    Beef Thali $30
    Jennifer P.

TLDR: Delicious Indian food. Easily one of the best Indian restaurants in Ottawa. Nice ambiance too. My husband and I went to Thali with a couple of his friends. I had been to the owner's original restaurant, Coconut Lagoon, on St. Laurent Blvd, about 16-18 years ago (and it's still there), but it was my first time at his second restaurant here on O'Connor St. I recall that Coconut Lagoon was ok, but I wasn't blown away. However, I was blown away by Thali. I really enjoyed my meal there. I got the Thali ($30). You get to choose 1 meat and I chose beef. My husband got the Maha Thali ($35) which gives you a choice of 2 meats and he got shrimp and lamb. Each Thali came with basmati rice, one paratha, one papadam, a white creamy potato curry, a tomato-based vegetable curry, a yellow daal curry/soup, a tomato-based mushroom curry, a coconut and potatoes chutney, raita and a mango tapioca pudding. Mine had a tomato-based beef curry and a sweet curry that I think has mango in it, along with potatoes and other vegetables. My husband's Thali had a mango shrimp curry, and a tomato-based lamb curry. None of the curries were spicy, but they were bursting with flavour. And they all tasted so radically different from each other. So the Thali allowed us to try an excellent variety of curries that varied from one another. I enjoyed everything, except maybe the raita, but I'm not a fan of raita to begin with. Service was courteous. And the decor is pretty. It would be a good date spot. They have both indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting). Street parking only. (108)

This restaurant is near a bunch of office buildings, so there's not much life or views nearby. It is, however, very nice inside and was very full when I got here late one weekday night. It seems like a good spot for business lunches/dinners or to celebrate a special occasion. I got the lamb mappas, because I love lamb. It was tender and the coconut curry paired well with the meat. The poratha was made very well and definitely an essential with the curry. The rice was dry which was a little disappointing. Overall, I'm giving 4 stars for the cost; you're definitely paying more for the ambiance of this place rather than large portions/amazing food.

Excellent service and food. Very tasty and the thali plate is just awesome. Various taste, textures with hot and cold options. Recommend this restaurant in downtown core of Ottawa.

Thali by Coconut Lagoon is another of Chef Joe Thottungal's restaurants. I used to go to Coconut Lagoon when I lived in the East End before the pandemic, and I am glad Thali us near where I live now. I consider this one of my locals and come here in September twice, once for my birthday dinner and another for lunch with someone I know from out of town. I tend to get the thalis, which is 8 small dishes where you can choose the main, and comes with sides a dessert, popodum, paratha, and rice.

The Food and Service are excellent. Beautiful ambience and cozy place with elegant interiors in the heart of downtown. Walkable distance from Parliament hill, but I suggest to check weather in winters if planning to walk. Not easy if one has kids. There is no parking provided by hotel (typical downtown) and has street parking just opposite to hotel (only limited spots). $1.75 for 30 minutes and free on Saturday / Sunday. I have ordered Parotta and Vegetarian Thali. Both tasted good. Vegetarian thali had some great curries like plantain stew, broccoli curry etc. (suitable even for kids not spicy). Dessert (Vermicelli Kheer) was outstanding. Over all perfect place. Vegetarian thali costed me $27 per thali. One tawa roti is $2.50 and parotta don't remember but could be around $4.50. Rating: Food: Delicious (4.5/5) Service: Excellent (5/5) Price: Little over priced for the thali (3/5) Overall: 4.2/5

Very good food. I came here with my partner and we both left very full and very happy. The atmosphere was nice, felt very open and airy and with the large plants between the tables, it was a nice intimacy blocker between tables. We got the onion fritters which were very salty so I personally wouldn't get them again but the sauce was very fresh. For my main, I got the chicken Thali platter which easily could have been a sharing portion. It was so good though. As someone who eats a lot of curry, the idea of having a bunch of different curries and daals to try was great. Each has a unique flavour profile and though I personally may have liked some more than others, that doesn't mean they weren't all great in their own way. I'll definitely be back but with friends to share the platter with because it's a lot of food for one person.

Shrimp...again, eat all together for full flavour...

Wow!! What a flavourful feast! Impressive! Place was packed when we came (and some people still line up outside). We were lucky to get a place (maybe because there are only 2 of us). Service was attentive even in the midst of busy-ness. Our server always checking up on us. Ordered appetizer: chicken sukka, crab cake, shrimp kakkan, Entrees: lobster masala and thali (traditional south indian). Appetizer is very well done. Cooked right. Flavour is perfect. Indian food is famous for its quite-strong spices (which I like). To be able to have a well-balanced of strong spices yet still having a distinct/unique flavour on each dish requires lots of creativity. I can 'taste' the well thought-out creation in it. Entrees thali cames in a tray full of individual small bowl of dishes. Every single dish has its own unique taste... 'bright' yet bit soury yogurt..strong yet mild veggie yellow curry...refreshing tomato curry...'a kick' of veal dish...'light' salad ... earthy mushroom curry...not-overly-sweet vermicelli. I try every single dish on its own or mix all up (excludig sweet vermicelli)...whichever way still resulted in a delicious dishes! Lobster masala is not quite 'there' for us. For me because the sauce taste fishy, for hubby because the lobster taste itself is 'diluted' with curry. This is just our preference, which does not reflect the quality/flavour of the dish itself. Overall very highly recommended!!

The mango lassi had a great spice profile (not just mango flavour) which added to the complexity of the drink. I've never had a salted lassi before but it was an interesting experience for me (kind of reminded me of liquified greek yogurt). It was surprisingly refreshing and would be good to have with sweet things to reset the palate. Of the sides, I liked the crab cake (ample amounts of crab w/ Kerala Spices & Chili Lime Sauce) over the crispy sago and spinach croquettes (this had this cool crispy, slightly mochi-esque texture though). As the restaurant name implies, their specialty is thali and it did not disappoint. Particularly the lamb was wonderful and filled with flavour. We ended up having every last bit of that portion. The poratha had the right balance of crisp & chewy that made it super addictive to dip into the variety of little dishes provided by the thali.

    Vegetarian & Non-Vegetarian Thali(s)! Both were amazing!

Had both Vegetarian & Non-Vegetarian Thali(s)! They were both amazing! And the restaurant along with the service was an amazing place to be at. We were so glad to have found it and been there! Must go in Ottawa!

Traditional Thali with Pepper Lamb and an assortment of vegetarian dishes. Hot chai to drink.
    Anita B.

When Coconut Lagoon's chef, Joe Thottungal, opened up Thali, it was an absolute must-try for me and it didn't disappoint. The Traditional Thali with Pepper Lamb became a quick favourite of mine with its assortment of vegetarian dishes, rice, paratha and pappadum. The thali also comes with a dessert included. For $26, this meal can easily count as two in one for its portion size, so I recommend eating less before going in order to fully enjoy your experience. Also, I usually get chai to drink to complete my meal ($3.50, not included in their thali) and theirs is quite good. Overall, all of the dishes in the thali were very flavourful and varying in taste profiles. The mushroom curry is my fav vegetarian dish out of all of them though - so creamy and addicting! This place is great for business lunches as it's right downtown, but it also makes for a fun dining experience with friends and family. I highly recommend checking this resto out if you love Indian food and are looking for an elevated meal out.

tawa roti, eggplant masala, lamb biryani
    Rohan S.

honestly really good!! the roti was flaky and chewy, maybe a bit too thin though. the eggplant masala was amazing, I really enjoyed it. the lamb biryani was also spiced well and the lamb was cooked really well. our waitress was really kind and provided great service. the ambiance and decor of the restaurant is also really nice. it's kind of like if the clean girl aesthetic was a restaurant? lots of whites and tans and greens. overally really enjoyed and didn't expect to find Indian food this good so close to parliament !

Lemme just start off by saying this: the food was good. It wasn't bad at all. I really wanted to try this place for a while and so yesterday I finally got to. We were the first guests there, so I didn't think the service would have been bad or anything, but it wasn't the best. First, they didn't offer us tap water, and straight away gave us sparkling - which we got charged $7 for. I ordered an appetizer, which they never served me, either. They also brought out the wrong order for my friend, and had to go back to fix it. Kind of a bummer. However, what I actually went to the restaurant for--the thali--was great. Loved the flavours of the lamb, and the roti was really tasty. My spice tolerance is very low so I thought everything was really spicy after a certain point, but I can appreciate the spices and flavours they incorporated. I really like how when you order a thali, you can try multiple things. The lamb was cooked perfectly and alright it might seem like a small amount of food, it's quite a bit. Neither my friend or I were able to finish. Would I go back? No. But I am grateful I got the opportunity to go and knock it off my checklist. Would I recommend? Sure. I believe that my experience should not influence your choice-- it seemed like the other tables were having a good time! 6.5/10
