Given I was at the restaurant during the lunch hour please consider things may be different for dinner when people aren't as rushed and the kitchen isn't preparing as much in advance. I had Kung Po Shrimp with tempura vegetables, udon noodles and egg drop soup. I found all of these items to be lacking the flavor that once embodied Chin Chin. The tempura breading was soft, indicating the veggies were likely prepared in anticipation of lunch rush. The egg drop soup lacked flavor and depth. I felt like the celery or onions were just put on so they were hard. The kung po tasted like well nothing. Disappointed overall as I started eating at Chin Chin when they first opened oh so many years ago. read more

We've been coming to Chinn Chinn since they opened and always consistent great Asian cuisine. We stick with our favorites steamed beef dumplings pot stickers and they give complimentary fried wonton with dipping sauce. Poor customer service, particularly from the owner. This morning, my wife tried calling several times to place a pickup order for later today, but the line was busy each time. I tried as well and got the same result. When I checked their website, I noticed that their posted Saturday hours are 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, so I assumed they simply weren't open yet. I waited until 3:10 PM to call back and place the order. At that point, I was told they were scheduling pickup orders for 8:00 PM. Since they had only been open for about 10 minutes, I asked for clarification. The employee explained that they begin taking phone orders at 8:00 AM, even though they don't open their doors until 3:00 PM. There is no mention of this on their website--only their regular business hours are listed. Because 8:00 PM was too late for us, I declined to place the order. I then called back to speak with a manager, as I wanted to share my concerns about the lack of communication. I made it clear that I wasn't looking for special treatment, but simply wanted to point out what seems like a customer service issue--there's currently no way for customers to know that orders begin being accepted at 8:00 AM. I was connected with the owner and explained the situation. He did say they would consider adding this information to the website, but he didn't seem particularly interested in the feedback. When I asked how customers are supposed to know about the early ordering policy, he responded that people typically find out when they encounter the same issue and are told "for future reference." read more

So, I have been hearing for a long time that Chinn Chinn is all the rage. I didn't really get it. The sweet and sour chicken was good. Fried rice tasted like bland white rice. Garlic potatoes were ok, needed salt. The pu pu platter had good sauces but the items were not great. The chicken satay was very bland. The rangoon shell was thick and doughy, hard to eat. The shells on the other items were better. Fillings in the items were just ok. Cold noodles were ok. The sesame noodles at Hunan Gardens are much better. Maybe the stir fry dishes are better than what I had? The online menu did not match the menu they gave me, and the items I wanted were not on the menu. They didn't have low-sodium soy sauce. The bomb! Kung Pao Chicken is the best in the COUNTRY. no doubt. I've tried to find somewhere better at least 100 times... No one ever even came close... Well, P.F. Chang's is up there too... On their website, they said they were voted best Asian restaurant in Michigan so as an Asian, I had to try it. I was very much unimpressed. It tastes and looks like a slightly elevated Panda Express. The Pupu platter looked fun but the chicken satay was dry, the dumplings and potstickers were very dry, bland, and non-juicy, and the springrolls lacked flavor. Cool noodles and rangoons were good though. Mixed vegetables had wayyyy too much sugar and sauce. Mandarin chicken was okay. Was about a 30 minute wait. Plenty of parking. Service was nice. The worst thing about this place is deciding what to order. I stressed for hours trying to decide for my 4:30 reservation. Luckily you can't go wrong ordering anything off the menu. Let me clarify the confusion on Chinn chinn's reviews. When they opened 20 years ago, it was something truly special. Even the side dish of fried rice was so good I wrote them letters about it, and haven't ever had anything comparable anywhere across the country. It had a strong toasted sesame aroma and I felt they must have made their own sesame oil. Today, their fried rice is that bland stuff with no flavor or creativity, just peas carrots and brown coloration. They used to have lines out the door every day of the week, lunch or dinner, Monday, Tuesday any day. They would even have fresh seafood and gourmet options. Chinese food in America is depressingly pathetic and can be described basically as donut chicken (fried chicken with sugar sauce aka gen Taos, sweet/sour, sesame, orange, it's all the same) and Chinn Chinn showed how wonderful, fresh and complex Asian cuisine for the American palate could be. My guess is, business was a little too good, staff working long hours, and they got burned out. Or, they realized that it is too difficult to make a profit making gourmet food, and dialing all that back and making more basic American Asian food pays the bills easier. So maybe it's not their fault, but more of a complex problem rooted in American culture, politics, bills/rent/food costs etc. The kitchen used to be alive with all kinds of talented and inspired chefs. But today, the people who I saw in the kitchen were there mostly for a paycheck from my perspective. They've spread themselves too thin now trying to do Chinese and Thai and Korean and Japanese.... and their lunch menu mimics typical Chinese restaurants. Now, don't get me wrong, Chinn Chinn is still better than 95% of Chinese (although they are fusion, not Chinese) restaurants, they still have good food, and fresh vegetables-but it's not worth driving far for. I can tell the sauce on my ginger chicken was premade for efficiency....I would consider Chinn Chinn to be a high quality Panda Express-which breaks my heart to say. I had so many memories there. I will admit I am being harsh, don't hesitate to give it a try. It's still clearly better than most and you may be pleasantly surprised. Sadly disappointed- haven't been here since COVID19. It's a little bit of a trip for us to visit, BUT it had always been worth the trip. Same great atmosphere, same great service, and always clean. The disappointing portion was actually the best best attribute of Chin Chin's, the food. To be clear, the food was not bad. It was on par with other decent Chinese restaurants. However over the last 10-15 years this place had historically provided outstanding crazy delicious items. Each item was so flavorful that you could not wait to taste the next dish or appetizer. Everything on the menu was great and you couldn't wait to return to try something else. Sadly that doesn't seem to be true anymore. Something significant has changed due to new ownership or worse cost savings or other. I waited for two visits before I wrote this review because I just didn't want to believe it. My hope in writing this is the original owner becomes motivated to return Chin Chin's to its former hard fought and triumphantly earned glory. read more

All that said, we went to (what I thought was) an Asian fusion restaurant today; amazingly, it has morphed to an Italian/Mexican restaurant with Asian overtones! Steve, is this blasphemy?? Are you kidding me? No, friends, it's not blasphemy and I kid you not!! We ordered the special of the day Miso Carbonara (what??) and Calamari Tacos. Essentially traditional Carbonara with Miso sauce stirred in plus a perfect poached egg on top. Panchetta, great noodles and peas. Clever and unique. Calamari was light and crispy with some chopped jalapenos and other veggies inside flour taco shells. HUGE portion, but the birthday girl got the job done. Tonight the husband and I ventured to Chinn Chinn's in Mattawan, Michigan. The Mongolian beef is by far the best I've ever tasted in my life.  The shrimp fried rice, poo poo platter, mandrian chicken, kung pao chicken, peking steak, steak wraps and krunchies ( these krunchies are amazing with the dipping sauce) I'd recommend also.  When it came to dessert, the blueberry lemon cake and apple crisp pie warmed with caramel sauce...omg yum.  I could have the apple dessert every day.  Can't wait to come back to what the website says is the best asian food in Michigan- and I don't doubt it. read more
