Twenty years ago when another Chinese Buffet came to town they had buffet wars. We literally ate lunch everyday as cheap as $1.50. China Garden won the battle and had been the only Chinese in the area. I miss those days. Quality has slowly gone down hill to the point of a weekly carry out being a monthly carry out to no carry out. I miss the old China Garden where quality mattered. Well they have upgraded the outside facade and business front. It was falling down and bad for awhile and detracting from the food and service. Now it looks more like it used to - clean and inviting. We usually order carry-out and it is always fresh and delicious. We like this place very much and will continue to come here often. I'm coming to like Chinese food less and less - too oily. I also doesn't help that I recently visited San Fransisco, where the Asian cuisine is fresh and on pointe. But that's me, and not this joint's fault. I stopped at China Garden because it was one of the few things open late on Dowagiac's charming main drag on a Saturday night. Got the garlic broccoli and vegetable lo main. The broccoli was a good texture, but I could have used more visible garlic in the sauce. Lo main was ok too, though on the oily side. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask if they use MSG, so ended up with a red, itchy face after supper. Fellow MSG allergy sufferers beware! Service on the first dish was ok; I had to go back and ask about the second. Decor is typical basic chinese take-out, with red good-luck signs taped up. China Garden is your typical Americanized Chinese food, but this stuff is delicious! Take-out, dine-in, or all you can eat buffet options will all leave you stuffed and ready for a nap. I didn't realize how lucky we are to have this little gem in downtown Dowagiac until I visited a big city Chinatown and tried one of their highly-rated Chinese places; they didn't hold a candle to our China Garden! I lived in Dowagiac for over 13 years, but now live in Statesville NC. I so miss the great food China Garden has. My husband and I both hold all Chinese food to a China Garden stander. lol. This used to be my favorite place for Wonton Soup. Today it was soo bad. No green onion or seasoning in the soup. Wontons were stuffed with hard meat, no soft pillowy filling as before. It was just gross. Order of 2 combo platers and soup took 40 mins. Probably will be a long time before I go back. Sad. read more

I've been getting food here on and off for the last 7 or 8 years. The reasons for the "on and off" are simple. Firstly, the overall attitude of the owner/manager isn't that great. Just the general attitude, and the paranoia associated with their the fear another Chinese restaurant might open nearby. Second, and my major gripe, is the flat out refusal to accommodate their customers. I'm referring to custom orders. It seems that most of the time when I ask for a special order they refuse the request. i always begin with "can I pay extra for". For example "Can I pay extra for beef lo mien with my combo" but the answer is almost always no, like they can't be bothered taking my money. Other places are more than happy to try and make sure the customer is happy. it's for this reason, that I give them 1 star. I am simply returning the contempt they offer me. Apart from that, If you can put up with the poor attitude, and the lack of customer service, the food isn't too terribly bad. It would be better if they drained the grease off everything more thoroughly. If you are willing to drive a bit further to Niles, try Hot Wok, the food is good and they are friendly and don't mind accommodating their customers. read more

Very frustrated by how this business has gone downhill since new ownership occurred a few months ago. China Garden has been in our community for over 20yrs and was always well spoken of. Now though, more and more issues are occurring with messed up orders and bad time service management. Today, yes Valentine's Day, I order a meal for one as my spouse was working late. I was placed on hold. First clue as that never happens. I was then told 20 minutes. I arrived at the 25 minute mark. I found people standing in line backed up to the door and others sitting without food. Several people were complaining to each other about waiting up to one hour. Several walked out without taking food. I stood for an additional 20 minutes to be told my order also wasn't ready either, 40 minutes. They kept my order too. The entire staff seemed suprised and overwhelmed by the volume of potential customers as well as suprised by people being upset. Don't waste your time here. Going to be sad to see an empty building. read more

Some of the food might be decent. Is it worth the bad attitude and sneer of the owner? no. I believe if a customer is willing to pay for extra, for example pork, beef, chicken etc then you should provide it. Instead, it's too hard for them. They would rather turn down the money. I have eaten here for years, its time I leave a review. The food is very good, has amazing flavor and is probably the best Chinese in Southwest Michigan. Better than any buffet in Niles or South Bend. My wife loves this place. Now I must explain the 3 Stars. There are several reasons why this place did not rate higher with me. 1) Only go during busy times of the day, because they WILL NOT bring out fresh food unless the old food is gone. If you go during off times you will eat dried out food and rice, or they will run out and not make more for the buffet. I keep telling you to go to the buffet when they are busy because that is what makes the difference between a really good experience and a bad one.
