Ban Thai - Tofu pad Thai and sticky rice with mango dessert - Thai Near Me - St Joseph, Michigan

Interesting experience here. I stopped by hoping to get dinner but the owner said it was to-go only. Not a big deal. Things just felt alittle off. He also said it would be 45+ minutes for to-go. Don't get me wrong he seemed friendly. But not things you want to hear when you were just trying to get dinner. Another thing that threw me off was he asked if I needed utensils... which was kind of obvious since he told me it was already to-go... The vibes just felt off. And lastly, my curry had peanuts, which I'm fine with. The peanuts tasted like they were fried and sat in a container for a while, like had an old oil taste. I'd rather just have unfried or raw peanuts. Other than that the curry was pretty good and I also ordered a coconut ice cream, which was on the sweeter side. You could taste the condensed milk- which might have been the main ingredient. Long review but just thrown off a bit. I would come back I think? read more

Jimmy is SO nice! Incredible customer service. One of the best spots in St. Joseph for food. Highly recommend!!

This is a hard place to get a table , Food is so good I could eat it 4 out of 7 days a week . Service is quick and so friendly . Ambiance is very cozy , with only 10 tables it very nice . But again the food is top notch and getting a table is really hard so plan ahead. read more

I've been coming to Ban Thai since they opened when I was still in school and living with my parents. I hadn't been back in about five years so I begged my husband to get me my go to meal and he thankfully complied with my request. Their pineapple fried rice, with the choice of tofu for the "meat", is what I have always ordered from them because I'm predictable. I ate every bite because I absolutely love Ban Thai food. If you love Thai food, I'd highly recommend stopping by this fantastic restaurant for dinner (as they are only open 5pm-8:30pm 5 days a week). Jimmy is an excellent owner and I can't wait to come back. read more

Really disappointed & I won't be back again, seeing as how I don't live here and I wouldn't return if I did. We got 3 entrees and the pricing didn't match the online menu prices, but I understood that because he quoted me the price over the phone. That's the least of my concerns.... Two of our entrees were supposed to be "stir fried" but the vegetables were so limp & steamed. The entrees were filled with SOOO much liquid in the container (see pics). My eggplant dish had just a few eggplant, mostly carrots & green pepper. The sauce did not stick to the food & it was just so watery and unflavored. The noodles we got instead of rice was so soggy and broken apart. Mushy. The brown rice had large clumps of extra dried / crunchy rice pieces and it was like they scraped the bottom of the barrel to fill my to go container. Inedible, honestly. The pad Thai was overly saucy and over cooked....again soggy. Not sure what's going on here. Weirdest thing is that we received 3 fortune cookies. Like, is this Chinese take out or thai food? read more

This place is amazing... I left the area a year ago and still haven't had any Thai that has come close... Spicy Mamma is my favorite dish. The owner is fantastic, I miss this place! read more

Food isn't bad. Pretty good for the area actually. But it is pricey, and the restaurant has limited hours... I'd come back again. read more

Ban Thai - Thai Near Me - St Joseph, Michigan

Good food, price was a bit high but owner was very up front about it and friendly when we picked up the order

Where do I even began! So we called and spoke to the owner and he said he would have to check with his wife if he could seat 20+ guest. Once we got sat, he passed the menus and never mentioned anything until the end when we were paying. All of a sudden, the prices on the menu increased! We argued as much as we could because if the price is not listed I shouldn't have to pay it. We payed! The food was okayyyy and the owners are a huge scam! DO NOT GO HERE! read more

Food is not bad but they no longer dine in. Carry out only. Also price are what the owner tells you. It's not on the menu. It's only the owner and the wife so the wait is longer than usual. The owner himself is very nice but it does come with some inconvenience for no dine in. read more

Phenomenal food! Everything is great. But I've never met a sweeter person than the owner here. He's so precious!! Will go back

Restaurant owners are such a delight to be around and are very quick with their preparation, such a cute setting, food was absolutely delicious as well! read more

Crab rangoon and spring rolls were phenomenal. The pad thai, massaman curry, and shrimp dishes were all a 10. Highly recommend.

Cannot believe we forget about this excellent restaurant! We won't anymore! Very kind team serving delicious food. Thai rolls are delightful - one order is 3 rolls. We both ate those fast! Pad Thai was spot on. Great flavor. I ordered tofu and will go chicken next time. Spicy Mama was devoured. Chicken satay was also a hit, comes with two dipping sauces. Yum!! read more

Been here long before, but returned years back craving Thai food. I came here with a friend and unfortunately the restaurant dine in was closed but they were doing take out orders. My friend and I ordered take out and the service was friendly and somewhat timely. When we got our food, I couldn't help but notice how small the portions were and how high the cost for my Green Curry with tofu dish was. I understand that Thai food is pricy but usually the places I frequent, the portions are reasonable so I can let that slide, however here the portions were lacking and leaving me not fully satisfied...instead leaving me questioning whether or not I was satisfied. If I have to question and ponder on that, the answer is obvious, because if I was full plus have leftovers for later, I would say it's well worth the money. But I think since this is the only Thai restaurant in town with no other competition, he can raise the prices to $16+ per small dish. In other Thai restaurants I can order two entrees for that price. Anyway if a place doesn't fill me up and provide hefty portions that I can take home to enjoy for a 2nd round, I have to go elsewhere. read more

In town for business and got takeout. I love Thai food so I like to try the local spot when I travel, but this was below average. The best thing I tried was the chive dumplings. When I picked up the food it was significantly more expensive than it should have been and they said everything has increased by $2 per item, but that isn't reflected on their website. read more

I can never seem to get the hours right here, but I'll say this. These guys have the absolute best crab Rangoon in the area and the most authentic pad Thai. If you can figure out when they're open, you'll be pleased. read more

It was ok. I ordered easy - chicken fried rice and crab rangoons. Both were good. I didn't think they were amazing but I'd definitely stop again and try another entree. The owner was SO nice and we chatted for a few minutes about where I was visiting from (Petoskey). read more

We ordered three different dishes for takeout and they didn't even taste like Thai. No flavor, very overcooked and not at all authentic. Service was very slow. So disappointed. No table service available. read more

The ower/ chef was so kind and welcoming. He made me a fresh iced coffee was perfect. The food was delicious and authentic. The sticky rice with mango was outstanding and my favorite. The rice and chicken dish was amazing as was the fried bananas. The Tom Yum soup was delicious and fresh. Definitely will go back. Love to support a locally owned family restaurant. read more

I loved my dish. I ordered the spicy mama. I decided to get it hot and it was the perfect spice level for me. The vegetables were also the perfect tenderness too. I chatted with the owner for a little and wow what a sweet and genuine man. If you are reading this, my dad is Harry! He has been there a lot! See you next time :) read more

Ban Thai is just as good as ever. What can I say about Ban Thai that hasn't already been said? Not only is this the best Thai cuisine for hundreds of miles, but you will not find better hospitality and consideration at any restaurant around. Jimmy and his wife run a tight ship, providing incredibly fresh and flavorful dishes, as fast as humanly possible. You will not be disappointed by any dish; curry, fried rice or noodles, everything is exceptional. If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss out on Thai Iced Tea to drink and mango sticky rice for dessert. Thank you, Jimmy, for always making us feel like family! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Jimmy and his wife Angie! They serve incredibly delicious and authentic Thai food and are very hospitable. The hours on Yelp aren't updated for their COVID hours and I showed up 20 minutes after they had closed. Jimmy saw me in the parking lot while I was trying to figure out where to pickup from, took my order and brought it out to me with free sodas! Hardworking, kind, and delicious are just a few of the words I can use to describe my experience at Ban Thai with Jimmy. I will most definitely be back! Thank you! read more

Always excellent- Jimmy makes you feel like family every time. Moved here from a big city and the only thing I really miss is good food availability at all times. Ban Thai is obviously the best in the area but I'd choose to eat here even in the city. Thats says a lot to me. read more

Excellent food and service. Visiting from Chicago and this restaurant was a suggestion from our hotel. Definitely not dissapointed Had Lard Nar, Pad Thai, Fried Rice and Mussaman Curry. All were flavorful and some of the best Thai food we have had at home (Chicago) or during our travels. FIVE STARS!! read more

Delicious and authentic Thai. I love the Tod Mun fish cakes and the Lad Nar spicy. The pad thai is good as well.

Delicious!! Easily one of the best restaurants in the area and the most authentic I wish I had taken photos of the food but I was too hungry haha I got the Pad Kee Mao with red snapper- so good!! Pad Mee Mao is one of my favorite Thai dishes because of the basil, garlic, salty, sweet, spicy-ness of it all I also couldn't leave without getting some Lad Na, the spicy mama, and the curry fried rice which I was especially craving. I had to taste a good portion of the menu since it was my first time coming there; it was all very delicious and necessary because I haven't had good asian food in a while since moving out here Coming from someone who's spent most of her life eating Asian food in the Bay Area (Cali) it's easily a 5 out of 5 for me Plus the interior is wonderfully decorated and makes for a great date night place once it opens up for indoor dining again read more

It was the takeout order because that was the only option. We were charged for $58 for 2 dishes and didn't realize because we were from out of town, hungry, and tired. Maybe the owner knew and took advantage of us!? So you must be careful and watch out for the bill. Make sure you ask for the itemized receipt. I don't recommend this restaurant for not being honest. read more

Jimmy and his wife work their tails off answering phones, taking orders, and cooking! Phone lines tend to get busy during open hours, but it'll be worth it to keep calling until you get an answer. Such a hard working, immigrant couple that runs this business, & I love to support when I can. Jimmy is always hooking it up with amazing mango & sticky rice, paired with a nice cold drink every time I order take out. Love coming here. read more

Run--do not walk! It's hard to say which dish we ordered was the best considering all we're so delicious and full of the flavors you imagine when you think Thai. It's difficult to find authentic & tasty Asian food in south west Michigan in general, let alone Thai food. The bottom line is that absolutely nobody does it like Jimmy does it. He travels to chicago at least once a week to get the freshest product & rare spices that you won't find in Michigan or even Indiana. Do yourself a favor. This was my first time trying Bon Thai after numerous people insisted I go, and my only regret is I did not try sooner. This will be a minimum of once a month situation in my dietary rotation from here on out. read more
