I'm really sad to write this, but the quality of the food has dramatically dropped since I started coming here six months ago. The past several times I've gone, the sushi has tasted off/old. The spicy tuna roll in particular tastes like it was frozen and then recently thawed. Most recently we ordered the tonkatsu ramen, and the meat and eggs were ice-cold. When asked about this, the server told us that the ramen is frozen and thawed to order. Rather than taking it off the bill, they brought out a plate of microwaved meat for us to put in the ramen! As one who appreciates the subtleties of Japanese food and sushi, I had to try the newest sushi place in town. I ordered the baby octopus appetizer. This is one of my favs and typically it's hard to screw up. It was flavorful. Maybe a bit small on the portion for $5.50 but I really can't say anything bad about it. For dinner I ordered the Chirashi. I usually order this dish which is a bowl of sushi rice and mixed sashimi pieces when I'm at a new restaurant as it gives me a true idea of the restaurants quality. Well, it told a story. One with an unhappy ending unfortunately. Chirashi. Well, it was really basic which fits with the restaurant as there is zero ambiance/decor and in fact one corner table had fold up lawn chairs! Additionally, everything comes out in plastic disposable plates or bowls. I'm not a fan of that. A previous response to a review by the proprietor stated they do this to keep costs down. I thought costs were average for the area. Anyways the bowl was basic and the fish was bland. The tuna was tasteless and the salmon and yellowtail were very tough and chewy and obviously inferior parts of the filets. The octopus and shrimp as well as the tamago (egg) were good. There were no frills, vegetables or garnish with the plate nor any roe which is a typical inclusion. I actually left a piece of salmon in the bowl as it tasted very fishy and I'm certain it was farm raised not wild caught. I was quite disappointed. My son ordered the California roll and the spicy tuna roll. Both rolls looked like they were made well and were reasonably priced. However, the tuna roll is $4, the spicy tuna roll (which includes a tiny squirt of spicy mayo) is $5. So, a 25% markup for a squirt of mayo??? Uh...... Anyways, the California was good. No complaints. Overall, I can't recommend this place nor will I be returning. Maybe the more complex rolls will be more satisfying to some but all the "stuff" in them covers any imperfections in my opinion. For $14 a roll go to Maru and have a sushi "experience". It costs about the same. Plus they have a liquor license. Unfortunately, this place is not what I want when I crave sushi. I hate writing bad reviews but I have to be honest and can't recommend this to anyone. On a parting note the staff were very friendly. read more

Went here for my birthday and Wonderful food! Very well priced! Got a big bowl of miso soup for $1.50 and some delicious seaweed salad! Very authentic! They had a daily special which was: One roll that's at least $10 you get a $3-5 roll for $1.50! Seaweed salad was $3.50! Atmosphere: well decorated, only complaint that's causing me to not give it a full 5 stars is that they had a stack of foam cups to pour the water in and they had a couple hairs in the cups which was unpleasant but if say it's worth the trip! I wish I could leave 0 stars lol we have been here since 6:50, it's now 9 pm and we still haven't gotten our rolls. I get that it's Valentine's day and we are a party of 7, but only 5 of us even ordered rolls. They have brought rolls to every table that's walked in except for us, despite putting our order in long before everyone else. We are the last table in here that hasn't been served, despite the fact that 5 tables have arrived and left since we sat down. It's just a terrible way to run a restaurant. Since we are the biggest table we get our food last so you can get smaller tables out sooner? It gets worse, my friend ordered a veggie roll because she is allergic to gluten, and on the menu it does not say that they fry the sweet potatoes in the veggie roll. Met a fellow Elite Yelper here for lunch this week (thanks for the amazing conversation, Tala. It was wonderful to finally meet you in real life). We selected three of the most complex rolls and loved every bite of all three. The prices are super fair (there are a dozen basic rolls for only $3-$5 apiece, it's $8 for moderately complex rolls and $10 -$14 for ultra-fancy). Everything was delicious and the fish was super fresh tasting. We had the Dynamite, Volcano and Crazy rolls. Each was amply filled with fish and had just enough rice to keep them together. Flavor abounded. Decor is ultra basic. I'm guessing they expect many of their orders to be placed to-go because of the proximity to campus. Service was friendly and the meal speed was MUCH quicker than I'm accustomed to at lunchtime at other area sushi spots. My dining companion noted that she'd heard the business was opened by a WMU alumna, so here's hoping being the closest sushi spot to WMU will work well for her. read more

The sushi gods answers my prayers! I just moved to the area and tried other sushi places near by and they all were overpriced and small portioned. Then sushi house opened up so I thought I would give it a try. I got the eel and avocado roll and the Philadelphia roll. Which were both perfectly sized and fresh! Also i ordered octopus and yellowtail sashimi. Both were also very fresh and delicious! And the best part for all 4 items my bill was only $19! I'm originally from the suburbs of Detroit and back home there are tons and tons of amazing sushi joints. The one downside of moving to Kalamazoo has been that the sushi restaurant ratio here is MUCH lower! I absolutely love Maru in downtown Kalamazoo but for what it is, it's completely over priced and not even real japanese sushi. When I came across Sushi House I was a little intimidated because of the outside and bland inside but WOW did they prove me wrong! I cannot believe I've lived in Kalamazoo for 2 years now and this was my first time at Sushi House! This is what REAL Japanese sushi tastes like. Simple. Fresh. Good prices. Everything I've ordered from Sushi House is fresh and the fish just melts in your mouth. Their sushi rice is the perfect consistency. I'm so happy this sushi place opened up in Kalamazoo, I just haven't found the right sushi for here, and let me tell you, this is it. I ordered online, which was super easy, to the point, and good descriptions. It's on campus, perfect for the college kids, and I could smell the green tea walking inside which to me is a great sign. Utilizing their deals you can walk out with two very large rolls that are reasonably priced and fill you up without making you feel guilty about it. All employees were incredibly kind and welcoming and made the selection process easy. They are filling a hole in the Kalamazoo's subparr Japanese cuisine. I just ate here for the first time and was so impressed! I'm a sushi connoisseur and have had sushi at every joint in town, and every city I've ever visted, all over the country. I know good quality sushi and this place has it. I was hesitant to try it but I'm so happy I did, they earned a customer for life. I always order the Rainbnow Roll to tell the quality of fish and I have to say it's on par with the more expensive places around. The ginger was tan not pink which is the higher quality. The portions were generous and at a great price. We also ordered the Cha Cha roll, Spicy California, and the Crazy roll, all of which were absolutely delectable. Went here last night after seeing the good reviews and figured it'd be fun to try such a new place. It definitely seems like more of a carry out place as it was pretty empty. They use a lot of disposable dishes which isn't a huge deal, but feels like a drop in quality compared to other sushi places and is certainly more wasteful. The low price for the rolls was lucrative but when I saw the amount of fish in the rolls paired with the low price, I'm assuming the fish is probably lower grade. Some of the pieces of fish just looked bad and the tuna didn't have much flavor. The tuna nigiri had a spicy taste which was surprising and not good. The amount of rice for the nigiri was also surprisingly small. My girlfriend only ate three pieces of sushi due to the quality of the fish and eel. Maybe the more complex rolls can cover up the low quality with sauce and extras. I tried the nigiri to really test the fish quality and wasn't a fan. TL;DR Seems like low quality fish/eel, but it's paired with a lower price. I prefer to not take risks with raw fish and I'd rather pay more for better fish and real plates. It's also my opinion that these other really good reviews are possibly from people who know the business owners. I could be wrong, but it seems likely, doesn't it? read more
