These two dishes are absolutely fantastic. Not pictured is the Bakmi noodles (we probably vacuumed it up before we could take a photo). This is probably our top place in town. I was pleasantly surprised to see such a diverse range of cuisine in Kalamazoo. I had never seen a Malaysian and Indonesian restaurant in Michigan until I discovered Rasa Ria. I enjoyed the fried egg on top of the Nasi Goreng Kampung. No one cooks a fried egg in a wok like in Southeast Asian cuisine. It makes the egg puffy and rich in taste. The Curry Puffs and Roti Canai are great. Definitely get a few Roti Canai to eat with the Chicken Curry. It's so good. I wish there were more protein, either meat or seafood, in the Nasi Goren Kampung and the Fried Kway Teow. So many businesses are no longer open for weekday lunch in the post-pandemic landscape, so we were thrilled to find out that Rasa Ris is still serving lunch on weekdays. The prices are very fair-- most lunch entrees run between $6 and $8 and include a substantial portion of rice. You can add a curry puff, which I highly recommend, and a tip and still walk out the door at right around $10. The flavors in all the dishes here are absolutely magical, and the quality of the vegetables and meat is much higher than many of the fast casual Asian food options in the area. I have a feeling I will wind up trying everything on the menu since everything I've had has been exceptional so far. I love this place. Their food is very similar to what I grew up with so whenever I feel a little blue, you will find me here with a huge plate of fried rice, roti canai and curry puff! I've had several dishes over the years from noodles to their special dishes but I always come back to fried rice and curry puffs. Tip :1) When you order in, it's enough for one person to just order pint size for fried rice because it's a huge portion and the best part is $5~. Tip : 2) When you get a take away, you might wanna order quart for fried rice because the box is pretty small. So do the math. We usually order pint for dine in and just take the leftovers home. I've never had Malaysian food before but it felt "homemade" in the best way possible. Comforting and full of flavor. I have stopped by this place several time just to find it full. I finally got there 15 min before it opened and was able to get seated. It is a small place but the food is very good. Very authentic and well made. Prices are great, and serving sizes just right, I cleared my place and was not stuffed to quote a little girl who broken into a bears home it was 'just right'. I will be back to try the many more dishes, The Beef Rendang I had was tender and the rice perfectly cooked. There are reviews the calling the service rude, I would not say rude just a bit more abrupt than most places. I probably wouldn't have tried this place if it weren't so highly regarded by one of my friends. For starters, I'm not a fan of Asian food and second, this location is inconspicuous and easy to miss. With its limited seating, rinky-dink decor, and hybrid storage closet/bathroom, this place is the definition of hole-in-the-wall. But for what this place lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in quality of food and flavor. The food here is *awesome*. My boyfriend and I shared the Beef Rendang, Butter Fried Chicken, and Indonesian Chicken Fried Rice. And DANG, the beef was excellent and perfectly tender like brisket. The fried rice is cooked in sweet soy sauce, making it sweeter than the average. For $22, we enjoyed a small feast that night and had enough leftovers to give each of us lunch the next day. In other words, the prices are unbeatable so treat yourself to a few things. Service wasn't the greatest. One man seemed to handle everything but the cooking, and he couldn't care less about us. Very impersonal, leave-me-alone mentality. When I asked what dishes he recommended, he spewed three titles and walked away as I scrambled to find what he was talking about on the menu. I did witness the cooks come out to chat with people who looked like regular customers, and that was reassuring at least. I think it's hard for hole-in-the-wall places to get a perfect rating. Or at least its hard for me to give them. If you look at my reviews, I'm quick to find faults that drop a place from perfect to almost-perfect. But every now and then, there's a restaurant where it's positive features are so exceptional, where the flavor and quality of the food is so good, that I all but forget where I am, and the ambiance around me. This should be the goal of every small hole-in-the-wall and Rasa Ria should be a model. I'm not that off-put by a tiny restaurant. But Rasa Ria really is little. There are about five tables, some of which are only for two. Initially, I thought that Erika and I would have to take food to go. But we nabbed a corner table and looked through the impressive menu. We asked for a recommendation and ordered exactly what the server recommended: butter fried chicken as well as curry beef (and of course the obligatory fried rice). The second the food hit our table, all skepticism was gone. It was cooked with personality. Every flavor was distinct, even in the mixed dishes. The rice was exceptional, where most rice is bland and mixed. The curry was a punch of spice and flavor, but savory beyond belief. The chicken was the downpoint of the meal, but even it blew most ethnic chicken dishes I've eaten out of the water. All in all, the food there transported me momentarily. Erika and I ate in silence because we were too focused. It's been a while since we've gone out and had, what I could call, a feast. But this was one. And the kicker? Three dishes, twenty bucks. Visiting Kzoo, I was thrilled to find this little hole in the wall here on yelp. So many things to choose from on their menu, and at first I thought I would pick something else, because I do get to indulge in Nasi Lemak in Atlanta at several different restaurants. However, I was really in the mood for the Ikan Bilis Sambal (anchovies chilli paste), and my heart was really set on it, so I settled on this dish. The rice itself was not very "lemak" (rich, in this case, coconutty-rich), which was the first disappointment. However, the biggest disappointment that I had, was that the anchovies in the sambal were minuscule, and did not wow me. The sambal was not bad, but I've been used to seeing and crunching into much bigger anchovies with Nasi Lemak the two decades I was raised in Singapore. The Teh Tarik (pulled tea) tasted like it was made by my beloved late grandfather, who made the best Teh. Maybe someday I'll give this place another go, as I visit Kzoo enough for that. For now, I'm plotting going home and cooking my own Nasi Lemak with anchovies. read more

Kalamazoo seems to be a place where they might only have one restaurant representing a certain type of cuisine, but that one place is excellent. Rasa Ria is a great example of this. Sitting quietly on West Main St. beneath a fading sign that conceded long ago to the passage of time, this place has been serving up delicious Indonesian and Malaysian food for a good many years. It's a tiny place, with only a few tables. Many people get their food to take out. It's run by a husband and wife, and you'll often see one of their boys sitting behind the cash register. Although some of the food have been slightly varied to appease the local palate, most of the dishes have kept enough of its original character to be called authentic without a wink. Examples of this would include one of their fried rice dishes that has coconut milk and anchovies in it (Nasi Lemak) and their spicy house-made chili paste (Sambal) which are both fantastic. Some of their many dishes that I feel are worth pointing out: Roti Canai: A thick pancake accompanied by a curry sauce, this is a great appetizer. There's often curry leftover so I always order an additional pancake to soak up all the delicious sauce. Kerupuk: Not on the menu, these are thick-cut, sort of like chips, crisps really. Light and airy with a great crunch, they can be a variety of flavors (shrimp, garlic, etc.). Different ones are available each day. They are deep fried to order and are great to dip in their house-made Sambal. Rendang: This Indonesian dish is a real treat and very popular. People have their favorites, whether it's beef, chicken or tofu. It takes hours to prepare but the end product is amazing: the Rendang has a very complex flavor which is soaked up by the protein and potatoes. One great thing about this dish: any leftovers taste even better later! Nasi Lemak: This fried rice dish, which I mentioned earlier, is very unique with a rich, savory & sweet flavor and myriad textures made from coconut milk, hard-boiled eggs, cucumber, peanuts and anchovies. Nasi Goreng Corned-Beef: Another great fried rice dish. I always ask for it to be topped with a (optional) fried egg. It can be prepared with either savory or sweet soy sauce. (I like the sweet!) Ayan Goreng Mentega: AKA Butter-Fried Chicken. An astounding dish made with skinless chicken chunks that's fried crispy in butter and sweet soy sauce. This is one of those lick-the-plate clean kind of dishes. They offer this dish at local festivals (like A Taste of Kalamazoo), but I would suggest trying it here first where the crispiness of the chicken is not lost as it is brought straight from the kitchen to the table. A note about festivals: because Rasa Ria is entirely family-run, they close when they participate in festivals, especially during the fall and summer months. If you're making a special trip, be sure to call ahead to ensure that they are open. read more

Rasa Ria really doesn't need yet another five-star review, but that's all I can give them. Kalamazoo is lucky to have a restaurant this interesting in town. I'm not ashamed to say that almost all exposure I've had to Malaysian and Indonesian cuisines has been through Rasa Ria, but if their food is any example, those cuisines can claim me as a fan. Yes, it's a bit of a dive, and that suits me just fine. On weekdays at lunch the dining room is full of local professionals. During dinner it's full of college students. The Beef Rendang here is, for my money, the best beef dish in down. Full of spices (you'll find whole cloves, cardamom pods, star anise, and chunks of stick cinnamon) and packing a moderately peppery punch, this dish is magnificent. I've only had their fish curry (only available as a special) once, but I keep hoping I'll find it again. Their Chicken Curry and Curry Puffs are great. And the Fried Kway Teow. And the Tofu Rendang.
