My husband, a long time friend of his, and I had a late dinner here recently. I food here is excellent. And dishes marked three stars are REALLY hot!!!
It was my husband's and my first time there, but my husband's friend had been there many times before and absolutely loves it, so he recommended that we go there. He did warn us that anything marked three stars is extremely hot.
The restaurant looks a little run down from the outside, but the dining area is ok (washrooms are really run down, but I'll talk about that later). We arrived past 8pm on a Friday and the place was packed. We were greeted right away and luckily there were a few tables still available.
They brought us a complimentary basket of shrimp chips, which were crispy and only mildly "shrimpy". They gave us water right away as well. (They were not able to renew their liquor license this year, so there is no alcohol available here). Throughout the meal they were really good at constantly refilling water, which is a good thing considering how hot their dishes are.
We started off with the Combo Satay Kajang ($11.40) which was 2 skewers each of chicken, beef and lamb. I only tried the chicken and beef and both were delicious. The marinade was really flavourful and the peanut sauce was very fragrant. The amount of meat on the skewers though was not a lot. Each piece of meat was really tiny. While incredibly tasty, I found it extremely expensive for the price.
We also had the Chicken in Garlic Sauce ($12.75) which was a one star dish (stars denote spiciness), the Indonesian Beef Curry ($14) which was a two star dish, and the Chili Jumbo Shrimp ($17.50) which was a three star dish. We also got a platter of Traditional Rice ($6) which turned out not to be enough so we ordered an additional bowl ($2).
The Chicken in Garlic Sauce to me was not spicy at all. It had onions, carrots and bamboo shoots in it. Lots of garlic flavour. The chicken was white breast meat. This was my favourite dish of the 3 we ordered. The portion was rather small though.
The Indonesian Beef Curry had what I considered the ideal amount of spice. Enough for some kick, but not burning your mouth. There were carrots, green peppers and onions in the curry as well. Some of the beef cubes were fatty. I prefer leaner meats, so while I liked the flavour of this dish the most, the fatty meat made it my least favourite dish. Portion size also small.
The Chili Jumbo Shrimp should be 10 stars in spiciness. This dish made my nose run, my tongue burn and it made me cry. However, the flavour was phenomenal. There's plenty of chili, galangal, shrimp paste, garlic and lemongrass in the sauce. I could only eat 2 shrimps because it was way too hot for me. This dish had 10 jumbo shrimps in it covered in the fiery paste. There are no vegetables or anything else in this dish. If you can handle spice, you will love this dish.
The traditional rice is steamed Basmati rice with some mild spices and topped with fried onions, almonds and raisins. It was very tasty. Most of it was fluffy but I noticed a few clumps of rice.
The washrooms are downstairs (not wheelchair accessible) and the stairwell is not heated (it was freezing in the stairwell). The women's washroom was heated but still colder than the rest of the restaurant (my husband said that the men's washroom was not heated). It was functionally clean, but looked run down and old, so it looked dirty. I did like that there was a garbage can outside of the washroom so you could open the washroom door with a paper towel and throw the paper towel away after you leave, so you don't have to dirty your hands on the door knobs.
Service is excellent. Very attentive and friendly.
The food here is incredibly tasty, but portion sizes are small and prices are high in my opinion. However, I don't know if you can really get tasty food in huge portions for cheap here in Ottawa (I'm from Toronto, so I'm spoiled in that way). On taste alone, Chahaya Malaysia would get a 5-star rating from me.
There is free parking behind the restaurant. It's a bit tricky to get to the restaurant if you are coming from the east, you will have to make a left turn across Montreal Road (the median is flattened there, so you can do it if traffic permits). Better to approach it from the west though.
