This is a small intimate space. I can't believe it took me so long to visit. I usually drive across town for Thai. I no longer feel like I have to. The food was delicious with a variety of spice levels so you have control over your spice levels. I had medium plus which was just right for me. If you are not a fan of spice choose mild. I ordered for pickup on a Monday at 5PM. They said it'd be ready in about 20 min...it was ready in 21 min! We ordered (in ranking order): 1. Papaya Salad 2. Veggie Stir Fry with Tofu 3. Pad Thai with Chicken 4. White Rice 5. "Crispy" Chicken Skip the "Crispy" Chicken. It was neither crispy or lightly battered as described in the menu. We ordered our dishes with mild and medium spice levels. Mild spiciness was noticeable, medium spiciness was tolerable. It's cozy and clean inside with seating to accommodate large groups. I recently visited this Thai café, and overall, it was a nice experience. The vibes were good, and the prices were reasonable. We were welcomed with complimentary soup. I wasn't a big fan since it was flavor less. We went ahead and ordered the Tom Ka soup, and it was absolutely delicious!!! They added a touch of yummy tomato paste, which gave it a unique twist. It had a slight kick of spice but was well-balanced. Definitely a must-try! The satay was different from what I expected it was fried instead of grilled. New experience which It was not bad at all The Pad Thai, however, was hands down the best dish of the night! We got it with beef, and the flavors were perfect. The portions were massive, which I loved. We also tried the chickn curry, it was flavored with peanut sauce and felt more like traditional chicken Satay , it didn't stand out to me as much as the Pad Thai or soup to me. So next time, I'd probably just stick to those two. Honestly, The service was very nice and friendly, but it took a long time to get our orders and some more time for our food to arrive. The restaurant was clean, though one side was a bit messy. A good plus is that they have self-service devices for to-go orders, which is convenient. Decent but really expensive. Had the Pad Se with shrimp with 1 spring roll for 16 bucks. They charge 6% extra for using a credit card. It was spicy and salty but not a tremendous amount of other flavors. It was very hot (temp) and I appreciate that. Update 9/26/23 Walked up and carried out. Received fresh spring rolls and the Red Curry Chicken and rice was still hot when I got home. $25 before tip so a little on the pricey side for 1 person. However food was good and fresh and the girl (summing owner's daughter) was very friendly quite knowledgeable and really helpful. I have one recommendation for the restaurant: use wax paper rather then foil for the spring rolls. They are very sticky and difficult to peal off the foil. read more

I think we have tried to try this place 2-3x when I have visited Portage, and it was always closed. This time we got lucky and it was open, and we were able to order takeout. My boyfriend got the Pa Nang curry, with medium spice. I got the cashew dish; normally I'd get mild spice but my friend said usually they're very spicy, so I got no spice, and I regretted it - it was fine but definitely could have used some spice. We also got fresh rolls ("summer rolls") which were very good - they were completely veggie, and came with a fantastic peanut dipping sauce. We ordered a spring roll too and it came with (duck sauce?) and was very good. Our friends got the drunken noodles, with mild+ spice, and the appetizer combo plate. Overall I'd try A Thai again but I'd get mild spice next time. I also thought it could have used more cashews and also chicken, I only got like maybe five cashews in my dish. read more

I have eaten a lot of Thai food. This was among the most interesting as the dishes were so far outside the norm for Thai food. I ordered the green curry and it tasted nothing like curry. I'm not sure what the flavor was. Kind of a sweet, creamy sauce. Not horrible, but definitely lacking curry flavor. My wife ordered the red curry. A little bit of curry taste, but still off. The egg rolls and other fried items ordered by family seemed like they were cooked in an oil that was too heavy. Maybe the oil was old? There were a lot of curious things with this food. I didn't think the prices were unreasonable, but I did not like it. The portions were large and we had take out containers for our leftovers, but I left them sitting on the table. Last time we've been to this place, it was over five years ago. A lot has improved since then but they've always had their great service. We wanted to grab inexpensive dinner that's shareable so we decided to head to Thai cafe. Masaman curry and peanuts curry noodles for dinner sounded the best! We're visiting. I had the Fresh Summer Rolls (NO!), Basil Fried Rice (EHHH!) & 3-Pack Macaron. The peanut sauce was not good to me. Never ordering those Rolls again. The Basil Fried Rice was not what I expected. Take off the bell peppers! There was nothing stir fried about the veggies! Basically, it should've been called Basic Fried Rice with no yum yum sauce, whatever sauce they personally use! The 3-Pack Macaron was Pumpkin Cheesecake, Cookies & Crème & Tiramisu! All were pretty good to me. The Pumpkin Cheesecake was the best for me bc of the texture of the crème was like ice cream whip. I would never visit nothing else like this if I ever came back into the state!!!! I tipped my waitress $9 & some change due to her being hardworking & understanding to the changes at the table bc we were a family of 5. Lunch is a fine time to visit A Thai Cafe. My coworkers, many first time Thai eaters, ate at A Thai Cafe recently. It does get crowded, so I'm glad we went early and snagged a couple of tables to seat 8. The lunch menu offers about 35 set meals priced starting around $9.00, highlighted by dishes such as Gaeng Garee (potato, Spanish onion & carrot in a yellow curry) and Pho Noodle Soup (sliced beef, fresh bean sprout, green onion and cilantro in a home made pho broth). I chose the Peanut Curry Noodle and added chicken as my protein. Their signature peanut curry sauce is to die for and the wide rice noodles were so fresh tasting and tender. A small bowl of soup was also included. While there were some decorations insides the restaurant, large picture windows facing the parking lot and Sam's Club are the main feature of decor at A Thai Cafe'. For the most part, service was fine. Our waitress kept our water glasses filled and our food was delivered with no mistakes for a large group. The dishes may be ordered on a spiciness scale of mild, medium, and hot. For most of us medium was just a little hot for our palates. If you don't know what spice level you're comfortable with, I strongly recommend erring on the side of conservatism. The chefs clearly have a good sense of food and flavor. A Thai Cafe won me over with its tiny charm, not to mention their signature peanut curry sauce. It's worth venturing to if you are newcomer to Thai food. read more

We finally decided to go back to Thai cafe took a break because never could catch the owner cooking and orders weren't coming out right. Tonight she was cooking and oh my god!!! Everything is right. And keep in mind she is heavy on the spice of you want it hot she's gonna make it HOT. Boyfriend got the curry fried rice with beef and xtra hot and I got herb fried rice and I ask to add yellow curry to the rice so they cook it with it 3$ xtra and I also paid another 3$ to have more on the side if I wanted to add more it's so yummy! 10/10. Pad ped is my go to- their spice level is not like other Thai places and the general flavor profile is one note. Tonight was especially disappointing as the crab rangoons seemed like they've been sitting under a heat lamp for days. We tried the place based on some other reviews and was very happy we did. The place is a cozy place and the staff was very friendly. The variety of food was good. The Peanut Curry was good but could have used a bit more peanut flavor. The Pad Thai was very good. I will be stopping here again. My daughter and I went to A Thai Cafe for lunch on a Wednesday. We met just after 12:00pm and the place was fairly full. There were perhaps 4 or 5 tables open. It is self seating so we chose a 2 top against the wall. The decor was fairly simple with several Thai theme multi media art pieces on the walls The tables and chairs are fairly simple and plain. We were waited on promptly with menus and waters. As we'd previously looked at the drink menu online I ordered a green hot tea and my daughter a plain water. We both made our lunch choices fairly quickly. I chose a chicken Pad Pak, and my daughter a cashew beef noodle dish. She had it prepared with mild heat and I asked for medium heat. The dishes were preceded with a small bowl of soup which was tasty, much like egg drop soup with tofu. The dishes came pretty quickly for the amount of people eating in the place at this time. The plates were presented nicely and were attractive. The spice was just what each of us were expecting. Each dish had it's own unique flavor though I felt the beef dish my daughter had was more flavorful. The beef was a deeper flavor then the chicken and the cashews added just the right crunch and saltiness. The total tab for the meal was $20 for the two meals. A bit on the high side for a lunch menu. The food was good but it would be nice to get a price break for lunch. Price/value is the reason for my 4 star rating. The waitstaff was nice enough and did not become a nuisance, but did check on us. I enjoy Thai food and I may return for a dinner just to try another dish. But I agree with some of the other reviews the price could be more accommodating for lunch portions. read more

So glad to have finally had the opportunity to try this restaurant! Staff was very friendly and attentive. Even after we had paid the bill and were chatting, they continued to fill our waters. Food was delicious! We had the Bangkok fried rice, pad thai, pa nang, and masaman tilapia. And also tried the crab rangoons and tom kha (not pictured). The only complaint was my dish was not spicy at all (I like a little warmth), while my husband's was (he is VERY sensitive to spicy and does not like it). Will definitely go back, but make sure to explain how much my husband does not like spice, and that I do. read more

This is not just another strip mall restaurant. I love this place, which I eat at at least once a week. Their menu has good variety and the dishes are always well-prepared and delicious. Spice level is adjusted to your liking. No alcohol is available, but their Thai iced tea is a good accompaniment. We came back to "A Thai Cafe" after years of passing it by. They have overhauled the interior and warmed the place up. Everything is clean and orderly, parking is easy and access is straightforward. I ordered the Tom Yum with Chicken and the Pad Thai with Chicken. The food was delivered on time from the kitchen and everything was uniformly hot and fresh. We ordered a side of steamed broccoli and they were prepared perfectly, not wilted, and not raw. We were a little cautious since our previous experience wasn't so great, but now, whatever has happened has improved this restaurant immensely. The staff were kind and friendly, the desk staff very welcoming. An hour to close and this place is almost to capacity. It's a very good sign. The food was great, but the only ding, and not enough to take a star, is the prices are just slightly too high for the food delivered, maybe a dollar or two lower and this place would hit the sweet spot. We'll definitely come back, and I think other folks who are looking for good Thai in Kalamazoo should check this place out. If you went before and weren't impressed, try it again. read more

This is a wonderful place if you love Thai food or you want to try it. The family who owns it is wonderful. The food is handmade and super fresh. If you like hot food, like really spicy food, this place can make it as hot as you can take it. I love spicy and hot food but I cannot handle more than medium spice.
