Barons & Bikes - Tour Guide John

"Pedal minions!" shouted tour guide John…read more That's part of the whimsical charm found on Cincinnati's historic Pedal Wagon tour: Barons & Bikes. Presented by the folks at American Legacy Tours, Barons & Bikes takes riders on a trip around Newport's Historic East Row to hear tales of the Wiedeman Brewery, Mr. Kroger, and horrific tales of dismemberment at local saw mills. The Eastern Row is filled with historic, grandiose houses and Victorian-style churches. Plus the landscaping is gorgeous with greenery hanging over the streets. Photography is permitted on the tour, with the front right side being the best place for pictures. For a new tour, it's off to a great start. I would like to hear more stories about history, such as the architecture or why the East Row developed the way that it did. It would be more interesting than hearing about where the founder of the Hofbrauhaus goes to church. Also, throw in some information about the debauchery and gangsters. Yes, this company also hosts the Newport Gangster Tour, so it doesn't want to give the same information on both tours. Some overlapping wouldn't hurt though; just pick the most interesting or little-known stories. Afterwards we were dropped off at our origin at Hofbrauhaus, just in time for lunch. The pretzels and bier cheese are delicious, as was their signature Hefeweisen. One complaint though: parking. Upon arriving at Hofbrauhaus, the lot had their Valet service set up. There would be a $5.00 charge to park in a lot that is normally free. The attendant mentioned that there is always a charge on Saturdays. On a Saturday morning? Minimal people were patronizing the restaurant at this time, making Valet unnecessary. Folks who are taking the Pedal Wagon Tour should not have to pay $5.00 to park in the lot for an hour. Perhaps guests could show their receipt of ticket purchase to park for free? Cost: $20.00 per person Tour Time: 1 hour Tips: - If you must bring a purse, take a small bag. There is no where to store aside from the counter top while you pedal. - Be sure to wear sneakers. - There is a 5'3" height requirement to pedal the bike. The Pedal Wagon does have a few rider seats for short folks. At 5'7" I was having to stretch a little to reach the pedal at its lowest. - Tipping the tour guide is encouraged, so bring some cash.

I wish that the seat height was adjustable as even average leg length people had a trouble at times peddling. Not a big deal. I did like learning about some of the lesser known homes and businesses in the area. There is so much history and John does a good job of inserting humor and sarcasm. This type of tour is one you would only need to do once. The bar crawl version this company offers would be great for bachelor/ette parties. The wagon needs to have some advertisement on it... like the name of the company and their website...

Cons, getting a working touch screen was challenging. On Memorial Day!! no one was available to help. If you are riding solo, not such a big deal. I had my 3 grand daughters with me. The chaos trying to get 4 bikes was so irritating they wanted to just ride back home and quit rather than go through this every couple of hours. Permanently setting e-bikes to Turbo in a city with lots of traffic is insane. I have bad knees for walking but with e-bike assist it is much easier to be mobile. I was very disappointed in my week of biking with my grand daughters.

It's $100 per year for unlimited one hour bike rides (Honestly, i typically only use them for transit and have never had one out longer than 20ish minutes at a time (It's shocking how quick it is to get around on a bike in the city). I live in Covington and will grab one in Mainstrasse and can be downtown in nearly the same amount of time it takes to drive and find parking for a car. I really love their electric bikes as well. Though be warned, once you've taken out one of the electric bikes you will be spoiled. Sometimes the batteries will be dead on them so be sure to check the battery life before you take it out. Be careful when riding, especially over streetcar tracks. Your wheel falling in the track WILL result with you on the ground (self-proven). I do wish there were more stations in NKY in residential areas. Overall, I love Redbike and can't wait for warmer weather to ride again more!

I did the one where we acted like we were pedaling and had a blast with my friends and family. You stop at served bars along the way to get off and just vibe out. You can hook your phone up and play your own music and bring your own beer and wine as long as it isn't in a glass bottle. I did it for my birthday but you can do it any time of day of the year and still have the best time!

My introverted heart was borderline freaking out but we had the absolute best time ever. I'll start out with Ben, our driver. He was professional yet fun, funny, caring and all around a good dude. I'm not sure if you can request drivers but I'd love to have Ben along for every ride. The company supplied Mardi Gras decor for us to decorate the wagon and make it our own. They even provided beads for us to toss out during the parade. This made it so awesome as all the other floats were also tossing beads. Well done! Ben made sure we knew the deals of each spot we stopped at afterwards. We ended the night at Molly Malone's and Smoke Justis before heading back to Goodfellas for pizza. Process is easy; find your wagon (instructions given upon booking), show your signed waiver and ID, then be on your merry way. 10/10 would recommend!
