I ordered a variety of dishes to take out from this restaurant. Basic Chinese dishes that typically you can not go wrong with. We were unable to eat any of dishes. Threw it all out even the fried rice. The taste was bad and although did not look burnt, tasted burnt. The meat looked suspicious, even the wonton soup was not edible. I am sorry to report such a review, I hope this place can improve. The service was great and it is a local, non chain restaurant that I like to support. Please do better. read more

They used canes mandarin oranges and the food was watery and mushy. My wife decided to have ice cream instead we think the sesame chicken was made with gravy and can chicken chunks? Crab Rangoon and egg foo young was good egg rolls great. Just main dishes. Sad Rich was closed. They also gave sweet and sour in packs it was yellow not the red sauce in a cup weird. read more

First time my wife and I got take out there the food was terrific. So I'm sorry to say the next two times it went from mediocre to awful. My third time I got sweet and sour chicken and it was overly salty and soggy from swimming in sauce which tasted off. If I could rate it less than one star I would. Only giving 1 star because the only good thing was our waitress, she provided the best customer service she could. The food was not good at all. Beef fried rice was bland and was not something I would consider to be fried rice. Our shrimp lo mein was horrible, noodles were not done and when they were sent back to be cooked more it came back soupy. Chef came out to speak with us and was very rude and condescending. I've been coming to Southwest Michigan for 20 years and have always been on the hunt for a good Chinese restaurant - and haven't found one until Chan's. You can't even get egg foo young outside of Chicago. Well, this place not only has it - they nailed it! It's excellent. I'm already planning on going back next week. The only thing good was the crab Rangoon's we ordered 3 different dishes and everything came in a slop of bland sauce. Taste like corn starch when they tried to thicken it up. Had to stop eating after a couple of bites and take the food home to rinse off the sauce and make a new sauce for it. Very disappointing and will not be going again. Having, until recently, worked for 37 years in Paw Paw, a town of few options relative to good restaurants (such tears I still have for the demise of Cafe 237), I have eaten at Chan's off and on for at least that long. I was even around in the 80's to eat at the restaurant's predecessor in the building, Gnome's Inn, a delightful burger and fries diner. The majority of my experiences with Chan's was when my coworkers and I flipped a coin and decided to go to Chan's for lunch. Sometimes, my girl and I would be in town for dinner; other times, I might pick up take out on the way home. The physical setting is small, with maybe 40 seats distributed over booths and tables. The interior is outfitted with stereotypical "Chinese restaurant" decor. The menu is classic Chinese American - there is nothing particularly original in the menu and I'd bet the only things to change over the years are the prices. The prices are a bit high. You could easily spend the same amount of money at Chinn Chinn or Nonla in nearby Mattawan and find greater originality and satisfaction. Admittedly, at lunch my colleagues and I were more invested in blindly consuming our meals in a speedy manner so we could get back to work in 60 minutes. Chan's did a fine job meeting our goals. But for dinner, where no time limited existed, and where we could really pay attention to what we were eating, we were routinely disappointed. The food was underseasoned, bland, and boring. And because Chan's has the misfortune to be near two amazing restaurants in Mattawan means I can't say "Chinn Chinn, Nonla, and Chan's" in the same sentence without a choking sensation rising into my throat. But I think Chan's does a decent business catering to anyone in the area too unadventurous to eat at these other two restaurants. No matter how many fine bakeries exist in the land, there will always be customers who prefer to buy Wonder Bread. read more

I'm in Paw Paw regularly for business and frequently stop here for dinner. The portion sizes are great, and fit well with the price point. As far as the quality of the food goes, I can't complain. While it certainly is not "authentic" Chinese food, it is still quite tasty and does not leave you with that empty feeling an hour after eating. My go to meal here is the Hong Kong chicken with a side order of Spring rolls. I usually get my food to go, but the few times that I have stopped in to sit down and eat the wait staff was very pleasant. read more

Best Asian restaurant I've been too in a while! loved everything I've ordered. Don't let the small location fool you, you will be truly amazed with the food! I've lived in Paw Paw for most of my life, but I had never been to Chan's. My Freshmen year of college, I was driving this old 1990 Geo Prizm, and I cannot count the times I had to get a jump start from random people. Chan, the owner, helped me out once as well, so I decided that I would stop buy and order some dinner. OH GOLLY GOSH! I love this place! I decided to check this place even though it has mixed reviews. Maybe they are a bit inconsistent but tonight they were great. I can't give them a five star but they get a definite 4. I've only tried there shrimp fried rice and egg rolls. Both excellent quality and fresh. Love the fact they have that same smoky wok flavor as my favorite Chicago place. I was so disappointed in the poor quality of the food we had today. It was quite frankly disgusting. We ordered four different dishes and three appetizers. The pot stickers were dried out and hard. The sweet and sour pork was gross- the breading was soaked with oil. The dishes overall lacked flavor. The food was practically inedible. I will NEVER eat here again. read more

This is one of my mainstays in Paw Paw. Always loved going here before or after a movie at the Strand Theater. Most of the time the food and my experiences have been wonderful. There have been a few times where the taste of the food didn' t seem as on par as it had dozens of times before, but overall their dishes are good and fresh, and the staff is friendly. One thing I appreciate about this place is the fact that their menu offers more than just Chinese food. It also offers American food such as hamburgers. This was always helpful if I went here with someone who isn' t too fond of Chinese food, I.E. my dad. read more

Chan's is one of those hometown Chinese restaurants that people grow to love. This restaurant has made a niche in the community. I recently came back to Chan's for a carry out order and noticed some wear and tear in the restaurant itself. Our order took a little more time than estimated on the phone too. I observed a wonderful aroma of tasty food wafting about the area upon my arrival. Most certainly, the food I was about to eat. I was right. After opening the paper bag in which my food was contained, I discovered the wrong soup... Bummer! But the one they sent (chicken and rice?) was nice. All of our food was quite tasty...And those in the establishment were accommodating to all of our minor changes and requests for adding a little of this and that, and leaving a little of this and that out as well. I thought the cost for four people was reasonable at $30. Overall, I'm sure I'll be back at Chan's next time I'm in the area. read more

Chan's is my FAVORITE place to get Chinese and honestly probably my favorite place to eat food of any kind. My family has been consistently eating at Chan's (order in/take out) for 20 years. Have been dining here off and on for about 25 years. The food is decent, though as a vegan (limited offerings), I can't say that any particular dish is remarkable. Unlike others, I actually do enjoy the cozy / slightly-kitschy atmosphere of the interior (maybe nostalgia since it's always been like that, and there's something comforting in its familiarity and lack of pretense). The service can be hit-or-miss, usually decent; though they seem to do more carryout business than dine-in. My main issue with Chan's is the prices--for being in a small town, the entrees are higher than most Chinese restaurants in Chicago, and I'm not sure why--the quality of food is not higher, nor is the menu more authentic. It may have to do with Chan's having enjoyed a monopoly on the local Chinese scene for a number of years, but since Great China opened a block away and Chinn Chinn and Nonla are offering great, modern asian/fusion cuisine just down the road in Mattawan, they have some serious competition. Ever since Great China opened we've been going there most of the time, very friendly service and food that is comparable to Chan's, for quite a bit less money. Will try Chan's again soon to see if anything has changed or if the prices have gone back in the direction of realistic. read more

Wow! Classic Chinese-American cuisine. The lo main (chicken and tofu/vegetable) hit all the right notes - good noodles, balanced salt and wok-Smokey-sweetness, with massive portions. I think the leftovers were even better the next day - so that is saying a lot! Egg rolls were large and perfectly seasoned. Hawaiian chicken was great. If you are looking for great Chinese food at a reasonable price - this is it, wrapped in a building that makes you feel like you are transported to china town in San Fransisco (long, narrow room with many small booths with all the classic Chinese colors and decorations). read more

NOPE, NOPE, NOPE!!! This was mine and my husband's first time eating here! I got the cashew chicken and rice. It was horrible and over filled with this snot looking sauce that tasted awful! The cashew's were not cooked with the chicken. They were really soft and just sprinkled over the nasty sauce. It was definitely unedible for me! At least the rice was okay. My husband got the sweet and sour pork with rice. The batter on the pork was really soggy, the sauce was terrible and the carrots were raw! We definitely won't be going back there again! read more

I waited a while before getting service, but I blame that on Covid. Even if not due to Covid, the meal was well worth the wait. We had Pork Chop Suey, Beef Fried Rice, and the Fried Shrimp appetizer. I didnt taste the beef that my wife had, but my Chop Suey was incredible. The fried shrimp was incredible. I think I may have cried just a little bit out of joy. The only chinese restaurant worthy of eating at for the past 30 years. They are flavorful and not dry. I live in Kalamazoo and have had crummy bland and dry food from other establishments. Nothing beats a smalltown hole in the wall restaurant. My go-to faves are: orange chicken, crabmeat rangoon, egg rolls, egg drop soup, any of the lo meins and any of the egg foo young dishes. Just horrible. I made the mistake of ordering Egg Foo Yung for lunch there over 5 years ago, it was inedible and I threw it out after one bite. So I'm sick today and don't want to go far... I order the hot and sour soup, the egg drop soup and an order of eggrolls, since I didn't know what I'd be in the mood for. The hot & sour soup was overly thick and greasy and the egg drop soup was unlike any I've ever tasted and completely lacking flavor and inedible. The eggrolls were freshly fried little logs of grease with lackluster stuffing. I'll NEVER go back again, not for anything. When I walked in I smelt that greasy cheap Chinese food smell. I hoped the food would be better considering the reviews on here. DO NOT BE MISLEAD! Drive 10 minutes East on 94 to Mattawan and there's an AMAZING place there called Chinn Chinn's. This was the worse Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. First, they were exceptionally understaffed and couldn't effectively handle the customers. Not only was the service slow but they weren't very personable. I ordered the dinner for one. The egg flower soup tasted like warm vegetable oil. The egg roll was greasy. The sweet and sour pork was greasy. The chicken chow mein...not sure what to say about it. Resembled prison slop. Tasted horrible. Absolutely no Asian flavors.
