If I could give a one star, I would. We ordered and sat inside. The food came out and when we opened it, it immediately smelled strange, like sewer water or poop. When we tasted it, it had a weird flavor. The orange chicken wasn't terrible, but once we went to eat it again a couple hours later, it also stunk like sewer. read more

This is THE best Chinese place in the whole area. I always get crab rangoons because they're my favorite and no one does it better than them! I tried the steamed dumplings for the first time too and they're amazing! Their spring rolls are perfect and so are the Chinese donuts. Their chicken lo mein and beef fried rice are amazing as well. The LAST time we were there it was a disaster. First of all, it was hot and humid in there (fix your AC). We ordered our meals which came with soup and egg rolls. I had Hot Sour soup and it was so salty I couldn't eat it. I went to the restroom and when I came back, my wife had her food, but mine wasn't there. I waited for a while thinking it must take longer to cook. Eventually I tried to flag the server down but was ignored on several passes by. Once she finally stopped, I asked where my food was, and she didn't know. She forgot to put the order in, that's why. We've been there in the past and the food was just so-so, but it seems all Chinese restaurants are all take out now other than this one. Egg rolls were super soggy, Chicken Lo Mein, which I ended up feeding to my chickens had overcooked noodles, barely any chicken, and it had a strange cleaning solution taste to it. Shrimp toast was yuck, spit it out. The crab rangoon, half had no filling and the other half barely any filling..no sweet n sour sauce given. Takeout for $75.00 was not even remotely what we expected. The vegetable fried rice tasted like it was soaked in used oil.. I was looking so forward to having Chinese, this was a disappointment. My husband has been craving some good Chinese food because according to him "the last time I had good Chinese food was at the one Watervliet place". We got China Garden, which I surprisingly never had before even though I've lived just a few miles from it my whole life. I got orange chicken with white rice, while my husband got sweet and sour chicken with white rice. My husband ate his quick as heck and said it was fantastic. I've never seen him eat food that fast and he seemed super pleased. I liked my chicken just as much, but ate it much slower. I am looking forward to eating from China Garden again soon. read more

The lunch specials here are good and a decent portion. I tried the beef with broccoli and the bourbon chicken. Wonton soup was good. Hot and sour was just ok. They have house made hot mustard available. The fried pupu platter was over fried to the point of mostly being inedible, should not have been served. Wontons and rangoon had the tiniest amount of filling I have ever seen and were rock hard, had to throw them away. Ribs were very tough. Skip anything fried here. Fried rice is on the bland side. I do like the lo mein. Prices are decent and I like that they have small and large options for entrees. Almond cookies are good, and cheap. Receipts here show the price but not what the item is, something to keep in mind if you need a precise receipt for work or a large group. read more

When you dine in, it might not seem like much, but the food speaks for itself. The staff might seem rude to some people by their loud tone and fast talking, but I believe they're very nice. For the type of Chinese food I like, I find a few criteria that have increased my odds of success: 1) strip mall location, the narrower the better, 2) tiled, not carpeted floor, 3) orders called into the kitchen in native language, 4) kitchen is visible from the counter, 5) menu is based on the standard sheet you see in so many Chinese restaurants around the country. Black and red ink on white paper - not in a menu holder, ready to circle the items you want with a pen or pencil, and 6) standard backlit pictures of a number of the menu items over the counter. That said, China Garden fulfills all those criteria here in St. Joe, which has us stopping in twice a week or more. They are masters of the fryolater - crab rangoon (which, in a tasty twist, they do with mozzarella cheese), egg rolls, fried wontons, etc. have all come out golden brown with consistency. The fried dumplings (wok-fried) are meaty and gingery. The wonton soup has a deep-hued, rich broth with, again, very meaty wontons. My wife and I enjoy the orange-flavor beef. It's nicely tangy. One of the positive features of restaurants that meet these criteria is that a dish like orange flavor beef typically consists of mostly deep fried orange flavor beef and a broccoli floret or two rather than lots of vegetables taking up space in the container, or it being half liquid from the sauce. The protein source in the dishes China Garden serves is typically very substantial in amount. A decent sized order gets its requisite fortune cookies (a flavorful, fresh brand), but they also tend to throw in a package or two of almond cookies, providing a sweet finish to the meal. One or two minor quibbles I have is that I have not found their various fried rices to be as complex in flavor as others I've had, though they are still hearty. Also they have added one of my personal favorites, Singapore style rice noodles, but the amount of curry added has varied from almost none to too much. It may take a little time to get that one right, as the staff learns how to make the dish. read more

I've ordered from China Garden for a number of years. I've never been disappointed with their service or food . However, over the last few months the quality of the dishes has greatly diminished. Any dish I've ordered whether it be shrimp, pork, steak or chicken, contains very little of the identifiable main ingredient, it's mostly vegetables. Example, the green pepper steak stir fry, had six small slices of (meat) and at least a pound of peppers and onions. For Chinese food in SJ, this is the place I call the most (I almost always get takeout). I find their service to always be fast and very friendly. I'm mostly vegetarian, and they have a few options on the menu that I like. My go-to choice is mixed vegetables with steamed tofu from the "special-diet" menu, which means they don't use oil when cooking or MSG in the sauce, so it's just overall healthier, without sacrificing on the flavor. When I order it, they include the sauce in a separate container so you can choose how much to use. I love sauce so I like to order extra and they are always accommodating. The food may not seem super-authentic like you could find in Chicago or other big cities, but I'd still recommend if you are looking for good American-Chinese food in the area read more

Got takeout dinner there on Saturday for wife & me and was very pleased! Everything was fresh & hot: Lemon Chicken, Veg Fried Rice, Egg Rolls, and Steamed Dumplings. The Lemon Chicken was lightly breaded and made up of good quality breast meat, cooked just right, tasty lemon sauce on the side. Felt very safe there as masks are required for entry and there's quite a Plexiglas divider between you and the cashier. Staff was friendly and efficient too. Will definitely return soon! read more

If you're a vegetarian you'll be disappointed with the limited chicken less options. I tried their buffet and I wasn't too impressed by what they had to offer. First visit to CG was pretty great! Was a big lover of Hong Kong House and this Chinese compared pretty good. HKH has definitely fallen off over the years and have been searching for another great Chinese restaurant. Loved the chicken fried rice, egg drop, and whatever the shrimp meal is. Deep fried shrimp are great. The pork fried rice was good too but way to much breading for me. I'm already eating bad, don't have to compound it by eating so much extra breading!
