Looking for a restaurant close to the Rio Theatre for a pre-show dinner, had heard good things about Chancho when they were at another location, they've been on the Drive 3 years now. Managed to catch the tail end of Happy Hour, which goes to 6:00, and ordered some bevy's and food from that menu. Ordered some local beers on tap, my wife enjoyed the Margarita. Started with the Guacamole and homemade tortilla chips, the guacamole was fresh and tasty, the chips were firm and were not oily. The Chilaquiles was a filling dish, tortilla chips on top of their green salsa ( red was also available, not as spicy), accompanied with pork shoulder, beans and sour cream, this dish is a must try. Also on the table was the Birria taco, 2 good sized tacos loaded with meat and a bowl of broth to dip in, my dish was the Pork Belly Torta, a good size bun with a firm crust, the pork belly was awesome, cooked well, not dry, and pouring on the green salsa elevated the Torta, would have that again. Finished off with the Churros, an order comes with 4 sticks, covered in cinnamon sugar and perfect when dipped in the caramel sauce.

This is my favorite place in Vancouver for Tacos. I love that the place feels like an authentic tortilleria. Food is always good, well priced and portion sizes make sense. 1/2 lbs is good for 2 people. Last time I was here we ordered the al pastor (adobada) which was great, good spice level as well. Add the side sauces if you like it hotter. Ambiance is very casual, but this is preciselly the way it should be. Service is very fast and friendly. Just make sure to remember to order when you walk in as orders are placed at the counter.

Really enjoyed the experience but next time I'll get the Birria Tacos like my kids chose. Had been wanting to come here for a while so glad my kids decided on it as we were walking by. Great friendly service! Good clean bathroom.

Just came here for a quick bite. Friendly service. You order at the counter and they will bring to your table. Portions pretty generous.

Price/quality (4/4): I ordered the maciza and it was very tasty. The meat was tender and well-seasoned, just like it should be. They do have a limited menu though, which probably helped keep costs down without compromising on quality. Service (1/1): This restaurant is set up differently in that customers need to pay up front, but it was otherwise friendly and effective. Would I come here again: Yes

Colourful and fun vibe. The staff was all polite and everyone always had a smile. I don't dislike the system where you order at the front but it did mean it got congested near the door where everyone was waiting to order. Staff was pretty good about clearing tables quickly and the place, including the washrooms, seemed clean. I got the 1/4 lb of mixed veggie tacos and a carlota de limón. The fresh tortillas tasted amazing but got soggy very quickly. The way the tacos are plated is visually pleasing but doesn't help with this - the first tortilla tore apart as soon as I tried to pick it up. It would keep the tortillas fresher if the taco filling was served on the side, and I think it would also be easier to assemble the tacos this way. But the tacos were very tasty, and it was fun to assemble them when the tortillas were not giving out. I liked the assortment of salsas, they all tasted fresh, and the beans were a nice side. The carlota de limón was wonderful, it was sort of a texture similar to tiramisu, but with a strong lime flavour. I would come back. Next time I'll try something different.

Grabbed dinner with a friend here a few weeks ago and for drinks, 1/2 lbs of pork belly with tacos and guacamole with chips it was about $80 after tax/tip I liked the vibe - it was casual - you order at the front host/hostess station and they bring your food to you. Not everyone is used to that but I found it manageable. They refilled my water regularly. Washrooms were clean which were nice and the restaurant area though dimly lit was well maintained. Definitely would recommend the pork belly tacos - they were surprisingly filling for 1/2 lbs even though pricier than some other places it tasted good which was important. Guacamole was also super solid and chips were decent - not stale like some taco places around town. Would go again - but watch out on ordering as those costs can add up. One of the patrons at another table grabbed a slice of pizza from next door and ate it outside before coming back in to join their dining companions.

I went here with some friends for a late night post-dinner hangout and since we were a large group, a lot of places cannot really seat a large group without reservation on a Saturday night, as expected. Here, it was not busy at all, so we went right in and got some food and drinks. I tried the campechano set and the pricing is very high for what you get for quality. Maybe because I grew up in SoCal so I am spoiled with Mexican food, but here, the quality is not really up to par and overpriced. 3 tacos for 16.50 (1/4 lb) and goes up from here, it is quite a bit pricey. There is decent amount of meat but the tacos felt a bit bland and the tortilla is a bit stale so it was very hard to cut into. The server doesn't put much effort and just asks us to do a good fraction of their work with ordering, etc.

Came here one afternoon for drinks. There was no one else here which could have been a sign. You have to order up front when you walk in and pay at the register, then they will bring your order out to you. Pretty inconvenient if you want to to sit down and just order things like at a regular restaurant. Needless to say this was a big factor in us not staying much longer than our first round of drinks. Who wants to get up order, pay, sit down, repeat over and over again? Got a couple of margaritas that were just OK. There is an open wall between inside and outside so whatever temperature it is outside is the same inside, plus there were a lot of fruit flies inside.

This is my 3rd time going to Chancho! My first time was at their Yaletown location, and I've been twice now to their Commercial Drive location. Service and quality are still stellar! It's a casual place; you go in and order first, then seat yourself. My friend and I split 1/4 lb each of veggie mix and pork mix. Each order comes with 4 tacos. My favourite part of Chancho are their side dippings and add-ons. I basically ate the beans side dish on its own at the end of my meal haha. The pork mix is tender and flavourful, with a few pieces of fat embedded to keep it moist. The veggie mix is flavourful too! The first time I ate it, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The only thing I dislike is the presentation of the tacos. The 4 tacos are layered on top of each other, fanned out, and the meat/veggie filling put on top. It's hard to get an even distribution of filling to taco, because the top one always has the most sauce/liquid. It's also a bit clunky to pull out the taco and grab filling to put in it. Service is very friendly and welcoming! Everyone has a smile.

We got -1/4 Pound Panza (Pork Belly) (17.50$): I think I liked this one the best. Thanks to the fattinness of the pork belly, it had the most flavour/was not dry. -1/4 Pound Campechano (Pork Shoulder+Belly) (15.50$): Was ok, one again-felt like it could've had more flavour. -1/4 Pound Al Pastor (Pork + Pineapple) (?$): Surprisingly liked this one the least even though it's usually my favourite. Felt like it lacked a bit of flavour/moisture, and the portion of pineapple wasn't enough for all the tacos. Also was missing the coleslaw. The tortillas: they were quite good, however they were completely falling apart. The presentation, albeit aesthetically pleasing, was quite inconvenient given that all 4 tortillas were piled under the meat. As such, instinctually (to guarantee an adequate tortilla to filling ratio), you might think to distribute the filling before digging in. However, if you do this, the tortillas will weaken due to the juices of the filling, resulting in anticipating a bite just for it to escape your mouth at the last second. Also, I think I would prefer for the filling to come pre-distributed per tortilla. I think overall it was quite expensive for what you're getting. I think there's potential, but was a bit disappointed.

We did walk in and had brunch here this morning. No lineup. We scanned a QR code at the front of the restaurant. In the end, the server introduced what we should be ordering. We thanked him for his recommendations. It was our first time here and didn't know what's good. We ordered veggie and pork tacos as well as Chilaquiles con Huevos. All of the dishes were great. We usually eat Mexican food in US but rarely in Canada. The service was great. The server was very caring and attentive. We didn't ask for extra plates but he noticed we were sharing food, so he brought us extra an additional plate and fork. The ambiance and background music perfectly matched the Mexican cuisine. We enjoyed the brunch here. The interior design was on par with we expected to see on Commercial Drive. Also, the washroom was clean. I would recommend friends and family could come here for brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hours.

I have long said that Vancouver has a dearth of good Mexican food. Chancho is doing its part in proving me wrong. My friend and I ordered a half pound of pork shoulder and a half pound of pork belly. The pork shoulder was great--meaty and delicious, but the pork belly... the pork belly is what I'll be dreaming about. It was melt-in-your-mouth soft with perfectly fatty bits. On top of all that were three fantastic salsas with varying levels of heat, hearty black beans, and some pickled cabbage and lime to balance it all out. It didn't look like much with an eye test, but it was surprisingly filling! Service is casual, you order at the front as soon as you walk in (so be ready). I enjoyed the bright pink exterior, but didn't love the plasticky tablecloths. All in all a great spot for lunch but not super conducive to hanging out for much longer!
