BUCKLE UP BECAUSE WE'RE GOING FOR A RIDE! (Sorry for yelling) I just happen to be walking by Tamaly Shop thinking I'd grab a quick bite. Left questioning whether I've ever actually eaten food before this moment. The mole tamale was so good I experienced the five stages of grief after finishing it... then immediately walked back up and ordered another one like a man possessed. Rich, deep mole, perfect texture, wrapped like a tiny gift from the gods themselves. The salsa verde tamale? Bright, comforting, and somehow tasted like someone's grandma personally believes in me. Barbacoa tacos were ridiculous too. Tender, flavorful, no unnecessary nonsense -- just tacos that make you stop talking mid-conversation and stare into the distance for a second. And the horchata? I would trust that horchata with sensitive personal information. At one point I looked around and realized everyone in the restaurant had the same expression: pure peace. Interesting place near Broadway. I went there for a chocolate decorating workshop and making tamaly. I got here a bit early and grabbed a tortillas soup, chicken mole and horchata for dinner. It's a really cute women run shop. They make the tamales from scratch in house. The rich mole and strong corn flavor tamales was very comforting to eat. The ginger in the tortillas soup was a nice touch. It was a cold night so the soup definitely warms you up. I highly recommend coming here for their food. We joined one of the workshops at Tamaly Shop and honestly it was such a wonderful experience! We got to make and decorate our own chocolate calaveras and even tried making tamales from scratch. The staff were super friendly, patient, and really took the time to explain the cultural meanings behind everything. You could feel the love and pride in what they do -- it wasn't just a class, it was a full cultural experience. The space itself is cozy and colorful, filled with Mexican art, snacks, and warm vibes. You can tell it's a place built from heart. After the workshop, we stayed to enjoy some tamales and drinks -- everything tasted fresh and comforting. The dessert tamales were my favorite (don't skip the chocolate or pineapple ones!). I took one of my foodie friends along, and we both loved it. The market had a fun vibe, and the food and drinks were fantastic. We tried the Mangonada - a sweet, tangy drink that's a must-try! My friend even bought a Mangonada mix to make it at home. The tamales were delicious, with both savory and sweet options, so there's something for everyone, including vegetarians and vegans. I've never had tamales before so I was excited to check out this place! The staff was very nice and explained to me what the different menu items were. My friend and I shared a couple of dishes and it was very filling. The chicken tamale came with mole sauce which I thought tasted like chocolate so it was a bit strange for me. However, I found out that mole IS made with chocolate. I think that the chilaquiles were really good and had a nice spicy taste to it. They have 4 vegan tamales ($7.80), which is great given that many Mexican places don't have vegan options. They also do brunch with many veganizable options, which I'll have to return for. I ordered one each to go of the tofu mole, mashed potato with jalapeño, and black bean. The order was ready in 10-15 minutes. All 3 were good, with the clear highlight being the tofu mole. They give you 3 condiments on the side -- pickled onions, mild salsa, and a mole sauce. The additional mole sauce was delicious and amped up the already very tasty tofu mole tamale. I'd been wanting to try this place ever since they first opened and finally managed to make it over there. My daughter and I went there for brunch on the day of their anniversary celebration. We were a bit too early to enjoy any of the festivities but actually, it suited us better as we don't really like being in crowded places. Featured here: Tamal Plate Quesadilla Taco Horchata I chose the Mashed Potato and Jalapeno tamale for my Tamal Plate. Sometime last year I had bought some Tamaly shop frozen tamales from Renzullo Market and I was quite satisfied with them when I had them at home; these were so much better than the frozen ones! Tamal Plate came with a small cup of Cafe de Olla which was a sweet coffee beverage. I was told that I could have it refilled if I wanted, but I chose to just have the one cup. I'm usually not a coffee drinker but I loved the Cafe de Olla! It was sweet with notes of cinnamon in it. Oh, our server was kind enough to let us sample the "Dirty Horchata" which was an Horchata with a Cafe de Olla shot. Sooo good! The Quesadilla Tacos were pretty much what they sound like: Taco sized quesadillas.They were the cutest looking quesadillas we've ever seen! My Tamal Plate meal was wonderful but I was slightly disappointed as it's written on the menu that all brunch items are supposed to be served with homemade pan de dulce ( a Mexican pastry ) and my meal did not come with this. I mentioned it to the server and she couldn't seem to understand what I was talking about at first. When I pointed it out to her on the menu, she apologized and said they didn't have that pastry at the moment. She brought me 4 cookies in place of the pastry. While my daughter and I enjoyed the cookies I would have much preferred to have the pan de dulce pastry that was written on the menu. Hard to imagine that they would have run out of it so early in the day, and can't think what other reason there could be for them not having it when it's an item that is supposed to accompany any brunch item (of which there are quite a few) on the menu. On the day of their anniversary celebration too, I would have thought that they'd make sure to be well stocked on all items. Aside from the missing pastry we very much enjoyed our meal here and I am now in love with the Cafe de Olla drink! Very disappointing experience. I'm not sure they know what a torta Mexican sandwhich is. Very over priced and all it had was some shredded pork and onion on a bun. I'm not sure if they made the order incorrect but the portion was the size of a dinner roll bun and not worth $20. read more

Tamaly Shop now has their own market on Main. It's a casual New Mexican restaurant that also sells a small selection of Mexican pantry items (mostly sauces and seasonings) as well as their own prepared foods. It has the quintessential atmosphere of a Mexican restaurant with upbeat Latin music and colourful decorations. The staff is very friendly, and although it's counter service in that you order and pay at the counter and seat yourself, the service is more attentive than most counter-serve places - the woman working checked in with all the customers to make sure they were enjoying their food. This time, I tried the mashed potato with jalapeño tamal in the Mexican bento box. The bento concept is fun and the tamal was delicious, as were all the sides. They served it with a small bowl of pickled vegetables which I really liked - they worked well as a topping for just about any of the components of the box. I had an adelita for dessert which was a great treat - the concha was fresh and soft, slightly warmed up but not so hot that it melted all the ice cream, and the presentation was nice. All of their agua frescas are excellent - I've tried most of them at this point since they still have a booth at the farmer's market. Horchata is my favourite, but out of the fruity ones, I like the cucumber with lime the best. It looks like they have a few on rotation to serve by the glass in the restaurant, but all are available bottled if the one you want isn't featured. The only thing to improve on in the restaurant is the use of disposable cutlery and plastic cups. They have proper plates and mugs for hot drinks, so it would be nice if they could also provide silverware and cold drink glasses. It looks like they have more reusable foodware now than they did when they first opened though, so maybe they're still in the process of transitioning from the food stand operation. read more

The Tamaly Shop has moved into the former Kafka's space at Main and Broadway. They now have a seating area and counter service. I went and checked it out today. The place itself is clean and bright, the booths are comfortable. They offer a selection of hot sauces, salsas and local and imported Mexican goods for sale, including a cooler full of fresh tortillas, chorizo, packages of tamales to take home, etc. I ordered a pork and salsa Verde tamale in the Tamal Bowl. It's a bowl of rice, beans, tortilla chips and a tamale of your choice covered with crumbled cheese and other toppings. The flavours were really great. Everything was really tasty. There was a large selection of locally made salsas to add that were very delicious. It was served in a compostable takeaway container with a compostable fork. I would have preferred if a proper plate and cutlery were an option but I was there close to closing so maybe they had already started the last run of dishes for the night. read more
