Djakarta Taste - bakwan

Djakarta Taste

The Short Version: Indonesian restaurant sharing real estate…read morewith an old-school diner. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Service is pleasant but a bit slow. The Long Version: Djakarta Taste used to be at 41 blvd Fournier but is now at 122 rue Eddy, sharing it's space with Chez Barbe. Chez Barbe is at the front and has an old-school diner vibe, while Djakarta Taste is at the back and has a more Far East vibe. My husband and I had a late lunch here on one of our "Gatineau Adventures" lol. I had the beef Laksa $14.50 and my husband had the Shrimp Satay $14.50. I also ordered an Es Campur ($7.50) to go at the end of our meal. I enjoyed the Laksa. It had noodles, slices of beef, a fried egg, baby Bok Choy, and bean sprouts. The broth was nice and spicy and had a rich coconut milk flavour. My husband liked his shrimp satay. He got 3 skewers of small shrimps, bean sprouts, leaf lettuce, a tomato wedge and longtong (cubes of pressed rice). To our surprise, the longtong was served cold. I think it would have been better hot. My husband really liked the spicy peanut sauce that was served with the satay. Es Campur is a shaved ice dessert with jelly and fruits in coconut milk. It's similar to Vietnamese Che, Malaysian Ais Kacang and Filipino Halo Halo. I find for these types of desserts, each restaurant's version is slightly different. The version at Djakarta Taste had rainbow jelly, pandan noodles, watermelon, apples, dragon fruit and coconut milk. Although I'm not sure if what I was served was actually Es Campur or Es Buah, lol. Nonetheless, it was good, but the straw was too narrow and I wasn't given a spoon so was unable to eat the chunks until I got home, lol. They should consider serving it with a thick bubble tea straw and give a spoon when preparing it for takeout. Service was pleasant, but a bit slow. The place is not fancy, but serves tasty food at reasonable prices. I'm interested to return to try their Martabak and Nasi Padang. Street parking only, which is free and plentiful on the weekends. My apologies i can give only 5 stars , they deserve 10 for their enthusiasm , the quality of dishes…read moreand their customer service . Its a small shop with a big heart . I run foodie meetups in ottawa and Indonesian food has been on my radar for quite some time , I chanced upon Djakarta taste when i was hyped by an article on times on the rise of indonesian food and was frantically searching for the same in the locality . I gave them a call and the reception was excellent . We did setup a saturday for a small group of Picky foodies to try the food and we are sooooo glad we did I will quickly dive into a Pros and Cons list Pros 1. The Traditional dishes - Try to get them just the way they are , read up about the ingredients and try them in authentic form , they ace it, like nasi padang, mi goreng , bakwan . 2. The staff : Warm , welcoming , homely. They go 100% to make you feel at home 3. The variety of savory : The spread is amazing . Can be improved 1. Space if you plan to dine in : Small shop , they will do their best , however cut them some slack considering its run from a home 2. Turnaround time : some dishes like shrimp takes time , the chef is super fast but it is one person , so be aware of the turnaround when you place a large order 3. Parking space behind is limited , so plan accordingly Once again they are suited now for a takeaways and they will entertain dine in for small groups . But the fooood is just amazing . try it . Indonesian at its best My fav dishes : nasi padang , bakwan, mi goreng, ikan bakar

I really liked the place, the food, the service and I would come back…read more Better food then I had in Bali It reminds me of the strengths of Malay food,

Simply great . I went here with a group of 12 with mixed…read morefeelings after seeing a slight slump in reviews over past couple of months . We ordered the beef rendang , the mixed satay , the five star chicken , the Bali beef , the chili jumbo shrimp , the spring roll , platters of traditional rice , couple of fish dishes. We did not order any noodle dishes although reviews say theyare good Quickly to the pros and cons Pros 1. The tassste : of course my fav was jumbo chili shirmp , with a sweet tangy taste and spice tastes amazing with the rice ; if you are ordering it take it with the white rice and not traditional . The traditional is basmati fried and white is boiled rice Shortly behind that comes beef Bali sautéed with onions . The whole corianders fried wit this dish just hit the right notes and the onions were sweet enough , the sauce was great , the beef rendang was a little too spicy for 3 stars and I won't say that the five star chicken is a must fry , but it's dilute sauce so it goes pretty well with rice 2. The consistency / all dishes were consistently great The not so special ones are as follows imho The five star chicken , the snicker pie and the shaved ice dessert 3. The service : quick and lot of knowledge will be shared if you ask the right questions , they don't push sell , the lady who served was very gracious and kind 4. Complimentary shrimpy fryums 4. Parking : ample space around the building . Singlenstandalone buliding Cons Desserts : selection can be better Payment /'you have to queue up at the counter We had such a wonderful experience will def I help be back for more
