a good crunch, but was too hard and dry. The ratio was also too heavy on bread and did not have enough cheese for the amount of bread. Would have been better with a fresh buttery/olive oil white bread. The cheese itself was great and melted, but would have preferred cheeses with a more pungent flavor especially with the thick bread. The truffle was my favorite and the prosciutto itself had a great flavor. Also there is no seating in the shop! So expect to find some seating elsewhere to eat your sandwiches. Overall, really average grilled cheese that was not worth the price. Could use some tweaks to really make the cheese stand out which is supposed to be the star of these sandwiches. read more

I dropped in on a warm, summer evening for a cheese tasting with some of the best jams/spread pairings I have had in a very long time! The occasion was made especially memorable in advent of the national day of France. Things I liked: - an excellent pairing of jams, confit and pate with high quality cheeses. These include caramelized onion jam (it was savory sweet, absolutely superb!), williams pear and white wine spread, black cherry confit, and so forth. These are all stocked in store and are a must try for future wine-cheese pairings of your own. - The cheeses were very high quality: a classical and easy introduction into cheeses with fromage d'affinois, 24 month aged Comte, and also a Roquefort. While I haven't had a chance to partake since the beginning of the pandemic, I will say that this place is absolutely worth checking out. I love good cheese. I'm a bit of a snob about it. One thing I always regretted was that I had never gotten the chance to experience proper French Camembert. They had some. While it wasn't truly Camembert from Normandy (it was made with pasteurized milk), it was about as close as I'll ever come to trying the genuine article unless I somehow have a windfall and can afford a trip to France. The selection of French and American cheeses is excellent. In my opinion they could work a little on the selections outside of that. They also have some delicious spreads such as hot honey, which I love. I'll be back to sample them again. read more

Happy stomach, happy heart! I did the cheese pairing evening here and would DEFINITELY recommend. Five delicious, specialty cheeses, each paired with an interesting jam, plus two (large) wine samples, unlimited baguette and crackers, and a side dish of pickled onions, mustard, and pâté. Im vegetarian so forewent the pâté, and Anaïs (who owns the shop and ran the workshop) even substituted one of the cheeses she had planned for the evening to accommodate me! The original menu had a cheese that used lard in the process, and I was so grateful to be thought of like that without even asking. She walked us through the history and process of each cheese which only magnified our appreciation. Everything was so, so delicious. It's pretty pricey at around $50 per person, but if it's something you value it's worth the splurge. You also get 10% off any purchases from the store, and trust me you will want to make some. In addition to the huge cheese case in the shop, they sell jams, honeys, crackers, wines, cooking tools, and much more. I'm a little green behind the ears when it comes to leaving reviews on yelp, so I'm still trying to suss out what ratings mean to me. So far, if it feels like I'm gonna gush about something and annoy my friends about it for a couple of days, it's gonna be a five star BABE BUSINESS. Popped in here on a random afternoon and ended up having a suuuuuper lovely, leisurely conversation with the folks behind the counter. We chatted about all things cheese and Pittsburgh, and they were incredibly gracious about letting us try a bunch of amazing cheeses, even with me being a total cheese novice. Definitely coming back for all my cheese needs! We took their havarti+gouda+cheddar grilled cheeses (which are super super toasty half baguettes) to go for lunch and they were scrumptious & v affordable, too. read more

If I could use one word to describe this place would be the word "awesome." I love the wide variety of cheeses sourced either locally or from some amazing village in *insert quaint European village*. I love that they have not only cheese, but various cheese accessories (cheese boards, cheese knives) and accompaniments (meats, chutneys, and olives to name a few). The staff is very welcoming and quite knowledgeable of their wares. You are free to taste their cheeses and they like to recommend any cheese to suit your taste. I haven't had a chance to try their sandwiches, but I am sure they are gonna blow my socks off... and I have yet another excuse to swing by! read more
